The class of Multivariate BiLinear GARCH (MBL-GARCH) models is proposed and its statistical properties are investigated. The model can be regarded as a generalization to a multivariate setting of the univariate BL-GARCH model proposed by Storti and Vitale (Stat Methods Appl 12:19–40, 2003a; Comput Stat 18:387–400, 2003b). It is shown how MBL-GARCH models allow to account for asymmetric effects in both conditional variances and correlations. An EM algorithm for the maximum likelihood estimation of the model parameters is derived. Furthermore, in order to test for the appropriateness of the conditional variance and covariance specifications, a set of robust conditional moments test statistics are defined. Finally, the effectiveness of MBL-GARCH models in a risk management setting is assessed by means of an application to the estimation of the optimal hedge ratio in futures hedging.  相似文献

Linear mixed models are regularly applied to animal and plant breeding data to evaluate genetic potential. Residual maximum likelihood (REML) is the preferred method for estimating variance parameters associated with this type of model. Typically an iterative algorithm is required for the estimation of variance parameters. Two algorithms which can be used for this purpose are the expectation‐maximisation (EM) algorithm and the parameter expanded EM (PX‐EM) algorithm. Both, particularly the EM algorithm, can be slow to converge when compared to a Newton‐Raphson type scheme such as the average information (AI) algorithm. The EM and PX‐EM algorithms require specification of the complete data, including the incomplete and missing data. We consider a new incomplete data specification based on a conditional derivation of REML. We illustrate the use of the resulting new algorithm through two examples: a sire model for lamb weight data and a balanced incomplete block soybean variety trial. In the cases where the AI algorithm failed, a REML PX‐EM based on the new incomplete data specification converged in 28% to 30% fewer iterations than the alternative REML PX‐EM specification. For the soybean example a REML EM algorithm using the new specification converged in fewer iterations than the current standard specification of a REML PX‐EM algorithm. The new specification integrates linear mixed models, Henderson's mixed model equations, REML and the REML EM algorithm into a cohesive framework.  相似文献

Mixture cure models are widely used when a proportion of patients are cured. The proportional hazards mixture cure model and the accelerated failure time mixture cure model are the most popular models in practice. Usually the expectation–maximisation (EM) algorithm is applied to both models for parameter estimation. Bootstrap methods are used for variance estimation. In this paper we propose a smooth semi‐nonparametric (SNP) approach in which maximum likelihood is applied directly to mixture cure models for parameter estimation. The variance can be estimated by the inverse of the second derivative of the SNP likelihood. A comprehensive simulation study indicates good performance of the proposed method. We investigate stage effects in breast cancer by applying the proposed method to breast cancer data from the South Carolina Cancer Registry.  相似文献

We generalize the Gaussian mixture transition distribution (GMTD) model introduced by Le and co-workers to the mixture autoregressive (MAR) model for the modelling of non-linear time series. The models consist of a mixture of K stationary or non-stationary AR components. The advantages of the MAR model over the GMTD model include a more full range of shape changing predictive distributions and the ability to handle cycles and conditional heteroscedasticity in the time series. The stationarity conditions and autocorrelation function are derived. The estimation is easily done via a simple EM algorithm and the model selection problem is addressed. The shape changing feature of the conditional distributions makes these models capable of modelling time series with multimodal conditional distributions and with heteroscedasticity. The models are applied to two real data sets and compared with other competing models. The MAR models appear to capture features of the data better than other competing models do.  相似文献

Estimation and Properties of a Time-Varying EGARCH(1,1) in Mean Model   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Time-varying GARCH-M models are commonly employed in econometrics and financial economics. Yet the recursive nature of the conditional variance makes likelihood analysis of these models computationally infeasible. This article outlines the issues and suggests to employ a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm which allows the calculation of a classical estimator via the simulated EM algorithm or a simulated Bayesian solution in only O(T) computational operations, where T is the sample size. Furthermore, the theoretical dynamic properties of a time-varying-parameter EGARCH(1,1)-M are derived. We discuss them and apply the suggested Bayesian estimation to three major stock markets.  相似文献

The statistical literature on the analysis of discrete variate time series has concentrated mainly on parametric models, that is the conditional probability mass function is assumed to belong to a parametric family. Generally, these parametric models impose strong assumptions on the relationship between the conditional mean and variance. To generalize these implausible assumptions, this paper instead considers a more realistic semiparametric model, called random rounded integer-valued autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (RRINARCH) model, where there are essentially no assumptions on the relationship between the conditional mean and variance. The new model has several advantages: (a) it provides a coherent semiparametric framework for discrete variate time series, in which the conditional mean and variance can be modeled separately; (b) it allows negative values both for the series and its autocorrelation function; (c) its autocorrelation structure is the same as that of a standard autoregressive (AR) process; (d) standard software for its estimation is directly applicable. For the new model, conditions for stationarity, ergodicity and the existence of moments are established and the consistency and asymptotic normality of the conditional least squares estimator are proved. Simulation experiments are carried out to assess the performance of the model. The analyses of real data sets illustrate the flexibility and usefulness of the RRINARCH model for obtaining more realistic forecast means and variances.  相似文献

In this work, we discuss the class of bilinear GARCH (BL-GARCH) models that are capable of capturing simultaneously two key properties of non-linear time series: volatility clustering and leverage effects. It has often been observed that the marginal distributions of such time series have heavy tails; thus we examine the BL-GARCH model in a general setting under some non-normal distributions. We investigate some probabilistic properties of this model and we conduct a Monte Carlo experiment to evaluate the small-sample performance of the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) methodology for various models. Finally, within-sample estimation properties were studied using S&P 500 daily returns, when the features of interest manifest as volatility clustering and leverage effects. The main results suggest that the Student-t BL-GARCH seems highly appropriate to describe the S&P 500 daily returns.  相似文献

The value at risk (VaR) is a risk measure that is widely used by financial institutions to allocate risk. VaR forecast estimation involves the evaluation of conditional quantiles based on the currently available information. Recent advances in VaR evaluation incorporate conditional variance into the quantile estimation, which yields the conditional autoregressive VaR (CAViaR) models. However, uncertainty with regard to model selection in CAViaR model estimators raises the issue of identifying the better quantile predictor via averaging. In this study, we propose a quasi-Bayesian model averaging method that generates combinations of conditional VaR estimators based on single CAViaR models. This approach provides us a basis for comparing single CAViaR models against averaged ones for their ability to forecast VaR. We illustrate this method using simulated and financial daily return data series. The results demonstrate significant findings with regard to the use of averaged conditional VaR estimates when forecasting quantile risk.  相似文献

Previous time series applications of qualitative response models have ignored features of the data, such as conditional heteroscedasticity, that are routinely addressed in time series econometrics of financial data. This article addresses this issue by adding Markov-switching heteroscedasticity to a dynamic ordered probit model of discrete changes in the bank prime lending rate and estimating via the Gibbs sampler. The dynamic ordered probit model of Eichengreen, Watson, and Grossman allows for serial autocorrelation in probit analysis of a time series, and this article demonstrates the relative simplicity of estimating a dynamic ordered probit using the Gibbs sampler instead of the Eichengreen et al. maximum likelihood procedure. In addition, the extension to regime-switching parameters and conditional heteroscedasticity is easy to implement under Gibbs sampling. The article compares tests of goodness of fit between dynamic ordered probit models of the prime rate that have constant variance and conditional heteroscedasticity.  相似文献

This article is concerned with how the bootstrap can be applied to study conditional forecast error distributions and construct prediction regions for future observations in periodic time-varying state-space models. We derive, first, an algorithm for assessing the precision of quasi-maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters. As a result, the derived algorithm is exploited for numerically evaluating the conditional forecast accuracy of a periodic time series model expressed in state space form. We propose a method which requires the backward, or reverse-time, representation of the model for assessing conditional forecast errors. Finally, the small sample properties of the proposed procedures will be investigated by some simulation studies. Furthermore, we illustrate the results by applying the proposed method to a real time series.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper introduces a multiscale Gaussian convolution model of Gaussian mixture (MGC-GMM) via the convolution of the GMM and a multiscale Gaussian window function. It is found that the MGC-GMM is still a Gaussian mixture model, and its parameters can be mapped back to the parameters of the GMM. Meanwhile, the multiscale probability density function (MPDF) of the MGC-GMM can be viewed as the mathematical expectation of a random process induced by the Gaussian window function and the GMM, which can be directly estimated by the use of sample data. Based on the estimated MPDF, a novel algorithm denoted by the MGC is proposed for the selection of model and the parameter estimates of the GMM, where the component number and the means of the GMM are respectively determined by the number and the locations of the maximum points of the MPDF, and the numerical algorithms for the weight and variance parameters of the GMM are derived. The MGC is suitable for the GMM with diagonal covariance matrices. A MGC-EM algorithm is also presented for the generalized GMM, where the GMM is estimated using the EM algorithm by taking the estimates from the MGC as initial parameters of the GMM model. The proposed algorithms are tested via a series of simulated sample sets from the given GMM models, and the results show that the proposed algorithms can effectively estimate the GMM model.  相似文献

The complete-data model that underlies an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm must have a parameter space that coincides with the parameter space of the observed-data model. Otherwise, maximization of the observed-data log-likelihood will be carried out over a space that does not coincide with the desired parameter space. In some contexts, however, a natural complete-data model may be defined only for parameter values within a subset of the observed-data parameter space. In this paper we discuss situations where this can still be useful if the complete-data model can be viewed as a member of a finite family of complete-data models that have parameter spaces which collectively cover the observed-data parameter space. Such a family of complete-data models defines a family of EM algorithms which together lead to a finite collection of constrained maxima of the observed-data log-likelihood. Maximization of the log-likelihood function over the full parameter space then involves identifying the constrained maximum that achieves the greatest log-likelihood value. Since optimization over a finite collection of candidates is referred to as combinatorial optimization, we refer to such a family of EM algorithms as a combinatorial EM (CEM) algorithm. As well as discussing the theoretical concepts behind CEM algorithms, we discuss strategies for improving the computational efficiency when the number of complete-data models is large. Various applications of CEM algorithms are also discussed, ranging from simple examples that illustrate the concepts, to more substantive examples that demonstrate the usefulness of CEM algorithms in practice.  相似文献

Nonlinear recursive estimation of volatility via estimating functions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For certain volatility models, the conditional moments that depend on the parameter are of interest. Following Godambe and Heyde (1987), the combined estimating function method has been used to study inference when the conditional mean and conditional variance are functions of the parameter of interest (See Ghahramani and Thavaneswaran [Combining Estimating Functions for Volatility. Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, 2009, 139, 1449-1461] for details). However, for application purposes, the resulting estimates are nonlinear functions of the observations and no closed form expressions of the estimates are available. As an alternative, in this paper, a recursive estimation approach based on the combined estimating function is proposed and applied to various classes of time series models, including certain volatility models.  相似文献

This paper considers quantile regression for a wide class of time series models including autoregressive and moving average (ARMA) models with asymmetric generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity errors. The classical mean‐variance models are reinterpreted as conditional location‐scale models so that the quantile regression method can be naturally geared into the considered models. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the quantile regression estimator is established in location‐scale time series models under mild conditions. In the application of this result to ARMA‐generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity models, more primitive conditions are deduced to obtain the asymptotic properties. For illustration, a simulation study and a real data analysis are provided.  相似文献

A common practice in time series analysis is to fit a centered model to the mean-corrected data set. For stationary autoregressive moving-average (ARMA) processes, as far as the parameter estimation is concerned, fitting an ARMA model without intercepts to the mean-corrected series is asymptotically equivalent to fitting an ARMA model with intercepts to the observed series. We show that, related to the parameter least squares estimation of periodic ARMA models, the second approach can be arbitrarily more efficient than the mean-corrected counterpart. This property is illustrated by means of a periodic first-order autoregressive model. The asymptotic variance of the estimators for both approaches is derived. Moreover, empirical experiments based on simulations investigate the finite sample properties of the estimators.  相似文献

This paper examines the formation of maximum likelihood estimates of cell means in analysis of variance problems for cells with missing observations. Methods of estimating the means for missing cells has a long history which includes iterative maximum likelihood techniques, approximation techniques and ad hoc techniques. The use of the EM algorithm to form maximum likelihood estimates has resolved most of the issues associated with this problem. Implementation of the EM algorithm entails specification of a reduced model. As demonstrated in this paper, when there are several missing cells, it is possible to specify a reduced model that results in an unidentifiable likelihood. The EM algorithm in this case does not converge, although the slow divergence may often be mistaken by the unwary as convergence. This paper presents a simple matrix method of determining whether or not the reduced model results in an identifiable likelihood, and consequently in an EM algorithm that converges. We also show the EM algorithm in this case to be equivalent to a method which yields a closed form solution.  相似文献

We provide a comprehensive analysis of the out-of-sample performance of a wide variety of spot rate models in forecasting the probability density of future interest rates. Although the most parsimonious models perform best in forecasting the conditional mean of many financial time series, we find that the spot rate models that incorporate conditional heteroscedasticity and excess kurtosis or heavy tails have better density forecasts. Generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity significantly improves the modeling of the conditional variance and kurtosis, whereas regime switching and jumps improve the modeling of the marginal density of interest rates. Our analysis shows that the sophisticated spot rate models in the existing literature are important for applications involving density forecasts of interest rates.  相似文献

New techniques for the analysis of stochastic volatility models in which the logarithm of conditional variance follows an autoregressive model are developed. A cyclic Metropolis algorithm is used to construct a Markov-chain simulation tool. Simulations from this Markov chain converge in distribution to draws from the posterior distribution enabling exact finite-sample inference. The exact solution to the filtering/smoothing problem of inferring about the unobserved variance states is a by-product of our Markov-chain method. In addition, multistep-ahead predictive densities can be constructed that reflect both inherent model variability and parameter uncertainty. We illustrate our method by analyzing both daily and weekly data on stock returns and exchange rates. Sampling experiments are conducted to compare the performance of Bayes estimators to method of moments and quasi-maximum likelihood estimators proposed in the literature. In both parameter estimation and filtering, the Bayes estimators outperform these other approaches.  相似文献

This study considers a goodness-of-fit test for location-scale time series models with heteroscedasticity, including a broad class of generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic-type models. In financial time series analysis, the correct identification of model innovations is crucial for further inferences in diverse applications such as risk management analysis. To implement a goodness-of-fit test, we employ the residual-based entropy test generated from the residual empirical process. Since this test often shows size distortions and is affected by parameter estimation, its bootstrap version is considered. It is shown that the bootstrap entropy test is weakly consistent, and thereby its usage is justified. A simulation study and data analysis are conducted by way of an illustration.  相似文献

A popular approach to estimation based on incomplete data is the EM algorithm. For categorical data, this paper presents a simple expression of the observed data log-likelihood and its derivatives in terms of the complete data for a broad class of models and missing data patterns. We show that using the observed data likelihood directly is easy and has some advantages. One can gain considerable computational speed over the EM algorithm and a straightforward variance estimator is obtained for the parameter estimates. The general formulation treats a wide range of missing data problems in a uniform way. Two examples are worked out in full.  相似文献
