One of the greatest challenges related to the use of piecewise exponential models (PEMs) is to find an adequate grid of time-points needed in its construction. In general, the number of intervals in such a grid and the position of their endpoints are ad-hoc choices. We extend previous works by introducing a full Bayesian approach for the piecewise exponential model in which the grid of time-points (and, consequently, the endpoints and the number of intervals) is random. We estimate the failure rates using the proposed procedure and compare the results with the non-parametric piecewise exponential estimates. Estimates for the survival function using the most probable partition are compared with the Kaplan-Meier estimators (KMEs). A sensitivity analysis for the proposed model is provided considering different prior specifications for the failure rates and for the grid. We also evaluate the effect of different percentage of censoring observations in the estimates. An application to a real data set is also provided. We notice that the posteriors are strongly influenced by prior specifications, mainly for the failure rates parameters. Thus, the priors must be fairly built, say, really disclosing the expert prior opinion.

In many longitudinal studies multiple characteristics of each individual, along with time to occurrence of an event of interest, are often collected. In such data set, some of the correlated characteristics may be discrete and some of them may be continuous. In this paper, a joint model for analysing multivariate longitudinal data comprising mixed continuous and ordinal responses and a time to event variable is proposed. We model the association structure between longitudinal mixed data and time to event data using a multivariate zero-mean Gaussian process. For modeling discrete ordinal data we assume a continuous latent variable follows the logistic distribution and for continuous data a Gaussian mixed effects model is used. For the event time variable, an accelerated failure time model is considered under different distributional assumptions. For parameter estimation, a Bayesian approach using Markov Chain Monte Carlo is adopted. The performance of the proposed methods is illustrated using some simulation studies. A real data set is also analyzed, where different model structures are used. Model comparison is performed using a variety of statistical criteria.

Joint modeling of associated mixed biomarkers in longitudinal studies leads to a better clinical decision by improving the efficiency of parameter estimates. In many clinical studies, the observed time for two biomarkers may not be equivalent and one of the longitudinal responses may have recorded in a longer time than the other one. In addition, the response variables may have different missing patterns. In this paper, we propose a new joint model of associated continuous and binary responses by accounting different missing patterns for two longitudinal outcomes. A conditional model for joint modeling of the two responses is used and two shared random effects models are considered for intermittent missingness of two responses. A Bayesian approach using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is adopted for parameter estimation and model implementation. The validation and performance of the proposed model are investigated using some simulation studies. The proposed model is also applied for analyzing a real data set of bariatric surgery.

Bootstrap methods are proposed for estimating sampling distributions and associated statistics for regression parameters in multivariate survival data. We use an Independence Working Model (IWM) approach, fitting margins independently, to obtain consistent estimates of the parameters in the marginal models. Resampling procedures, however, are applied to an appropriate joint distribution to estimate covariance matrices, make bias corrections, and construct confidence intervals. The proposed methods allow for fixed or random explanatory variables, the latter case using extensions of existing resampling schemes (Loughin,1995), and they permit the possibility of random censoring. An application is shown for the viral positivity time data previously analyzed by Wei, Lin, and Weissfeld (1989). A simulation study of small-sample properties shows that the proposed bootstrap procedures provide substantial improvements in variance estimation over the robust variance estimator commonly used with the IWM. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

In this article, we consider shared frailty model with inverse Gaussian distribution as frailty distribution and log-logistic distribution (LLD) as baseline distribution for bivariate survival times. We fit this model to three real-life bivariate survival data sets. The problem of analyzing and estimating parameters of shared inverse Gaussian frailty is the interest of this article and then compare the results with shared gamma frailty model under the same baseline for considered three data sets. Data are analyzed using Bayesian approach to the analysis of clustered survival data in which there is a dependence of failure time observations within the same group. The variance component estimation provides the estimated dispersion of the random effects. We carried out a test for frailty (or heterogeneity) using Bayes factor. Model comparison is made using information criteria and Bayes factor. We observed that the shared inverse Gaussian frailty model with LLD as baseline is the better fit for all three bivariate data sets.

A random-effects transition model is proposed to model the economic activity status of household members. This model is introduced to take into account two kinds of correlations; one due to the longitudinal nature of the study, which will be considered using a transition parameter, and the other due to the existing correlation between responses of members of the same household which is taken into account by introducing random coefficients into the model. The results are presented based on the homogeneous (all parameters are not changed by time) and non-homogeneous Markov models with random coefficients. A Bayesian approach via the Gibbs sampling is used to perform parameter estimation. Results of using random-effects transition model are compared, using deviance information criterion, with those of three other models which exclude random effects and/or transition effects. It is shown that the full model gains more precision due to the consideration of all aspects of the process which generated the data. To illustrate the utility of the proposed model, a longitudinal data set which is extracted from the Iranian Labour Force Survey is analysed to explore the simultaneous effect of some covariates on the current economic activity as a nominal response. Also, some sensitivity analyses are performed to assess the robustness of the posterior estimation of the transition parameters to the perturbations of the prior parameters.

Typical joint modeling of longitudinal measurements and time to event data assumes that two models share a common set of random effects with a normal distribution assumption. But, sometimes the underlying population that the sample is extracted from is a heterogeneous population and detecting homogeneous subsamples of it is an important scientific question. In this paper, a finite mixture of normal distributions for the shared random effects is proposed for considering the heterogeneity in the population. For detecting whether the unobserved heterogeneity exits or not, we use a simple graphical exploratory diagnostic tool proposed by Verbeke and Molenberghs [34] to assess whether the traditional normality assumption for the random effects in the mixed model is adequate. In the joint modeling setting, in the case of evidence against normality (homogeneity), a finite mixture of normals is used for the shared random-effects distribution. A Bayesian MCMC procedure is developed for parameter estimation and inference. The methodology is illustrated using some simulation studies. Also, the proposed approach is used for analyzing a real HIV data set, using the heterogeneous joint model for this data set, the individuals are classified into two groups: a group with high risk and a group with moderate risk.

The U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics publishes monthly unemployment rate estimates for its 50 states, the District of Columbia, and all counties, under Current Population Survey. However, the unemployment rate estimates for some states are unreliable due to low sample sizes in these states. Datta et al. (1999) proposed a hierarchical Bayes (HB) method using a time series generalization of a widely used cross-sectional model in small-area estimation. However, the geographical variation is also likely to be important. To have an efficient model, a comprehensive mixed normal model that accounts for the spatial and temporal effects is considered. A HB approach using Markov chain Monte Carlo is used for the analysis of the U.S. state-level unemployment rate estimates for January 2004-December 2007. The sensitivity of such type of analysis to prior assumptions in the Gaussian context is also studied.

In this paper, a joint model for analyzing multivariate mixed ordinal and continuous responses, where continuous outcomes may be skew, is presented. For modeling the discrete ordinal responses, a continuous latent variable approach is considered and for describing continuous responses, a skew-normal mixed effects model is used. A Bayesian approach using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is adopted for parameter estimation. Some simulation studies are performed for illustration of the proposed approach. The results of the simulation studies show that the use of the separate models or the normal distributional assumption for shared random effects and within-subject errors of continuous and ordinal variables, instead of the joint modeling under a skew-normal distribution, leads to biased parameter estimates. The approach is used for analyzing a part of the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) data set. Annual income and life satisfaction are considered as the continuous and the ordinal longitudinal responses, respectively. The annual income variable is severely skewed, therefore, the use of the normality assumption for the continuous response does not yield acceptable results. The results of data analysis show that gender, marital status, educational levels and the amount of money spent on leisure have a significant effect on annual income, while marital status has the highest impact on life satisfaction.

The consistency of model selection criterion BIC has been well and widely studied for many nonlinear regression models. However, few of them had considered models with lag variables as regressors and auto-correlated errors in time series settings, which is common in both linear and nonlinear time series modeling. This paper studies a dynamic semi-varying coefficient model with ARMA errors, using an approach based on spectrum analysis of time series. The consistency property of the proposed model selection criteria is established and an implementation procedure of model selection is proposed for practitioners. Simulation studies have also been conducted to numerically show the consistency property.

Count data with excess zeros are widely encountered in the fields of biomedical, medical, public health and social survey, etc. Zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) regression models with mixed effects are useful tools for analyzing such data, in which covariates are usually incorporated in the model to explain inter-subject variation and normal distribution is assumed for both random effects and random errors. However, in many practical applications, such assumptions may be violated as the data often exhibit skewness and some covariates may be measured with measurement errors. In this paper, we deal with these issues simultaneously by developing a Bayesian joint hierarchical modeling approach. Specifically, by treating intercepts and slopes in logistic and Poisson regression as random, a flexible two-level ZIP regression model is proposed, where a covariate process with measurement errors is established and a skew-t-distribution is considered for both random errors and random effects. Under the Bayesian framework, model selection is carried out using deviance information criterion (DIC) and a goodness-of-fit statistics is also developed for assessing the plausibility of the posited model. The main advantage of our method is that it allows for more robustness and correctness for investigating heterogeneity from different levels, while accommodating the skewness and measurement errors simultaneously. An application to Shanghai Youth Fitness Survey is used as an illustrate example. Through this real example, it is showed that our approach is of interest and usefulness for applications.

In this article, small area estimation under a multivariate linear model for repeated measures data is considered. The proposed model aims to get a model which borrows strength both across small areas and over time. The model accounts for repeated surveys, grouped response units, and random effects variations. Estimation of model parameters is discussed within a likelihood based approach. Prediction of random effects, small area means across time points, and per group units are derived. A parametric bootstrap method is proposed for estimating the mean squared error of the predicted small area means. Results are supported by a simulation study.

In this paper, a generalized partially linear model (GPLM) with missing covariates is studied and a Monte Carlo EM (MCEM) algorithm with penalized-spline (P-spline) technique is developed to estimate the regression coefficients and nonparametric function, respectively. As classical model selection procedures such as Akaike's information criterion become invalid for our considered models with incomplete data, some new model selection criterions for GPLMs with missing covariates are proposed under two different missingness mechanism, say, missing at random (MAR) and missing not at random (MNAR). The most attractive point of our method is that it is rather general and can be extended to various situations with missing observations based on EM algorithm, especially when no missing data involved, our new model selection criterions are reduced to classical AIC. Therefore, we can not only compare models with missing observations under MAR/MNAR settings, but also can compare missing data models with complete-data models simultaneously. Theoretical properties of the proposed estimator, including consistency of the model selection criterions are investigated. A simulation study and a real example are used to illustrate the proposed methodology.

We Propose a Bayesian approach to chech the goodness of fit for time series regression models. The test statistics is proposed by Smith (1985) based on a sequence of random variables which are independently distributed standard normal if the model is correct. We estimate this sequence of random variables using several methods. The tests of goodness of fit are performed when either the error terms violate the Gaussian assumption, or the order is incorrect, or the model is misspecified. The methodology is illustrated using both a simulation study and three real date sets.

In this article, we utilize a scale mixture of Gaussian random field as a tool for modeling spatial ordered categorical data with non-Gaussian latent variables. In fact, we assume a categorical random field is created by truncating a Gaussian Log-Gaussian latent variable model to accommodate heavy tails. Since the traditional likelihood approach for the considered model involves high-dimensional integrations which are computationally intensive, the maximum likelihood estimates are obtained using a stochastic approximation expectation–maximization algorithm. For this purpose, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are employed to draw from the posterior distribution of latent variables. A numerical example illustrates the methodology.

We incorporate a random effect into a multivariate discrete proportional hazards model and propose an efficient semiparametric Bayesian estimation method. By introducing a prior process for the parameters of baseline hazards, we consider a nonparametric estimation of baseline hazards function. Using a state space representation, we derive a dynamic modeling of baseline hazards function and propose an efficient block sampler for Markov chain Monte Carlo method. A numerical example using kidney patients data is given.

The issue of estimating usual nutrient intake distributions and prevalence of inadequate nutrient intakes is of interest in nutrition studies. Box–Cox transformations coupled with the normal distribution are usually employed for modeling nutrient intake data. When the data present highly asymmetric distribution or include outliers, this approach may lead to implausible estimates. Additionally, it does not allow interpretation of the parameters in terms of characteristics of the original data and requires back transformation of the transformed data to the original scale. This paper proposes an alternative approach for estimating usual nutrient intake distributions and prevalence of inadequate nutrient intakes through a Box–Cox t model with random intercept. The proposed model is flexible enough for modeling highly asymmetric data even when outliers are present. Unlike the usual approach, the proposed model does not require a transformation of the data. A simulation study suggests that the Box–Cox t model with random intercept estimates the usual intake distribution satisfactorily, and that it should be preferable to the usual approach particularly in cases of highly asymmetric heavy-tailed data. In applications to data sets on intake of 19 micronutrients, the Box–Cox t models provided better fit than its competitors in most of the cases.

We propose a flexible model approach for the distribution of random effects when both response variables and covariates have non-ignorable missing values in a longitudinal study. A Bayesian approach is developed with a choice of nonparametric prior for the distribution of random effects. We apply the proposed method to a real data example from a national long-term survey by Statistics Canada. We also design simulation studies to further check the performance of the proposed approach. The result of simulation studies indicates that the proposed approach outperforms the conventional approach with normality assumption when the heterogeneity in random effects distribution is salient.
