In this paper we study the distribution of the number of customers served in a busy period in the framework of modified power series distribution introduced by Gupta (197U) and obtain the moments and probability generating function of this distribution. We also study the maximum likelihood estimation of the parameter θand the variance and the asymptotic bias of the MLE are also obtained. The minimum variance unbiased estimate of θris investigated and an estimate of the probabilities is given.  相似文献

Moments and central moments of a random variable X   are expressed as integrals of functions of lower-order conditional moments and the cumulative distribution of XX. In particular, sample central moments of order 2k2k are expressed as the sum of between groups variations, providing an analogue to the analysis of variance. Similar expressions are obtained for the expectations of real-valued and measurable functions of XX.  相似文献

Three estimators of the proportion in a tail of the normal distribution are compared using the criteria of mean squared error and mean absolute error. The estimators that we compare are the maximum likelihood estimator, the minimum variance unbiased estimator, and an intuitive estimator that is frequently used in practice. The intuitive estimator is similar to the MLE but uses the usual unbiased estimator of σ2 rather than the MLE of σ2. We show that the intuitive estimator has low efficiency, and for this reason it is not recommended. For very smallp and for largep the MVUE has the highest efficiency. The MLE is best for moderate values ofp.  相似文献

A multivariate “errors in variables” regression model is proposed which generalizes a model previously considered by Gleser and Watson (1973). Maximum likelihood estimators [MLE's] for the parameters of this model are obtained, and the consistency properties of these estimators are investigated. Distribution of the MLE of the “error” variance is obtained in a simple case while the mean and the variance of the estimator are obtained in this case without appealing to the exact distribution.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to study the estimation of the reliability R=P(Y<X) when X and Y are independent random variables that follow Kumaraswamy's distribution with different parameters. If we assume that the first shape parameter is common and known, the maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE), the exact confidence interval and the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator of R are obtained. Moreover, when the first parameter is common but unknown, MLEs, Bayes estimators, asymptotic distributions and confidence intervals for R are derived. Furthermore, Bayes and empirical Bayes estimators for R are obtained when the first parameter is common and known. Finally, when all four parameters are different and unknown, the MLE of R is obtained. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to compare the different proposed methods and conclusions on the findings are given.  相似文献

We propose a nonparametric method, called rank-based empirical likelihood (REL), for making inferences on medians and cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of k populations. The standard distribution-free approach to testing the equality of k medians requires that the k population distributions have the same shape. Our REL-ratio (RELR) test for this problem requires fewer assumptions and can effectively use the symmetry information when the distributions are symmetric. Furthermore, our RELR statistic does not require estimation of variance, and achieves asymptotic pivotalness implicitly. When the k populations have equal medians we show that the REL method produces valid inferences for the common median and CDFs of k populations. Simulation results show that the REL approach works remarkably well in finite samples. A real data example is used to illustrate the proposed REL method.  相似文献

Hartley's test for homogeneity of k normal‐distribution variances is based on the ratio between the maximum sample variance and the minimum sample variance. In this paper, the author uses the same statistic to test for equivalence of k variances. Equivalence is defined in terms of the ratio between the maximum and minimum population variances, and one concludes equivalence when Hartley's ratio is small. Exact critical values for this test are obtained by using an integral expression for the power function and some theoretical results about the power function. These exact critical values are available both when sample sizes are equal and when sample sizes are unequal. One related result in the paper is that Hartley's test for homogeneity of variances is no longer unbiased when the sample sizes are unequal. The class of Modified Power Series distributions (MPSD) containing Lagrangian Poisson (LPD) (Consul and Jain, 1973) and Lagrangian binomial distributions (LBD) (Jain and Consul, 1971) was studied by Gupta (1974). We investigate the problem of finding the negative momentsE[X-r ], of displaced and decapitated Modified Power Series Distributions. We derive the relationship between rand (r-1) negative moments. The negative moments of the decapitated and displaced LPD are obtained. These results are, then, used to find the exact amount of bias in the ML estimators of the parameters in the LPD and the LBD. We have also given the variances of the ML estimator and the minimum variance unbiased estimator of the parameter in the LPD.  相似文献

This paper deals with the estimation of R=P[X<Y] when X and Y come from two independent generalized logistic distributions with different parameters. The maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE) and its asymptotic distribution are proposed. The asymptotic distribution is used to construct an asymptotic confidence interval of R. Assuming that the common scale parameter is known, the MLE, uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator, Bayes estimation and confidence interval of R are obtained. The MLE of R, asymptotic distribution of R in the general case, is also discussed. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to compare the different proposed methods. Analysis of a real data set has also been presented for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

In this paper, inference for the scale parameter of lifetime distribution of a k-unit parallel system is provided. Lifetime distribution of each unit of the system is assumed to be a member of a scale family of distributions. Maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and confidence intervals for the scale parameter based on progressively Type-II censored sample are obtained. A β-expectation tolerance interval for the lifetime of the system is obtained. As a member of the scale family, half-logistic distribution is considered and the performance of the MLE, confidence intervals and tolerance intervals are studied using simulation.  相似文献

Let π01,…,πk be k+1 independent populations. For i=0,1,…,ki has the densit f(xi), where the (unknown) parameter θi belongs to an interval of the real line. Our goal is to select from π1,… πk (experimental treatments) those populations, if any, that are better (suitably defined) than π0 which is the control population. A locally optimal rule is derived in the class of rules for which Pr(πi is selected)γi, i=1,…,k, when θ01=?=θk. The criterion used for local optimality amounts to maximizing the efficiency in a certain sense of the rule in picking out the superior populations for specific configurations of θ=(θ0,…,θk) in a neighborhood of an equiparameter configuration. The general result is then applied to the following special cases: (a) normal means comparison — common known variance, (b) normal means comparison — common unknown variance, (c) gamma scale parameters comparison — known (unequal) shape parameters, and (d) comparison of regression slopes. In all these cases, the rule is obtained based on samples of unequal sizes.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the Inverse Gaussian distribution whose variance is proportional to the mean. Assuming that the data are available from IGD(,μ,c,μ 2), and also from its length biased version, simulation studies are presented to compare the MVUE and MLE in terms of their variances and mean square errors from both kinds of data. Some tables and graphs are provided to analyze the comparisons. Finally, some recommendations and conclusions are given when one or both kinds of data are available.  相似文献

In this article, several independent populations following exponential distribution with common location parameter and unknown and unequal scale parameters are considered. From these populations, several independent samples of generalized order statistics (gos) are drawn. Under the setup of gos, the problem of estimation of common location parameter is discussed and various estimators of common location parameter are derived. The authors obtained maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), modified MLE and uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator of common location parameter. Furthermore, under scaled-squared error loss function, a general inadmissibility result of invariant estimator is proposed. The derived results are further reduced for upper record values which is a special case of gos. Finally, simulation study and real life example are reported to show the performances of various competing estimators in terms of percentage risk improvement.  相似文献

The recurrence relations between the incomplete moments and the factorial incomplete moments of the modified power series distributions (MPSD) are derived. These relations are employed to obtain the experessions for the incomplete moments and the incomplete factorial moments of some particular members of the MPSD class such as the generalized negative binomial, the generalized Poisson, the generalized logrithmic series, the lost game distribution and the distribution of the number of customers served in a busy period. An application of the incomplete moments of the generalized Poisson distribution is provided in the economic selection of a manufactured product. A numerical example is provided using the Poisson distribution and the Generalized Poisson distribution. The example illustrates the difference in results using the two models  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article, we introduce the Gompertz power series (GPS) class of distributions which is obtained by compounding Gompertz and power series distributions. This distribution contains several lifetime models such as Gompertz-geometric (GG), Gompertz-Poisson (GP), Gompertz-binomial (GB), and Gompertz-logarithmic (GL) distributions as special cases. Sub-models of the GPS distribution are studied in details. The hazard rate function of the GPS distribution can be increasing, decreasing, and bathtub-shaped. We obtain several properties of the GPS distribution such as its probability density function, and failure rate function, Shannon entropy, mean residual life function, quantiles, and moments. The maximum likelihood estimation procedure via a EM-algorithm is presented, and simulation studies are performed for evaluation of this estimation for complete data, and the MLE of parameters for censored data. At the end, a real example is given.  相似文献

The basic assumption underlying the concept of ranked set sampling is that actual measurement of units is expensive, whereas ranking is cheap. This may not be true in reality in certain cases where ranking may be moderately expensive. In such situations, based on total cost considerations, k-tuple ranked set sampling is known to be a viable alternative, where one selects k units (instead of one) from each ranked set. In this article, we consider estimation of the distribution function based on k-tuple ranked set samples when the cost of selecting and ranking units is not ignorable. We investigate estimation both in the balanced and unbalanced data case. Properties of the estimation procedure in the presence of ranking error are also investigated. Results of simulation studies as well as an application to a real data set are presented to illustrate some of the theoretical findings.  相似文献

We consider a search design for the 2m type such that at most knonnegative effects can be searched among (l+1)-factor interactions and estimated along with the effects up to l- factor interactions, provided (l+1)-factor and higher order interactions are negligible except for the k effects. We investigate some properties of a search design which is yielded by a balanced 2m design of resolution 2l+1 derived from a balanced array of strength 2(l+1). A necessary and sufficient condition for the balanced design of resolution 2l+1 to be a search design for k=1 is given. Optimal search designs for k=1 in the class of the balanced 2m designs of resolution V (l=2), with respect to the AD-optimality criterion given by Srivastava (1977), with N assemblies are also presented, where the range of (m,N) is (m=6; 28≤N≤41), (m=7; 35≤N≤63) and (m=8; 44≤N≤74).  相似文献

Let (X1,…,Xk) be a multinomial vector with unknown cell probabilities (p1,?,pk). A subset of the cells is to be selected in a way so that the cell associated with the smallest cell probability is included in the selected subset with a preassigned probability, P1. Suppose the loss is measured by the size of the selected subset, S. Using linear programming techniques, selection rules can be constructed which are minimax with respect to S in the class of rules which satisfy the P1-condition. In some situations, the rule constructed by this method is the rule proposed by Nagel (1970). Similar techniques also work for selection in terms of the largest cell probability.  相似文献

The criterion of admissibility has been considered as one of the most important criterion in decision theory and many important results have been contributed in this direction. In this article, we propose a more flexible criterion, so-called ?-admissibility (which can be considered as weak admissibility), which generates a monotone sequence of classes of estimators. The limit of this sequence, class of 0+-admissible estimators, is the smallest class including the class of usual admissible estimators, which also belongs to the monotone sequence. Some sufficient and necessary conditions are proposed for ?-admissibility and 0+-admissibility. Under some weighted square loss, it can be shown that the usual MLE is 0+-admissible for the multivariate normal distribution and the multivariate Poisson distribution.  相似文献
