The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Movement and Young People with Serious Physical Illnesses Who Support Building Communities of Care

In 2011–2012, a qualitative exploratory pilot study was conducted to examine the experiences of immigrant Mexican women using a culturally specific domestic violence intervention model curriculum in a Midwestern state. Using a psychoeducational group format, 20 immigrant Mexican women participated in two 11-week groups over a 9-month period at a community-based health clinic. Findings indicated immigrant Mexican women examined current relationships, dating, and domestic violence dynamics in group settings and reported changes in self-esteem within their own culture. Implications for social workers include learning how they can use culturally competent curriculums and programs in group formats.     

Group Work for People Touched by HIV/AIDS Yesterday and Today

This article recounts the experience of a support group in the early days of the AIDS pandemic. After identifying the personal, interpersonal, and environmental issues that were part of the work of this early support group, the article reflects on how far we have come in addressing people's needs around HIV/AIDS. The importance of group work in working at personal and political levels is highlighted.

During the past decade, alcoholism treatment services in the United States have experienced unprecedented growth. The federal and local governments and the general public have become increasingly aware of the devastating impact of alcohol abuse and alcoholism on people's health and welfare and on the overall economy. As a result of this growing awareness, diversified alcoholism services are now available in communities throughout the country. Despite this preponderance of treatment, there is at least one segment of the alcoholic population which has been virtually unserved. This is the deaf alcoholic. This paper will describe an innovative program of alcoholism treatment for the deaf.

This article describes two convergent group programs for children in care that aimed to develop resilience. Both preventative-type programs reflected the current focus on strengths-based approaches and resilience within child protection/welfare. They used arts-based and experiential methods to facilitate the learning of a variety of skills including social and coping skills, mindfulness, and emotional awareness. The programs were suitable and feasible and appeared to have benefits, could accommodate diversity, were cost effective, and could be facilitated by a wide variety of practitioners. Too many children in care are falling between the cracks. Communities should consider how relevant and meaningful services can feasibly be offered to children in care.
