Craig's theorem on the independence of quadratic forms in normal variates is traced from its first form, for iid standard normal variates, to the form for variates following an arbitrary nonsingular joint normal distribution. This article gives the main thrust of the development and makes recommendations on coverage of the theorem in courses and textbooks. The history of Craig's theorem is not a happy one. The authors of the earlier articles in the literature tended to make errors of a linear-algebraic nature. Authors of more recently published textbooks have given incorrect or misleadingly incomplete coverage of Craig's theorem and its proof.  相似文献

Many users of regression methods are attracted to the notion that it would be valuable to determine the relative importance of independent variables. This article demonstrates a method based on hierarchies that builds on previous efforts to decompose R 2 through incremental partitioning. The standard method of incremental partitioning has been to follow one order among the many possible orders available. By taking a hierarchical approach in which all orders of variables are used, the average independent contribution of a variable is obtained and an exact partitioning results. Much the same logic is used to divide the joint effect of a variable. The method is general and applicable to all regression methods, including ordinary least squares, logistic, probit, and log-linear regression. A validation test demonstrates that the algorithm is sensitive to the relationships in the data rather than the proportion of variability accounted for by the statistical model used.  相似文献

Beginning statistics at the undergraduate level can be taught by using a few geometric principles of linear vector space theory. Even formulas for simple sample means and variances can be derived with these principles by assuming a univariate linear statistical model. The least squares estimator of the sample mean is found by a perpendicular projection. The analogy of the bivariate model to the univariate model is indicated, and an analogous perpendicular projection solution for it is shown. Vector geometric diagrams illustrate the basic concepts.

Once the basic technique is understood, the appropriate application or perpendicular projections can be used to illustrate the problems of multicollinearity and tests of hypotheses in regression models. The translation of the geometric concepts into concrete algebraic equations is shown. The emphasis is on geometric thinking as a means of visualizing and thereby improving an understanding of methods of data analysis.  相似文献

Azzalini and Dalla Valle have recently discussed the multivariate skew normal distribution which extends the class of normal distributions by the addition of a shape parameter. The first part of the present paper examines further probabilistic properties of the distribution, with special emphasis on aspects of statistical relevance. Inferential and other statistical issues are discussed in the following part, with applications to some multivariate statistics problems, illustrated by numerical examples. Finally, a further extension is described which introduces a skewing factor of an elliptical density.  相似文献

Graphs are presented on which the empirical distribution function can be plotted to test the assumption of normality by the Lilliefors test. A second set of graphs is presented for using the Lilliefors test on exponential distributions. The graphs allow for tests at the 10 percent, 5 percent, and 1 percent levels of significance. Use of these graphs makes it easy for students in a first course in statistics to test normal and exponential distributions without having to unravel the mystery associated with putting together a chi-squared goodness-of-fit test.  相似文献

This department includes the two sections New Developments in Statistical Computing and Statistical Computing Software Reviews; suitable contents for each of these sections is described under the respective section heading. Articles submitted for the department, outside the two sections, should not be highly technical and should be relevant to the teaching or practice of statistical computing.

This section is similar in organization to a Book Review section in other journals; however, software of interest to statisticians is the subject of review here. Emphasis is on software for microcomputers. Programs that operate only in larger mainframe computers will seldom receive review. Normally, producers of programs make a copy of their product available to the Section Editor, who then selects one or more persons to test the product and prepare a review.

We develop a novel nonparametric likelihood ratio test for independence between two random variables using a technique that is free of the common constraints of defining a given set of specific dependence structures. Our methodology revolves around an exact density-based empirical likelihood ratio test statistic that approximates in a distribution-free fashion the corresponding most powerful parametric likelihood ratio test. We demonstrate that the proposed test is very powerful in detecting general structures of dependence between two random variables, including nonlinear and/or random-effect dependence structures. An extensive Monte Carlo study confirms that the proposed test is superior to the classical nonparametric procedures across a variety of settings. The real-world applicability of the proposed test is illustrated using data from a study of biomarkers associated with myocardial infarction. The maximum of k functions defined on R n , n ≥ 1, by f max (x) = max{f 1 (x),…, f k (x)}, ? x ? R n , can have important roles in Statistics, particularly in Classification. Through its relation with the Bayes error, which is the reference error in classification, it can serve to compute numerical bounds for errors in other classification schemes. It can also serve to define the joint L1-distance between more than two densities, which, in turn, will serve as a useful tool in Classification and Cluster Analyses. It has a vast potential application in digital image processing too. Finally, its versatile role can be seen in several numerical examples, related to the analysis of Fisher's classical iris data in multidimensional spaces.  相似文献

This article presents a new goodness-of-fit (GOF) test statistic for multiply Type II censored Exponential data. The new test also applies to ordinary Type II censored samples and complete samples, since those cases are special cases of multiply Type II censoring. This test statistic is based on a ratio of linear functions of order statistics. Empirical power studies confirm that this ratio test compares favorably to currently available GOF tests for ordinary Type II censored data. Three data analysis examples are provided that demonstrate the usefulness of this new test statistic.  相似文献

The evolution of computers is currently in a period of rapid change, stimulated by radically cheaper and smaller devices for processing and memory. These changes are certain to provide major opportunities and challenges for the use of computers in statistics. This article looks at history and current trends, in both general computing and statistical computing, with the goal of identifying key features and requirements for the near future. A discussion of the S language developed at Bell Laboratories illustrates some program design principles that can make future work on statistical programs more effective and more valuable.  相似文献

In this paper the researchers are presenting an upper bound for the distribution function of quadratic forms in normal vector with mean zero and positive definite covariance matrix. They also will show that the new upper bound is more precise than the one introduced by Okamoto [4] and the one introduced by Siddiqui [5]. Theoretical Error bounds for both, the new and Okamoto upper bounds are derived in this paper. For larger number of terms in any given positive definite quadratic form, a rough and easier upper bound is suggested.  相似文献
