GDP RIP (1933–2010)

When a nation's Gross Domestic Product goes up, politicians glow with pride. When it goes down, headlines shout doom. Yet GDP says nothing about the real health of a nation. It measures nobody's happiness; it tells no one how much we are destroying our environment or our children's future. It ignores all the important measures of human life. Nic Marks says it is time we replaced this outmoded measurement with something more useful.     

Working time in Great Britain, 1975–1994: evidence from the New Earnings Survey panel data

Using individual-based panel data from the New Earnings Survey, this paper provides a detailed analysis of the working time behaviour of British full-time male and female workers as well as part-time female workers. We investigate the following: male–female differences in basic and overtime working patterns; extensive overtime working; age-related patterns of weekly basic and overtime hours; the effects of collective bargaining on hours of work; industrial, public–private sector and occupational breakdowns of basic and total hours. The results for the last three topics are based on estimates from fixed effect regressions with time-varying parameters.     

CHARLES HENRY WICKENS: 1872–1939

An account of the life of the second Commonwealth Statistician, Charles Henry Wickens (1872–1939), has been given. After a primary school education in a Victorian country centre, Wickens became Associate of the Institute of Actuaries. Having joined the public service of Western Australia in 1897, he was appointed Compiler in the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics in 1906; he served as Commonwealth Statistician and Actuary, 1922 to 1932, giving outstanding service as government adviser and head of an important government department. He was a leader among theoretical and practical economists. His contributions to the study of Australian demography, especially life tables and vital statistics, were of the highest quality and permanent value. He made also scholarly contributions to actuarial theory and to the popularization of the work of the Bureau.
