Tsallis entropy is a generalized form of entropy and tends to be Shannon entropy when q → 1. Using Tsallis entropy, an alternative estimation methodology (generalized maximum Tsallis entropy) is introduced and used to estimate the parameters in a linear regression model when the basic data are ill-conditioned. We describe the generalized maximum Tsallis entropy and for q = 2 we call that GMET2 estimator. We apply the GMET2 estimator for estimating the linear regression model Y = Xβ + e where the design matrix X is subject to severe multicollinearity. We compared the GMET2, generalized maximum entropy (GME), ordinary least-square (OLS), and inequality restricted least-square (IRLS) estimators on the analyzed dataset on Portland cement.  相似文献

In this article, the Ridge–GME parameter estimator, which combines Ridge Regression and Generalized Maximum Entropy, is improved in order to eliminate the subjectivity in the analysis of the ridge trace. A serious concern with the visual inspection of the ridge trace to define the supports for the parameters in the Ridge–GME parameter estimator is the misinterpretation of some ridge traces, in particular where some of them are very close to the axes. A simulation study and two empirical applications are used to illustrate the performance of the improved estimator. A MATLAB code is provided as supplementary material.  相似文献

Double censoring often occurs in registry studies when left censoring is present in addition to right censoring. In this work, we examine estimation of Aalen's nonparametric regression coefficients based on doubly censored data. We propose two estimation techniques. The first type of estimators, including ordinary least squared (OLS) estimator and weighted least squared (WLS) estimators, are obtained using martingale arguments. The second type of estimator, the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), is obtained via expectation-maximization (EM) algorithms that treat the survival times of left censored observations as missing. Asymptotic properties, including the uniform consistency and weak convergence, are established for the MLE. Simulation results demonstrate that the MLE is more efficient than the OLS and WLS estimators.  相似文献

We propose a new robust regression estimator using data partition technique and M estimation (DPM). The data partition technique is designed to define a small fixed number of subsets of the partitioned data set and to produce corresponding ordinary least square (OLS) fits in each subset, contrary to the resampling technique of existing robust estimators such as the least trimmed squares estimator. The proposed estimator shares a common strategy with the median ball algorithm estimator that is obtained from the OLS trial fits only on a fixed number of subsets of the data. We examine performance of the DPM estimator in the eleven challenging data sets and simulation studies. We also compare the DPM with the five commonly used robust estimators using empirical convergence rates relative to the OLS for clean data, robustness through mean squared error and bias, masking and swamping probabilities, the ability of detecting the known outliers, and the regression and affine equivariances.  相似文献

This paper presents a procedure utilizing the generalized maximum entropy (GME) estimation method in two steps to quantify the uncertainty of the simple linear structural measurement error model parameters exactly. The first step estimates the unknowns from the horizontal line, and then the estimates were used in a second step to estimate the unknowns from the vertical line. The proposed estimation procedure has the ability to minimize the number of unknown parameters in formulating the GME system within each step, and hence reduce variability of the estimates. Analytical and illustrative Monte Carlo simulation comparison experiments with the maximum likelihood estimators and a one-step GME estimation procedure were presented. Simulation experiments demonstrated that the two steps estimation procedure produced parameter estimates that are more accurate and more efficient than the classical estimation methods. An application of the proposed method is illustrated using a data set gathered from the Centre for Integrated Government Services in Delma Island – UAE to predict the association between perceived quality and the customer satisfaction.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to study the effect of management factors on enterprise performance, considering a survey that the University Consortium in Engineering for Quality and Innovation has led. The relationships between management factors and enterprise performance are formalized by a Simultaneous Equation Model based on the generalized maximum entropy (GME) estimation method. The format of this paper is as follows. In Section 2, the data collected, the questionnaire evaluation, and the management model analytical formulation are introduced. In Section 3, the GME formulation is specified, showing the main characteristics of the estimation method. In Section 4, the results and a comparison among GME, partial least squares (PLS), and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is shown. In Section 5, concluding remarks are discussed.  相似文献

Small area estimation techniques are becoming increasingly used in survey applications to provide estimates for local areas of interest. The objective of this article is to develop and apply Information Theoretic (IT)-based formulations to estimate small area business and trade statistics. More specifically, we propose a Generalized Maximum Entropy (GME) approach to the problem of small area estimation that exploits auxiliary information relating to other known variables on the population and adjusts for consistency and additivity. The GME formulations, combining information from the sample together with out-of-sample aggregates of the population of interest, can be particularly useful in the context of small area estimation, for both direct and model-based estimators, since they do not require strong distributional assumptions on the disturbances. The performance of the proposed IT formulations is illustrated through real and simulated datasets.  相似文献

For the simple linear functional relationship model with replication, the asymptotic properties of the ordinary (OLS) and grouping least squares (GRLS) estimator of the slope are investi- gated under the assumption of normally distributed errors with unknown covariance matrix. The relative performance of the OLS and GRLS estimator is compared in terms of the asymptotic mean square error, and a set of critical parameters are identified for determining the dominance of one estimator over the other. It is also shown that the GRLS estimator is asymptoticallyequivalent to the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator under the given assumptions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, assuming that there exist omitted variables in the specified model, we analytically derive the exact formula for the mean squared error (MSE) of a heterogeneous pre-test (HPT) estimator whose components are the ordinary least squares (OLS) and feasible ridge regression (FRR) estimators. Since we cannot examine the MSE performance analytically, we execute numerical evaluations to investigate small sample properties of the HPT estimator, and compare the MSE performance of the HPT estimator with those of the FRR estimator and the usual OLS estimator. Our numerical results show that (1) the HPT estimator is more efficient when the model misspecification is severe; (2) the HPT estimator with the optimal critical value obtained under the correctly specified model can be safely used even when there exist omitted variables in the specified model.  相似文献

The classical growth curve model is considered when one continuous characteristic is measured at q time points. The covariance adjusted estimator of growth curve parameters is the OLS estimator adjusted using analysis of covariance. The covariates are obtained from functions of within individuals error contrasts. On the other hand, REML estimators emerge from maximization of the likelihood of OLS residuals. We compare the efficiency of estimators of growth curve parameters obtained by REML with that of covariance-adjusted least squares estimators with covariates selected via CAIC.  相似文献

Bentham (1789 Bentham, J. (1789). Utilitarianism, reproduced by Nabu Public Domain Reprints. Available at: http://www.publicdomainreprints.org. [Google Scholar]) introduced utility as the pursuit of happiness, with happiness defined in his philosophical view as existing if “pleasure” predominated over “pain.” This paper is the first to derive and compare the relative frequency distributions of income and utility in Bentham's classical sense. A utility-based Gini coefficient is formulated from a utility distribution derived from the better known income distribution. A utility-based Lorenz curve is defined as the accumulated sum of pain and pleasure, as Bentham defined them. A utility-based polarization index is created as the ratio of accumulated pain to accumulated pleasure. If raw income data are unavailable, an income distribution can still be estimated from a summary inequality statistic such as the Gini coefficient using the maximum entropy method. In this study, a measure of true income inequality, utility inequality, and the “pain” suffered by the poorest group are quantified and estimated using National Tax Service data from Korea.  相似文献

A new general method of combining estimators is proposed in order to obtain an estimator with “improved” small sample properties. It is based on a specification test statistic and incorporates some well-known methods like preliminary testing. It is used to derive an alternative estimator for the slope in the simple errors-in-variables model, combining OLS and the modified instrumental variable estimator by Fuller. Small sample properties of the new estimator are investigated by means of a Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

In this paper, we examine the risk performance of the generalized ridge regression (GRR) and feasible GRR estimators when the LINEX loss function is used. A sufficient condition for the GRR estimator to dominate the OLS estimator is shown, and the risk functions of the feasible GRR estimator and the OLS estimator are numerically compared.  相似文献

In a regression model with proxy variables, we consider the iterative estimator of the disturbance variance to obtain more precise estimates. In the formula of the estimator of the disturbance variance, the estimator is obtained by using Stein-rule (SR) estimator instead of OLS (ordinary least squares) estimator is called Iterative estimator of the disturbance variance. It is shown that, in a regression model with proxy variables the mean square error (MSE) of the iterative estimator of the disturbance variance is greater than the MSE of the disturbance variance related to the OLS estimator under certain conditions.  相似文献

In this paper, we analytically derive the exact formula for the mean squared error (MSE) of two weighted average (WA) estimators for each individual regression coefficient. Further, we execute numerical evaluations to investigate small sample properties of the WA estimators, and compare the MSE performance of the WA estimators with the other shrinkage estimators and the usual OLS estimator. Our numerical results show that (1) the WA estimators have smaller MSE than the other shrinkage estimators and the OLS estimator over a wide region of parameter space; (2) the range where the relative MSE of the WA estimator is smaller than that of the OLS estimator gets narrower as the number of explanatory variables k increases.  相似文献

We consider an unbiased estimator of a function of mean value parameters, which is not efficient. This inefficient estimator is correlated with a residual vector. Thus, if a unit dispersion is unknown, it is impossible to determine the correct confidence region for a function of mean value parameters via a standard estimator of an unknown dispersion with the exception of the case when the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator is considered in a model with a special covariance structure such that the OLS and the generalized least squares (GLS) estimator are the same, that is the OLS estimator is efficient. Two different estimators of a unit dispersion independent of an inefficient estimator are derived in a singular linear statistical model. Their quality was verified by simulations for several types of experimental designs. Two new estimators of the unit dispersion were compared with the standard estimators based on the GLS and the OLS estimators of the function of the mean value parameters. The OLS estimator was considered in the incorrect model with a different covariance matrix such that the originally inefficient estimator became efficient. The numerical examples led to a slightly surprising result which seems to be due to data behaviour. An example from geodetic practice is presented in the paper.  相似文献

The GMANOVA model is considered when one characteristic is measured at q time points. The covariance adjusted estimator is the OLS estimator adjusted using analysis of covariance. The covariates are obtained from the space vertical to that derived from the design matrix. Its form is obtained as a GLS estimator using a weight matrix of reduced rank unless all available covariates are used. The choice of the appropriate covariate combination is made by introducing a method based on cross validation (CV). A comparison is made with two other methods that appeared in statistical literature using simulation.  相似文献

This paper deals with the problem of multicollinearity in a multiple linear regression model with linear equality restrictions. The restricted two parameter estimator which was proposed in case of multicollinearity satisfies the restrictions. The performance of the restricted two parameter estimator over the restricted least squares (RLS) estimator and the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator is examined under the mean square error (MSE) matrix criterion when the restrictions are correct and not correct. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the restricted ridge regression, restricted Liu and restricted shrunken estimators, which are the special cases of the restricted two parameter estimator, to have a smaller MSE matrix than the RLS and the OLS estimators are derived when the restrictions hold true and do not hold true. Theoretical results are illustrated with numerical examples based on Webster, Gunst and Mason data and Gorman and Toman data. We conduct a final demonstration of the performance of the estimators by running a Monte Carlo simulation which shows that when the variance of the error term and the correlation between the explanatory variables are large, the restricted two parameter estimator performs better than the RLS estimator and the OLS estimator under the configurations examined.  相似文献

Numerous estimation techniques for regression models have been proposed. These procedures differ in how sample information is used in the estimation procedure. The efficiency of least squares (OLS) estimators implicity assumes normally distributed residuals and is very sensitive to departures from normality, particularly to "outliers" and thick-tailed distributions. Lead absolute deviation (LAD) estimators are less sensitive to outliers and are optimal for laplace random disturbances, but not for normal errors. This paper reports monte carlo comparisons of OLS,LAD, two robust estimators discussed by huber, three partially adaptiveestimators, newey's generalized method of moments estimator, and an adaptive maximum likelihood estimator based on a normal kernal studied by manski. This paper is the first to compare the relative performance of some adaptive robust estimators (partially adaptive and adaptive procedures) with some common nonadaptive robust estimators. The partially adaptive estimators are based on three flxible parametric distributions for the errors. These include the power exponential (Box-Tiao) and generalized t distributions, as well as a distribution for the errors, which is not necessarily symmetric. The adaptive procedures are "fully iterative" rather than one step estimators. The adaptive estimators have desirable large sample properties, but these properties do not necessarily carry over to the small sample case.

The monte carlo comparisons of the alternative estimators are based on four different specifications for the error distribution: a normal, a mixture of normals (or variance-contaminated normal), a bimodal mixture of normals, and a lognormal. Five hundred samples of 50 are used. The adaptive and partially adaptive estimators perform very well relative to the other estimation procedures considered, and preliminary results suggest that in some important cases they can perform much better than OLS with 50 to 80% reductions in standard errors.
