Serial Joy and Serial Sorrow: The Experience of the Paraprofessional Serials Manager

Abstract

Paraprofessionals play a major role in the management of serials operations in libraries. Nine paraprofessional serials managers responded to an inquiry on the SERIALST online discussion list in which they shared their impressions on several issues relating to their role, status, motivation, and general perceptions about their work. For many years, there has been an ongoing debate relating to the role of paraprofessionals in libraries. Many library paraprofessionals have advanced their careers in the field of serials and have become managers of high-level operations. This Balance Point column explores the experiences of some of these paraprofessional serials managers.     

Testing for Serial Independence: Beyond the Portmanteau Approach

Portmanteau tests are typically used to test serial independence even if, by construction, they are generally powerful only in presence of pairwise dependence between lagged variables. In this article, we present a simple statistic defining a new serial independence test, which is able to detect more general forms of dependence. In particular, differently from the Portmanteau tests, the resulting test is powerful also under a dependent process characterized by pairwise independence. A diagram, based on p-values from the proposed test, is introduced to investigate serial dependence. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposal is evaluated in a simulation study and with an application on financial data. Both show that the new test, used in synergy with the existing ones, helps in the identification of the true data-generating process. Serial Publications in the Center for Research Libraries

This article has been limited to describing the Center's activities in regard to serial publications. The reader should be reminded that the materials described in this article form only a part of the Center's collection. Excluding government documents, serial publications alone account for about 600,000 of the over 3,000,000 volumes held by the Center. The Center's printed Catalogue presently consists of 12 volumes of monographic titles, but only three volumes of serial titles. In addition to this, the Center holds over 500,000 foreign doctoral dissertations, 85,000 textbooks, 45,000 children's books, 125,000 college catalogs and several smaller collections of monographic materials which are shelf cataloged and thus do not appear in the printed Catalogue. erial publications thus form only one part of the Center's total collection. That it is a significant part is indicated by the fact that the publications described in this article, current issues and backfiles of journals and newspapers, account for nearly 60% of the material borrowed from the Center.

Characteristics of Serial Title Changes and Recognition of New Serial Works: Theoretical and Practical Implications

The paper reports findings from a study to identify characteristics of serials with title changes and then make recommendations for recognizing new works for these serials. Findings show title changes occur due to underlying subject, function, corporate, geographic, frequency, or format changes, with 80.8% of the changes being subject or function changes. It is recommended that reasons for title changes be determined from clear statements in text or elsewhere, and that new works be recognized based upon the requirements of a definition of a work. With the FRBR definition, a new work would be recognized only for a significant subject or function change.

Serial correlation and distributions on the shere

Estimation and tests for serial correlation in recation and regression models with normal error have been derive from various points of view; for example: Anderson (1948), Durbi for Watson (1950, 1951, 1971), Theil (1965), Durbin (1970), Haq (1970), Kadiyala (1970), Abrahamse & Louter (1971), Levenbac (1972), Berenblut & Webb (1973), Phillips & Harvey (1974), a Sims (1975). In this paper we derive likelihood functions and most powerful tests for serial correclation in Locationa and regression models with arbitrary but specificed error; the methods extend to include the determination of the likelihood for the parameter of the error distribution.

In Section 2, we survey the modthods that have been used in deriving the various tests and estimates in the literature. In Section 2, we introduce the stataistical model that directly describes the error distribution and we obtain the likelihood function for error correlation and determine locally and specifically kost powerful tests for correlation. In Section 3 we consider the case with normal error derive a normal distribution on the sphere by radial projection. The likelihood function and test are then specialized to the case of normal error in Section 4. The computational procedures for the tests and related power functions are examined in Section 5. Power comparisons for the textile data of Theil and Nagar (1961), the consumption data of Kelin (1950), and the plums and the wheat data of Hildreth & Lu (1960) are presented in Section 6, while the likelihood functions for correlation in these data are given in Section 7.

为了研究企业中会计信息质量与现金持有价值之间的非线性关系,从融资约束的视角,对会计信息质量影响现金持有价值的机理进行了理论分析;基于A股上市公司2008—2012年的平衡面板数据,建立了以会计信息质量为门槛变量的回归模型,检验了不同区间的会计信息质量对应的现金持有价值。研究发现,当会计信息质量低于特定门槛时,融资约束出现,现金持有价值显著;反之,融资约束消失,现金持有价值不显著。     

Teaching E-journals: Building a Workshop for an Academic Health Sciences Library

Abstract

Prompted by survey results from users of the University at Buffalo Health Sciences Library, the Coordinator of Information Management Education created a workshop about electronic journals (e-journals). Common reference questions regarding accessing and using e-journals led to the development of specific course objectives. The workshop focused on the commonly held myths surrounding e-journals, and the recommended methods for accessing journals through the University at Buffalo Libraries. This article details the process of building the workshop and suggests reasons and methods for implementing similar instructional opportunities in other libraries. Serials Review 2002; 28:88–92.
