In this article, we propose a new technique for constructing confidence intervals for the mean of a noisy sequence with multiple change-points. We use the weighted bootstrap to generalize the bootstrap aggregating or bagging estimator. A standard deviation formula for the bagging estimator is introduced, based on which smoothed confidence intervals are constructed. To further improve the performance of the smoothed interval for weak signals, we suggest a strategy of adaptively choosing between the percentile intervals and the smoothed intervals. A new intensity plot is proposed to visualize the pattern of the change-points. We also propose a new change-point estimator based on the intensity plot, which has superior performance in comparison with the state-of-the-art segmentation methods. The finite sample performance of the confidence intervals and the change-point estimator are evaluated through Monte Carlo studies and illustrated with a real data example.  相似文献

The Heston-STAR model is a new class of stochastic volatility models defined by generalizing the Heston model to allow the volatility of the volatility process as well as the correlation between asset log-returns and variance shocks to change across different regimes via smooth transition autoregressive (STAR) functions. The form of the STAR functions is very flexible, much more so than the functions introduced in Jones (J Econom 116:181–224, 2003), and provides the framework for a wide range of stochastic volatility models. A Bayesian inference approach using data augmentation techniques is used for the parameters of our model. We also explore goodness of fit of our Heston-STAR model. Our analysis of the S&P 500 and VIX index demonstrates that the Heston-STAR model is more capable of dealing with large market fluctuations (such as in 2008) compared to the standard Heston model.  相似文献

The graphical lasso has now become a useful tool to estimate high-dimensional Gaussian graphical models, but its practical applications suffer from the problem of choosing regularization parameters in a data-dependent way. In this article, we propose a model-averaged method for estimating sparse inverse covariance matrices for Gaussian graphical models. We consider the graphical lasso regularization path as the model space for Bayesian model averaging and use Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques for the regularization path point selection. Numerical performance of our method is investigated using both simulated and real datasets, in comparison with some state-of-art model selection procedures.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a Bayesian analysis of double seasonal autoregressive moving average models. We first consider the problem of estimating unknown lagged errors in the moving average part using non linear least squares method, and then using natural conjugate and Jeffreys’ priors we approximate the marginal posterior distributions to be multivariate t and gamma distributions for the model coefficients and precision, respectively. We evaluate the proposed Bayesian methodology using simulation study, and apply to real-world hourly electricity load data sets.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with Bayesian inference in psychometric modeling. It treats conditional likelihood functions obtained from discrete conditional probability distributions which are generalizations of the hypergeometric distribution. The influence of nuisance parameters is eliminated by conditioning on observed values of their sufficient statistics, and Bayesian considerations are only referred to parameters of interest. Since such a combination of techniques to deal with both types of parameters is less common in psychometrics, a wider scope in future research may be gained. The focus is on the evaluation of the empirical appropriateness of assumptions of the Rasch model, thereby pointing to an alternative to the frequentists’ approach which is dominating in this context. A number of examples are discussed. Some are very straightforward to apply. Others are computationally intensive and may be unpractical. The suggested procedure is illustrated using real data from a study on vocational education.  相似文献

This paper presents a method for Bayesian inference for the regression parameters in a linear model with independent and identically distributed errors that does not require the specification of a parametric family of densities for the error distribution. This method first selects a nonparametric kernel density estimate of the error distribution which is unimodal and based on the least-squares residuals. Once the error distribution is selected, the Metropolis algorithm is used to obtain the marginal posterior distribution of the regression parameters. The methodology is illustrated with data sets, and its performance relative to standard Bayesian techniques is evaluated using simulation results.  相似文献

We demonstrate how to perform direct simulation from the posterior distribution of a class of multiple changepoint models where the number of changepoints is unknown. The class of models assumes independence between the posterior distribution of the parameters associated with segments of data between successive changepoints. This approach is based on the use of recursions, and is related to work on product partition models. The computational complexity of the approach is quadratic in the number of observations, but an approximate version, which introduces negligible error, and whose computational cost is roughly linear in the number of observations, is also possible. Our approach can be useful, for example within an MCMC algorithm, even when the independence assumptions do not hold. We demonstrate our approach on coal-mining disaster data and on well-log data. Our method can cope with a range of models, and exact simulation from the posterior distribution is possible in a matter of minutes.  相似文献

COM-Poisson regression is an increasingly popular model for count data. Its main advantage is that it permits to model separately the mean and the variance of the counts, thus allowing the same covariate to affect in different ways the average level and the variability of the response variable. A key limiting factor to the use of the COM-Poisson distribution is the calculation of the normalisation constant: its accurate evaluation can be time-consuming and is not always feasible. We circumvent this problem, in the context of estimating a Bayesian COM-Poisson regression, by resorting to the exchange algorithm, an MCMC method applicable to situations where the sampling model (likelihood) can only be computed up to a normalisation constant. The algorithm requires to draw from the sampling model, which in the case of the COM-Poisson distribution can be done efficiently using rejection sampling. We illustrate the method and the benefits of using a Bayesian COM-Poisson regression model, through a simulation and two real-world data sets with different levels of dispersion.  相似文献

Inference of interaction networks represented by systems of differential equations is a challenging problem in many scientific disciplines. In the present article, we follow a semi-mechanistic modelling approach based on gradient matching. We investigate the extent to which key factors, including the kinetic model, statistical formulation and numerical methods, impact upon performance at network reconstruction. We emphasize general lessons for computational statisticians when faced with the challenge of model selection, and we assess the accuracy of various alternative paradigms, including recent widely applicable information criteria and different numerical procedures for approximating Bayes factors. We conduct the comparative evaluation with a novel inferential pipeline that systematically disambiguates confounding factors via an ANOVA scheme.  相似文献

This article reviews Bayesian inference from the perspective that the designated model is misspecified. This misspecification has implications in interpretation of objects, such as the prior distribution, which has been the cause of recent questioning of the appropriateness of Bayesian inference in this scenario. The main focus of this article is to establish the suitability of applying the Bayes update to a misspecified model, and relies on representation theorems for sequences of symmetric distributions; the identification of parameter values of interest; and the construction of sequences of distributions which act as the guesses as to where the next observation is coming from. A conclusion is that a clear identification of the fundamental starting point for the Bayesian is described.  相似文献

In segmentation problems, inference on change-point position and model selection are two difficult issues due to the discrete nature of change-points. In a Bayesian context, we derive exact, explicit and tractable formulae for the posterior distribution of variables such as the number of change-points or their positions. We also demonstrate that several classical Bayesian model selection criteria can be computed exactly. All these results are based on an efficient strategy to explore the whole segmentation space, which is very large. We illustrate our methodology on both simulated data and a comparative genomic hybridization profile.  相似文献

A Y-linked two-sex branching process with blind choice is a suitable model for analyzing the evolution of the number of carriers of two alleles of a Y-linked gene in a two-sex monogamous population where each female chooses her partner from among the male population without caring about his type (i.e., the allele he carries). This work focuses on the development of Bayesian inference for this model, considering a parametric framework with the reproduction laws belonging to the power series family of distributions. A sample is considered given by the observation of the total number of females and males (regardless of their types) up to some generation as well as the number of each type of male in the last generation. Using a simulation method based on the Gibbs sampler, we approximate the posterior distributions of the main parameters of this model. The accuracy of the procedure based on this sample is illustrated by way of a simulated example.  相似文献

Categorical data frequently arise in applications in the Social Sciences. In such applications, the class of log-linear models, based on either a Poisson or (product) multinomial response distribution, is a flexible model class for inference and prediction. In this paper we consider the Bayesian analysis of both Poisson and multinomial log-linear models. It is often convenient to model multinomial or product multinomial data as observations of independent Poisson variables. For multinomial data, Lindley (1964) [20] showed that this approach leads to valid Bayesian posterior inferences when the prior density for the Poisson cell means factorises in a particular way. We develop this result to provide a general framework for the analysis of multinomial or product multinomial data using a Poisson log-linear model. Valid finite population inferences are also available, which can be particularly important in modelling social data. We then focus particular attention on multivariate normal prior distributions for the log-linear model parameters. Here, an improper prior distribution for certain Poisson model parameters is required for valid multinomial analysis, and we derive conditions under which the resulting posterior distribution is proper. We also consider the construction of prior distributions across models, and for model parameters, when uncertainty exists about the appropriate form of the model. We present classes of Poisson and multinomial models, invariant under certain natural groups of permutations of the cells. We demonstrate that, if prior belief concerning the model parameters is also invariant, as is the case in a ‘reference’ analysis, then the choice of prior distribution is considerably restricted. The analysis of multivariate categorical data in the form of a contingency table is considered in detail. We illustrate the methods with two examples.  相似文献

We develop a hierarchical Bayesian approach for inference in random coefficient dynamic panel data models. Our approach allows for the initial values of each unit's process to be correlated with the unit-specific coefficients. We impose a stationarity assumption for each unit's process by assuming that the unit-specific autoregressive coefficient is drawn from a logitnormal distribution. Our method is shown to have favorable properties compared to the mean group estimator in a Monte Carlo study. We apply our approach to analyze energy and protein intakes among individuals from the Philippines.  相似文献

Sinh-normal/independent distributions are a class of symmetric heavy-tailed distributions that include the sinh-normal distribution as a special case, which has been used extensively in Birnbaum–Saunders regression models. Here, we explore the use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods to develop a Bayesian analysis in nonlinear regression models when Sinh-normal/independent distributions are assumed for the random errors term, and it provides a robust alternative to the sinh-normal nonlinear regression model. Bayesian mechanisms for parameter estimation, residual analysis and influence diagnostics are then developed, which extend the results of Farias and Lemonte [Bayesian inference for the Birnbaum-Saunders nonlinear regression model, Stat. Methods Appl. 20 (2011), pp. 423-438] who used the Sinh-normal/independent distributions with known scale parameter. Some special cases, based on the sinh-Student-t (sinh-St), sinh-slash (sinh-SL) and sinh-contaminated normal (sinh-CN) distributions are discussed in detail. Two real datasets are finally analyzed to illustrate the developed procedures.  相似文献

A supra-Bayesian (SB) wants to combine the information from a group of k experts to produce her distribution of a probability θ. Each expert gives his counts of what he thinks are the numbers of successes and failures in a sequence of independent trials, each with probability θ of success. These counts, used as a surrogate for each expert's own individual probability assessment (together with his associated level of confidence in his estimate), allow the SB to build various plausible conjugate models. Such models reflect her beliefs about the reliability of different experts and take account of different possible patterns of overlap of information between them. Corresponding combination rules are then obtained and compared with other more established rules and their properties examined.  相似文献

The general mixed linear model, containing both the fixed and random effects, is considered. Using gamma priors for the variance components, the conditional posterior distributions of the fixed effects and the variance components, conditional on the random effects, are obtained. Using the normal approximation for the multiple t distribution, approximations are obtained for the posterior distributions of the variance components in infinite series form. The same approximation Is used to obtain closed expressions for the moments of the variance components. An example is considered to illustrate the procedure and a numerical study examines the closeness of the approximations.  相似文献
