Pitfalls in multi-national long-range planning

The authors of this article argue that too many companies are not getting the benefits which should be produced by their long-range planning systems. Of the many possible explanations for this, the authors concentrate on the major pitfalls which should be avoided in order to ensure good results. The article is based upon the results of a survey of planning pitfalls among corporations in six industrialized countries.     

Severity-of-illness systems. An overview for medical directors--Part two

In Part One of this article in the March-April 1990 issue of Physician Executive, the authors explored severity-of-illness systems that relied on administrative data for their formulation. In the second part of the article, the authors deal with systems that use clinical and/or physiologic data as their basis.     

The future prospects in commodity markets

The importance of the commodity markets on world economics was shown clearly during 1974. In this article the authors examine commodities as potential direct investments against a backcloth of forecasted world-wide recession. The final section in this article, from an October 1974 base, puts forward a view on commodity price estimates through to 1976.

Myers An Expression of Concern is hereby issued in relation to the above article, published online on 8 April 2012 in Wiley Online Library ( wileyonlinelibrary.com ), and in Volume 43, pp. 273–302, by agreement between the authors, the journal Editor in Chief, Cheri Speier‐Pero, the Decision Sciences Institute and Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The substance of the concern is that the fit statistics reported in the article may contain many errors. The journal has investigated the matter with the help of a committee of methodology experts in statistical technique. The committee has come to the conclusion that there may indeed be something wrong with the statistics provided in the article. However, it is difficult to ascertain the implications of these errors unless the raw data is made available. Unfortunately, the authors were not able to provide the raw data despite repeated requests. We feel it is important for our readership to be aware of potential issues with the results reported in this article. We would like to reiterate that authors should be able to provide raw data when requested by journals and editors. Providing access to data when requested is good scientific practice, and is encouraged by this journal.     

Planning for better channel management

Manufacturers must modify with their channels of distribution to keep their products available in broadening and maturing markets. The authors of this article provide four broad guidelines to develop more effective relationships with channel partners.

Urban planning in India— A case study

The problems of Urban planning in a developing country are outlined in this article with particular reference to India. The authors, taking the position that urbanization cannot be stopped, examine ways in which the problems of urbanization can be tackled.     

Strategic positioning. Part 2: Positioning challenges in an evolving health care marketplace

Why is strategic positioning so important to health care organizations struggling in a managed care environment and what are the sources of value? In Part 1 of this article, entitled "The Sources of Value under Managed Care," the authors presented four sources of value relative to the evolution of the market from fee-for-service to managed care. These value sources are: (1) assets, (2) price/performance, (3) distribution, and, ultimately, (4) capabilities and brand equity. In this article, the authors further elaborate on the sources of value as the market moves beyond the historical fee-for-service position to a managed care marketplace. Part 2 presents the marketing and financial challenges to organizational positioning and performance across the four stages of managed care.     

Organizational Improvisation: What, When, How and Why

In this article, the authors review the growing body of literature on organizational improvisation in order to present an encompassing and systematic perspective on this concept. An integrative definition of its construct is presented together with a new way of measuring this phenomenon in organizational settings. The article further explores this construct by presenting its triggers, necessary conditions, influencing factors and major outcomes. The issues of improvisation's growing legitimization in the organizational arena for practitioners and researchers alike are addressed in order to argue for the need for and interest in a fuller development research on this concept.     

Leisure 1980 and beyond

In this article, the authors examine the characteristics of leisure that are of relevance in planning and look at some of the key leisure issues for the 1980s. The most fundamental question is how people will choose between extra income and more free time? This influences the rate of economic growth as well as the pattern of leisure activities. The authors see leisure as representing a cost, as well as an opportunity, for the U.K. in the 1980s.¹     

Scenarios in Europe—Who uses them and why?

The authors of this article describe a study of European companies the aim of which was to review the extent of multiple scenario analysis in company planning. They describe the differences in planning between users and non-users of the system, and analyse the benefits and drawbacks of using the system.

本文利用2004年的上市公司资料和国际通用的超额价值分析方法,不仅验证了我国上市多元化公司存在折价现象,平均折价程度达到4.8%,而且,从控股股东超额控制和董事会构成两个方面考察了控股股东攫取行为对公司多元化折价的影响.我们发现,公司多元化程度与控股股东的超额控制程度、来自控股股东的董监事比例、集团所属和两职合一呈显著正相关关系.     

Developing an energy conservation program at united technologies corporation

In this article, the authors explain United Technologies Corporation (UTC) efforts to develop and design a natural resource conservation program; establish a worldwide baseline inventory of energy consumption; develop corporation-wide conservation goals; and develop and implement systems and procedures to collect and analyze relevant data and measure performance.Since there are no federal regulatory programs requiring energy conservation or greenhouse gas emissions reporting, UTC has the flexibility and the time to develop a model program appropriate to its own organizational needs. The authors present this model as an example of a successful pragmatic program to measure and report energy consumption at the corporate level.     

Designing information systems for strategic decisions

In this article the authors argue that recent events have given rise to a need for a new class of information related to strategic decision-making. They describe some of the characteristics of “ideal” systems to meet this need and suggest a program of less sophisticated systems which will develop towards that ideal.     

Corporate planning in local government—a case study

The authors set out their view of the peculiar problems facing corporate planners in local government as compared with the private sector and their view of the nature of corporate planning in this special environment. By way of illustration as to how one local authority has attempted to introduce corporate planning, the article includes a case study of the City of Bradford Metropolitan Council.     

'90s may be decade for physician payment reform

The '80s in health care were characterized by reform of Medicare payment for hospital services. The '90s are likely to be characterized by reforms in the manner in which physicians are paid for services to Medicare beneficiaries. In this article, the authors examine the steps that are already under way or proposed for reforms in the payment for physician services under Medicare.     

Part 2, Conflict management. Managing low-to-mid intensity conflict in the health care setting

Physician executives face low to mid-level intensity conflicts, day-to-day issues and problems associated with pressures and changes in the health care environment. Such conflicts can be sorted on the basis of relationship, duration, and intensity. The authors apply the five major modes of conflict management--competition, avoidance, compromise, accommodation, and collaboration--to specific scenarios taken from their work in health care and suggest guidelines for managing conflicts with peers, supervisees, and authority figures. Thorough preparation and a portfolio of skills build flexibility through the conflict management process. In part 1 of this article series, the authors presented the conflict management checklist, a diagnostic tool for assessing conflict in organizations.
