This article establishes the almost sure convergence and asymptotic normality of levels and differenced quasi maximum likelihood (QML) estimators of dynamic panel data models. The QML estimators are robust with respect to initial conditions, conditional and time-series heteroskedasticity, and misspecification of the log-likelihood. The article also provides an ECME algorithm for calculating levels QML estimates. Finally, it compares the finite-sample performance of levels and differenced QML estimators, the differenced generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator, and the system GMM estimator. The QML estimators usually have smaller— typically substantially smaller—bias and root mean squared errors than the panel data GMM estimators.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider dynamic panel data models where the autoregressive parameter changes over time. We propose the GMM and ML estimators for this model. We conduct Monte Carlo simulation to compare the performance of these two estimators. The simulation results show that the ML estimator outperforms the GMM estimator.  相似文献

In this research, we describe a nonparametric time-varying coefficient model for the analysis of panel count data. We extend the traditional panel count data models by incorporating B-splines estimates of time-varying coefficients. We show that the proposed model can be implemented using a nonparametric maximum pseudo-likelihood method. We further examine the theoretical properties of the estimators of model parameters. The operational characteristics of the proposed method are evaluated through a simulation study. For illustration, we analyse data from a study of childhood wheezing, and describe the time-varying effect of an inflammatory marker on the risk of wheezing.  相似文献

Abstract

The locally weighted censored quantile regression approach is proposed for panel data models with fixed effects, which allows for random censoring. The resulting estimators are obtained by employing the fixed effects quantile regression method. The weights are selected either parametrically, semi-parametrically or non-parametrically. The large panel data asymptotics are used in an attempt to cope with the incidental parameter problem. The consistency and limiting distribution of the proposed estimator are also derived. The finite sample performance of the proposed estimators are examined via Monte Carlo simulations.  相似文献

This article considers first-order autoregressive panel model that is a simple model for dynamic panel data (DPD) models. The generalized method of moments (GMM) gives efficient estimators for these models. This efficiency is affected by the choice of the weighting matrix that has been used in GMM estimation. The non-optimal weighting matrices have been used in the conventional GMM estimators. This led to a loss of efficiency. Therefore, we present new GMM estimators based on optimal or suboptimal weighting matrices. Monte Carlo study indicates that the bias and efficiency of the new estimators are more reliable than the conventional estimators.  相似文献

The omission of important variables is a well‐known model specification issue in regression analysis and mixed linear models. The author considers longitudinal data models that are special cases of the mixed linear models; in particular, they are linear models of repeated observations on a subject. Models of omitted variables have origins in both the econometrics and biostatistics literatures. The author describes regression coefficient estimators that are robust to and that provide the basis for detecting the influence of certain types of omitted variables. New robust estimators and omitted variable tests are introduced and illustrated with a case study that investigates the determinants of tax liability.  相似文献

This paper proposes a generalized least squares and a generalized method of moment estimators for dynamic panel data models with both individual-specific and time-specific effects. We also demonstrate that the common estimators ignoring the presence of time-specific effects are inconsistent when N→∞N but T is finite if the time-specific effects are indeed present. Monte Carlo studies are also conducted to investigate the finite sample properties of various estimators. It is found that the generalized least squares estimator has the smallest bias and root mean square error, and also has nominal size close to the empirical size. It is also found that even when there is no presence of time-specific effects, there is hardly any efficiency loss of the generalized least squares estimator assuming its presence compared to the generalized least squares estimator allowing only the presence of individual-specific effects.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the estimation of semiparametric panel data smooth coefficient models. We propose a class of local generalized method of moments (LGMM) estimators that are simple and easy to implement in practice. We show that the proposed LGMM estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that our proposed estimator performs quite well in finite samples. An empirical application using a large panel of U.K. firms is also presented.  相似文献

When genuine panel data samples are not available, repeated cross-sectional surveys can be used to form so-called pseudo panels. In this article, we investigate the properties of linear pseudo panel data estimators with fixed number of cohorts and time observations. We extend standard linear pseudo panel data setup to models with factor residuals by adapting the quasi-differencing approach developed for genuine panels. In a Monte Carlo study, we find that the proposed procedure has good finite sample properties in situations with endogeneity, cohort interactive effects, and near nonidentification. Finally, as an illustration the proposed method is applied to data from Ecuador to study labor supply elasticity. Supplementary materials for this article are available online.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes an exponential class of dynamic binary choice panel data models for the analysis of short T (time dimension) large N (cross section dimension) panel data sets that allow for unobserved heterogeneity (fixed effects) to be arbitrarily correlated with the covariates. The paper derives moment conditions that are invariant to the fixed effects which are then used to identify and estimate the parameters of the model. Accordingly, generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators are proposed that are consistent and asymptotically normally distributed at the root-N rate. We also study the conditional likelihood approach and show that under exponential specification, it can identify the effect of state dependence but not the effects of other covariates. Monte Carlo experiments show satisfactory finite sample performance for the proposed estimators and investigate their robustness to misspecification.  相似文献

H., eds., Analysis of Panels and Limited Dependent Variables, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, pp. 199-225] are extended to higher-order dynamic panel data models with general covariance structure. The focus is on estimation of both short- and long-run coefficients. The results show that proper modelling of the disturbance covariance structure is indispensable. The bias approximations are used to construct bias corrected estimators which are then applied to quarterly data from 14 European Union countries. Money demand functions for M1, M2 and M3 are estimated for the EU area as a whole for the period 1991: I-1995: IV. Significant spillovers between countries are found reflecting the dependence of domestic money demand on foreign developments. The empirical results show that in general plausible long-run effects are obtained by the bias corrected estimators. Moreover, finite sample bias, although of moderate magnitude, is present underlining the importance of more refined estimation techniques. Also the efficiency gains by exploiting the heteroscedasticity and cross-correlation patterns between countries are sometimes considerable.  相似文献

In this article, we provide some robust estimation of moments of the random effects and the errors in dynamic panel data models with potential intercorrelation. By differencing the residuals over the individual and time indies, we modify the popularly used Arellano-Bond GMM estimator of the parameter coefficient and study its asymptotic properties. Based on the modified parameter estimator, we construct, respectively, some moment estimators of the random effects and the errors with no affecting each other. Their asymptotic normalities are obtained under some mild conditions. The finite sample properties are investigated by a small Monte Carlo simulation experiment.  相似文献

The method of likelihood imputation is devised under the framework of latent structure models where the observation is a statistic of the complete data which can only be specified on a latent basis. The imputed data set is chosen to differ least from the observed one in their information contents—a concept with general implications for the analysis of incomplete-data. In contrast to the standard conditional-mean single imputation, our procedure depends on an entire likelihood region instead of any single point in it, and yields consistent parameter estimators nevertheless. This article analyzes a growing group of fixed T dynamic panel data estimators with a multifactor error structure. We use a unified notational approach to describe these estimators and discuss their properties in terms of deviations from an underlying set of basic assumptions. Furthermore, we consider the extendability of these estimators to practical situations that may frequently arise, such as their ability to accommodate unbalanced panels and common observed factors. Using a large-scale simulation exercise, we consider scenarios that remain largely unexplored in the literature, albeit being of great empirical relevance. In particular, we examine (i) the effect of the presence of weakly exogenous covariates, (ii) the effect of changing the magnitude of the correlation between the factor loadings of the dependent variable and those of the covariates, (iii) the impact of the number of moment conditions on bias and size for GMM estimators, and finally (iv) the effect of sample size. We apply each of these estimators to a crime application using a panel data set of local government authorities in New South Wales, Australia; we find that the results bear substantially different policy implications relative to those potentially derived from standard dynamic panel GMM estimators. Thus, our study may serve as a useful guide to practitioners who wish to allow for multiplicative sources of unobserved heterogeneity in their model.  相似文献

This paper studies penalized quantile regression for dynamic panel data with fixed effects, where the penalty involves l1 shrinkage of the fixed effects. Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we present evidence that the penalty term reduces the dynamic panel bias and increases the efficiency of the estimators. The underlying intuition is that there is no need to use instrumental variables for the lagged dependent variable in the dynamic panel data model without fixed effects. This provides an additional use for the shrinkage models, other than model selection and efficiency gains. We propose a Bayesian information criterion based estimator for the parameter that controls the degree of shrinkage. We illustrate the usefulness of the novel econometric technique by estimating a “target leverage” model that includes a speed of capital structure adjustment. Using the proposed penalized quantile regression model the estimates of the adjustment speeds lie between 3% and 44% across the quantiles, showing strong evidence that there is substantial heterogeneity in the speed of adjustment among firms.  相似文献

This article extends the spatial panel data regression with fixed-effects to the case where the regression function is partially linear and some regressors may be endogenous or predetermined. Under the assumption that the spatial weighting matrix is strictly exogenous, we propose a sieve two stage least squares (S2SLS) regression. Under some sufficient conditions, we show that the proposed estimator for the finite dimensional parameter is root-N consistent and asymptotically normally distributed and that the proposed estimator for the unknown function is consistent and also asymptotically normally distributed but at a rate slower than root-N. Consistent estimators for the asymptotic variances of the proposed estimators are provided. A small scale simulation study is conducted, and the simulation results show that the proposed procedure has good finite sample performance.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper considers panel data models with fixed effects which have grouped patterns with unknown group membership. A two-stage estimation (TSE) procedure is developed to improve the properties of the GFE estimators of common parameters when the time span is small. Firstly, the common parameters are estimated. Subsequently, the optimal group assignment and the estimators of group effects are obtained by the K-means algorithm. Monte Carlo results reveal that the TSE estimator has a much smaller bias than the GFE estimator when the values of difference between effects are moderately small or at high variance of the idiosyncratic error.  相似文献
