The case. Bad care, good care, and spiritual preservation

A cancer patient learning to walk again finds that his relationships with his two physical therapists affect his recovery. One woman gives hope as well as instruction. He advises healers to meet their patients as equals, "to take down as many barriers as they can, give away as many distancing privileges as possible."     

Behaviorally impaired children in out-of-home care.

This study was undertaken to determine the nature of the out-of-home care placement experience for 131 behaviorally impaired children entering care over the course of a year in Nebraska. Variables analyzed included behavioral impairment, age at entry, age at termination, gender, race/ethnicity, family violence, geographical area before and at termination, closeness to home of most recent placement, and length of time in care. Multiple regression analysis showed that behavioral impairment was the strongest predictor of length of time in care, accounting for 2.4% of the variability.     

Sexual misconduct by health care providers.

1. Just as in society in general, health care providers can engage in compulsive sexual behaviors that jeopardize their health, careers, and relationships, both personal and professional. 2. Sex addicts not only deny and rationalize their acts but also resist accepting any feedback about their sexually inappropriate behaviors. 3. To protect patients from sexual misconduct, health care providers who exhibit sexually inappropriate behaviors must be confronted, and consistent limits must be set, including terminating patient contact, if necessary. 4. Treatment for sexually compulsive behaviors is multifaceted, and signs that a person is cooperating with treatment are ceasing the compulsive behaviors, experiencing feelings of remorse, expressing regret, accepting personal responsibility, and abiding by guidelines for reinstatement.     

Informal care vs. formal services: changes in patterns of care over time

Longitudinal data from a representative sample of community-residing older persons were used to document changes in patterns and costs of care, both informal and formal. It was found that use of formal services was usually in conjunction with, and secondary to, informal care. Limited availability of informal care as well as increased disability raised the odds of using services. Substitution of formal services for informal care was limited and usually temporary. Total costs of community care, including living expenses, were generally less than the cost of nursing home care.     

Nursing care challenges: homosexual psychiatric patients.

1. Stereotypes of homosexual behavior may negatively affect the nursing care for homosexual patients. Nurses must closely examine their attitudes toward homosexuals. To be able to provide quality care to homosexual patients, nurses must feel comfortable and fully aware of their own attitudes toward sexuality and homosexuality. 2. Nurses stand in a unique position to foster acceptance of homosexuality by assuming the advocacy role and addressing the stereotypes regarding homosexuality for both individual clients and the community. 3. Nurses need to provide an atmosphere of acceptance for homosexual patients by creating an environment where sexuality can be discussed in nonthreatening ways.     

Health supervision of children in foster care.

The 1971--74 survey of the health needs and services provided to New York City children in foster care indicates a failure of the Medicaid program to ensure adequate routine care and treatment.
