Increasingly, organizations in general, and social service organizations, specifically, are recognizing the importance of planning and evaluating organizational wellness initiatives. Yet, few participatory models for carrying out these aims exist. For this study, researchers utilized concept mapping (CM) to explicate a conceptual framework for planning, and subsequently evaluating, a wellness initiative at a multi-state social service organization. CM is a participatory approach that analyzes qualitative data via multi-dimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analyses. Outputs include a number of visual depictions that allow researchers to explore complex relationships among sets of the data. Results from this study indicated that participants (N = 64), all of whom were employees of the agency, conceptualized organizational wellness via an eight-cluster solution, or Concept Map. Priority areas of this framework, specifically importance and feasibility, were also explored. After a brief review of pertinent literature, this article explicates the CM methodology utilized in this study, describes results, discusses lessons learned, and identifies apt areas for future research.  相似文献

In order to study perceptions of college males and females relating to male responsibility for abortion decisions, 274 college students (122 males and 152 females) were provided a questionnaire. Characteristics of the students were: ages 18-24, 95.6% unmarried, 86.9% white, 75% freshmen, 51% Protestants. Data reveal that students agree on shared responsibility for an abortion decision when a couple is married. About 81.8% indicated they felt an abortion decision for an unplanned pregnancy in a marriage should be made only with the complete support and agreement of the male. 54.5% agreed that both partners should share completely in the decision when a couple is engaged. Students feel less strongly about the complete involvement of the male in abortion decision making in other situations of unplanned pregnancy. 33% indicated that the male should be completely involved in the decision of a repeat abortion but only 25% felt that the male should share responsibility for an abortion when the couple is dating steadily and 20% said that the male should share in the decision when a couple is no longer in a relationship. In the situation of a single sexual encounter most females indicated that the male should not share in the responsibility for an abortion decision. Students who indicated a high level of religious activity desired both male and female to be either completely or very much involved in the responsibility for the abortion. This study points out the need for more research on the male's experience with an unplanned pregnancy, more systematic explanation of his perceptions relative to seeking and obtaining pregnancy counseling, and level of satisfaction with such counseling.  相似文献

This article explores the history of the federal Adoption Incentive Program, the first federal child welfare outcome-based incentive program to rely solely on administrative data, and discusses it within the context of other prior and ongoing federal child welfare incentive programs. Various data-related issues are also examined, including the use of data to project program utilization and costs, set baselines for the number of adoptions, and award funds. Challenges in the legislatively required use of AFCARS data for determining the amount of incentive funds awarded and the impact of the program on AFCARS reporting are also discussed. The article concludes with a look at the impact of the Adoption Incentive Program on adoption and predictions for the future.  相似文献

African American children are overrepresented in foster care by more than twice their proportion in the population (U.S. Government Accountability Office [USGAO], 2007). Building upon research relating faith (religiosity) to positive health and mental health, this study utilized cognitive and religious coping theories to examine the influence of faith on choosing to adopt, achieving positive adoption outcomes, and reducing disproportionality. From Louisiana and Texas, 113 families who adopted 226 children, 48% African American, participated in a survey measuring children's behavior and parent distress (PSI-SF Difficult Child and Parent Distress Subscales) and religiosity (Hoge Intrinsic Religiosity Index). Of the respondents, 93% of the respondents belonged to a religious congregation, 86% attended church weekly. Controlling for child's behavior, religiosity predicted lower stress in adoptive parenting; church attendance was related to improvement in parental health since adopting. Faith was rated most frequently as essential in parents' decisions to adopt. The study concludes that faith may be an asset in increasing adoptions and improving adoption outcomes resulting in increased numbers of African American children adopted.  相似文献

Most family business research on managing work and family conflict focuses on the family unit while ignoring non-family employees. This study investigates how family businesses manage the work and family conflicts facing non-family employees by examining the adoption of work–family practices in family-owned firms. Two research questions are addressed. First, to what extent do family-owned firms adopt work–family practices? Second, do family-owned firms offer the same level of work–family practices as non-family-owned firms? Results indicate that when family-owned firms do adopt work–family practices, they favour flexible scheduling arrangements for non-family employees to reduce work–family conflict. In general, however, work–family practices are used less in family-owned firms than non-family-owned firms.  相似文献

In Canada, there are long waiting lists of adopted persons and birthparents seeking information or actual reunions. In the province of Quebec, the government authorized a pilot project, involving a fee-for-service program and use of contract social workers to supplement agency staff as intermediaries in the reunion process. This article reports on the project's evaluation and provides birth-parents' and adoptees' responses to reunion. A survey of clients who used this service found a high level of satisfaction. There were, however, some significant differences between birthparents and adoptees as well as between those who were searching and those found.  相似文献

Open adoption offers advantages for adopted persons which are not available in traditional adoption. Having access, to information about their biological heritage allows adopted persons to integrate their adoptive, history with their biological history. This integration enables resolution of normal developmental crisis. Openness also helps facilitate communication between the adoptee and the adoptive parents. Adoptive parents are then able to recognize, and provide support, when their child is grieving the loss of the birthparents.  相似文献

Theoretical conceptualizations of the structure/agency relationship have been central to the development of the discipline, yet tend to exhibit two major limitations. First, they share a relatively disembodied view of the agent which overemphasizes cognition and marginalizes the significance of the emotional dimensions of interaction for human action and social structure. Second, most have difficulty maintaining the causal significance of both the 'people' and the 'parts' of the social system and are, therefore, unable to examine adequately their interplay. This paper suggests these problems are related, and examines the contribution recent formulations of the 'interaction order' can make toward overcoming the difficulties characteristic of this key sociological debate. The 'interaction order' identifies the embodied dimensions of interaction as consequential for, yet irreducible to, structures and agents, enables us to investigate the 'loose coupling' of interaction to individuals and social systems, but is underdeveloped in important respects. This paper addresses these limitations. It also highlights the utility for the structure/agency debate of identifying a sector of embodied interactions concerned with the maintenance of social selves, and suggests how this somatic sector of social life might be developed analytically.  相似文献

This paper attempts to illustrate how adoption is understood by children according to their developmental stages within the context of their families. Illustrations of children's thought processes and inner fantasies are presented in the form of interviews and observations. The inner thoughts and experiences of adoptive parents are also presented, from the time of the application process through infancy, toddlerhood, school age and adolescence. A major thesis is that adoptive parents who are comfortable with their own feelings about the birthparents and the child's specific history are more able to provide an atmosphere where the child feels valued when she asks questions or communicates fantasies about her story. Hypotheses from diffusion and resource dependence theory are applied to the explanation of participation in external networking (inter-networking) by schools. A national probability sample of 571 U.S. K-12 schools was used to test factors predicting schools’ use of external networks for instructional purposes. Early (vs late) adoption of computers did not predict later involvement in networking. Neither school spending nor rural region predicted network participation, except through the intervening variable of computer density. Thus, no matter how a school has acquired computers, once the base has been established it serves as an essential ingredient in taking the next step into external networking. The results were disappointing for diffusion theory and certainly point toward further investigation of this phenomenon. The findings also point to the importance of building a technological infrastructure in order to boost and leverage many of the instructional reform initiatives in education. where he has been since completing his Ph.D. at Stanford University in 1970. The purpose of child care information and referral (I & R) agencies is to link providers and parents, furnishing information that enables the latter to make informed decisions about placements. This investigation evaluated one I & R agency in order to determine what segment of the population used its services and whether the information it provided was useful. The subjects were parents who had called the agency during a specified five-week period. Results indicated that although the services of the agency were rated quite highly, most parents did not effectively use the information to reach informed decisions. Implications of these results for the development of more effective I & R services are discussed.  相似文献
