Regarding piracy as the crime of stealing copyright holders’ rightful profits, many creative industries, such as the film, music, and gaming industries, are battling for stricter administrative and legal enforcement against copyright infringement. However, there is a counterargument that piracy could benefit copyright holders in the form of free promotion. Given China’s strict censorship of film content, this paper investigates how online piracy complicates the distribution of independent films in China. The advance of cyber technology and high-speed Internet access has not only fueled the spread of online film sharing, but has also encouraged public participation in the debate on the complex relationship between piracy, copyright, and censorship. Taking Jia Zhangke’s A Touch of Sin (2013) as a case study, this paper evaluates the alternative business models for Chinese independent cinema put forward by Chinese netizens.  相似文献

Although face-to-face events starring film professionals have become increasingly popular, they have rarely been studied, especially from the perspective of production. Focusing on the phenomenon of Chinese movie roadshows, this study explores the motivations and techniques used to produce popular media events in the Chinese film industry. Based on expert interviews with 15 media practitioners, the results showed that roadshows are staged as ritualized events that are centered on the performance of a symbolic boundary between “inside” and “outside” the media. Film industry professionals embrace face-to-face communication with audiences and use such events to display sincerity, producing them as a seemingly “unmediated” peek behind the veil of an otherwise hidden world. Moreover, communication on social media is another form of ritualized practice. We conclude that, by thus mediating the “unmediated,” movie roadshows offer an insightful perspective on the machinery of media power in China.  相似文献

Hybridisation refers to the fusion of diverse cultural elements which generates new cultural forms that are distinct yet interconnected with one another. Previous studies affirmed that hybridisation has become part of an ongoing trend in transnational culture, emerging from a Third Space where diverse cultural elements enmesh. This study aims to explore how Mulan's cultural identity is hybridised when the folklore flows from China to America, becoming entangled within a conflict of Chinese-Western transcultural clashes. Using Jameson's cultural identity model, the paper analyses Mulan's cultural identity in three texts which are the original The Ballad of Mulan, Disney's animated movie Mulan (1998) and its subsequent life-action installment Mulan (2020). Components measuring the protagonist's cultural identity comprising vocation, class, geography, philosophy, language, biological traits with cultural aspects are compared. The findings show that the movies have particularly hybridise the protagonist's cultural identity from the aspects of geography, philosophy, and language. This results in a hybrid cultural identity with transnational markers in Mulan. The significance of the research thus lies in its contribution towards highlighting how Chinese figures are increasingly hybridised by Western influences as the Chinese culture continues to transcend transnational borders.  相似文献

This article provides an interpretation the film Wolf Warrior II in the geohistorical context of the Chinese Dream, which is advocated by China’s President Xi Jinping, and considers the psychological domains that produce a new national subject. Focusing on the emotional energy of pride articulated in the film, this article shows that it constitutes the most essential emotional element in the formation of contemporary Chinese nationalism. We argue that the film interpellates the desiring subject for participation in a nationalist position that is locked in binary opposition with the West. We elucidate the emotional politics of pride by comparing the films produced in the eras of Mao and Deng, and we conclude that the emerging national subjectivity is a psychic transformation and reinvention of previous nationalist fantasies in the new context.  相似文献

外语学习不仅是语言的习得过程,更应当学习目的语文化,加强对目的语国家文化的认同与接受,只有这样才能熟练运用该语言与具有目的语国家文化背景的人进行有效的交流。同时,交际的过程是一个双向的交流传输过程,因此既要做到对目的语文化的输入,也要求做到对母语文化的输出,只有这样才能保证跨文化交际的平衡发展。面对频现的"中国文化失语症",我们在教学中应培养学生的主体文化意识,尤其是加强学生用英语表达本土文化的能力。《当孙悟空遇到蜘蛛侠》这部影片不仅向我们展示了中西文化的冲突与融合,同时也细腻地向我们展示了中国的传统文化。我们应该利用英文电影帮助英语学习,使其成为英语学习者不可或缺的一本活的教科书。  相似文献

Hedge which is identified as one of the most important branches of vagueness plays an indispensable role in academic writings, functioning as an effective tool in cushioning the danger of being too exact and accurate so as to create a harmonious "writer-reader-content" academic environment. This paper tries to look into epistemic verbs hedges by contrastively analyzing the use of hedges in two self-built corpora comprising 100 English Economic and Management Articles, of which 50 are written by Chinese authors and another 50 by English native authors, finding that there exists striking difference in the distribution of this kind of hedges, thus the paper may provide some hints to the pedagogic improvement of English and to further study.  相似文献

Postmodernists view all reality as representation and visual spectacle. This essay challenges this claim through film analysis of third world cinema and by tracing the tension between photography and history to the earlier debate of modernity in Siegfried Kracauer's work. The essay goes on to show the possibility of historically grounded visual images. By looking at the Chinese novelist Wang Anyi's photo narratives, the essay argues for a photographical image capable of fostering a sense of history deeply rooted in everyday life, communal practice, and social reality. Instead of being the inauthentic mirror of consumer culture, the photographical image is integral to historical imagination, narratives of everyday practice, and cultural memory.  相似文献
