At Risk: The Relationship between Experiences of Child Sexual Abuse and Women's HIV Status in Papua New Guinea

Child sexual abuse in Papua New Guinea is a human rights issue as well as an indicator of HIV risk in women. This study aimed to develop knowledge about the link between violence experienced by women and their HIV status. The study used a mixed method approach to collect quantitative and qualitative data through structured interviews with a sample of 415 women across four provinces of Papua New Guinea: National Capital District, Western Highlands, Western, and Morobe. Participants were asked about violence they had experienced as children and in their adult relationships and the impact of the violence. The quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS, and qualitative data was coded using a thematic approach. Child sexual abuse was reported by 27.5% of the sample (n?=?114). Women reporting child sexual abuse were more likely to live in violent relationships, be HIV positive, and have a higher number of sexual partners.     

Women's Place:

Feminism has had an uneasy alliance with Hannah Arendt. Indeed, it is difficult to find any recent theorist whose thought has received quite the same vigorous treatment as Arendt's. Perhaps the widest fault-line in this ongoing consideration lies in the tension that exists between feminist constructs of the public and private and Arendt's own starkly unusual reconstructions. However, Arendt's commentary on the modern age, even her insisted separation of the public and private, sheds great light on the historically situated condition of sexism. Through careful reading, we can see that an Arendtian sense of place, far from relegating women to the home, may be the only hope for reviving the spaces of action for both women and men.     

Toward Women's Political Resociolization:

Using data from a small quasi-experimental panel study of participants in a public leadership education program, the impact of earlier socialization patterns on adult attitudes toward feminism, and the impact of participation in the public leadership program on change in those attitudes, is assessed. Findings from a path analysis of sociolization contexts and attitudes support a concept of resociolization wherein adult sociolization contexts can be seen as the stimuli for a significant enhancement of women's politicization.

“拼客”消费：都市上班青年消费新模式

以省钱、节约为宗旨的“拼客”消费引领了一股新的时尚潮流，这种类似于“AA制”的消费吸引了越来越多青年人的加盟，且衍生出众多“拼法”。拼车、拼房、拼吃、拼玩、拼贿等众多“拼”消费已成为都市青年人的另类时尚，“拼”的项目几乎覆盖了人们的衣、食、住、行。他们认同“花钱少，办事多”的生活方式，期待用最小的经济成本追求全方位的品位生活。随着都市“拼”客一族逐渐发展壮大．他们在创造节约消费文化的同时．也给城市公共管理提出了新的课题。本研究于2009年1月以杭州、宁波两地的上班青年为研究个案。通过对9人深度访谈和852人问卷调查，描述了上班青年拼客消费的现状。分析和解释了“拼客”消费呈上升趋势的原因和弊端。     

Women's Suffrage and Political Culture:

This article addresses a recent Swiss example of the lengthy process by which women were included in state politics. It is argued that this inclusion was delayed through a complex array of sociopolitical factors, including federal pressure and hesitation, changes in the state's demography and political culture, and an issue displacement from what should have been a case of women's rights to a threat to an old, male-dominated sovereign political institution. The case illustrates successful conservative political activism among women and, hence, challenges the assumption that change can only be accomplished through radical social transformation.
