After the first large scale national sampling survey on handicapped persons in 1987, China conducted its second national sampling
survey in 2006. Using the data from these two surveys and the national life tables, we computed and compared the expected
years of life free of handicapped condition by the Sullivan method. The expected years of life lived with handicap for the
Chinese population increased from 4.87 years for males and 5.81 years for females in 1987 to 5.55 years and 6.32 years in
2006, respectively. The same trend was observed for people in working ages (15–64) and old ages (65+). However, the expected
years of life lived with handicap decreased for children (0–14). Our results also showed that the effect of skeletal handicap
increased notably for both sexes. Healthy life expectancy is an important indicator in measuring quality of life of a population.
Our study utilized this measurement to quantify one aspect of quality of life of the Chinese population. 相似文献

Family Life Quality and Emotional Quality of Life in Chinese Adolescents with and Without Economic Disadvantage 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Chinese secondary school students (N = 2758) responded to measures of perceived family life quality (parenting quality and parent–child relational quality) and
emotional quality of life (hopelessness, mastery, life satisfaction and self-esteem). Parenting quality included different
aspects of parental behavioral control (parental knowledge, expectation, monitoring, discipline and demandingness as well
as parental control defined in terms of indigenous Chinese concepts), parental psychological control, and parental responsiveness
whereas parent–child relational quality included satisfaction with parental control, child’s readiness to communicate with
the parents, parental trust of the child, and child’s trust of the parent. Results showed that parenting quality and parent–child
relational quality in poor families were generally poorer than those of non-poor families and the differences were more pronounced
in paternal parenting quality and father–child relational quality than in maternal parenting quality and mother–child relational
quality. Emotional quality of life of adolescents experiencing economic disadvantage was also found to be poorer than that
of adolescents not experiencing economic disadvantage. The present findings replicate the previous research findings in the
literature and generate a pioneering dataset based on Chinese adolescents at Secondary 2 level in Hong Kong. 相似文献

Do We Need to Weight Satisfaction Scores with Importance Ratings in Measuring Quality of Life? 总被引:1,自引:4,他引:1
Trauer and Mackinnon (2001; Quality of life research 10, pp. 579–585) recently proposed that weighting satisfaction scores
by importance ratings in measuring quality of life is undesirable and unnecessary. However, they didn’t use empirical data
to support their claim. In this study, different weighting algorithms developed by Cummins (1997; Comprehensive Quality of
Life Scale – Adult: Manual [Deakin, University Australia]), Raphael et al. (1996; Journal of Adolescent Health 19, pp. 366–375),
Ferrans and Powers (1985; Advances in Nursing Science 8, pp. 15–24) and Frisch (1992; Comprehensive Casebook of Cognitive
Therapy [Plenum Press, New York]) for measuring quality of life (QOL) were applied. Weighted scores computed from these weighting
algorithms were compared with unweighted scores in predicting a global life satisfaction measure by correlation and moderated
regression analyses. One hundred and thirty undergraduate students at National Taiwan University participated in the study
voluntarily. They completed a 15-item questionnaire on quality of campus life developed by the authors. They also completed
the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), a global life satisfaction measure developed by Diener et al. (1985; Journal of Personality
Assessment 49, pp. 71–75). The correlation results revealed that the weighted scores computed from different algorithms didn’t
have higher correlations to the SWLS than the unweighted scores. The moderated regression results also revealed that item
importance did not moderate the relationship between item satisfaction and the overall life satisfaction. All these findings
revealed that weighting satisfaction with importance is unnecessary.

We report the initial findings of an ongoing, long-term investigation into subjective quality of life in Macau, a Special
Administrative Region of China. Data were collected via quarterly public surveys (2007 to 2009; n = 8,230), as part of the Macau Quality of Life Report. The main aims of the study were to: (a) ascertain the public’s satisfaction
with life and with the regional situation in Macau; (b) confirm the utility of the International Wellbeing Index (IWI) as
a measure of subjective life quality; and (c) contribute to ongoing discussion in the literature on quality of life in China.
The data indicated moderate levels of personal (PWI = 64.4; range 63–66.7) and national (NWI = 59.7; 57.4–63.7) wellbeing
across the study period, which implies that residents in Macau are generally satisfied with life. The lowest scores were reported
in the first quarter of 2009, a period of great economic uncertainty in Macau and the world, but were positioned within the
normative range. The IWI demonstrated good psychometric performance, consistent with previous studies in China and the West,
which confirmed its utility. These findings are discussed in relation to the IWI’s theoretical underpinnings and the literature. 相似文献

The aim of the current study was to examine the role of satisfaction-with-event as a mediator in the relations between flow
and life satisfaction based on the bottom-up theory (Andrews and Withey in Social indicators of well-being: Americans’ perceptions
of life quality. Plenum, New York, 1976; Lee et al. in J Macromarketing 22(2): 158–169, 2002). Four hundred and thirty-four participants with a mean age of 35.60 (SD = 11.76) were recruited from the audience of a “Cirque
du Soleil” acrobatics show, performed in Taiwan in 2009. Participants completed the flow scale (Csikszentmihalyi in Flow:
the psychology of optimal experience. Harper & Row, New York, 1990), a satisfaction-with-event scale (Lin and Hsu in Mark Rev 3(4): 497–528, 2008), and a satisfaction-with-life scale (Diener et al. in J Pers Assess 49:71–75, 1985) immediately after viewing the show. Structural equation modeling was conducted to examine our hypothesis that satisfaction-with-event
levels would fully mediate the relationship between flow and overall life satisfaction. Results supported our prediction and
are discussed in terms of bottom-up theory. Implications of the study are also provided for the leisure managers. 相似文献

Claims about the impacts of environmental quality associated with urban renewal on the resident’s subjective quality of life
are more speculative than empirically grounded. To clarify the impacts of environmental quality under urban renewal, this
study surveyed 876 residents living in housing surrounding seven urban renewal sites in Hong Kong. It shows that environmental
quality, both perceived (retrospectively) during and expected (prospectively) after urban renewal, exhibited positive effects
on the resident’s subjective quality of life. Furthermore, it reveals that the subjective quality of life of the resident
with higher education was less responsive to environmental quality perceived during urban renewal. The findings imply that
more measures to mitigate the adverse social impact of urban renewal are preferably available to residents with less education. 相似文献

This article seeks to extend Michalos’ [Social indicators research and health-related quality of life (QoL) research. Social Indicators Research, 65, 27–72, 2004] discussion on bridging social indicators research and health-related QoL (HRQoL) research through an examination
of (1) the relative importance of satisfaction with one’s own health to another common measure of QoL—Life satisfaction, and
(2) the relative importance of health in relation to other major life domains. Using data from two surveys, this article found
that individuals may perceive health as most important in relation to other major life domains but satisfaction with one’s
own health may not necessarily be the most important determining factor (in relation to satisfaction with other major life
domains) of QoL as measured by life satisfaction. These findings support Michalos’ (Social indicators research and HRQoL research.
Social Indicators Research, 65, 27–72, 2004) call for caution regarding the interpretation of research results on HRQoL since many HRQoL measures are measures
of satisfaction with one’s own health and should not be considered as measures of QoL. 相似文献

Purpose To describe the development of a model for estimating the effects of tobacco use upon Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs)
and to estimate the impact of tobacco use on health outcomes for the United States (US) population using the model.
Method We obtained estimates of tobacco consumption from 6 years of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). In addition, NHIS
data were used to impute the Quality of Well-Being (QWB) Scale using a new methodology known as QWBX1. The QWB places health
status on a continuum ranging from death (0.0) to full functioning without symptoms (1.0). The method allows the adjustment
of life expectancy for reduced quality of life associated with health conditions. NHIS data were matched to the National Death
Index for 14,464 deaths occurring by December 31, 1997. The analysis is limited to adults between the ages of 18 and 70 years.
Results Quality of Well-Being scores were broken down by age and for six smoking categories: (1) non-smokers, (2) those who smoke
1–10 cigarettes per day, (3) 11–20 cigarettes per day, (4) 21–30 cigarettes per day, and (5) 31–40 cigarettes per day, and
(6) 40 or greater cigarettes per day. There was a systematic relationship between current tobacco use and health-related quality
of life at each point along the age spectrum and there was a clear and systematic separation of quality-adjusted life expectancy
by number of cigarettes smoked per day. Teenagers who continue to smoke loose 3.5 QALYs between ages 18 and 70 in comparison
to non-smokers. A greater portion in the loss in QALE is attributable to quality of life than to shorten life expectancy.
Conclusions The overall goal of Healthy People 2010 is to increase Years of Healthy Life (or QALE) in the United States. Each year, tobacco
use results in hundreds of thousands of quality-adjusted life years lost. Combined models of morbidity and mortality incorporating
a range of tobacco consumption levels are required to best represent the impact of tobacco use.

The availability and safety of drinking water and the environmental quality of life was investigated in five cities located
in an oil-producing area of Nigeria using questionnaire-based scales, discussion and laboratory tests. Polythene-packaged
sachet water and commercial and non-commercial private boreholes largely met the drinking water requirement of the cities.
Consumption of sachet water was high (14.0–20.0 points vs. 25.0 points) but regression analysis indicated strong negative
relationships with income group (β = −0.75, P < 0.005) and educational level (β = −0.77, P < 0.005) of respondents (658). Private borehole water was prevalent (18.7–19.9 vs. 20.0) while public water supplies were
almost non-existent (4.8–5.6 vs. 20.0) in the cities. Vulnerability to contamination in all water sources was indicated following
unacceptable counts of total and faecal coliform bacteria in 10–62.5 and 3–25% of samples, respectfully. Respondents were
not satisfied with environmental quality of life indicated by the quality of housing, school, health services, refuse disposal,
recreation, streetlight, transport and police (3.43–4.01 vs. 10). It is concluded that modernization and industrialization
due to the oil and gas industries, tended to increase individualization to the negligence of common services as evidenced
by the preponderance of private boreholes and sachet water. 相似文献

Reconsidering the Rural–Urban Continuum in Rural Health Research: A Test of Stable Relationships Using Mortality as a Health Measure 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ronald E. Cossman Jeralynn S. Cossman Arthur G. Cosby Rebel M. Reavis 《Population research and policy review》2008,27(4):459-476
Health researchers commonly use existing rural–urban continua based on population size and adjacency to metro areas to categorize
counties. When these continua are collapsed into simple rural-versus-urban aggregations, significant differences within the
categories are masked. We show that when the entire range of the 10-category Rural–Urban Continuum Codes (RUCC) is used, the
direction of the coefficients may differ and the fit of the model varies substantially across contiguous categories. However,
collapsing contiguous categories masks variations within the continuum. To the extent that health policy decisions are made
based on such aggregations, inappropriate policy choices may result (e.g., low payments to counties with relatively high needs).
Given Congressional calls to address rural health, and the new Office of Management and Budget (OMB) statistical area classification
system, debate over appropriate categorizations schemes is timely. We regress age-adjusted all-causes of death on various
socioeconomic factors to assess the appropriate use of variants of the rural–urban continuum for health research. Our findings
support two main conclusions. First, researchers collapsing urban–rural categorization schemes may be masking important categorical
differences, inadvertently influencing policymaking predicated on their work. Second, finer classification of settlements
yields uneven results. That is, coefficients shift signs across the continuum, indicating that collapsed models may be inappropriate.
Results derived using collapsed variants of the RUCC may be too unstable to use as health research and funding categorization schemes. We suggest that a health status or outcomes categorization scheme is likely to be a more appropriate
metric for rural health research.

Two different perspectives on immigration outcomes are employed and interrelated: Overall assessments of the success in immigration
and systemic quality of life assessments (using SQOL model, Shye in Soc Indic Res, 21:243–378, 1989). Data were collected
from a sample of 337 immigrants to Israel from the former USSR. Results reveal that quality of life is a good indicator of
perceived success in immigration and that, of the 16 SQOL components, the expressive and the conservative modes of the personality
and of the social subsystems are the four most important SQOL components that determine successful immigration. The findings
underscore the value of using a comprehensive theory-based conception of quality of life in immigration research. 相似文献

Importance weighting is a common idea in quality of life (QOL) measurement. Based on the common idea that important domains
should have more contributions to individuals’ QOL total score, the weighting procedure of multiplying item satisfaction by
item importance was adopted in many QOL instruments. However, in Locke’s [1969, Organizational Behavior and Human Performance
4, pp. 309–336; 1976, in: M.D. Dunnette (eds.), Handbook of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (Rand McNally, Chicago),
pp. 1297–1343] range-of-affect hypothesis, he indicated that the satisfaction evaluation of an item was determined by the
have–want discrepancy, importance and their interaction (discrepancy × importance), implying that item satisfaction has incorporated
the judgment of item importance, therefore, weighting an item satisfaction score with an item importance score is unnecessary.
The purpose of this study was to examine the range-of-affect hypothesis in the context of QOL research. Three hundred and
thirty two undergraduate students at National Taiwan University (NTU) participated in the study. Item satisfaction, importance
and perceived have–want discrepancy were measured for 12 different life-area items. Global life satisfaction was measured
as well. Regression analysis results showed that item importance and perceived have–want discrepancy have a significant interaction
effect on item satisfaction, supporting Locke’s range-of-affect hypothesis. In addition, regression analysis results also
showed that item importance and item satisfaction did not have a significant interaction effect on global satisfaction, suggesting
that weighting item satisfaction score by item importance value does not have advantages in predicting global satisfaction.
In a summary, the findings revealed that item satisfaction has incorporated the judgment of item importance, and, thus, the
procedure of importance weighting on item satisfaction is unnecessary. 相似文献

This study examined whether extremely high life satisfaction was associated with adaptive functioning or maladaptive functioning.
Six hundred ninety-eight secondary level students completed the Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale [Huebner, 1991a, School
Psychology International, 12, pp. 231–240], Youth Self-Report of the Child Behavior Checklist [Achenbach and Edelbrock, 1991,
Child Behavior Checklist and Youth Self-Report, Burlington, VT], Abbreviated Junior Eysenck Personality Questionnaire [Francis,
1996, Personality and Individual Differences, 21, pp. 835–844], Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children (Muris, 2001, Journal
of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assesment, 23(3), pp. 145–149], and the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (Malecki
and Demaray, 2002, Psychology in Schools, 39, pp. 1–18]. Three groups of students were created based on their life satisfaction
reports: very high (top 10%), average (middle 25%), and very low (lowest 10%). Compared to students with average life satisfaction,
students with very high life satisfaction had higher levels on all indicators of adaptive psychosocial functioning, except
extraversion. Moreover, students with very high satisfaction had the lowest scores on all measures of emotional and behavioral
problems. However, rates of clinical levels of behavior problems did not differ significantly between the very high and average
groups. Finally, several necessary, but not sufficient factors for very high life satisfaction were identified. Taken together,
the findings support the notion that very high life satisfaction is associated with positive psychosocial functioning. Furthermore,
adolescents’ reports of their life satisfaction revealed differences in adjustment that were not captured by measures of psychopathology. 相似文献

The Relationship between Country of Residence, Gender and the Quality of Life in Australian and Taiwanese Midlife Residents 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

A growing global aging population is presenting more opportunities for health professionals to interact with other cultures.
The specific aims of this study were to: (1) compare the quality of life of midlife men and women in Australian and Taiwan;
and (2) to explore the impact of country of residence and gender on quality of life. A cross-sectional survey was conducted
using census data and a probability proportional sampling (PPS) strategy on a general population of men and women aged 40–59 years-old
who live permanently in Taiwan and Australia. The sample consisted of 278 Australians and 398 Taiwanese men and women. Analysis
showed that country of residence does have an impact on quality of life with significant differences seen between midlife
Australian and Taiwanese men and women (F 4, 666 = 59.31, p < 0.001). The results suggest that midlife Australian men and women have a better quality of life than midlife Taiwanese
men and women. The mean score for the four domains of quality of life by gender indicated that midlife women consider that
they have a better quality of life than midlife men in both Australia and Taiwan. Midlife Australian men in this study reported
they are more dissatisfied with their sleep and rest (χ
2 = 10.57, df = 4, p = 0.03) and more dissatisfied with their sexual activities (χ
2 = 9.42, df = 4, p = 0.05) in contrast to midlife Australian women. This study has addressed and contributed to the assessment of multi-cultural
quality of life research and has important implications for both health providers and policy makers of both countries. 相似文献

As the concept of quality of life (QOL) has evolved from a theoretical concept to both a measurable construct and an action-oriented
change agent in the field of intellectual disabilities, there has emerged a corresponding need to develop, implement, and
use a systematic approach to the assessment of domain-referenced quality of life outcomes. The purpose of this article is
to suggest eight principles based on published literature and the authors’ experiences that should underlie the assessment
of QOL-related personal outcomes in the field of intellectual disabilities. Data from the development of the personal outcomes scale are used to exemplify each principle. The article’s premise is that model development and test construction should work in
tandem, and that a ‘quality of life assessment instrument’ should be based on an empirically derived QOL conceptual and measurement
framework/model. 相似文献

South Africa has a Gini co-efficient of 62, one of the world’s highest (Finmark: Project FinScope 2004 and 2005, FinMark Trust, Johannesburg). Hence, measures of wealth are ubiquitous social indicators in South Africa. However, a growing emphasis in government towards measurable service delivery targets and remedial action to redress the inequalities of our past makes the reliable measurement of people’s quality of life in greater depth in quantitative terms an imperative. We have developed a simple framework to measure people’s quality of life in key domains that extend beyond that simply of wealth, using composite indices to allow progress to be tracked and to make valid comparisons across our diverse population. Termed the Everyday Quality of Life Index (EQLi), it comprises a suite of measures encompassing socio-economic status (with special reference to poverty), urbanisation, health (nutrition, exercise and fitness), stress/pressure, quality of the environment, satisfaction of human needs, connectivity, optimism, subjective well-being (happiness, after Diener and Lucas: 2000, in M. Lewis, J.M. Haviland (eds.), Handbook of Emotions. (2nd ed) (Guilford, New York)), and the overall measure of well-being, the EQLi itself. The initial framework was developed from a structured questionnaire administered to a probability sample of 2000 South African adults in 2002. From this, a 52-item shortlist was derived to create the series of measures. This has been tested and refined in three subsequent annual studies, each of 3500 people across urban and rural South Africa. In 2004, items involving work as well as determining the balance of skills and challenges at work using the concept of “flow” (Csikszentmihalyi: 1990, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (Harper and Row, New York)) were added. This paper outlines the rationale behind the selection and development of these measures, describes the EQL of South Africans using these and other key measures and concludes with implications for policy-makers and service providers in South Africa. Some marketing implications are also given: there is a growing emphasis worldwide on corporate social investment initiatives and, particularly in South Africa, on community upliftment and development – poverty alleviation and improving the lives of the disadvantaged (“people” rather than “consumers”). Further, people’s well-being affects how they react to marketing activities. 相似文献

Subjective well-being has increasingly been used as a key indicator of quality of life in older people. Existing evidence
shows that it is likely that eastern cultures carry different life values and so the Chinese Aging Well Profile was devised
for measuring subjective well-being in Chinese adults (50+). Data was collected from 1,906 community-dwelling Chinese (50+)
in Taiwan in six sequential stages, involving qualitative interviews and psychometric testing. Seven key dimensions of subjective
well-being identified in the interviews provided an item bank for instrument construction. The 31-item Chinese Aging Well
Profile comprised seven subscales–’physical’, ‘psychological’, ‘independence’, ‘learning & growth’, ‘material’, ‘environmental’,
and ‘social’ well-being. The study indicated that elements of subjective well-being are common across western and eastern
cultures but are interpreted and weighted differently. This new instrument has demonstrated preliminary evidence for reliability
and validity and that it is suitable for use in the Chinese speaking older population. 相似文献

Studies on educational attainments have tended to focus on attainments at a specific level of education. The change in disparities
in attainment over the educational life cycle, however, has been neglected in literature—in India, for instance, the only
exceptions are Vaid (2004) and Desai and Kulkarni (2008). This paper uses unit level National Sample Survey data (2004–2005) to examine gender disparities at different educational
levels up to the high school level. Bi-variate analysis of gender disparities computed using the Sopher-Kundu index indicates
that although there are substantial gender disparities at lower levels of education, this gets reversed at higher levels in
several states. At the all-India level, too, in recent years, a reversal of disparity may be observed in urban areas. Econometric
analysis using the variable parameter variant of the generalized ordered logit model reveals that robustness of females increase
over the educational life cycle, though disparity remains, after controlling for socio-economic traits. 相似文献

Monitoring and reporting on the well-being of children has a central role to play in the development of policies to improve
children's lives. This paper uses two reports on child well-being – the State of London's Children Reports – as exemplars
to show how regular reporting on children can be linked to planning and policy-making in an urban environment. The paper describes
how the some of the themes and key findings from the State of London's Children Reports are being taken forward through policies
to improve the lives of London children. The paper also draws on the process of researching and writing the reports in a discussion
of some broader issues relating to child well-being measurement, focusing particularly on the integration of children's own
conceptions of their well-being within the processes of indicator development and reporting. The author proposes that children's
perspectives on what constitutes their well-being should be integrated alongside and together with more adult-oriented measures;
and that work to involve children in child well-being development should make a clear contribution to policies which are aimed
at improving the lives of children. 相似文献
