A comprehensive review of the literature on dropout revealed 37 studies involving group treatment. Although these studies represent less than 10% of the work done on premature termination, the problem of dropout is just as prevalent in group work as it is in any other form of treatment. The purpose of this paper is to (1) review the empirical evidence on group treatment dropout, (2) suggest directions for future research, and (3) set forth guidelines which may help practitioners decrease the likelihood of dropout.  相似文献

Summary Focus groups, originally used in fields such as marketing andconsumer research, are rapidly gaining popularity as a researchmethodology in the social sciences. It is interesting to notethat most of the scholarly work on focus groups continues tocome from business rather than the social sciences. Few researchershave discussed the differing purposes and goals in social scienceand consumer research (Ospina, 1994; Moore, 1996). Furthermore, the literature on focus group research rarely utilizes socialwork knowledge of group dynamics or group facilitation skills.Rather, the literature on focus groups tends to give guidelinesfor leading groups, telling focus group facilitators what todo and what not to do in leading such groups. We believe thatthese guidelines, while generally helpful, can lead to rigidityon the part of focus group leaders. We suggest that, in socialwork research, focus group facilitators should use their knowledgeof group dynamics and the values of individualization and empathyto modify focus group rules where appropriate. This paper describes part of a qualitative study of client/workerrelationships in residential mental health settings. Duringthe course of this research, group work principles came intoconflict, at times, with recommended guidelines for focus groupleaders. The paper illustrates how insights gleaned from groupwork theory and practice can enable a researcher to break focusgroup rules responsibly, thus bringing greater depth to thedata gathered and allowing the researcher to be more sensitiveto the needs of focus group participants.  相似文献

This study examined the patterns and correlates of the types of maltreatment experienced by adolescents aged 9–12, participating in an ongoing longitudinal study on the impact of neglect on children's development. Using case record abstraction, the study compared the child protection classification and findings from the case record abstraction with regard to the rates of four types of maltreatment (i.e. physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect) as well as co‐occurrence across multiple types of maltreatment. Next, the study examined the frequently observed patterns of child maltreatment. Finally, the study investigated whether aspects of caretaker functioning and the detailed incident characteristics in the cases of neglect differed by the number of different types of maltreatment the children experienced. Results showed significant discrepancies between the Child Protective Service classification and case record abstraction. Child Protective Service classification considerably underestimated the rate of co‐occurrence across multiple types of maltreatment. Neglect accompanied by physical and emotional abuse was the most common form. Some of the caretaker functioning variables distinguished the number of types of maltreatment. Based on the findings, future‐research directions and practice implication were discussed.  相似文献

In this article, the authors report on a qualitative study that explored the use of narrative therapy with a diverse group of older adults dealing with mental health and substance misuse issues. Narrative therapy supports individuals to critically assess their lives and develop alternative and empowering life stories that aim to keep the problem in its place. Although the literature suggests this is a promising intervention for individuals, there is a lack of research on narrative therapy and group work. Aiming to address this gap, the authors developed and researched a narrative therapy group for older adults coping with mental health and substance misuse issues in Toronto, Canada. Taking an ethnographic approach, field notes and interviews provided rich data on how, when, and for whom, such a group could be beneficial. Findings contribute to the literature on group work, older adults, and narrative therapy.  相似文献

Family practice is a special case of social work with groups. This practice especially requires an ethnic and multicultural perspective. Such a framework is presented in this paper with focus on group work with families in Singapore. Singapore is an economically developed East Asian nation populated predominately by three ethnic groups: Chinese, Malay, and Indian. These groups have experienced a wider culture in transition, affecting their family group culture. Through use of the sensitizing conceptual frameworks of family cultural reality and value orientation theory, this paper presents a multicultural perspective and applies it to group work with families in Singapore. The framework used is deemed applicable to practice with the family and other small groups in similar multicultural contexts wherein members experience the effects of swift social change.  相似文献

This paper examines a particular residential group within a correctional treatment institution. The examination focuses on the family-likeness of this group. The concept of family-like as it exists in the literature is described and the features of family-likeness in the group under discussion are outlined. A comparison is made to other residential groups as well as to other groups described as family-like.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Suicide is the third leading cause of death in adolescents in the United States-following accidents and homicide. This paper reports on group based activities using a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) framework targeted at variables most highly correlated with suicidal ideation and behaviors, including problems associated with self-esteem, cognitive rigidity, social skills deficits, and substance use. Instead of focusing exclusively on treatment of depressive symptoms, this paper presents a series of structured group activities applicable to time-limited groups and designed to increase self-esteem, reduce negative thinking, enhance coping abilities, delimit substance use, and reintroduce the ability to seek and enjoy pleasurable activities with peers. The activities are derived from experiences with adolescents in treatment and are devised to foster rapid group stage development for use in time-limited groups.  相似文献

This paper sets out to demonstrate how to conduct a mutual aid based group role play, and to establish its effectiveness as an educational tool. Information is presented on mutual aid and role play processes; the integration of these form the mutual aid based group role play. Supporting data represent information from eighty-seven social work students in six groups, who participated in eighteen mutual aid based group role plays. This data highlights different aspects of mutual aid based group role plays.  相似文献

This article presents the development of a group program for women who use violence. A review of the North American literature and research into Quebec practices led the authors to adopt an intersectional feminist analysis of women’s violence and to choose the mutual aid group model. The program’s main objective is to help women find alternatives to the use of violence by working on three main themes: (1) violence, (2) socialization, and (3) life conditions. The program also aims to increase women’s empowerment through concrete experiences of group solidarity, such as by helping one another. Challenges that were encountered in its development and that are anticipated in its evaluation are discussed.  相似文献

Social group work education appears to be in trouble. The literature details a progressive disintegration of group work educational opportunities while highlighting an incremental increase in the use of groups in agencies. This makes for a concerning scenario. This article presents data from a national study of 1,360 first-year MSW students. The current study explored the extent to which students are exposed to group work content and knowledge in foundation classes. A discussion of implications and recommendations, using case vignettes, are provided to illustrate and amplify findings, as well as to highlight challenges that lie ahead for group work education and practice.  相似文献

This paper focuses on social group work practice with adult community groups, highlighting the importance of these groups to the achievement of increased citizen participation in current social concerns, and identifying characteristics of these groups which require some different conceptualizations of social group work practice. This paper characterizes our current social context as deficient in the necessary social arrangements for a just and humane society. Thus it argues for a major shift of professional skill to assisting adult community groups to deal with environmental deficiencies, whether these be social policy, resource allocation, or program administration. It suggests that many problems which are identified as "personal inadequacy" may, in fact result from environmental deficiencies, and may be better served through the active efforts of citizens in their own behalf. The paper assumes an interaction between person, group and context, and posits that more effective use is made of professional knowledge and skill through work with those groups which seek to address the environmental context of human affairs.  相似文献

Summary The past decade has witnessed a move towards increased communityresidential care for the mentally handicapped, essentially involvingan expansion of hostels and group homes. The latter has beenviewed as a serious alternative only for the more able members:those sufficient in a modicum of independence and behaviouralskills. The present paper explores the importance of group interactionaldynamics within the framework of providing residential carein ordinary houses for groups of up to five mentally handicappedadults. The use of group theory perspectives concentrates onthe potential of individuals to achieve effective social skillsthat contribute to adequate group harmony. The findings illustratethe potential of meeting the needs of the less able within grouphome settings through an emphasis on assessment of total groupneeds rather than on an aggregate of individuals comprisingthe group. These are discussed within the contest of currentefforts both at policy and provider level to expand care withinthe community.  相似文献

Although security of attachment is conceptualised as a balance between infants' attachment and exploratory behaviours, parental behaviours pertaining to infant exploration have received relatively little empirical attention. Drawing from self‐determination theory, this study seeks to improve the prediction of infant attachment by assessing maternal autonomy‐support during infant exploration, in addition to maternal sensitivity. Seventy‐one dyads participated in two home visits. Maternal sensitivity was assessed when the infants were 12 months old, whereas maternal autonomy‐support and infant attachment were assessed at 15 months. The results revealed that autonomy‐support explained an additional portion of the variance in attachment when maternal socioeconomic status and sensitivity were controlled. These results speak to the relevance of a theory‐driven approach to examining maternal behaviours in the context of child exploration.  相似文献

Low-income Black youths face problems which negatively impact on their self-concepts and educational achievement. Without an education, the opportunities for social mobility for them are severely decreased. The small group is suggested as a medium of intervention in the public schools by which large numbers of low-income Black youths can be reached and assisted with problems which interfere with their cducation. This paper discusses group work with this population, the theoretical framework utilized, and the applicability of some of the insights gained from working with this population to group work wilh Blacks in general.  相似文献

This article describes a research study which evaluated a group service for men who batter. Change was evaluated both by self report and as interpreted from the Hemler Scale of Social Functioning. It was demonstrated that male batterers who entered into the group treatment process showed significant change with respect to human social functioning and in the cessation of physical violence towards their partners. Although the personal journey along which a batterer takes responsibility for his actions and finds appropriate coping mechanisms is intensely individual, this study adds to the literature which confirms that a supportive group experience can facilitate this process.  相似文献

The relationship between body image satisfaction and depression was investigated with a group of adolescent and preadolescent males and females. A total of 382 participants constituted the sample, 194 fourth graders from two suburban elementary schools, and 187 eighth graders from one suburban middle school. Through the use of four measurement scales: the Body Esteem Scale, the Body Dissatisfaction Scale, the Depression Self‐Rating Scale, and the Short Acculturation Scale, this study confirmed what has been reported in the literature about adolescent females, that as a group, they exhibit greater body dissatisfaction than adolescent males and preadolescents of both genders. However, this study also supported evidence for the contention that adolescent males and preadolescents of both genders are not immune to experiencing body dissatisfaction. Through the use of body image measures and the depression measure, results from this study also demonstrated that the relationship between body image and symptoms of depression works the same way for adolescents as it does for preadolescents. The more satisfied one is with one's body, the fewer symptoms of depression. Because the majority of participants scored high on level of acculturation, one can assume that level of acculturation did not serve as a mediating variable between satisfaction and symptoms of depression. Therefore, increases in symptoms of depression among participants are likely due to feelings associated with a negative body image rather than to issues pertaining to acculturation.  相似文献

Abstract

A weekly inpatient group for preadolescent children who have been sexually abused and/or sexually abusive provides insights into the convergences of victimization and victimizing. Based on clinical experience and a review of pertinent literature, it is hypothesized that shame forms a crucial affective bridge by which the transition from victim to victimizer occurs. The group fosters exploration of this transition, viewing it as an attempt to master, or annihilate, the initial pain of exploitation. Examination of feeling states that underlie early traumatic experience illustrates the defensive transformations that translate the painful affects of victimization into victimizing behaviors. The group provides a suitably shame‐reducing clinical context for this process.  相似文献

Group reward structures have been found to provide social workers with effective procedures for sustaining changes made by group members. This paper provides a review of the literature on reward structures in an effort to determine which work best with clients in sustaining changes they make in a group context. The pros and cons of individual and group reward structures are discussed and six principles to increase success are identified: (1) appropriate behavior must be reinforced; (2) reinforcers must be available to all members, but not too easily available; (3) reinforcers should be delivered close in time to the occurrence of Lhe behavior they reinforce; (4) reinforcers must be consistent in their application; (5) reinforcers must be appropriate to the chosen behavioral change; and (6) there must be a pattern of consistent reinforcement by significant others in a person's environment.  相似文献

It is common for social work researchers to use the individual as the unit of analysis in small group research. This paper examines the discrepancies that may exist between analyses that incorporate the individual and those that incorpo- rate the group as the unit of analysis. An example is presented with data collected from 331 members of 53 workgroups in 22 different human service organizations. Researchers are cau- tioned against drawing conclusions about groups from data based on the individual as the unit of analysis.  相似文献

Founded on an evaluative review of core group practice in a northern metropolitan borough of England, this paper highlights the tensions and difficulties that might inhibit the quality of post‐registration services to children and their families. Insights from the empirical data as well as theoretical literature have been explored in the light of current and developing policies. This exploration is focused on inter‐agency coordination; inter‐professional relationships; and partnership with parents and children. The recruitment and retention of social workers, the potential contribution of Children's Trusts, as well as unconscious processes relating to child abuse and child protection, are all given consideration.  相似文献
