This paper briefly reviews some of the basic assumptions which apply to adult therapeutic communities and describes some of the modifications felt to be necessary to adapt therapeutic communities to the needs of disturbed adolescents. The model of work utilized on the Young People's Unit, an Adolescent Unit near Manchester, comprising a therapeutic contract and the notion of senior and junior partners is proposed as well fitted to meet the maturational tasks of adolescents within the setting of the large group. 相似文献

The successful use of peer-led educational/growth groups in graduate education for social work is discussed. Planning and goals for the groups are described, along with the reactions of peer leaders, group participants, and faculty sponsors. Examples of specific exercises and the timing of and response to their use are detailed. The peer-led format discussed lends itself to adaptation by in-service training programs in social agencies. 相似文献

The communication of feelings in today's groups appears to have an evolurionary base. Emotions have species-survival functions. Primates have developed interpersonal and group bondedness on the basis of the honest and direct expression of feelings, and this has assured their survival for more than two million years. Earlier peoples of hunting and gathering societies established bonds in which the honest and open expression of feelings was vital to their mutual aid relationships. Later civilizations produced overcrowdedness in which symbolic language and limited emotional connections created conditions for emotionol dishonesty with self and others. Today 3 groups in social work practice seem to be reestablishing species-survival trust and bondedness through the spontaneous expression of intense feelings and their empathic experience and response by members. The increased need for this experience appears to be based in our evolutionary "blood." 相似文献

Three models of social work intervention are presented with a focus on worker-client interaction and the conceptual frame of reference for these models. The essential features and contemporary practices of each model are reviewed, as well as implications for achieving a consistent practice orientation. The reader is asked to locate his/her stance in order to work toward an internally consistent practice in working with groups. 相似文献

This paper reviews the treatment of conflict in the social work practice with groups literature, examines small group research that has focused on conflict, and identifies five practice principles for conflict management. Conflict in small groups is understood as normal and to be expected. However, unattended it may be extremely dysfunctional to individuals in the group and to group process and progress. The principles of conflict management are proposed as a means of maximizing the functional potential of conflict in the group. 相似文献

Consciousness-raising groups have potential to help their members realize both personal and social change. This article describes women's consciousness-raising groups, presents findings of a research study of these groups, and develops a model of the change process in these groups on the basis of those findings. The author concludes that change in consciousness-raising groups is a complex process, involving interaction between the group experience and factors outside the group. This suggests that group workers should pay more attention to the role of certain factors inside and outside the group in order to achieve a better fit between group conditions and group goals. 相似文献

This paper compares traditional explanations given for women's under-representation in union affairs with those given by a group of NESB and Australian-born female members of a large New South Wales union. The women's explanations emerge in sharp contrast to traditionally-held wisdom about women's union participation. 相似文献

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a small-group training program aimed at teaching social workers those interpersonal skills necessary for effective practice. Participants were taught to deal with critical situations commonly encountered by professional social workers in their clinical practice. Modeling, overt and covert rehearsal, videotaped and verbal feedback, coaching, behavioral assignments, delegation of group leadership, and other small group procedures were utilized in the training program. Participants met in small groups offour to six members for 2-hour sessions each week over a period of 6 weeks. The results of the study indicated that, following training, the participants were significantly (p≤ .o1) more effective than the controls in dealing with both trained and untrained items on a behavior role-play test. Methodological limitations, implications for future research on small-group training of social workers, and training of group leaders are discussed. 相似文献

This article describes the experience of Selfhelp Community Services in establishing a day center for the physically frail handicapped aged. Through the use of groups and other support services, a program for the isolated homebound is developed and maintained. Goals of the program include prevention of premature institutionalization, restoration of socialization skills, enhancement of individual self esteem, and respite for families. The evolution of the program from its beginning as a self standing center to its present suucture as an integrated service in a multipurpose senior center is described. 相似文献

The paper describes groups currently used as the treatment of choice in a day center for older adults. It utilizes a framework of four group categories that have been developed and adapted to serve the needs of the impaired elderly population in a rehabilitalion orientated day center. The author supports the use of groups as "social treatment" and supplies examples of a number of group interactions as evidence of the effectiveness of group treatment for older isolated people. 相似文献

This paper argues that group processes produce stress and therefore can be used for learning better coping skills. First, it looks at how stress surfaces in groups, and at some af the variables that will influence how the members can learn from it. Then it examines the various steps involved in a strategy of capitalizing on the existence of stressful situations, and proposes the role of animator as one which can direct workers in carrying out this strategy. The value orientation underlying the role of animator in social work groups is identified and discussed. 相似文献

Social work with groups in generic practice requires more integration of group process theory and group work methodology in relation to two questions: What is important for all social workers to know about groups and group work and when is the group the most appropriate method-of-choice in generic practice? Important premises and knowledge for this practice are the relationship of the individual to the group; the small group as a microcostic social system; and especially, the stages of group development. This knowledge base and the understanding of the "curative factors" or "change mechanisms" in groups is suggestive of the selective use of groups for providing services in generic social work practice. 相似文献

This paper explores the relationship between culturally mediated narratives of fairness, conceptions of the state, group and individual identities, citizenship and debates about globalisation in Australian perspectives on tax administration. It is based on a qualitative analysis of 2374 responses to a survey of attitudes to the Australian tax system. This paper emphasises that taxpayer's statements can be read as cultural acts that enrich our understanding of how people give meaning and significance to their lives. The majority of respondents reported that taxation should be levied fairly across social groups. However, this sense of fairness is being eroded by the widespread perception that the wealthy are avoiding their “fair share” of taxes. However, although citizens view tax administration as increasingly unfair, there is no evidence of wholesale disengagement from the system. The majority of people believe that the tax system has legitimacy and that it can be reformed. There is still scope for policy innovation that reinstates a sense of fairness, equity and balance to the tax system. 相似文献

In 1976, Children's Center, like many public mental health centers, had long waiting lists for service. In response to this need, a group intake and orientation program was developed. After screening, clients with mild to moderate problems were assigned to "Group Intake," where a general orientation is presented and simple screening tests are administered, followed by a diagnostic conference. The majority of clients then proceed to the "GO Group, " a structured group designed to deliver immediate problem-solving assistance. The impact of these group therapy projects on clients, staff, and overall outpatient programming has been dramatic: waiting lists were almost immediately eliminated, clients expressed positive responses about the program, staff experienced increased group practice, and graduate students benefited from the training. Specific procedures used and experiences of the staff are presented as well as a review of of the history of other agencies establishing the program. 相似文献

Group work with work groups was an important part of social group work. Work in and with these groups has fallen into neglect. Several reasons for this neglect may be found in conceptual definitions which have been part of group work. Yet perspectives which derive from work with work groups are essential. What has happened is that these perspectives have been rediscovered by others as they have been abandoned by social work. Often new terms are employed for old concepts. Reclaiming group work with work groups requires attention from the points of view of practice, education, and research. 相似文献
