Participation—for a change: Disabled young people lead the way

Virtually every Government programme for children and every Government Department in the UK is expected to involve children and young people in its policy development and service delivery (Children and Young People's Unit, 2001). It is the new orthodoxy. Yet, hard questions are often avoided when reciting the mantra of participation. Why bother? What has changed as a result? This paper first seeks to explore the constraints and limitations of this drive in public policy in England. Secondly, by looking at one specific example, it considers elements of practice to enable participation to be effective as a catalyst for change. Third, it proposes a framework that sets out an agenda for social inclusion that is itself influenced by children and young people and not reliant on the changing and often clashing fashions in Government.     

Supplementing English parish listings—a way forward?

Abstract This article outlines a methodology for reconstructing census-type listings of English parishes for the pre-census era. The methodology is offered as a possible way around the impasse created by the uneven and random survival of a relatively small number of contemporary listings of the period. Examples are drawn from a series of reconstructed listings for the parish of Highley in Shropshire from the seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.     

General Job Satisfaction From a Developmental Perspective: Exploring Choice—Job Matches at Two Career Stages

The authors explored predictions of general job satisfaction at early and middle adulthood and uncovered several findings about developmental processes associated with job satisfaction. Tests of life‐span career theory propositions revealed that neither choice‐job congruence nor gender added significantly to predictions of job satisfaction at 2 career stages. Earlier occupational choice and current job added to predictions of midcareer (modal age 43 years) job satisfaction, especially for men. The predictability of job satisfaction is apparently influenced by the career stage when satisfaction is appraised.

Job coaching for persons with mental disabilities

The effectiveness of job coaching for persons with mental challenges at the Yokohama City Comprehensive Care Continuum is examined through case records. The immediate intervention with the client, as well as improved working conditions through consultation with the company are recognized as crucial for the client's optimum adjustment at the work site. On the other hand, in a case where the client quit the job, we can see that the inadequacy is in the assessment of the client and of the working conditions. Improved assessments are needed. Using the principle and the strategies of supported employment developed in America, the goal of job coaching at Y.C.C.C. is to form an adequate support system for the client, both at the workplace and in other living and social situation which influence the client in the workplace.     

Criteria for placement decisions with cocaine-exposed infants.

This study explored the criteria for placement decisions concerning cocaine-exposed infants used by child protection workers in three suburban Chicago counties. Content analyses uncovered a complex decision-making process that demonstrated consistency across geographic regions. A number of primary factors influence decisions for in-home or out-of-home care for the infant, with the availability of support systems for the parents and infants a critical factor in deciding placement.
