Summary To elucidate the basic food requirement of spiders, the important polyphagous predators of rice-plant insect pests, an attempt was made to measure the respiratory energy loss of fasting spiders,Lycosa pseudoannulata. Relationship between fresh (y) and dry (x) weights of spiders inhabiting the bottom layer of the rice-plant community was represented by the following allometric equation:y=0.428x 0.872. The carbon dioxide production by previously fed and unfed females under the dark at 29°C 100% R. H. was measured by a titration technique. The relationship between fresh body weight and CO2 production by unfed animals could be represented by the equationM=aW b, M being the CO2 output per individual per day andW the fresh body weight. The constantb, which determines the slope of curve, was 0.808. Respiration of the adult female with 100 mg fresh weight was 1.155±0.250 mg CO2/100 g fresh weight/day or 48.69 mg CO2/g dry weight/day. This value corresponds to 35.81 cal/g fresh weight/day or 150.94 cal/g dry weight/day. Supposing the calorific content of spiders to be 5820 cal/g dry weight, rate of the respiratory energy loss to total energy of the body was estimated to be 2.60%. This rate did not strongly contradict with the loss of fresh body weight before and after the measurement. The metabolic rate showed remarkable fluctuation with changing food supply. The CO2 production of starved individuals decreased to 83.63±16.34% as compared with individuals which were fed before the measurement.  相似文献

Summary Effects of starvation on the suryival period and the respiratory rate in adults of a wolf spider,Pardosa astrigera (L. Koch), were investigated. The spiders used were divided into four groups: well-fed, starved and two limited food groups; in the latter two, each spider was supplied with one leafhopper every second or third day. Adult males and females ofP. astrigera could survive for a long time; 28.8±2.7 days and 54.4±18.9 days, respectively, without any food. The longevities shown here were 73.8% for males and 78.6% for females of those of well-fed spiders, indicating thatP. astrigera adults have a strong tolerance to starvation. The respiratory rate of well-fed adults showed no tendency to increase or decrease with their aging; the mean respiratory rates were 4.86×10−4 mg CO2/mg f.w. (fresh body weight)/hr for males and 3.80×10−4 mg CO2/mg f.w./hr for females. The respiratory rates of starved spiders increased during the first two days of starvation but decreased markedly from the third to the twelfth day, and thereafter retained an almost constant level for each sex. The mean respiratory rates after the twelfth day of starvation were 2.49×10−4 mg CO2/mg f.w./hr for males and 2.76×10−4 mg CO2/mg f.w./hr for females; these values were respectively 48.4% and 63.0% of those prior to starvation. The fresh body weight of starved spiders decreased linearly with time but the rate was small. The respiratory rates of the limited food groups tended to decline with time and thereby their weight losses were minimized. The decrease in the respiratory rate under starvation was considered not to be due to spider exhaustion or senescence but due to an intrinsic change in behaviour and/or metabolism, because when the spiders were supplied with ample food for five days after starvation, the respiratory rate and the body weight rapidly recovered to near the levels prior to starvation. It is suggested that starved spiders use a higher ratio of fat as catabolic substrate than normally fed or satiated ones. Feeding strategies of poikilo-therm predators are discussed. Summary Nymphs ofAgriosphodrus dohrni Signoret (Reduviidae) have a strong gregariousness and show group predatory behavior. This study was conducted to clarify adaptive significance of group predation of this species, including laboratory observations and 6-year field surveys. In the laboratory, observations on both solitary and group attacking against armyworms were made at varying prey size classes to compare the capture success rate by solitary predators with that by groups. The efficiency in capturing the prey was significantly higher in group attacking at any prey size class compared. Data obtained from the field surveys indicated the tnedency for searching nymphs to feed in group and to increase the number of predators feeding per prey item with increasing prey size. Average sizes of prey captured were also larger in group feeding throughout the nymphal stage. In particular, it was remarkable that, when prey were “creeping” types, the upper size limit of prey eaten was dramatically increased.  相似文献

Summary The basic components of the predation ofPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot feeding upon eggs ofTetranychus urticae Koch were studied in an open system where the predator could disperse freely. The type of the functional response of the predator to the density of its prey was the same as that studied so far in a closed system, i.e.,Holling's Type 2. The search rate of the predator, however, was much lower in comparison with the result from a closed system. The oviposition of the predator per day was only weakly related to prey densities higher than 10 per leaf disc. But the emigration rate was inversely dependent upon the initial prey density up to 60 per leaf disc. The searching behaviour of the predator was influenced by both the web density spun byT. urticae and the density of the prey: the predator searched for its prey intensively only after it had contact with web. Mutual interference was observed in prey consumption, but not in the emigration rate. The emigration rate was largely dependent upon the prey density available per predator.  相似文献

Summary The frequency distribution of the number of nymphs per hill of rice plant were analyzed for three species of rice leaf- and planthoppers,Nilaparvata lugens, Delphacodes striatella and Nephotettix cincticeps, based on the sampling data obtained during their last generations in the paddy field. For every species concerned, individual distributions were proved to be contagious and to fit well to the negative binomial distribution. Further, it was found that the value of negative binomial parameterk is so stable for same species that a single value ofk is applicable for a series of counts with different means, whereas thatk differs remarkably among different species: if the reciprocal of the weighted estimate of commonk which is an adequate index measuring degree of contagiousness of the distribution, is compared among different species, it is higher in the order ofNilaparvata, Delphacodes andNephotettix. The ecological and practical implication of constancy and heterogeneity within and among species was discussed respectively as to the value of parameterk.  相似文献

Summary Two experiments on the nymphal predation ofPodisus maculiventris were conducted usingSpodoptera litura larvae as prey. First experiment: The predator nymphs divided into three groups were reared individually from second instar to adult in a small vessel. Each nymph in the groups 1, 2 and 3 was allowed to attack the serially growing larvae (these were supplied at the rate of one per day) from 3-, 5- and 7-day old after hatching, respectively. The first prey used for the group 1 was so small that it was not only insufficient to satiate the predator but also was difficult to be searched out. But these disadvantages were soon recuperated due to the rapid growth of the prey and all nymphs could survive to adults. The survival rate of third and fourth instar nymphs in the group 3 was severely affected by vigorous counterattack of older prey larvae. Second experiment: The predator nymphs were individually reared either in a small vessel or in a large one at various rates of food supply (the prey larvae of 7-day old were used). The functional response curves obtained for each instar of the predator took a saturation type within a certain range of the prey density. The saturation level specific to each instar was generally higher for the predator reared in the large vessel than in the small one. The functional response of fourth and fifth instar nymphs was accelerated at a high prey density,viz. 16 larvae per vessel. Even at the low rate of food supply,viz. one larva per day per predator, the predator nymphs could survive to adults, but the size of resultant adults were abnormally small.  相似文献

Summary Using a relationship between prey consumption and growth rate, field prey consumption of adults ofParatenodera angustipennis (S.) in a paddy field was estimated. Since a great number of grasshoppers (Oxya japonica) lived in the research area and the mantids had frequently eatenO. japonica, we presumed that they consumed onlyO. japonica. As a result, it was estimated that average prey consumptions for 6 days were 406 mg for the females and 23 mg for the males. From the result of this estimation and the feeding rhythm of the mantids, it is concluded that each female captured one grasshopper on average every a few days. By comparing this actual feeding level ofP. angustipennis with those of other predacious arthropods, characteristics ofP. angustipennis as a predator were discussed.  相似文献

Summary Functional responses of the wolf spider,Pardosa pseudoannulata (Boesenberg et Strand) attacking the rice brown planthopper,Nilaparvata lugens (St?l.), and the mirid predatorCyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter were both those of Holling Type II. The attack rate was higher and handling time lower forC. lividipennis. However, when caged with the two prey, the wolf spider showed a significant preference forN. lugens at a lower prey proportion. Proportions of prey attacked were significantly different from the expected ratios of prey available as well as from the predicted preferences derived from the functional response parameters. As proportions ofN. lugens attacked changed from greater to less than expected as the proportions ofN. lugens available increased, a “reverse switch” behaviour seems to be evident.  相似文献

Summary Mean daily food consumption and total lifetime food consumption of the spider,Nephila clavata, were estimated in natural populations. Daily food consumption in the late adult stage was 27–150 mg wet weight, which was nearly equivalent or slightly larger than that in other large web-building spiders. Considerable variation in food consumption was found among habitats or years. The largest variation among habitats in the same year was 7 and 5 fold for daily and lifetime consumption, respectively, while that among years in the same habitat was 3.5 and 2.5 for daily and lifetime consumption, respectively. Feeding conditions evaluated from the food consumption per body weight of spiders declined during the period from mid-July to mid-September in almost all the populations, which suggested that they faced to severe food limitation in this period.  相似文献

Summary Rufous turtle dove,Streptopelia orientalis, coming to the soybean field entered it from the outer part to eat soybean cotyledons. As a result, the injured plants extended from the outer to inner parts in the field. A model expressing these behaviours was constructed here, by assuming that the amount of food birds can eat in one block determines whether they stay there or move into neighbour block. As the food decrease due to exploitation of them by birds, birds enter into farther parts with the passage of time. The rate of feeding in all visiting birds (an 0 wherea is the rate of feeding per individual andn 0 the number of birds visiting) and the rate of staying at a block,b, was estimated from the field experimental results, using the above model. The value ofan 0 fluctuated greatly, depending upon the season in which soybean seeds sowed. The value ofb also fluctuated inversely with that ofan 0, suggesting the the staying rate decreases with an increase in the number of doves coming, probably because of interference among individuals.  相似文献

Summary Long-term variation in recruitment was estimated by constructing projection matrices for a marine bivalve,Yoldia notabilis, at two stations in Otsuchi Bay, northeastern Japan, and the effects of its variation on population dynamics were examined using a simple matrix model. The matrix model was developed from the Leslie matrix, in which the population growth rate λ was expressed as a function of recruitment rater 0. The equilibrium recruitment rater s, or the recruitment rate required to maintain population at constant size (λ=1), was expressed by the reciprocal of the reproductive value of a newly recruited individual. The estimates ofr s for the field population were lower at the shallower station than at the deeper station, reflecting higher survivorship and fecundity. Past recruitment rate estimated both by the field samplings for 3 years and by the back-calculation from the current age structure for over 10 years showed large yearly variation, ranging between 0 and 58.6×10−4. The estimates were larger thanr s, and hence, large enough to increase population size (λ>1) only in approximately one-third of the estimated years. This suggests that the population has been maintained by occasional successful recruitment occurring once every few years.  相似文献

Summary A predator-prey system involvingLycosa pseudoannulata as predators and both the green rice leafhopper,Nephotettix cincticeps and the brown planthopper,Nilaparvata lugens as prey was studied in an experimental paddy field. Daily predation rates on the prey and weekly disappearance rates ofLycosa females were related to densities of both predators and prey by multiple regression. Summary This paper theoretically analyses the relationship between surplus energy, which is available for either somatic growth or reproduction, and body weight. From the data of metabolism and growth of the biwamasu,Oncorhynchus rhodurus, obtained by Miura et al., a Bernoulli's differential equation is induced to represent the relationship between body weight and the sum of surplus energy and active metabolic rate. Solving this equation gives the amount of surplus energy,f(Wx), as follows:f(Wx) = (αW x 1−γ1−γ)1/(1−γ)−Wx, in which α, β and γ are constants andW x is body weight at agex. The function is applied to ten fish populations and consequently it is found to be useful for a wider age range and a wider variety of fishes than the conventional function.  相似文献

Summary There are 4 species belonging to the wolf spiderPardosa amentata species group in Hokkaido. The 4 species have separately occurred in Hokkaido in general, but a few species have sometimes occurred together at the same sites. Their biology at the coexisting sites, with special reference to partitioning of space was studied.P. agraria mainly inhabited fields and occurred widely in Hokkaido.P. hokkaido, P. brebivulva andP. lugubris inhabited the vicinity of forests and occurred in southern Hokkaido and on the side of the Sea of Japan in Hokkaido, all over Hokkaido excent the side of the Sea of Japan in central Hokkaido, and the lowlands and highlands in northern and eastern Hokkaido and mainly the highlands in other regions, respectively. In eastern Hokkaido whereP. brevivulva andP. lugubris have coexisted, as the number of spiders detected and the number of localities of the former were less than those of the latter, it was concluded that the former occurred mainly in southern Hokkaido and the Hidaka region. In southern Hokkaido whereP. hokkaido andP. brevivulva have coexisted, few individuals of both species were collected together at the same sites, and they were distributed allotopically. In short, the partitioning of space among theP. amentata species group occurring in Hokkaido was clear. From investigations on the coexisting sites and some other reports, it was considered that food, life cycle and diel activity periodicity amongPardosa occurring in Hokkaido were similar to one another. This may be one of the causes of the clear space partitioning amongPardosa. SincePardosa is a raptorial predator that does not weave but wanders on the ground and uses space horizontally, available prey resource forPardosa would be limited. It was therefore conjectured that the spider would be prone to space segregation, even if the spider could segregate the other niche dimensions. The partitioning of space betweenP. agraria andP. hokkaido inhabiting distinct habitats was loose when it was compared with that between species inhabiting similar habitats. As most of the spiders observed in the overlapping areas were females with egg cocoons, which required little food, the reduced feeding was considered to have allowed the loose partitioning.  相似文献

Summary This paper discusses the analysis of selective predation experiments with two types of prey when the prey are not replaced after they have been removed by the predators. In an earlier paper (Manly et al., 1972) consideration was given to situations where the replication of experiments allows the estimation of standard errors from the experimental results; in the present paper a table of standard errors is given for a large range of experiments and replication is therefore no longer necessary. The standard errors were calculated on an electronic computer by solving the exact equations given in the earlier paper. The suggested method of analysis is illustrated using some data where the prey were red and yellow artificial ‘maggots’ and the predators were garden birds.  相似文献

The jump magnitudes have a beta distribution with support [0, lx ], where lx is the total number of survivors prior to the jump. The estimation method is maximum likelihood. Summary To express the degree of hunger during both of feeding and unfeeding periods of spiders, equations for the amount of ingestion and food disappearance from the gut were presented using three components: capacity of gut, rate of ingestion and rate of food disappearance. The degree of hunger was expressed by the rate of unfilled capacity of gut to the capacity of gut based on these equations. The rates of ingestion and food disappearance were estimated from the results of experiment with a wolf spider,Pardosa laura. The equations obtained well applied to the experimental result. By changing values of these rates, it was revealed that the ratio of rates of ingestion to food disappearance determine the amount of ingestion.  相似文献

Summary Utilization of patchy habitats by adult populations of threePieris butterflies,P. rapae, P. melete andP. napi was studied throughout the flight season in an area of their coexistence, about 3×1.5 km, in a farm village in the mountains in Inabu, Aichi Prefecture. Field study was by the mark-recapture method. Results were analyzed by dispersal distances and recapture duration decay curves for adults of different age-classes estimated on the basis of physical condition of their wings, together with supplementary information of daliy egg-laying rate of females, obtained in field cages. Sexually immature, mated femals ofP. rapae after teneral stage showed a migratory flight. On the other hand, reproductive females and all males ofP. rapae were strongly resident within suitable habitats, and reproductive females begun to lay eggs abundantly at sunny places of newly suitable areas within a short period.P. melete seemed to disperse gradually from emerged stites and females of this species continued to lay some constant numbers of eggs for more than ten days over a wider area.P. napi appeared more likeP. melete thanP. rapae. The habitats of the three species can be characterized as follows:P. rapae, temporary, continued for pre-reproductive females but localized for reproductive females and all males, and unstable;P. melete, permanent, widespread, and stable;P. napi, permanent, localized, and stable. The numbers of generations ofP. rapae, P. melete andP. napi were estimated to be about six, three and three, respectively. Seasonal fluctuations in the number of adults were influenced by the stability of their habitats, i. e., the population size fluctuated sharply inP. rapae, but it was much more stable inP. melete andP. napi. In view of these results, it can be said thatP. rapae fits the general characteristics of a r-strategist whereasP. melete andP. napi are more K-strategic thanP. rapae.  相似文献

Summary A model was made to clarify the basic processes of competition to occur among larvae by the exploitation as defined byBakker (1969). It was found that this model is applicable to the experimental results on the food exploitation amongDroshophila larvae obtained byBakker (1961). In the model the preimaginal stage is divided into two periods;T f which is the time that a group of larvae spends in exhausting the food after hatching, andT s which is the duration of the starvation period afterT f .T f and thenW l (larval body weight) just after the end ofT f are decided byF s (amount of food supplied per larva at larval hatching) andF c (amount of food consumed per larva).T f affects on the onset ofT s as well asR l (rate of decrease in the individual body weight duringT s ).W a (weight of emerging adults) is gotten by a subtraction ofR l fromW l just after the end ofT f ,R e is affected directly by these components ofW l andR l . As a result,W a andR e are expressed by functions ofF s . This model confirmed that the food exploitation lead to the competition of scramble type.
