In this paper, we show that proportions of observations that fall into a random region determined by a given Borel set and a central order statistic converge almost surely, provided that the corresponding population quantile is unique. We also describe three types of possible asymptotic behaviour of these proportions in the case of non-unique population quantile. As an application of our findings we establish limiting properties of numbers of ties with a central order statistics in a discrete sample. Our results are derived not only for independent and identically distributed observations but more generally for strictly stationary and ergodic sequences of random variables.  相似文献

In this paper, we study asymptotic behavior of proportions of sample observations that fall into random regions determined by a given Borel set and an order statistic. We show that these proportions converge almost surely to some population quantities as the sample size increases to infinity. We derive our results for independent and identically distributed observations from an arbitrary cumulative distribution function, in particular, we allow samples drawn from discontinuous laws. We also give extensions of these results to the case of randomly indexed samples with some dependence between observations.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the numbers of observations in two-sided neighbourhoods of the kth and (n?r)th order statistics from a sample of size n and show that they are asymptotically independent as n→∞. We also establish a result that generalizes all the existing results regarding the asymptotic independence of numbers of observations in the left and right neighbourhoods of order statistics. Finally, we consider the limiting joint behaviour of numbers of observations in the neighbourhoods of s central order statistics and establish that they are asymptotically independent.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the limiting behavior of numbers of observations near an order statistic. We then derive an expression for the joint distribution of the numbers of observations that fall into the open right a-vicinity and left b-vicinity of k  th and (n-r)(n-r)th order statistics, respectively, from a sample of size n and establish the result that they are asymptotically independent under suitable conditions.  相似文献

In this paper we give some properties of the expected values of any order statistic when one of its adjacent order statistics is known (order mean function) from a sequence of sizen of independent and identically distributed random variables with discrete distribution. Furthermore, we obtain the explicit expressions of the distribution from these order mean functions, and finally, we show the necessary and sufficient conditions for any real function to be an order mean function. We also add some examples of characterization of discrete distributions from the order mean functions. Stochastic comparison on order statistics from heterogeneous-dependent observations has been paid lots of attention recently. This paper devotes to investigating the ordering properties of order statistics from dependent observations. We derive the usual stochastic order for sample minimums and the second smallest order statistic, the dispersive order and the star order for minimums of samples having proportional hazards and Archimedean survival copulas. Similar ordering results are also obtained for maximums and the second largest order statistic of samples having proportional reversed hazards and Archimedean copulas. Limit theorems are obtained for the numbers of observations in a random sample that fall within a left‐hand or right‐hand neighbourhood of the kth order statistic. The index k can be fixed, or tend to infinity as the sample size increases unboundedly. In essence, the proofs are applications of the classical Poisson and De Moivre–Laplace theorems.  相似文献

In this paper, we are interested in the joint distribution of two order statistics from overlapping samples. We give an explicit formula for the distribution of such a pair of random variables under the assumption that the parent distribution is absolutely continuous. We are also interested in the question to what extent conditional expectation of one of such order statistic given another determines the parent distribution. In particular, we provide a new characterization by linearity of regression of an order statistic from the extended sample given the one from the original sample, special case of which solves a problem explicitly stated in the literature. It appears that to describe the correct parent distribution it is convenient to use quantile density functions. In several other cases of regressions of order statistics we provide new results regarding uniqueness of the distribution in the sample.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the joint limiting behaviour of numbers of observations that fall into regions determined by order statistics and Borel sets. We show that suitably centred and normed versions of these numbers are asymptotically multivariate normal under some conditions. We consider two cases: one where the population distribution function is discontinuous and the other where it is continuous and the order statistics are extreme. Finally, we compare results obtained for the two cases with their analogues for absolutely continuous distribution function and central-order statistics.  相似文献

We observe s Independent samples, from unknown continuous distributions. The problem is to test the hypothesis that all the distributions are identical. The distribution of the numbers of observations from s-1 of the samples which fall in cells whose Boundaries are selected order statistics of the remaining sample, the number of cells increasing gradually with the sample sizes, is investigated. It is shown that under the null hypothesis and nearDy alternatives, as the sample sizes Increase these numbers of observations can be considered to be slightly rounded off normal random variables, the amount rounded off decreasing as sample sizes increase. Using these results, various tests of the hypothesis can be constructed and analyzed.  相似文献

In this paper, some results of Pakes and Steutel [1997. On the number of records near the maximum, Austral. J. Statist. 39, 179–193] on the properties of the numbers of near order statistic observations are extended to the case of progressively Type-II censored data. In this way, we introduce the notion of the numbers of near minimum observations under progressive censoring. We derive distributional and asymptotic results for them and discuss the notion of the “increasing” sample in the case of progressive censoring. Some applications for the spacings, associated with the order statistics from progressively Type-II censored samples, are also provided.  相似文献

Recently, a technique based on pseudo‐observations has been proposed to tackle the so‐called convex hull problem for the empirical likelihood statistic. The resulting adjusted empirical likelihood also achieves the high‐order precision of the Bartlett correction. Nevertheless, the technique induces an upper bound on the resulting statistic that may lead, in certain circumstances, to worthless confidence regions equal to the whole parameter space. In this paper, we show that suitable pseudo‐observations can be deployed to make each element of the generalized power divergence family Bartlett‐correctable and released from the convex hull problem. Our approach is conceived to achieve this goal by means of two distinct sets of pseudo‐observations with different tasks. An important effect of our formulation is to provide a solution that permits to overcome the problem of the upper bound. The proposal, which effectiveness is confirmed by simulation results, gives back attractiveness to a broad class of statistics that potentially contains good alternatives to the empirical likelihood.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider two problems concerning two independent progressively Type-II censored samples. We first consider the Pitman closeness (PC) of order statistics from two independent progressively censored samples to a specific population quantile. We then consider the point prediction of a future progressively censored order statistic and discuss the determination of the closest progressively censored order statistic from the current sample according to the simultaneous closeness probabilities. For both these problems, explicit expressions are derived for the pertinent PC probabilities, and then special cases are given as examples. For various censoring schemes, we also present numerical results for the standard uniform, standard exponential, and standard normal distributions. Finally, a distribution-free result for the median is obtained.  相似文献

In fitting regression model, one or more observations may have substantial effects on estimators. These unusual observations are precisely detected by a new diagnostic measure, Pena's statistic. In this article, we introduce a type of Pena's statistic for each point in Liu regression. Using the forecast change property, we simplify the Pena's statistic in a numerical sense. It is found that the simplified Pena's statistic behaves quite well as far as detection of influential observations is concerned. We express Pena's statistic in terms of the Liu leverages and residuals. The normality of this statistic is also discussed and it is demonstrated that it can identify a subset of high Liu leverage outliers. For numerical evaluation, simulated studies are given and a real data set has been analysed for illustration.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a test procedure to detect outliers in the one-parameter exponential distribution based on prediction. The distribution of the test statistic is obtained. The proposed test can be used to detect more than one outlier and the required percentage points can be easily determined. Furthermore, the test provides a simple procedure to detect whether a given set of data is free from outliers or spurious observations.  相似文献

In statistical process control one typically takes periodic small samples. Statistical inferences made from these samples often assume that the samples come from normal distributions with the means and variances possibly changing over time. A multisample test of normality is proposed to test this assumption. The test statistic is the generalized distance between the standardized order statistic vector averaged across the samples and its expected value under normality. The null distribution of the statistic approaches a chi-squared distribution as the number of samples increases. A Monte Carlo study suggests that the test has desirable power properties relative to competing tests.  相似文献

In a life-testing problem, it may be of interest to investigate the number of observations close to but greater than the median, minimum, or more generally, the ith progressively Type-II censored order statistic (PCOS-II). In this paper, we derive the probability mass and distribution functions of the number of observations greater than the ith PCOS-II for a system with identical components for the cases of independent as well as dependent components. The type of dependence considered among the component lifetimes is through an Archimedean copula. We also provide a goodness-of-fit method for determining the best copula model for a given PCOS-II. Finally, an example is provided to illustrate the results developed here.  相似文献

We introduce a uniform generalized order statistic process. It is a simple Markov process whose initial segment can be identified with a set of uniform generalized order statistics. A standard marginal transformation leads to a generalized order statistic process related to non-uniform generalized order statistics. It is then demonstrated that the nth variable in such a process has the same distribution as an nth Pfeifer record value. This process representation of Pfeifer records facilitates discussion of the possible limit laws for Pfeifer records and, in some cases, of sums thereof. Because of the close relationship between Pfeifer records and generalized order statistics, the results shed some light on the problem of determining the nature of the possible limiting distributions of the largest generalized order statistic.  相似文献

It is shown that if a binary regression function is increasing then retrospective sampling induces a stochastic ordering of the covariate distributions among the responders, which we call cases, and the non-responders, which we call controls. We also show that if the covariate distributions are stochastically ordered then the regression function must be increasing. This means that testing whether the regression function is monotone is equivalent to testing whether the covariate distributions are stochastically ordered. Capitalizing on these new probabilistic observations we proceed to develop two new non-parametric tests for stochastic order. The new tests are based on either the maximally selected, or integrated, chi-bar statistic of order one. The tests are easy to compute and interpret and their large sampling distributions are easily found. Numerical comparisons show that they compare favorably with existing methods in both small and large samples. We emphasize that the new tests are applicable to any testing problem involving two stochastically ordered distributions.  相似文献
