In this paper we develop a Bayesian approach to detecting unit roots in autoregressive panel data models. Our method is based on the comparison of stationary autoregressive models with and without individual deterministic trends, to their counterpart models with a unit autoregressive root. This is done under cross-sectional dependence among the error terms of the panel units. Simulation experiments are conducted with the aim to assess the performance of the suggested inferential procedure, as well as to investigate if the Bayesian model comparison approach can distinguish unit root models from stationary autoregressive models under cross-sectional dependence. The approach is applied to real exchange rate series for a panel of the G7 countries and to a panel of US nominal interest rates data.  相似文献

Determining whether per capita output can be characterized by a stochastic trend is complicated by the fact that infrequent breaks in trend can bias standard unit root tests towards nonrejection of the unit root hypothesis. The bulk of the existing literature has focused on the application of unit root tests allowing for structural breaks in the trend function under the trend stationary alternative but not under the unit root null. These tests, however, provide little information regarding the existence and number of trend breaks. Moreover, these tests suffer from serious power and size distortions due to the asymmetric treatment of breaks under the null and alternative hypotheses. This article estimates the number of breaks in trend employing procedures that are robust to the unit root/stationarity properties of the data. Our analysis of the per capita gross domestic product (GDP) for Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries thereby permits a robust classification of countries according to the “growth shift,” “level shift,” and “linear trend” hypotheses. In contrast to the extant literature, unit root tests conditional on the presence or absence of breaks do not provide evidence against the unit root hypothesis.  相似文献

This paper extends the class of asset-based style factor models with multiple structural breaks to the multivariate setting. We propose a model that allows for the presence of common breaks in a system of factor models for individual hedge fund investment strategies, which share common investment characteristics. We develop a Bayesian approach to inference for the unknown number and positions of the structural breaks, based on a set of filtering recursions similar to those of the forward–backward algorithm. Furthermore, we identify relevant risk factors, common among the series of hedge funds, using a Bayesian model comparison approach. We apply our method to a set of correlated hedge fund strategies, which are mainly characterized by equity related bets. Multiple common breaks are identified, consistent with well-known market events, which reveal evidence for structural changes in the risk exposures as well as in the correlation structure of the analysed series.  相似文献

In the conventional hypothesis-testing approach to the detection of a unit root and a trend break, selections of the outlier type (additive or innovational) and of the break type (jump or kink) are carried out arbitrarily, because there is no generally accepted statistical technique. To overcome this problem, a model-selection approach using the modified Bayesian information criterion (MBIC) is proposed. Whether the observed time series contains a unit root and a trend break is determined as a result of model selection from among alternative models with and without unit root and trend break. The efficacy of the proposed approach is verified using comprehensive simulations.  相似文献

Recent research (though sometimes disputed) has demonstrated that structural breaks can affect inference about unit roots. The present paper presents a selective survey of the literature on structural breaks, on tests for unit roots and on tests for unit roots under structural breaks. In this article, we consider Bayesian inference procedures to test for a unit root in Stochastic Volatility (SV) models. Unit-root tests for the persistence parameter of the SV models, based on the Bayes Factor (BF), have been recently introduced in the literature. In contrast, we propose a flexible class of priors that is non-informative over the entire support of the persistence parameter (including the non-stationarity region). In addition, we show that our model fitting procedure is computationally efficient (using the software WinBUGS). Finally, we show that our proposed test procedures have good frequentist properties in terms of achieving high statistical power, while maintaining low total error rates. We illustrate the above features of our method by extensive simulation studies, followed by an application to a real data set on exchange rates.  相似文献

Structural breaks in the level as well as in the volatility have often been exhibited in economic time series. In this paper, we propose new unit root tests when a time series has multiple shifts in its level and the corresponding volatility. The proposed tests are Lagrangian multiplier type tests based on the residual's marginal likelihood which is free from the nuisance mean parameters. The limiting null distributions of the proposed tests are the χ2distributions, and are affected not by the size and the location of breaks but only by the number of breaks.

We set the structural breaks under both the null and the alternative hypotheses to relieve a possible vagueness in interpreting test results in empirical work. The null hypothesis implies a unit root process with level shifts and the alternative connotes a stationary process with level shifts. The Monte Carlo simulation shows that our tests are locally more powerful than the OLSE-based tests, and that the powers of our tests, in a fixed time span, remain stable regardless the number of breaks. In our application, we employ the data which are analyzed by Perron (1990), and some results differ from those of Perron's (1990).  相似文献

The Perron test which is based on a Dickey–Fuller test regression is a commonly employed approach to test for a unit root in the presence of a structural break of unknown timing. In the case of an innovational outlier (IO), the Perron test tends to exhibit spurious rejections in finite samples when the break occurs under the null hypothesis. In the present paper, a new Perron-type IO unit root test is developed. It is shown in Monte Carlo experiments that the new test does not over-reject the null hypothesis. Even for the case of a level and slope break for trending data, the empirical size is near its nominal level. The test distribution equals the case of a known break date. Furthermore, the test is able to identify the true break date very accurately even for small breaks. As an application serves the Nelson–Plosser data set.  相似文献

Abstract

Traditional unit root tests display a tendency to be nonstationary in the case of structural breaks and nonlinearity. To eliminate this problem this paper proposes a new flexible Fourier form nonlinear unit root test. This test eliminates this problem to add structural breaks and nonlinearity together to the test procedure. In this test procedure, structural breaks are modeled by means of a Fourier function and nonlinear adjustment is modeled by means of an exponential smooth threshold autoregressive (ESTAR) model. The simulation results indicate that the proposed unit root test is more powerful than the Kruse and KSS tests.  相似文献

Even though integer-valued time series are common in practice, the methods for their analysis have been developed only in recent past. Several models for stationary processes with discrete marginal distributions have been proposed in the literature. Such processes assume the parameters of the model to remain constant throughout the time period. However, this need not be true in practice. In this paper, we introduce non-stationary integer-valued autoregressive (INAR) models with structural breaks to model a situation, where the parameters of the INAR process do not remain constant over time. Such models are useful while modelling count data time series with structural breaks. The Bayesian and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedures for the estimation of the parameters and break points of such models are discussed. We illustrate the model and estimation procedure with the help of a simulation study. The proposed model is applied to the two real biometrical data sets.  相似文献

通过推导Dickey-Fuller检验功效函数,研究表明:即使中小型的傅里叶型结构突变,都会严重影响Dickey-Fuller检验的功效,从而使得含傅里叶型平滑结构突变的平稳过程被误判为单位根过程。使用3、6、9个月期和一年期Shibor日度数据发现:传统的ADF、PP、DF-GLS和KPSS几乎都指出Shibor是单位根过程;考虑平滑结构突变的单位根检验则在1%的显著性水平下拒绝了单位根的原假设,这表明Shibor是含结构突变的平稳过程。因此,预测Shibor和理解其动态行为必须考虑其结构突变特征。  相似文献

Abstract

It is well known that prior application of GLS detrending, as advocated by Elliot et al. [Elliot, G., Rothenberg, T., Stock, J. (1996). Efficient tests for an autoregressive unit root. Econometrica 64:813–836], can produce a significant increase in power to reject the unit root null over that obtained from a conventional OLS-based Dickey and Fuller [Dickey, D., Fuller, W. (1979). Distribution of the estimators for autoregressive time series with a unit root. J. Am. Statist. Assoc. 74:427–431] testing equation. However, this paper employs Monte Carlo simulation to demonstrate that this increase in power is not necessarily obtained when breaks occur in either level or trend. It is found that neither OLS nor GLS-based tests are robust to level or trend breaks, their size and power properties both deteriorating as the break size increases.  相似文献

Panel data unit root tests, which can be applied to data that do not have many time series observations, are based on very restrictive error and deterministic component specification assumptions. In this paper, we develop a new, doubly modified estimator, based on which we propose a panel unit root test that allows for multiple structural breaks, linear and nonlinear trends, heteroscedasticity, serial correlation, and error cross‐section heterogeneity, when the number of time series observations is finite. The test has the additional perk that it is invariant to the initial condition.  相似文献

A common financial trading strategy involves exploiting mean-reverting behaviour of paired asset prices. Since a unit root test can be used to determine which pairs of assets appear to exhibit mean-reverting behaviour, we propose a new Bayesian unit root to detect the presence of a local unit root vs. mean-reverting nonlinear smooth transition heteroskedastic alternative hypotheses. This test procedure is based on the posterior odds. For simultaneous estimation and inference, we employ an adaptive Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme, which utilizes a mixture prior specification to solve the likelihood identification problem of the smoothing parameter and the autoregressive coefficient with a unit root. The size and power properties of the proposed method are examined via a simulation study. An empirical study examines the mean-reverting behaviour of price differential between stock and future.  相似文献

This article proposes a Bayesian analysis of a class of imperfect repair models, the ARA models. The choice of prior distributions and the computation of posterior distributions are discussed. The presentation is unified for all ARA models and many kinds of possible priors. A numerical study on the quality of the Bayesian estimators is presented, as well as a comparison with the maximum likelihood estimators. Due to the escalating growth of big data sets in recent years, new Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) parallel computing methods have been developed. These methods partition large data sets by observations into subsets. However, for Bayesian nested hierarchical models, typically only a few parameters are common for the full data set, with most parameters being group specific. Thus, parallel Bayesian MCMC methods that take into account the structure of the model and split the full data set by groups rather than by observations are a more natural approach for analysis. Here, we adapt and extend a recently introduced two-stage Bayesian hierarchical modeling approach, and we partition complete data sets by groups. In stage 1, the group-specific parameters are estimated independently in parallel. The stage 1 posteriors are used as proposal distributions in stage 2, where the target distribution is the full model. Using three-level and four-level models, we show in both simulation and real data studies that results of our method agree closely with the full data analysis, with greatly increased MCMC efficiency and greatly reduced computation times. The advantages of our method versus existing parallel MCMC computing methods are also described.  相似文献

This paper investigates the new prior distribution on the Unobserved-Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARCH) unit root test. Monte Carlo simulations show that the sample size is seriously effective in efficiency of Bayesian test. To improve the performance of Bayesian test for unit root, we propose a new Bayesian test that is robust in the presence of stationary and nonstationary Unobserved-ARCH. The finite sample property of the proposed test statistic is evaluated using Monte Carlo studies. Applying the developed method, we test the policy of daily exchange rate of the German Marc with respect to the Greek Drachma.  相似文献

The unit root problem plays a central role in empirical applications in the time series econometric literature. However, significance tests developed under the frequentist tradition present various conceptual problems that jeopardize the power of these tests, especially for small samples. Bayesian alternatives, although having interesting interpretations and being precisely defined, experience problems due to the fact that that the hypothesis of interest in this case is sharp or precise. The Bayesian significance test used in this article, for the unit root hypothesis, is based solely on the posterior density function, without the need of imposing positive probabilities to sets of zero Lebesgue measure. Furthermore, it is conducted under strict observance of the likelihood principle. It was designed mainly for testing sharp null hypotheses and it is called FBST for Full Bayesian Significance Test.  相似文献

Latent Markov models (LMMs) are widely used in the analysis of heterogeneous longitudinal data. However, most existing LMMs are developed in fully observed data without missing entries. The main objective of this study is to develop a Bayesian approach for analyzing the LMMs with non-ignorable missing data. Bayesian methods for estimation and model comparison are discussed. The empirical performance of the proposed methodology is evaluated through simulation studies. An application to a data set derived from National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 is presented.  相似文献

The main objective of this paper is to develop a full Bayesian analysis for the Birnbaum–Saunders (BS) regression model based on scale mixtures of the normal (SMN) distribution with right-censored survival data. The BS distributions based on SMN models are a very general approach for analysing lifetime data, which has as special cases the Student-t-BS, slash-BS and the contaminated normal-BS distributions, being a flexible alternative to the use of the corresponding BS distribution or any other well-known compatible model, such as the log-normal distribution. A Gibbs sample algorithm with Metropolis–Hastings algorithm is used to obtain the Bayesian estimates of the parameters. Moreover, some discussions on the model selection to compare the fitted models are given and case-deletion influence diagnostics are developed for the joint posterior distribution based on the Kullback–Leibler divergence. The newly developed procedures are illustrated on a real data set previously analysed under BS regression models.  相似文献
