Computer-based manufacturing planning and control (MPC) systems are widely used in industry to gain competitive advantage through integration and coordination of managerial activities. In collegiate business schools, important operations management activities are taught and studied, often by sequential examination of discrete topics such as aggregate production planning, master production scheduling, capacity planning, material planning, and production activity control. This paper explores the potential use of industrial MPC software in the classroom to create experiential learning activities that address the dynamic and integrative nature of operations management. Experiences with this pedagogical approach over the past decade are reported.  相似文献

This paper critically reviews the progress and state of multilevel decomposition models for the firm and its management. The presentation introduces and summarizes the fundamental ideas and also gives concise statements concerning advanced developments. The pricing approach, and the budgeting approaches are the two approaches considered. For managerial planning, initial starting solutions, iteration processes, and stopping rules are important algorithmic and organizational considerations. Further, in decentralized organizations, the motivations for cheating in planning, incentives for innovation, and reactions to uncertainty require attention. For these approaches one concludes that further theoretical work designed especially for managerial relevance needs to be developed. Despite these deficiencies, the practitioner need not wait for all the answers as the currently employed methods of pricing and budgeting for planning suffer the same deficiencies, and yet lack the power to choose better plans as the multilevel decomposition approach offers.  相似文献

Abstract

In a future of complexity, uncertainty and fragmented governance we envision planning graduates who will be better prepared for the real world of planning as a result of an experiential learning (EL) approach in undergraduate tertiary education. In this paper, we present the findings of an Australian research project in which planning educators developed and tested a range of experiential planning principles based on sound pedagogical theory. Embedding EL principles and activities within the planning curriculum provides a structured programme of engagement between theory and practice over the four years of an undergraduate Australian planning programme, including opportunities for work-integrated learning. Students gain experience in negotiated decision-making involving a wide range of interactions with planning practitioners. Students become more adaptable—cognizant of mechanisms influencing change, and recognize the value of lifelong learning founded on critical reflection. We propose that a more systematic approach to integrating experiential learning in tertiary planning education culminating in ‘work integrated learning’ would provide a vehicle for further partnerships with responsive local practitioners and communities. Finally, this paper also argues that applying experiential learning does not compromise the quality of planning education based on greater academic rigour.  相似文献

In an earlier article the author discussed the contingency approach to planning as a flexible managerial tool making it possible to find a good fit between the planning process and the organization. In the present article the contingency approach is applied to the product life cycle to show how the different steps in the planning process can be varied as the situation changes. The contingency approach to planning can be used in a similar fashion for a product line, a product division, or the entire organization.  相似文献

While as a distinct and intermittent managerial activity planning is slowly dying, in a systematic and continuous context it is rapidly growing! More and more organizations are beginning to realize that planning entails ongoing learning and adaptation of people rather than one-shot, pseudo-scientific analysis of abstract problems. To facilitate this fundamental transformation in organizational thinking, new electronic management support systems are being created. These systems will facilitate collaborative problem exploration through improved managerial communication. In effect, they will actively assist managers to understand and manage the relationships between the strategic planning process and the other corporate processes such as budgeting, capital investment, performance evaluation and employee compensation.  相似文献

This paper examines the proposition that action learning is a new paradigm in management education. Action learning is becoming widely accepted methodology for the development of managers and managerial competence. This is in both public and private sector organizations and within the context of certificated and organisationally based programmes. The paper seeks to use Kuhn's work on the nature of paradigms and change as a way of explaining the increase of interest in his approach. Importantly, although this approach promises to answer some of the problems of traditional management education, it is not without its own critics. Kuhn's criteria for a paradigm change are explained with reference to action learning literature and knowledge of practice. From this a framework is developed that compares a traditional approach to management education with an action learning approach on three levels. Our conclusion is that action learning is a new paradigm, but for the maximum benefit to be gained from the approach its application needs to be more carefully considered, particularly in relation to the provision of some wider external frameworks for the manager to use as‘tools for thinking’  相似文献

In benchmarking, organizations look outward to examine others’ performance in their industry or sector. Often, they can learn from the best practices of some of them and improve. In order to develop this idea within the framework of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), this paper extends the common benchmarking framework proposed in Ruiz and Sirvent (2016) to an approach based on the benchmarking of decision making units (DMUs) against several reference sets. We refer to this approach as cross-benchmarking. First, we design a procedure aimed at making a selection of reference sets (as defined in DEA), which establish the common framework for the benchmarking. Next, benchmarking models are formulated which allow us to set the closest targets relative to the reference sets selected. The availability of a wider spectrum of targets may offer managers the possibility of choosing among alternative ways for improvements, taking into account what can be learned from the best practices of different peer groups. Thus, cross-benchmarking is a flexible tool that can support a process of future planning while considering different managerial implications.  相似文献

The common approach to balancing mixed-model assembly lines assumes that the line operators are well trained and that the learning effect is negligible. The assumption is that the line operates in steady state over a long period of time. Time-based competition and frequent design changes in many products make this assumption incorrect, and the effect of learning on mixed-model lines should not be neglected. We defined start-up period and developed a model for the line design during start-up. It can be used to evaluate a proposed line design or to develop a feasible line design and to estimate its cost. This proposed model integrates mixed-model learning curves with aggregate planning under learning and a mixed-model line design into a comprehensive framework designed to minimize the total cost of the line during the start-up period.  相似文献

Greater interdependence among workers and activities not only increases the need for internal communication, but it also imposes complications and barriers to effective information exchange. Intraorganizational communication capabilities of certain information systems can help overcome these barriers. However, the extent to which certain systems are promoted as communication tools depends largely on management's interpretation of their usefulness, which in turn may be largely dependent on operational context and managerial experience. We use a controlled experimental approach to study how these issues interact to impact managerial assessments of resource planning systems. Results show that managers value the communication capabilities of resource planning systems more so in highly task‐interdependent contexts and that these assessments are still more positive among managers with greater supervisory experience. As a result, these findings pose direct implications regarding the management support of technology use.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of aggregate production planning (APP) for a multinational lingerie company in Hong Kong. The multi-site production planning problem considers the production loading plans among manufacturing factories subject to certain restrictions, such as production import/export quotas imposed by regulatory requirements of different nations, the use of manufacturing factories/locations with regard to customers' preferences, as well as production capacity, workforce level, storage space and resource conditions of the factories. In this paper, a multi-objective model is developed to solve the production planning problems, in which the profit is maximized but production penalties resulting from going over/under quotas and the change in workforce level are minimized. To enhance the practical implications of the proposed model, different managerial production loading plans are evaluated according to changes in future policy and situation. Numerical results demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the developed model.  相似文献

This paper deals with a study which the authors undertook of the planning function in five major U.S. corporations. None of the five engaged in true strategic planning. The authors advance explanations for this relatively low level of planning activity, based on the environmental, organizational, and managerial characteristics of the firms. The authors urge the rapid development of a more sophisticated contingency theory of corporate planning to facilitate practice, teaching, and research.  相似文献

This paper attempts to define the role of the clinical director (CD) with reference to the strategic contribution they can make to health service organizations. Drawing on reflections and evidence gained from developing, running and evaluating a three-year, regionally based, management development programme for CDs, three ways of potentially enhancing strategic capability are identified. These are to do with promoting knowledge connectivity, challenging the dominant managerial logic and acting as a link-pin in inter- and intra-organizational learning networks. 本文沿着中国企业激励制度市场化改革和全球公司治理趋同这两条主线,基于超越最优契约范式的市场配置视角、经理权力视角以及契约订立过程中的参照点效应,提出了关于中国上市公司高管薪酬决定因素的三组理论假设。基于502家上市公司2001至2006年平衡面板数据的实证研究显示,高管薪酬水平的上升反映了市场对经理才能日益增长的竞争性需求,但旨在约束经理权力、构架完备的公司治理机制并未发挥有效作用。此外,国际同行的薪酬基准对中国公司的高管薪酬决策具有参照点效应,这种薪酬设定过程中存在的参照点效应因薪酬委员会的存在而被放大。  相似文献

Battery electric vehicles as well as renewable energy are two key factors that can contribute significantly to sustainable development within the transportation and the energy sector. However, the market introduction of these technologies results in new challenges, especially with regard to the interaction between both sectors. So far, neither location models for charging stations nor load flow models for the electrical grid consider these interactions sufficiently. Thus, an integration of planning problems from both sectors is needed in order to exploit potential synergies and to avoid negative impacts.In this paper, we present such an integrated planning approach to locate charging infrastructure for battery electric vehicles considering interactions with the electrical grid. Herein, we combine a charging station location model and a power flow model with integrated energy stores. We aim at determining a network configuration that satisfies the charging demand of battery electric vehicles, herein maximizing the benefits and minimizing the negative impacts resulting from the interactions of the two sectors. To demonstrate the benefit of our integrated planning approach, we apply it to an illustrative case and present results of a sensitivity analysis. We derive managerial insights regarding the interdependencies of the number of sited charging stations and the installed storage capacity based on renewable energy generation and charging demand.  相似文献

Team learning is vital for organizations in order to compete in fast-paced environments. However, the ways learning can be effective in such environments warrents research, especially for teams developing new products under rapidly changing technological and market conditions. Interestingly, recent new product development (NPD) literature demonstrates the essential role of improvisation (i.e., planning and executing any action simultaneously) and unlearning (i.e., changes in team beliefs and project routines) for effective learning and performing under turbulent conditions. However, the combined effect of team improvisation and unlearning on new product success (NPS) has largely been ignored. This paper investigates the nomological relations among team improvisation and unlearning, new product success, and environmental turbulence, and contributes to the literature on NPD team learning, and on team flexibility under turbulent conditions. By examining 197 new product-development projects, we found that (1) environmental turbulence positively affects team unlearning, (2) team unlearning concurrently stimulates team improvisation, (3) team improvisation positively impacts new product success by utilizing/implementing new knowledge acquired by unlearning and improvisation. We further discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of our conclusions.  相似文献

Contingency models of information systems planning predict that no single planning approach will suit all organizations' needs. Little empirical research has been undertaken, however, to evaluate this prediction. Accordingly, we used McFarlan, McKenney, and Pyburn's (1983) strategic-grid model to study the information systems planning problems encountered by 49 governmental agencies. Twenty-seven agencies were required to follow a planning approach best suited to organizations that had a high level of dependence on both their existing and proposed systems. We predicted that agencies not having these characteristics would encounter the most problems with the approach. The remaining 22 agencies could choose their own planning approach. We studied this latter group to determine whether the problems encountered by the first group could be attributed to the mandated approach. Overall, the empirical results obtained were equivocal. Some results indicated that more planning problems were encountered by agencies in which the mandated approach was not appropriate to their position in the strategic grid. Other results were not supportive of this proposition. More work needs to be undertaken, therefore, to evaluate the predictive and explanatory power of contingency models of information systems planning. In addition, our research indicates a need to develop more rigorous theories of information systems planning behaviors, to improve the instruments needed to measure these behaviors, to explore the relationship between information systems planning behaviours and organizational effectiveness, to investigate how organizational learning impacts planning behaviors, and to determine the types of information systems planning problems that diffuse through organizations and those that remain localized.  相似文献

This paper investigates the initial planning process for the transition of an organization from a R & D environment to an Operations environment. Using a developed transition life cycle model, the paper demonstrates a four step analysis of the management of the transition. Further, the paper suggests the utilization of existing methods for achieving a smooth transformation under various levels of technical, political, cultural, managerial, and economic uncertainties. Finally, the paper lists possible courses of action and considerations for the transition once the initial planning stage is completed. The concepts herein were used to begin planning the change, from R & D to Operations, of the Space Shuttle Program at NASA.  相似文献

We model production planning for made-to-order (MTO) manufacturing by choosing production rate to minimize expected discounted cost incurred up to a promised delivery date. Products that are MTO are often unique and customized. The associated learning curve slope and other production parameters cannot be precisely estimated before production starts. In this paper, a dynamic and adaptive approach to estimate the effects of learning and to optimize next period production is developed. This approach offers a closed-loop solution through stochastic dynamic programming. Monthly production data are used to update the joint probability distributions of production parameters via Bayesian methods. Our approach is illustrated using historical earned-value data from the Black Hawk Helicopter Program. Managerial insights are obtained and discussed.  相似文献
