A smoothing procedure for discrete time failure data is proposed which allows for the inclusion of covariates. This purely nonparametric method is based on discrete or continuous kernel smoothing techniques that gives a compromise between the data and smoothness. The method may be used as an exploratory tool to uncover the underlying structure or as an alternative to parametric methods when prediction is the primary objective. Confidence intervals are considered and alternative techniques of cross validation based choices of smoothing parameters are investigated.  相似文献

This work deals with semiparametric kernel estimator of probability mass functions which are assumed to be modified Poisson distributions. This semiparametric approach is based on discrete associated kernel method appropriated for modelling count data; in particular, the famous discrete symmetric triangular kernels are used. Two data-driven bandwidth selection procedures are investigated and an explicit expression of optimal bandwidth not available until now is provided. Moreover, some asymptotic properties of the cross-validation criterion adapted for discrete semiparametric kernel estimation are studied. Finally, to measure the performance of semiparametric estimator according to each type of bandwidth parameter, some applications are realized on three real count data-sets from sociology and biology.  相似文献

A criterion for choosing an estimator in a family of semi-parametric estimators from incomplete data is proposed. This criterion is the expected observed log-likelihood (ELL). Adapted versions of this criterion in case of censored data and in presence of explanatory variables are exhibited. We show that likelihood cross-validation (LCV) is an estimator of ELL and we exhibit three bootstrap estimators. A simulation study considering both families of kernel and penalized likelihood estimators of the hazard function (indexed on a smoothing parameter) demonstrates good results of LCV and a bootstrap estimator called ELLbboot . We apply the ELLbboot criterion to compare the kernel and penalized likelihood estimators to estimate the risk of developing dementia for women using data from a large cohort study.  相似文献

In this paper we use bootstrap methodology to achieve accurate estimated prediction intervals for recovery rates. In the framework of the LossCalc model, which is the Moody's KMV model to predict loss given default, a single beta distribution is usually assumed to model the behaviour of recovery rates and, hence, to construct prediction intervals. We evaluate the coverage properties of beta estimated prediction intervals for multimodal recovery rates. We carry out a simulation study, and our results show that bootstrap versions of beta mixture prediction intervals exhibit the best coverage properties.  相似文献

In this paper we present a simulation study for comparing differents methods for estimating the prediction error rate in a discrimination problem. We consider the Cross-validation, Bootstrap and Bayesian Bootstrap methods for such as problem, while also elaborating on both simple and Bayesian Bootstrap methods by smoothing techniques. We observe as the smoothing procedure lead to improvements in the estimation of the true error rate of the discrimination rule, specially in the case of the smooth Bayesian Bootstrap estimator, whose reduction in M.S.E. resulted from the high positive correlation between the true error rate and its estimations based in this method.  相似文献

The Bootstrap and Kriging Prediction Intervals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Kriging is a method for spatial prediction that, given observations of a spatial process, gives the optimal linear predictor of the process at a new specified point. The kriging predictor may be used to define a prediction interval for the value of interest. The coverage of the prediction interval will, however, equal the nominal desired coverage only if it is constructed using the correct underlying covariance structure of the process. If this is unknown, it must be estimated from the data. We study the effect on the coverage accuracy of the prediction interval of substituting the true covariance parameters by estimators, and the effect of bootstrap calibration of coverage properties of the resulting 'plugin' interval. We demonstrate that plugin and bootstrap calibrated intervals are asymptotically accurate in some generality and that bootstrap calibration appears to have a significant effect in improving the rate of convergence of coverage error.  相似文献

Abstract.  Conventional bootstrap- t intervals for density functions based on kernel density estimators exhibit poor coverages due to failure of the bootstrap to estimate the bias correctly. The problem can be resolved by either estimating the bias explicitly or undersmoothing the kernel density estimate to undermine its bias asymptotically. The resulting bias-corrected intervals have an optimal coverage error of order arbitrarily close to second order for a sufficiently smooth density function. We investigated the effects on coverage error of both bias-corrected intervals when the nominal coverage level is calibrated by the iterated bootstrap. In either case, an asymptotic reduction of coverage error is possible provided that the bias terms are handled using an extra round of smoothed bootstrapping. Under appropriate smoothness conditions, the optimal coverage error of the iterated bootstrap- t intervals has order arbitrarily close to third order. Examples of both simulated and real data are reported to illustrate the iterated bootstrap procedures.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose several tests for monotonic trend based on the Brillinger's test statistic (1989, Biometrika, 76, 23–30). When there are highly correlated residuals or short record lengths, Brillinger's test procedure tends to have significance level much higher than the nominal level. It is found that this could be related to the discrepancy between the empirical distribution of the test statistic and the asymptotic normal distribution. Hence, in this paper, we propose three bootstrap-based procedures based on the Brillinger's test statistic to test for monotonic trend. The performance of the proposed test procedures is evaluated through an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study, and is compared to other trend test procedures in the literature. It is shown that the proposed bootstrap-based Brillinger test procedures can well control the significance levels and provide satisfactory power performance in testing the monotonic trend under different scenarios.  相似文献

In this article, we develop a new and novel kernel density estimator for a sum of weighted averages from a single population based on utilizing the well defined kernel density estimator in conjunction with classic inversion theory. This idea is further developed for a kernel density estimator for the difference of weighed averages from two independent populations. The resulting estimator is “bootstrap-like” in terms of its properties with respect to the derivation of approximate confidence intervals via a “plug-in” approach. This new approach is distinct from the bootstrap methodology in that it is analytically and computationally feasible to provide an exact estimate of the distribution function through direct calculation. Thus, our approach eliminates the error due to Monte Carlo resampling that arises within the context of simulation based approaches that are oftentimes necessary in order to derive bootstrap-based confidence intervals for statistics involving weighted averages of i.i.d. random variables. We provide several examples and carry forth a simulation study to show that our kernel density estimator performs better than the standard central limit theorem based approximation in term of coverage probability.  相似文献

Abstract.  A new kernel distribution function (df) estimator based on a non-parametric transformation of the data is proposed. It is shown that the asymptotic bias and mean squared error of the estimator are considerably smaller than that of the standard kernel df estimator. For the practical implementation of the new estimator a data-based choice of the bandwidth is proposed. Two possible areas of application are the non-parametric smoothed bootstrap and survival analysis. In the latter case new estimators for the survival function and the mean residual life function are derived.  相似文献

An important problem for fitting local linear regression is the choice of the smoothing parameter. As the smoothing parameter becomes large, the estimator tends to a straight line, which is the least squares fit in the ordinary linear regression setting. This property may be used to assess the adequacy of a simple linear model. Motivated by Silverman's (1981) work in kernel density estimation, a suitable test statistic is the critical smoothing parameter where the estimate changes from nonlinear to linear, while linearity or non- linearity requires a more precise judgment. We define the critical smoothing parameter through the approximate F-tests by Hastie and Tibshirani (1990). To assess the significance, the “wild bootstrap” procedure is used to replicate the data and the proportion of bootstrap samples which give a nonlinear estimate when using the critical bandwidth is obtained as the p-value. Simulation results show that the critical smoothing test is useful in detecting a wide range of alternatives.  相似文献

In this article, we address the testing problem for additivity in nonparametric regression models. We develop a kernel‐based consistent test of a hypothesis of additivity in nonparametric regression, and establish its asymptotic distribution under a sequence of local alternatives. Compared to other existing kernel‐based tests, the proposed test is shown to effectively ameliorate the influence from estimation bias of the additive component of the nonparametric regression, and hence increase its efficiency. Most importantly, it avoids the tuning difficulties by using estimation‐based optimal criteria, while there is no direct tuning strategy for other existing kernel‐based testing methods. We discuss the usage of the new test and give numerical examples to demonstrate the practical performance of the test. Abstract. We consider a general non‐parametric regression model, where the distribution of the error, given the covariate, is modelled by a conditional distribution function. For the estimation, a kernel approach as well as the (kernel based) empirical likelihood method are discussed. The latter method allows for incorporation of additional information on the error distribution into the estimation. We show weak convergence of the corresponding empirical processes to Gaussian processes and compare both approaches in asymptotic theory and by means of a simulation study.  相似文献

In this paper we considered a generalized additive model with second-order interaction terms. A local scoring algorithm (with backfitting) based on local linear kernel smoothers was used to estimate the model. Our main aim was to obtain procedures for testing second-order interaction terms. Backfitting theory is difficult in this context, and a bootstrap procedure is therefore provided for estimating the distribution of the test statistics. Given the high computational cost involved, binning techniques were used to speed up the computation in the estimation and testing process. A simulation study was carried out in order to assess the validity of the bootstrap-based tests. Lastly, our method was applied to real data drawn from an SO2 binary time series.  相似文献

Two bootstrap procedures are introduced into the hybrid of the backfitting algorithm and the Cochrane–Orcutt procedure in the estimation of a spatial-temporal model. The use of time blocks of consecutive observations in resampling steps proved to be optimal in terms of stability and efficiency of estimates. Between iterations, there were minimal changes in the empirical distributions of the parameter estimates associated with the covariate and temporal effects indicating convergence of the algorithm. Crop yield data are used to illustrate the proposed methods.

The simulation study indicated that prediction error from the fitted model (estimated from either Method 1 or Method 2) is very low. Also, the prediction error is relatively robust to the number of spatial units and the number of time points.  相似文献

A well-known problem in multiple regression is that it is possible to reject the hypothesis that all slope parameters are equal to zero, yet when applying the usual Student's T-test to the individual parameters, no significant differences are found. An alternative strategy is to estimate prediction error via the 0.632 bootstrap method for all models of interest and declare the parameters associated with the model that yields the smallest prediction error to differ from zero. The main results in this paper are that this latter strategy can have practical value versus Student's T; replacing squared error with absolute error can be beneficial in some situations and replacing least squares with an extension of the Theil-Sen estimator can substantially increase the probability of identifying the correct model under circumstances that are described.  相似文献

Abstract.  The problem of choosing the bandwidth h for kernel density estimation is considered. All the plug-in-type bandwidth selection methods require the use of a pilot bandwidth g . The usual way to make an h -dependent choice of g is by obtaining their asymptotic expressions separately and solving the two equations. In contrast, we obtain the asymptotically optimal value of g for every fixed h , thus making our selection 'less asymptotic'. Exact error expressions show that some usually assumed hypotheses have to be discarded in the asymptotic study in this case. Two versions of a new bandwidth selector based on this idea are proposed, and their properties are analysed through theoretical results and a simulation study.  相似文献

On Parametric Bootstrapping and Bayesian Prediction   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract.  We investigate bootstrapping and Bayesian methods for prediction. The observations and the variable being predicted are distributed according to different distributions. Many important problems can be formulated in this setting. This type of prediction problem appears when we deal with a Poisson process. Regression problems can also be formulated in this setting. First, we show that bootstrap predictive distributions are equivalent to Bayesian predictive distributions in the second-order expansion when some conditions are satisfied. Next, the performance of predictive distributions is compared with that of a plug-in distribution with an estimator. The accuracy of prediction is evaluated by using the Kullback–Leibler divergence. Finally, we give some examples.  相似文献

In epidemiological surveillance it is important that any unusual increase of reported cases be detected as rapidly as possible. Reliable forecasting based on a suitable time series model for an epidemiological indicator is necessary for estimating the expected non-epidemic indicator and to elaborate an alert threshold. Time series analyses of acute diseases often use Gaussian autoregressive integrated moving average models. However, these approaches can be adversely affected by departures from the true underlying distribution. The objective of this paper is to introduce a bootstrap procedure for obtaining prediction intervals in linear models in order to avoid the normality assumption. We present a Monte Carlo study comparing the finite sample properties of bootstrap prediction intervals with those of alternative methods. Finally, we illustrate the performance of the proposed method with a meningococcal disease incidence series.  相似文献
