Procedures for detecting change points in sequences of correlated observations (e.g., time series) can help elucidate their complicated structure. Current literature on the detection of multiple change points emphasizes the analysis of sequences of independent random variables. We address the problem of an unknown number of variance changes in the presence of long-range dependence (e.g., long memory processes). Our results are also applicable to time series whose spectrum slowly varies across octave bands. An iterated cumulative sum of squares procedure is introduced in order to look at the multiscale stationarity of a time series; that is, the variance structure of the wavelet coefficients on a scale by scale basis. The discrete wavelet transform enables us to analyze a given time series on a series of physical scales. The result is a partitioning of the wavelet coefficients into locally stationary regions. Simulations are performed to validate the ability of this procedure to detect and locate multiple variance changes. A ‘time’ series of vertical ocean shear measurements is also analyzed, where a variety of nonstationary features are identified.  相似文献

We consider detection of multiple changes in the distribution of periodic and autocorrelated data with known period. To account for periodicity we transform the sequence of vector observations by arranging them in matrices and thereby producing a sequence of independently and identically distributed matrix observations. We propose methods of testing the equality of matrix distributions and present methods that can be applied to matrix observations using the E-divisive algorithm. We show that periodicity and autocorrelation degrade existing change detection methods because they blur the changes that these procedures aim to discover. Methods that ignore the periodicity have low power to detect changes in the mean and the variance of periodic time series when the periodic effects overwhelm the true changes, while the proposed methods detect such changes with high power. We illustrate the proposed methods by detecting changes in the water quality of Lake Kasumigaura in Japan. Modern methods for detecting changes in the scale or covariance of multivariate distributions rely primarily on testing for the constancy of the covariance matrix. These depend on higher-order moment conditions, and also do not work well when the dimension of the data is large or even moderate relative to the sample size. In this paper, we propose a nonparametric change point test for multivariate data using rankings obtained from data depth measures. As the data depth of an observation measures its centrality relative to the sample, changes in data depth may signify a change of scale of the underlying distribution, and the proposed test is particularly responsive to detecting such changes. We provide a full asymptotic theory for the proposed test statistic under the null hypothesis that the observations are stable, and natural conditions under which the test is consistent. The finite sample properties are investigated by means of a Monte Carlo simulation, and these along with the theoretical results confirm that the test is robust to heavy tails, skewness and high dimensionality. The proposed methods are demonstrated with an application to structural break detection in the rate of change of pollutants linked to acid rain measured in Turkey lake, a lake in central Ontario, Canada. Our test suggests a change in the rate of acid rain in the late 1980s/early 1990s, which coincides with clean air legislation in Canada and the US. Sequential multi-chart detection procedures for detecting changes in multichannel sensor systems are developed. In the case of complete information on pre-change and post-change distributions, the detection algorithm represents a likelihood ratio-based multichannel generalization of Page’s cumulative sum (CUSUM) test that is applied to general stochastic models that may include correlated and nonstationary observations. There are many potential application areas where it is necessary to consider multichannel generalizations and general statistical models. In this paper our main motivation for doing so is network security: rapid anomaly detection for an early detection of attacks in computer networks that lead to changes in network traffic. Moreover, this kind of application encourages the development of a nonparametric multichannel detection test that does not use exact pre-change (legitimate) and post-change (attack) traffic models. The proposed nonparametric method can be effectively applied to detect a wide variety of attacks such as denial-of-service attacks, worm-based attacks, port-scanning, and man-in-the-middle attacks. In addition, we propose a multichannel CUSUM procedure that is based on binary quantized data; this procedure turns out to be more efficient than the previous two algorithms in certain scenarios. All proposed detection algorithms are based on the change-point detection theory. They utilize the thresholding of test statistics to achieve a fixed rate of false alarms, while allowing changes in statistical models to be detected “as soon as possible”. Theoretical frameworks for the performance analysis of detection procedures, as well as results of Monte Carlo simulations for a Poisson example and results of detecting real flooding attacks, are presented.  相似文献

The detection of (structural) breaks or the so called change point problem has drawn increasing attention from the theoretical, applied economic and financial fields. Much of the existing research concentrates on the detection of change points and asymptotic properties of their estimators in panels when N, the number of panels, as well as T, the number of observations in each panel are large. In this paper we pursue a different approach, i.e., we consider the asymptotic properties when N→∞ while keeping T fixed. This situation is typically related to large (firm-level) data containing financial information about an immense number of firms/stocks across a limited number of years/quarters/months. We propose a general approach for testing for break(s) in this setup. In particular, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of test statistics. We also propose a wild bootstrap procedure that could be used to generate the critical values of the test statistics. The theoretical approach is supplemented by numerous simulations and by an empirical illustration. We demonstrate that the testing procedure works well in the framework of the four factors CAPM model. In particular, we estimate the breaks in the monthly returns of US mutual funds during the period January 2006 to February 2010 which covers the subprime crises.  相似文献

Consider a sequence of independent observations which change their marginal distribution at most once somewhere in the sequence and one is not certain where the change has occurred. One would be interested in detecting the change and determining the two distributions which would describe the sequence. On the other hand if no change had occurred, one would want to know the common distribution of the observations. This study develops a Bayesian test for detecting a switch from one linear model to another. The test is based on the marginal posterior mass function of the switch point and the posterior probability of a stable model. This test and an informal sequential procedure of Smith are illustrated with data generated from an unstable linear regression model, which changes the linear relationship between the dependent and independent variables  相似文献

In this article, we propose a moving kernel-weighted variance ratio statistic to monitor persistence change in infinite variance observations. We focus on I(1) to I(0) persistence change for sequences in the domain of attraction of a stable law and local-to-finite variance sequences. The null distribution of the monitoring statistic and its consistency are proved. In particular, a bootstrap procedure is proposed to determine the critical values for the derived asymptotic distribution depends on unknown tail index. The small sample performances of proposed monitoring procedure are illustrated by both simulation and application to a high frequency financial data.  相似文献

In the dynamic financial market, the change of financial asset prices is always described as a certain random events which result in abrupt changes. The random time when the event occurs is called a change point. As the event happens, in order to mitigate property damage the government should increase the macro-control ability. As a result, we need to find a valid statistical model for change point problem to solve it effectively. This paper proposes a semiparametric model for detecting the change points. According to the research of empirical studies and hypothesis testing we acquire the maximum likelihood estimators of change points. We use the loglikelihood ratio to test the multiple change points. We obtain some asymptotic results. The estimated change point is more efficient than the non parametric one through simulation experiments. Real data application illustrates the usage of the model.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we examine the issue of detecting explosive behavior in economic and financial time series when an explosive episode is both ongoing at the end of the sample and of finite length. We propose a testing strategy based on a subsampling method in which a suitable test statistic is calculated on a finite number of end-of-sample observations, with a critical value obtained using subsample test statistics calculated on the remaining observations. This approach also has the practical advantage that, by virtue of how the critical values are obtained, it can deliver tests which are robust to, among other things, conditional heteroskedasticity and serial correlation in the driving shocks. We also explore modifications of the raw statistics to account for unconditional heteroskedasticity using studentization and a White-type correction. We evaluate the finite sample size and power properties of our proposed procedures and find that they offer promising levels of power, suggesting the possibility for earlier detection of end-of-sample bubble episodes compared to existing procedures.  相似文献

In high-dimensional regression, the presence of influential observations may lead to inaccurate analysis results so that it is a prime and important issue to detect these unusual points before statistical regression analysis. Most of the traditional approaches are, however, based on single-case diagnostics, and they may fail due to the presence of multiple influential observations that suffer from masking effects. In this paper, an adaptive multiple-case deletion approach is proposed for detecting multiple influential observations in the presence of masking effects in high-dimensional regression. The procedure contains two stages. Firstly, we propose a multiple-case deletion technique, and obtain an approximate clean subset of the data that is presumably free of influential observations. To enhance efficiency, in the second stage, we refine the detection rule. Monte Carlo simulation studies and a real-life data analysis investigate the effective performance of the proposed procedure.  相似文献

The general problem of outlier detection and five recursive outlier detection procedures considered in the study are defined. The methods to compute powers, probabilities of detecting ≥1 outliers, and >1 observations including at least one inlier as outliers are computed and results are discussed. Results show that no procedure is most powerful when the actual number of outlier present in the sample is exactly, under-, and overestimated. The probabilities of inliers being detected as outliers are also substantial particularly when outliers occur only on one side of the sample  相似文献

In this paper, we employ the parametric bootstrap to approximate the finite sample distribution of a goodness-of-fit test statistic in Fan (1994). We show that the proposed bootstrap procedure works in that the bootstrap distribution conditional on the random sample tends to the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic in probability. A simulation study demonstrates that the bootstrap approximation works extremely well in small samples with only 25 observations and is very robust to the value of the smoothing parameter in the kernel density estimation.  相似文献

In this paper, we show that proportions of observations that fall into a random region determined by a given Borel set and a central order statistic converge almost surely, provided that the corresponding population quantile is unique. We also describe three types of possible asymptotic behaviour of these proportions in the case of non-unique population quantile. As an application of our findings we establish limiting properties of numbers of ties with a central order statistics in a discrete sample. Our results are derived not only for independent and identically distributed observations but more generally for strictly stationary and ergodic sequences of random variables.  相似文献

It is shown that the stopping rule signaling a parameter change satisfies the desired asymptotic property as seen in Lee, Lee, and Na (submitted for publication). Abstract

We investigate the problem of testing for variance breaks in the case where the variance structure is assumed to be smoothly time-varying under the null. Since the classical tests are aimed to detect any change in the variance, they are not able to distinguish between smooth non constant variance and abrupt breaks. In this paper a new procedure for detecting variance breaks taking into account for smooth changes in the variance under the null is proposed. The finite sample properties of the test we introduce are investigated by Monte Carlo experiments. The theoretical outputs are illustrated using U.S. macroeconomic data.  相似文献

In this study, we propose a group sequential procedure that allows the change of necessary sample size at intermediary stage in sequential test. In the procedure, we formulate the conditional power to judge the necessity of the change of sample size in decision rules. Furthermore, we present an integral formula of the power of the test and show how to change the necessary sample size by using the power of the test. Partially varying coefficient single-index models (PVCSIM) are a class of semiparametric regression models. One important assumption is that the model error is independently and identically distributed, which may contradict with the reality in many applications. For example, in the economical and financial applications, the observations may be serially correlated over time. Based on the empirical likelihood technique, we propose a procedure for testing the serial correlation of random error in PVCSIM. Under some regular conditions, we show that the proposed empirical likelihood ratio statistic asymptotically follows a standard χ2 distribution. We also present some numerical studies to illustrate the performance of our proposed testing procedure.  相似文献

We consider nonparametric logistic regression and propose a generalized likelihood test for detecting a threshold effect that indicates a relationship between some risk factor and a defined outcome above the threshold but none below it. One important field of application is occupational medicine and in particular, epidemiological studies. In epidemiological studies, segmented fully parametric logistic regression models are often threshold models, where it is assumed that the exposure has no influence on a response up to a possible unknown threshold, and has an effect beyond that threshold. Finding efficient methods for detection and estimation of a threshold is a very important task in these studies. This article proposes such methods in a context of nonparametric logistic regression. We use a local version of unknown likelihood functions and show that under rather common assumptions the asymptotic power of our test is one. We present a guaranteed non asymptotic upper bound for the significance level of the proposed test. If applying the test yields the acceptance of the conclusion that there was a change point (and hence a threshold limit value), we suggest using the local maximum likelihood estimator of the change point and consider the asymptotic properties of this estimator.  相似文献

Abstract.  In this paper, we consider the problem of testing for parameter changes in time series models based on a cusum test. Although the test procedure is well established for the mean and variance in time series models, a general parameter case has not been discussed in the literature. Therefore, here we develop a cusum test for parameter change in a more general framework. As an example, we consider the change of the parameters in a random coeefficient autoregressive (1) model and that of the autocovariances of a linear process.
