The choice of the bandwidth is a crucial issue for kernel density estimation. Among all the data-dependent methods for choosing the bandwidth, the direct plug-in method has shown a particularly good performance in practice. This procedure is based on estimating an asymptotic approximation of the optimal bandwidth, using two “pilot” kernel estimation stages. Although two pilot stages seem to be enough for most densities, for a long time the problem of how to choose an appropriate number of stages has remained open. Here we propose an automatic (i.e., data-based) method for choosing the number of stages to be employed in the plug-in bandwidth selector. Asymptotic properties of the method are presented and an extensive simulation study is carried out to compare its small-sample performance with that of the most recommended bandwidth selectors in the literature.  相似文献

Abstract

In this work, we propose beta prime kernel estimator for estimation of a probability density functions defined with nonnegative support. For the proposed estimator, beta prime probability density function used as a kernel. It is free of boundary bias and nonnegative with a natural varying shape. We obtained the optimal rate of convergence for the mean squared error (MSE) and the mean integrated squared error (MISE). Also, we use adaptive Bayesian bandwidth selection method with Lindley approximation for heavy tailed distributions and compare its performance with the global least squares cross-validation bandwidth selection method. Simulation studies are performed to evaluate the average integrated squared error (ISE) of the proposed kernel estimator against some asymmetric competitors using Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, real data sets are presented to illustrate the findings.  相似文献

In non-parametric function estimation selection of a smoothing parameter is one of the most important issues. The performance of smoothing techniques depends highly on the choice of this parameter. Preferably the bandwidth should be determined via a data-driven procedure. In this paper we consider kernel estimators in a white noise model, and investigate whether locally adaptive plug-in bandwidths can achieve optimal global rates of convergence. We consider various classes of functions: Sobolev classes, bounded variation function classes, classes of convex functions and classes of monotone functions. We study the situations of pilot estimation with oversmoothing and without oversmoothing. Our main finding is that simple local plug-in bandwidth selectors can adapt to spatial inhomogeneity of the regression function as long as there are no local oscillations of high frequency. We establish the pointwise asymptotic distribution of the regression estimator with local plug-in bandwidth.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a family of robust estimates for isotonic regression: isotonic M-estimators. We show that their asymptotic distribution is, up to an scalar factor, the same as that of Brunk's classical isotonic estimator. We also derive the influence function and the breakdown point of these estimates. Finally we perform a Monte Carlo study that shows that the proposed family includes estimators that are simultaneously highly efficient under Gaussian errors and highly robust when the error distribution has heavy tails.  相似文献

Likelihood cross-validation for kernel density estimation is known to be sensitive to extreme observations and heavy-tailed distributions. We propose a robust likelihood-based cross-validation method to select bandwidths in multivariate density estimations. We derive this bandwidth selector within the framework of robust maximum likelihood estimation. This method establishes a smooth transition from likelihood cross-validation for nonextreme observations to least squares cross-validation for extreme observations, thereby combining the efficiency of likelihood cross-validation and the robustness of least-squares cross-validation. We also suggest a simple rule to select the transition threshold. We demonstrate the finite sample performance and practical usefulness of the proposed method via Monte Carlo simulations and a real data application on Chinese air pollution.  相似文献

Consider a regression model where the regression function is the sum of a linear and a nonparametric component. Assuming that the errors of the model follow a stationary strong mixing process with mean zero, the problem of bandwidth selection for a kernel estimator of the nonparametric component is addressed here. We obtain an asymptotic expression for an optimal band-width and we propose to use a plug-in methodology in order to estimate this bandwidth through preliminary estimates of the unknown quantities. Asymptotic optimality for the plug-in bandwidth is established.  相似文献

We propose a corrected plug-in method for constructing confidence intervals of the conditional quantiles of an original response variable through a transformed regression with heteroscedastic errors. The interval is easy to compute. Factors affecting the magnitude of the correction are examined analytically through the special case of Box–Cox regression. Monte Carlo simulations show that the new method works well in general and is superior over the commonly used delta method and the quantile regression method. An empirical application is presented.  相似文献

Bandwidth plays an important role in determining the performance of nonparametric estimators, such as the local constant estimator. In this article, we propose a Bayesian approach to bandwidth estimation for local constant estimators of time-varying coefficients in time series models. We establish a large sample theory for the proposed bandwidth estimator and Bayesian estimators of the unknown parameters involved in the error density. A Monte Carlo simulation study shows that (i) the proposed Bayesian estimators for bandwidth and parameters in the error density have satisfactory finite sample performance; and (ii) our proposed Bayesian approach achieves better performance in estimating the bandwidths than the normal reference rule and cross-validation. Moreover, we apply our proposed Bayesian bandwidth estimation method for the time-varying coefficient models that explain Okun’s law and the relationship between consumption growth and income growth in the U.S. For each model, we also provide calibrated parametric forms of the time-varying coefficients. Summary.  The expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm is a popular tool for maximizing likelihood functions in the presence of missing data. Unfortunately, EM often requires the evaluation of analytically intractable and high dimensional integrals. The Monte Carlo EM (MCEM) algorithm is the natural extension of EM that employs Monte Carlo methods to estimate the relevant integrals. Typically, a very large Monte Carlo sample size is required to estimate these integrals within an acceptable tolerance when the algorithm is near convergence. Even if this sample size were known at the onset of implementation of MCEM, its use throughout all iterations is wasteful, especially when accurate starting values are not available. We propose a data-driven strategy for controlling Monte Carlo resources in MCEM. The algorithm proposed improves on similar existing methods by recovering EM's ascent (i.e. likelihood increasing) property with high probability, being more robust to the effect of user-defined inputs and handling classical Monte Carlo and Markov chain Monte Carlo methods within a common framework. Because of the first of these properties we refer to the algorithm as 'ascent-based MCEM'. We apply ascent-based MCEM to a variety of examples, including one where it is used to accelerate the convergence of deterministic EM dramatically.  相似文献

Synthetic likelihood is an attractive approach to likelihood-free inference when an approximately Gaussian summary statistic for the data, informative for inference about the parameters, is available. The synthetic likelihood method derives an approximate likelihood function from a plug-in normal density estimate for the summary statistic, with plug-in mean and covariance matrix obtained by Monte Carlo simulation from the model. In this article, we develop alternatives to Markov chain Monte Carlo implementations of Bayesian synthetic likelihoods with reduced computational overheads. Our approach uses stochastic gradient variational inference methods for posterior approximation in the synthetic likelihood context, employing unbiased estimates of the log likelihood. We compare the new method with a related likelihood-free variational inference technique in the literature, while at the same time improving the implementation of that approach in a number of ways. These new algorithms are feasible to implement in situations which are challenging for conventional approximate Bayesian computation methods, in terms of the dimensionality of the parameter and summary statistic.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the performance of the most popular bootstrap schemes for multilevel data. Also, we propose a modified version of the wild bootstrap procedure for hierarchical data structures. The wild bootstrap does not require homoscedasticity or assumptions on the distribution of the error processes. Hence, it is a valuable tool for robust inference in a multilevel framework. We assess the finite size performances of the schemes through a Monte Carlo study. The results show that for big sample sizes it always pays off to adopt an agnostic approach as the wild bootstrap outperforms other techniques.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a robust test of exogeneity. The test statistics is constructed from quantile regression estimators, which are robust to heavy tails of errors. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis of exogeneity at a given quantile. The finite sample properties of the test are investigated through Monte Carlo simulations that exhibit not only good size and power properties, but also good robustness to outliers.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a generalized linear model and estimate the unknown parameters using robust M-estimator. Under suitable conditions and by the strong law of large numbers and central limits theorem, the proposed M-estimators are proved to be consistent and asymptotically normal. We also evaluate the finite sample performance of our estimator through a Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

This paper investigates the new prior distribution on the Unobserved-Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARCH) unit root test. Monte Carlo simulations show that the sample size is seriously effective in efficiency of Bayesian test. To improve the performance of Bayesian test for unit root, we propose a new Bayesian test that is robust in the presence of stationary and nonstationary Unobserved-ARCH. The finite sample property of the proposed test statistic is evaluated using Monte Carlo studies. Applying the developed method, we test the policy of daily exchange rate of the German Marc with respect to the Greek Drachma.  相似文献

In this article, we propose an efficient and robust estimation for the semiparametric mixture model that is a mixture of unknown location-shifted symmetric distributions. Our estimation is derived by minimizing the profile Hellinger distance (MPHD) between the model and a nonparametric density estimate. We propose a simple and efficient algorithm to find the proposed MPHD estimation. Monte Carlo simulation study is conducted to examine the finite sample performance of the proposed procedure and to compare it with other existing methods. Based on our empirical studies, the newly proposed procedure works very competitively compared to the existing methods for normal component cases and much better for non-normal component cases. More importantly, the proposed procedure is robust when the data are contaminated with outlying observations. A real data application is also provided to illustrate the proposed estimation procedure.  相似文献

We propose a robust likelihood approach for the Birnbaum–Saunders regression model under model misspecification, which provides full likelihood inferences about regression parameters without knowing the true random mechanisms underlying the data. Monte Carlo simulation experiments and analysis of real data sets are carried out to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed robust methodology.  相似文献

The article proposes a simulation-based inferential method for simultaneous processes defined on a regular lattice. The focus is on spatio-temporal processes with a simultaneous component, that is such that contemporaneous spatial neighbors are potential explanatory variables in the model. The new method has the advantage of being simpler to implement than maximum likelihood and allows us to propose a robust estimator. We give asymptotic properties, present a Monte Carlo study and an illustrative example.  相似文献

We propose four different GMM estimators that allow almost consistent estimation of the structural parameters of panel probit models with fixed effects for the case of small Tand large N. The moments used are derived for each period from a first order approximation of the mean of the dependent variable conditional on explanatory variables and on the fixed effect. The estimators differ w.r.t. the choice of instruments and whether they use trimming to reduce the bias or not. In a Monte Carlo study, we compare these estimators with pooled probit and conditional logit estimators for different data generating processes. The results show that the proposed estimators outperform these competitors in several situations.  相似文献

Summary. We propose a kernel estimator of integrated squared density derivatives, from a sample that has been contaminated by random noise. We derive asymptotic expressions for the bias and the variance of the estimator and show that the squared bias term dominates the variance term. This coincides with results that are available for non-contaminated observations. We then discuss the selection of the bandwidth parameter when estimating integrated squared density derivatives based on contaminated data. We propose a data-driven bandwidth selection procedure of the plug-in type and investigate its finite sample performance via a simulation study.  相似文献

This paper investigates the focused information criterion and plug-in average for vector autoregressive models with local-to-zero misspecification. These methods have the advantage of focusing on a quantity of interest rather than aiming at overall model fit. Any (su?ciently regular) function of the parameters can be used as a quantity of interest. We determine the asymptotic properties and elaborate on the role of the locally misspecified parameters. In particular, we show that the inability to consistently estimate locally misspecified parameters translates into suboptimal selection and averaging. We apply this framework to impulse response analysis. A Monte Carlo simulation study supports our claims.  相似文献
