The Wilcoxon rank-sum test and its variants are historically well-known to be very powerful nonparametric decision rules for testing no location difference between two groups given paired data versus a shift alternative. In this title, we propose a new alternative empirical likelihood (EL) ratio approach for testing the equality of marginal distributions given that sampling is from a continuous bivariate population. We show that in various shift alternative scenarios the proposed exact test is superior to the classic nonparametric procedures, which may break down completely or are frequently inferior to the density-based EL ratio test. This is particularly true in the cases where there is a nonconstant shift under the alternative or the data distributions are skewed. An extensive Monte Carlo study shows that the proposed test has excellent operating characteristics. We apply the density-based EL ratio test to analyze real data from two medical studies.  相似文献

We consider likelihood ratio statistics based on the usual profile likelihood and the standard adjustments thereof proposed in the literature in the presence of nuisance parameters. The role of data-dependent priors in ensuring approximate frequentist validity of posterior credible regions based on the inversion of these statistics is investigated. Unlike what happens with data-free priors, it is seen that the resulting probability matching conditions readily admit solutions which entail approximate frequentist validity of the highest posterior density region as well.  相似文献

Under the assumption of multivariate normality the likelihood ratio test is derived to test a hypothesis for Kronecker product structure on a covariance matrix in the context of multivariate repeated measures data. Although the proposed hypothesis testing can be computationally performed by indirect use of Proc Mixed of SAS, the Proc Mixed algorithm often fails to converge. We provide an alternative algorithm. The algorithm is illustrated with two real data sets. A simulation study is also conducted for the purpose of sample size consideration.  相似文献

In the present paper we are going to extend the likelihood ratio test to the case in which the available experimental information involves fuzzy imprecision (more precisely, the observable events associated with the random experiment concerning the test may be characterized as fuzzy subsets of the sample space, as intended by Zadeh, 1965). In addition, we will approximate the immediate intractable extension, which is based on Zadeh’s probabilistic definition, by using the minimum inaccuracy principle of estimation from fuzzy data, that has been introduced in previous papers as an operative extension of the maximum likelihood method.  相似文献

Profile data emerges when the quality of a product or process is characterized by a functional relationship among (input and output) variables. In this paper, we focus on the case where each profile has one response variable Y, one explanatory variable x, and the functional relationship between these two variables can be rather arbitrary. The basic concept can be applied to a much wider case, however. We propose a general method based on the Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) for monitoring of profile data. The proposed method uses nonparametric regression to estimate the on-line profiles and thus does not require any functional form for the profiles. Both Shewhart-type and EWMA-type control charts are considered. The average run length (ARL) performance of the proposed method is studied. It is shown that the proposed GLRT-based control chart can efficiently detect both location and dispersion shifts of the on-line profiles from the baseline profile. An upper control limit (UCL) corresponding to a desired in-control ARL value is constructed.  相似文献

Longitudinal imaging studies have moved to the forefront of medical research due to their ability to characterize spatio-temporal features of biological structures across the lifespan. Valid inference in longitudinal imaging requires enough flexibility of the covariance model to allow reasonable fidelity to the true pattern. On the other hand, the existence of computable estimates demands a parsimonious parameterization of the covariance structure. Separable (Kronecker product) covariance models provide one such parameterization in which the spatial and temporal covariances are modeled separately. However, evaluating the validity of this parameterization in high dimensions remains a challenge. Here we provide a scientifically informed approach to assessing the adequacy of separable (Kronecker product) covariance models when the number of observations is large relative to the number of independent sampling units (sample size). We address both the general case, in which unstructured matrices are considered for each covariance model, and the structured case, which assumes a particular structure for each model. For the structured case, we focus on the situation where the within-subject correlation is believed to decrease exponentially in time and space as is common in longitudinal imaging studies. However, the provided framework equally applies to all covariance patterns used within the more general multivariate repeated measures context. Our approach provides useful guidance for high dimension, low-sample size data that preclude using standard likelihood-based tests. Longitudinal medical imaging data of caudate morphology in schizophrenia illustrate the approaches appeal.  相似文献

We study the problem of classification with multiple q-variate observations with and without time effect on each individual. We develop new classification rules for populations with certain structured and unstructured mean vectors and under certain covariance structures. The new classification rules are effective when the number of observations is not large enough to estimate the variance–covariance matrix. Computational schemes for maximum likelihood estimates of required population parameters are given. We apply our findings to two real data sets as well as to a simulated data set.  相似文献

Asymptotic tests for multivariate repeated measures are derived under non-normality and unspecified dependence structure. Notwithstanding their broader scope of application, the methods are particularly useful when a random vector of large number of repeated measurements are collected from each subject but the number of subjects per treatment group is limited. In some experimental situations, replicating the experiment large number of times could be expensive or infeasible. Although taking large number of repeated measurements could be relatively cheaper, due to within subject dependence the number of parameters involved could get large pretty quickly. Under mild conditions on the persistence of the dependence, we have derived asymptotic multivariate tests for the three testing problems in repeated measures analysis. The simulation results provide evidence in favour of the accuracy of the approximations to the null distributions.  相似文献

The occurrence of missing data is an often unavoidable consequence of repeated measures studies. Fortunately, multivariate general linear models such as growth curve models and linear mixed models with random effects have been well developed to analyze incomplete normally-distributed repeated measures data. Most statistical methods have assumed that the missing data occur at random. This assumption may include two types of missing data mechanism: missing completely at random (MCAR) and missing at random (MAR) in the sense of Rubin (1976). In this paper, we develop a test procedure for distinguishing these two types of missing data mechanism for incomplete normally-distributed repeated measures data. The proposed test is similar in spiril to the test of Park and Davis (1992). We derive the test for incomplete normally-distribrlted repeated measures data using linear mixed models. while Park and Davis (1992) cleirved thr test for incomplete repeatctl categorical data in the framework of Grizzle Starmer. and Koch (1969). Thr proposed procedure can be applied easily to any other multivariate general linear model which allow for missing data. The test is illustrated using the hip-replacernent patient.data from Crowder and Hand (1990).  相似文献

This article derives the likelihood ratio statistic to test the independence between (X 1,…,X r ) and (X r+1,…,X k ) under the assumption that (X 1,…,X k ) has a multivariate normal distribution and that a sample of size n is available, where for N observation vectors all components are available, while for M = (n + N) observation vectors, the data on the last q components, (Xk-q+1,…,X k ) are missing (k+q≥r).  相似文献

The author proposes saddlepoint approximation methods that are adapted to multivariate conditional inference in canonical exponential familles. Several approaches to approximating conditional discrete distributions involve dividing an approximation to the full joint mass function, summed over tail regions of interest, by an approximate marginal density. The author first approximates this conditional likelihood by the adjusted profile likelihood, and then applies a multivariate saddlepoint approximation. He also presents formulas to aid in performing simultaneously the profiling and maximizing steps.  相似文献

In this article, small area estimation under a multivariate linear model for repeated measures data is considered. The proposed model aims to get a model which borrows strength both across small areas and over time. The model accounts for repeated surveys, grouped response units, and random effects variations. Estimation of model parameters is discussed within a likelihood based approach. Prediction of random effects, small area means across time points, and per group units are derived. A parametric bootstrap method is proposed for estimating the mean squared error of the predicted small area means. Results are supported by a simulation study.  相似文献

In this paper, an empirical likelihood ratio based goodness-of-fit test for the skew normality is proposed. The asymptotic results of the test statistic under the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis are derived. Simulations indicate that the Type I error of the proposed test can be well controlled for a given nominal level. The power comparison with other available tests shows that the proposed test is competitive. The test is applied to IQ scores data set and Australian Institute of Sport data set to illustrate the testing procedure.  相似文献

Multivariate normal, due to its well-established theories, is commonly utilized to analyze correlated data of various types. However, the validity of the resultant inference is, more often than not, erroneous if the model assumption fails. We present a modification for making the multivariate normal likelihood acclimatize itself to general correlated data. The modified likelihood is asymptotically legitimate for any true underlying joint distributions so long as they have finite second moments. One can, hence, acquire full likelihood inference without knowing the true random mechanisms underlying the data. Simulations and real data analysis are provided to demonstrate the merit of our proposed parametric robust method.  相似文献

Abstract

Weibull mixture models are widely used in a variety of fields for modeling phenomena caused by heterogeneous sources. We focus on circumstances in which original observations are not available, and instead the data comes in the form of a grouping of the original observations. We illustrate EM algorithm for fitting Weibull mixture models for grouped data and propose a bootstrap likelihood ratio test (LRT) for determining the number of subpopulations in a mixture model. The effectiveness of the LRT methods are investigated via simulation. We illustrate the utility of these methods by applying them to two grouped data applications.  相似文献

The Inverse Gaussian (IG) distribution is commonly introduced to model and examine right skewed data having positive support. When applying the IG model, it is critical to develop efficient goodness-of-fit tests. In this article, we propose a new test statistic for examining the IG goodness-of-fit based on approximating parametric likelihood ratios. The parametric likelihood ratio methodology is well-known to provide powerful likelihood ratio tests. In the nonparametric context, the classical empirical likelihood (EL) ratio method is often applied in order to efficiently approximate properties of parametric likelihoods, using an approach based on substituting empirical distribution functions for their population counterparts. The optimal parametric likelihood ratio approach is however based on density functions. We develop and analyze the EL ratio approach based on densities in order to test the IG model fit. We show that the proposed test is an improvement over the entropy-based goodness-of-fit test for IG presented by Mudholkar and Tian (2002). Theoretical support is obtained by proving consistency of the new test and an asymptotic proposition regarding the null distribution of the proposed test statistic. Monte Carlo simulations confirm the powerful properties of the proposed method. Real data examples demonstrate the applicability of the density-based EL ratio goodness-of-fit test for an IG assumption in practice.  相似文献

The authors propose two composite likelihood estimation procedures for multivariate models with regression/univariate and dependence parameters. One is a two‐stage method based on both univariate and bivariate margins. The other estimates all the parameters simultaneously based on bivariate margins. For some special cases, the authors compare their asymptotic efficiencies with the maximum likelihood method. The performance of the two methods is reasonable, except that the first procedure is inefficient for the regression parameters under strong dependence. The second approach is generally better for the regression parameters, but less efficient for the dependence parameters under weak dependence.  相似文献

A Monte Carlo study was used to examine the Type I error and power values of five multivariate tests for the single-factor repeated measures model The performance of Hotelling's T2 and four nonparametric tests, including a chi-square and an F-test version of a rank-transform procedure, were investigated for different distributions, sample sizes, and numbers of repeated measures. The results indicated that both Hotellings T* and the F-test version of the rank-transform performed well, producing Type I error rates which were close to the nominal value. The chi-square version of the rank-transform test, on the other hand, produced inflated Type I error rates for every condition studied. The Hotelling and F-test version of the rank-transform procedure showed similar power for moderately-skewed distributions, but for strongly skewed distributions the F-test showed much better power. The performance of the other nonparametric tests depended heavily on sample size. Based on these results, the F-test version of the rank-transform procedure is recommended for the single-factor repeated measures model.  相似文献

This paper considers an alternative to iterative procedures used to calculate maximum likelihood estimates of regression coefficients in a general class of discrete data regression models. These models can include both marginal and conditional models and also local regression models. The classical estimation procedure is generally via a Fisher-scoring algorithm and can be computationally intensive for high-dimensional problems. The alternative method proposed here is non-iterative and is likely to be more efficient in high-dimensional problems. The method is demonstrated on two different classes of regression models.  相似文献
