An Analysis of Bumble's Language in Oliver Twist from the perspective of Semantic Deviation

In stylistic analysis, it is linguistic deviation that we are most interested in. Concerning the unique writing styles presented in Dickens' realistic novels, the author of this paper attempts to apply semantic deviation into stylistic study of realistic texts, focusing on Bumble's language in Oliver Twist as object of study. This study can help readers have a better comprehension of the character Bumble and the theme of this novel on the one hand and learn from Dickens' talented writing style and technique on the other hand.     

An Effigy for the Enslaved: Jonkonnu in Jamaica and Belisario's Sketches of Character

In 1838, less than one year before the enslaved of Jamaica were fully emancipated, Isaac Mendes Belisario completed his Sketches of Character, a set of lithographs that today constitutes one of the first visual representations of the Jamaican Jonkonnu performance from the pre-emancipation period. This essay considers the links between Jonkonnu and similar performances from the African continent, asking what Jonkonnu meant to the largest group of African-born slaves at the time Belisario finished his Sketches of Character. Ultimately, Jonkonnu is best understood as a mortuary ritual that both mourns the moment of enslavement and provides for the possibility of social resurrection within a new social order.

青年作为一个社会概念,是处在特定的历史、社会和文化背景中的人们对处于青年期这一阶段的社会族类的一种特定的认识,是一个被特定时代赋予一定期待的群体。社会学把“青年”看作是社会化的一定阶段,认为“青年是从依赖成人的童年到能进行独立的、负责的成人活动的过渡”。社会发展和青年成长具有密切联系,本文通过对新中国成立以来三个典型时期青年群体与主流社会意识相背离所产生的“偏离”现象的对比分析,揭示新中国成立以来我国青年群体的发展状况、规律以及存在的问题,并针对当前青年群体的“偏离”现象提出建设性意见。     

Religious Rhetoric and the Comic Frame in The Simpsons

Considered by many secular and religious critics alike to be the most "religious television show" currently being aired, The Simpsons reflects a commitment to satirizing the pietistic and hypocritical elements of American religious expression, but it does not attack the bases of American religious faiths. Utilizing the Burkean rhetorical concepts of comic frames consisting of an overlapping continuum of comedy, satire, and burlesque, individual characters on the show are evaluated for their rhetorical capacities to make us laugh as well as to make us aware of the impact of religion on our society.     

Wal-Mart: An Analysis of the Glocalization of the Cathedral of Consumption in China

This paper examines the methods adopted by Wal-Mart to cater to local cultures in China. This analysis draws on glocalization, a concept that refers to the interaction of the global and the local, or the incorporation of local elements into global products and/or services. This paper is important for two reasons. First, glocalization, in and of itself, has the capacity to enhance scholarly understanding of globalization with reference to global agency and cultural differentiation. Second, not only is China a nation where Wal-Mart had to glocalize the most; China is also the fastest growing market in the world. So, this analysis can bring fresh insights into today's reality of globalization processes. One of the consequences of Wal-Mart's strategy of glocalization is that it contributes to its status of ‘cathedral of consumption’ even more. A cathedral of consumption refers to an incomparable magnitude of global success (achieved by a major corporation) that gives birth to a consumer religion and a display of abundance and excess.

Este artículo examina los métodos adoptados por Wal-Mart para satisfacer a las culturas locales en China. Este análisis se basa en la glocalización, un concepto que se refiere a la interacción entre lo global y lo local, o a la incorporación de elementos locales dentro de los productos o servicios globales. Este artículo es importante por dos razones. Primero, la glocalización en sí, tiene la capacidad de mejorar la noción académica de la globalización, con referencia a la agencia global y a la diferenciación cultural. Segundo, China no sólo es una nación donde Wal-Mart tuvo que glocalizarse en mayor grado; sino que además es el mercado de mayor crecimiento en el mundo. Así, este análisis puede traer un conocimiento fresco a la realidad actual de los procesos de globalización. Una de las consecuencias de la estrategia de glocalización de Wal-Mart es que contribuye más aún a su estado de “catedral de consumo”. Una catedral de consumo se refiere a una magnitud incomparable de éxito global (lograda por una corporación mayor) que da vida a una religión de consumidor y a un despliegue de abundancia y exceso.

     

An Analysis of the Peer Effects in Charitable Giving: The Case of Taiwan

The purpose of this study was to utilize the data from the Survey on Family Income and Expenditure in Taiwan to investigate the influence of peer effects on the behavior of charitable giving. Based on the definitions of the reference group in this study, the estimation results suggested that peer effects on households' decisions on both whether to make charitable giving and how much to contribute were quite modest. The study also found that the price elasticity and the income elasticity of charitable giving in Taiwan were larger than those in the U.S., which may partially explain the low ratio of charitable giving to GDP in Taiwan. The earthquake in 1999 substantially increased the amount of charitable giving though its effect diminished after sometime.

民国时期是否建立了社会保险制度,是社会保障学界存在重大分歧的重要问题。本文在提出判断社会保险制度确立与否的标准的基础上,根据民国时期社会保险在立法、行政与实施方面的实践考辨,得出民国时期没有成功建立社会保险制度的结论,进而从宏观环境结构、中观制度复合体和微观行动者等3个层面,对民国时期影响社会保险制度产生的机制进行探究。     

Culture and Stigma: Popular Culture and the Case of Comic Books

This paper argues that a better articulated conception of stigma can enhance the analysis of popular culture. Beginning with the work on stigma by Erving Goffman and other scholars, the article contends that the stigma sometimes attached to the production and consumption of popular culture is distinct from the low status associated with certain forms of popular culture. Unlike low status, stigma discredits cultural forms and practitioners often rendering them problematic. This reassessment of stigma is applied and developed further through a study of comic books, showing the various ways stigma can operate in popular culture. The analysis suggests that stigma significantly impeded the evolution of the comic book as an art form, illustrating the potential negative effects of stigma in popular culture.

新兴信息技术背景下我国智慧城市信息安全风险和保障研究

智慧城市为我们描绘了一个具备开放性、集中化、协同化、移动化和智能化等特点的新型现代化城市。信息安全是智慧城市正常运行的前提,具有至关重要的地位,必须作为我国智慧城市建设中的一个核心内容加以保证。本文对我国智慧城市建设和运行过程中所面临的信息安全风险进行识别分析,指出我国智慧城市必须要与信息安全保障同规划、同设计、同建设,要构建包括新技术研发应用与产业发展、政策法规、组织管理体系、制度建设、人才培养等多个方面在内的联动协同的信息安全保障体系。     

Celebrity Philanthropy in China: An Analysis of Social Network Effect on Philanthropic Engagement

Celebrity philanthropy is a recent but widespread phenomenon in China. Using social network analysis, this paper seeks to answer the following questions: Is a celebrity’s position within a social network related to that celebrity’s philanthropic engagement, and how? Does a celebrity’s network position interact with normative influence to affect philanthropic engagement? What implications the study has for the development of modern philanthropy in China? Hypotheses regarding the associations between philanthropic engagement and a celebrity’s social network were tested using a sample from the “Celebrity Relationship Database.” Findings suggest that philanthropic engagement was more common in the center of the social network; under normative influence, a celebrity was more likely to engage in philanthropic activities if other members within the social network were active in philanthropic engagement; and, the effect of normative influence was stronger for celebrities who were positioned at the center of a social network than those who were positioned at the periphery. Implications for the development of modern philanthropy in China are also discussed.

     

Crossing the Divide:An American Woman's in China

WHEN one of my former colleagues at Women of China magazine phoned recently to ask me to write an article about my experiences over the past five years living and working in Beijing, I readily agreed. The magazine's mission is to help readers overseas understand life in the Middle Kingdom, particularly the challenges faced by women during the last 20 years of economic reform.     

Let the Sunshine in: An Analysis of the Placement and Pay of University Presidents and the Effects of Open Records Statutes

This paper examines how personal, institutional, and legal factors affect where college presidents are placed and how much they earn given their placements. We find that controlling for selection into institutional type is important, suggesting that presidents nonrandomly sort into institutions based on unobserved characteristics that also relate to wages. We also find evidence that state “sunshine” laws governing whether applicants’ names must be disclosed in searches are related to placements and wages. Presidents hired in states that exempt the names of all but finalists from disclosure are more likely to be placed in public research universities and less likely to be placed in private institutions. There is also evidence that presidents hired in open records states earn compensating differentials, but we are ultimately unable to distinguish this from a state-specific effect. We also find wage discounts for presidents hired at times with larger numbers of states with open records and with exemptions to disclosure for non-finalists. Thus, presidents and institutions appear to respond to market-wide incentives created by sunshine laws.     

Child maltreatment in China: An ecological review of the literature

This article presents findings of a systematic review of empirical studies on child maltreatment in China that were published in either English or Chinese. The review uses Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory as a lens to examine risk and protective factors of child maltreatment within micro-, meso-, exo-, macro-, and chrono- system levels. A search of 5 electronic bibliographic databases and websites identified 24 outcome studies on child maltreatment in China, which included studies that examined physical/emotional/sexual abuse, and neglect. The most direct influences of child maltreatment in the micro-level system include the parent-child relationship and intergenerational transmission of abuse. At the macro-system level, maltreatment is explained by cultural values such as filial piety and familism. In essence, different factors are found within the various system levels that indicate the complexities of the factors that influence child maltreatment. Throughout the article, we highlight the need to understand the cultural dynamics, values, and mores of Chinese families. The discussion includes practical suggestions and implications for intervention with children, parents, and grandparents that school teachers, social workers, policy makers, and researchers can utilize.     

The Effects of Technology Readiness on Customer Perceived Value: An Empirical Analysis

Technology infusion into service procedures has enhanced the rise of self-service technology. Technology-based services help businesses provide more flexibility, efficiency, and variety to customers. Therefore, it increases the customer??s perceived value from the business??s viewpoint. However, technology-based services are usually novel to most customers. As a result, customers who lack sufficient experience with using technology-based services may feel extreme frustration. The purpose of this study was to empirically examine how technology readiness (TR) affects customer perceived value (CPV). Data were collected from consumers who took the high speed rail in Taiwan in June 2009. As expected, optimism and innovativeness had positive impacts on CPV while discomfort and insecurity had negative impacts on CPV. The four TR dimensions all had significant, but not equal, impacts on CPV. Optimism had the highest impact on CPV. TR had no significant impact on emotional value. Social value and security value were significantly and positively affected by TR.

An Updated Examination of the Effects of Illegal Drug Use in the Workplace

Illegal drug use in the workplace is a pervasive and serious problem that affects the corporate world, particularly with respect to the impairment of employee communication in their occupational settings. Because of the diversity of illegal drugs that are available (e.g., stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens) to general employees in the workforce, various effects can occur on the users that can affect their communication styles and patterns. The purpose of this article is to compile, examine, and display the most recent literature and statistical data on illegal drug use in the workplace and its effects on human communication and the behavioral effects of illegal drug use on employees. This issue has received substantial attention over the past generations. More specifically, this area of inquiry has been a hot, scholarly topic in business and communication studies for the past few decades.     

An update on China in the political economy of information and communications

In prior research I have attempted to bring out the salience of two converging political‐economic trends. One originates in the communications and information sector, which throughout prior decades has evolved into the lead zone of business investment and profit‐making. The second stems from China, whose reinsertion into global capitalism has generated a powerful economic surge: in 2007, International Monetary Fund projects, for the first time, China will contribute more to global economic growth than any other nation. How, I asked, are these two vectors of change related? What connections exist between capitalism's most dynamic industry and its most expansionary growth zone? The present article constitutes a progress report on these issues, which continue to be fundamental.     

汽油价格变化与城市蔓延:基于中国四大直辖市的实证分析

国外研究表明,汽油价格变化是影响城市蔓延的重要因素之一。本文以我国的北京、上海、天津和重庆等四个直辖市为例,实证检验了在直辖市层面上的汽油价格变化对城市蔓延的具体影响。研究结果表明:(1)汽油价格上升对城市蔓延具有显著的抑制作用;(2)与汽油价格密切相关的柴油价格变化对城市蔓延的影响并不显著;(3)除了汽油价格之外,公共交通、房地产投资和工业发展对城市蔓延也具有明显的影响。在此基础上,得出了一些相应的政策启示。
