ABSTRACT

Motivated by an example in marine science, we use Fisher’s method to combine independent likelihood ratio tests (LRTs) and asymptotic independent score tests to assess the equivalence of two zero-inflated Beta populations (mixture distributions with three parameters). For each test, test statistics for the three individual parameters are combined into a single statistic to address the overall difference between the two populations. We also develop non parametric and semiparametric permutation-based tests for simultaneously comparing two or three features of unknown populations. Simulations show that the likelihood-based tests perform well for large sample sizes and that the statistics based on combining LRT statistics outperforms the ones based on combining score test statistics. The permutation-based tests have overall better performance in terms of both power and type I error rate. Our methods are easy to implement and computationally efficient, and can be expanded to more than two populations and to other multiple parameter families. The permutation tests are entirely generic and can be useful in various applications dealing with zero (or other) inflation.  相似文献

The Pearson chi‐squared statistic for testing the equality of two multinomial populations when the categories are nominal is much less appropriate for ordinal categories. Test statistics typically used in this context are based on scorings of the ordinal levels, but the results of these tests are highly dependent on the choice of scores. The authors propose a test which naturally modifies the Pearson chi‐squared statistic to incorporate the ordinal information. The proposed test statistic does not depend on the scores and under the null hypothesis of equality of populations, it is asymptotically equivalent to the likelihood ratio test against the alternative of two‐sided likelihood ratio ordering.  相似文献

We propose a new procedure for combining multiple tests in samples of right-censored observations. The new method is based on multiple constrained censored empirical likelihood where the constraints are formulated as linear functionals of the cumulative hazard functions. We prove a version of Wilks’ theorem for the multiple constrained censored empirical likelihood ratio, which provides a simple reference distribution for the test statistic of our proposed method. A useful application of the proposed method is, for example, examining the survival experience of different populations by combining different weighted log-rank tests. Real data examples are given using the log-rank and Gehan-Wilcoxon tests. In a simulation study of two sample survival data, we compare the proposed method of combining tests to previously developed procedures. The results demonstrate that, in addition to its computational simplicity, the combined test performs comparably to, and in some situations more reliably than previously developed procedures. The problem of testing the similarity of two normal populations is reconsidered, in this article, from a nonclassical point of view. We introduce a test statistic based on the maximum likelihood estimate of Weitzman's overlapping coefficient. Simulated critical points are provided for the proposed test for various sample sizes and significance levels. Statistical powers of the proposed test are computed via simulation studies and compared to those of the existing tests. Furthermore, Type-I error robustness of the proposed and the existing tests are studied via simulation studies when the underlying distributions are non-normal. Two data sets are analyzed for illustration purposes. Finally, the proposed test has been implemented to assess the bioequivalence of two drug formulations.  相似文献

Weed, Bradley and Grovindarajulu (1974) propose one-sample probability ratio tests based on Lehmann alternatives. They also study the finite sure termination of the stopping times. Motivated by Stein's proof of (1946) of the termination of a sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) in the case of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables and the work of Sethuraman (1970) for the two- sample rank order SPRT, we obtain a very mild condition (namely, that a certain random variable U(Z) is not identically zero) for the finite sure termination of the existence of the moment generating function (m.g.f.) for the stopping time of one- sample rank order SPRT's.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose several tests for detecting difference in means and variances simultaneously between two populations under normality. First of all, we propose a likelihood ratio test. Then we obtain an expression of the likelihood ratio statistic by a product of two functions of random quantities, which can be used to test the two individual partial hypotheses for differences in means and variances. With those individual partial tests, we propose a union-intersection test. Also we consider two optimal tests by combining the p-values of the two individual partial tests. For obtaining null distributions, we apply the permutation principle with the Monte Carlo approach. Then we compare efficiency among the proposed tests with well-known ones through a simulation study. Finally, we discuss some interesting features related to the simultaneous tests and resampling methods as concluding remarks.  相似文献

Let p independent test statistics be available to test a null hypothesis concerned with the same parameter. The p are assumed to be similar tests. Asymptotic and non-asymptotic optimality properties of combined tests are studied. The asymptotic study centers around two notions. The first is Bahadur efficiency. The second is based on a notion of second order comparisons. The non-asymptotic study is concerned with admissibility questions. Most of the popular combining methods are considered along with a method not studied in the past. Among the results are the following: Assume each of the p statistics has the same Bahadur slope. Then the combined test based on the sum of normal transforms, is asymptotically best among all tests studied, by virtue of second order considerations. Most of the popular combined tests are inadmissible for testing the noncentrality parameter of chi-square, t, and F distributions. For chi-square a combined test is offered which is admissible, asymptotically optimal (first order), asymptotically optimal (second order) among all tests studied, and for which critical values are obtainable in special cases. In this paper, we investigate different procedures for testing the equality of two mean survival times in paired lifetime studies. We consider Owen’s M-test and Q-test, a likelihood ratio test, the paired t-test, the Wilcoxon signed rank test and a permutation test based on log-transformed survival times in the comparative study. We also consider the paired t-test, the Wilcoxon signed rank test and a permutation test based on original survival times for the sake of comparison. The size and power characteristics of these tests are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations under a frailty Weibull model. For less skewed marginal distributions, the Wilcoxon signed rank test based on original survival times is found to be desirable. Otherwise, the M-test and the likelihood ratio test are the best choices in terms of power. In general, one can choose a test procedure based on information about the correlation between the two survival times and the skewness of the marginal survival distributions.  相似文献

Three goodness-of-fit tests for exponentiality based on the functional equation characterization 1?F(2x)=[1?F(x)]2 for every x?0 are proposed and shown to compare well to several popular tests against common alternative cdf's. In this paper we face the problem of testing the equality of two or more parameters of a multinomial distribution. We develop a likelihood ratio test and we consider an asymptotically equivalent Pearson's statistic. Moreover we develop an exact and a randomized test. Relationships between these tests are then discussed. The behaviour of these tests is studied by simulations. Results from two known tests developed for less general situations are compared to ours.  相似文献

There are a number of situations in which the experimental data observed are record statistics. In this paper, optimal confidence intervals as well as uniformly most powerful (MP) tests for one-sided alternatives are developed. Since a uniformly MP test for a two-sided alternative does not exist, generalized likelihood ratio and uniformly unbiased and invariant tests are derived for the two parameters of the exponential distribution based on record data. For illustrative purposes, a data set on the times between consecutive telephone calls to a company's switchboard is analysed using the proposed procedures. Finally, some open problems in this direction are pointed out.  相似文献

Two-phase regression models with inequality constraints on the regression coefficients and with a small number of measurements is considered. A new test based on the likelihood ratio in linear model with inequality constraints for the presence of a change-point is proposed. Numerical approximations to the powers against various alternatives are given and compared with the powers of the likelihood ratio test in the two-phase regression models without inequality constraints, the backwards CUSUM test, and the k-linear-r-ahead recursive residuals tests. Performance of related likelihood based estimators of the change-point is briefly studied in a Monte Carlo experiment.  相似文献

We revisit the problem of testing homoscedasticity (or, equality of variances) of several normal populations which has applications in many statistical analyses, including design of experiments. The standard text books and widely used statistical packages propose a few popular tests including Bartlett's test, Levene's test and a few adjustments of the latter. Apparently, the popularity of these tests have been based on limited simulation study carried out a few decades ago. The traditional tests, including the classical likelihood ratio test (LRT), are asymptotic in nature, and hence do not perform well for small sample sizes. In this paper we propose a simple parametric bootstrap (PB) modification of the LRT, and compare it against the other popular tests as well as their PB versions in terms of size and power. Our comprehensive simulation study bursts some popularly held myths about the commonly used tests and sheds some new light on this important problem. Though most popular statistical software/packages suggest using Bartlette's test, Levene's test, or modified Levene's test among a few others, our extensive simulation study, carried out under both the normal model as well as several non-normal models clearly shows that a PB version of the modified Levene's test (which does not use the F-distribution cut-off point as its critical value), and Loh's exact test are the “best” performers in terms of overall size as well as power.  相似文献

This paper deals with testing equality of variances of observations in the different treatment groups assuming treatment effects are fixed. We study the distribution of a test statistic which is known to perform comparably well with other statistics for the same purpose under normality. The statistic we consider is based on Shannon’s entropy for a distribution function. We will derive the asymptotic expansion for the distribution of the test statistic based on Shannon’s entropy under nonnormality and numerically examine its performance in comparison with the modified likelihood ratio criteria for normal and some nonnormal populations.   相似文献

Five tests of homogeneity for a 2x(k+l) contingency table are compared using Monte Carlo techniques. For these studiesit is assumed that k becomes large in such a way that thecontingency table is sparse for 2xk of the cells, but the sample size in two of the cells remains large. The test statistics studied are: the chi-square approximation to the Pearson test statistic, the chi-square approximation to the likelihood ratio statistic, the normal approximation to Zelterman's (1984)the normal approximation to Pearson's chi-square, and the normal approximation to the likelihood ratio statistic. For the range of parameters studied the chi-square approximation to Pearson's statistic performs consistently well with regard to its size and power.  相似文献

Consider the model of k populations whose densities are nonreg-ular in the sense that they involve one or two unknown truncation parameters. In this paper a unified treatment of the problem of Bahadur efficiency of the likelihood ratio test for such a model is presented. This paper presents some powerful omnibus tests for multivariate normality based on the likelihood ratio and the characterizations of the multivariate normal distribution. The power of the proposed tests is studied against various alternatives via Monte Carlo simulations. Simulation studies show our tests compare well with other powerful tests including multivariate versions of the Shapiro–Wilk test and the Anderson–Darling test.  相似文献

We consider maximum likelihood estimation and likelihood ratio tests under inequality restrictions on the parameters. A special case are order restrictions, which may appear for example in connection with effects of an ordinal qualitative covariate. Our estimation approach is based on the principle of sequential quadratic programming, where the restricted estimate is computed iteratively and a quadratic optimization problem under inequality restrictions is solved in each iteration. Testing for inequality restrictions is based on the likelihood ratio principle. Under certain regularity assumptions the likelihood ratio test statistic is asymptotically distributed like a mixture of χ2, where the weights are a function of the restrictions and the information matrix. A major problem in theory is that in general there is no unique least favourable point. We present some empirical findings on finite-sample behaviour of tests and apply the methods to examples from credit scoring and dentistry.  相似文献
