Abstract. We investigate non‐parametric estimation of a monotone baseline hazard and a decreasing baseline density within the Cox model. Two estimators of a non‐decreasing baseline hazard function are proposed. We derive the non‐parametric maximum likelihood estimator and consider a Grenander type estimator, defined as the left‐hand slope of the greatest convex minorant of the Breslow estimator. We demonstrate that the two estimators are strongly consistent and asymptotically equivalent and derive their common limit distribution at a fixed point. Both estimators of a non‐increasing baseline hazard and their asymptotic properties are obtained in a similar manner. Furthermore, we introduce a Grenander type estimator for a non‐increasing baseline density, defined as the left‐hand slope of the least concave majorant of an estimator of the baseline cumulative distribution function, derived from the Breslow estimator. We show that this estimator is strongly consistent and derive its asymptotic distribution at a fixed point.  相似文献

We deal with smoothed estimators for conditional probability functions of discrete-valued time series { Yt } under two different settings. When the conditional distribution of Yt given its lagged values falls in a parametric family and depends on exogenous random variables, a smoothed maximum (partial) likelihood estimator for the unknown parameter is proposed. While there is no prior information on the distribution, various nonparametric estimation methods have been compared and the adjusted Nadaraya–Watson estimator stands out as it shares the advantages of both Nadaraya–Watson and local linear regression estimators. The asymptotic normality of the estimators proposed has been established in the manner of sparse asymptotics, which shows that the smoothed methods proposed outperform their conventional, unsmoothed, parametric counterparts under very mild conditions. Simulation results lend further support to this assertion. Finally, the new method is illustrated via a real data set concerning the relationship between the number of daily hospital admissions and the levels of pollutants in Hong Kong in 1994–1995. An ad hoc model selection procedure based on a local Akaike information criterion is proposed to select the significant pollutant indices.  相似文献

The computation of the renewal function when the distribution function is completely known has received much attention in the literature. However, in many cases the form of the distribution function is unknown and has to be estimated nonparametrically. A nonparametric estimator for the renewal function for complete data was suggested by Frees (1986). In many cases, however, censoring of the lifetime might occur. We shall present parametric and nonparametric estimators of the renewal function based on censored data. In a simulation study we compare the nonparametric estimators with parametric estimators for the Weibull and lognormal distribution. The study suggests that the nonparametric estimator is a viable alternative to the parametric estimators when the lifetime distribution is unknown. Also, the nonparametric estimator is computationally simpler than the parametric estimator.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the estimation of partially linear additive quantile regression models where the conditional quantile function comprises a linear parametric component and a nonparametric additive component. We propose a two-step estimation approach: in the first step, we approximate the conditional quantile function using a series estimation method. In the second step, the nonparametric additive component is recovered using either a local polynomial estimator or a weighted Nadaraya–Watson estimator. Both consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators are established. Particularly, we show that the first-stage estimator for the finite-dimensional parameters attains the semiparametric efficiency bound under homoskedasticity, and that the second-stage estimators for the nonparametric additive component have an oracle efficiency property. Monte Carlo experiments are conducted to assess the finite sample performance of the proposed estimators. An application to a real data set is also illustrated.  相似文献

Extreme-value copulas arise in the asymptotic theory for componentwise maxima of independent random samples. An extreme-value copula is determined by its Pickands dependence function, which is a function on the unit simplex subject to certain shape constraints that arise from an integral transform of an underlying measure called spectral measure. Multivariate extensions are provided of certain rank-based nonparametric estimators of the Pickands dependence function. The shape constraint that the estimator should itself be a Pickands dependence function is enforced by replacing an initial estimator by its best least-squares approximation in the set of Pickands dependence functions having a discrete spectral measure supported on a sufficiently fine grid. Weak convergence of the standardized estimators is demonstrated and the finite-sample performance of the estimators is investigated by means of a simulation experiment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article is concerned with some parametric and nonparametric estimators for the k-fold convolution of a distribution function. An alternative estimator is proposed and its unbiasedness, asymptotic unbiasedness, and consistency properties are investigated. The asymptotic normality of this estimator is established. Some applications of the estimator are given in renewal processes. Finally, the computational procedures are described and the relative performance of these estimators for small sample sizes is investigated by a simulation study.  相似文献

We develop a novel nonparametric likelihood ratio test for independence between two random variables using a technique that is free of the common constraints of defining a given set of specific dependence structures. Our methodology revolves around an exact density-based empirical likelihood ratio test statistic that approximates in a distribution-free fashion the corresponding most powerful parametric likelihood ratio test. We demonstrate that the proposed test is very powerful in detecting general structures of dependence between two random variables, including nonlinear and/or random-effect dependence structures. An extensive Monte Carlo study confirms that the proposed test is superior to the classical nonparametric procedures across a variety of settings. The real-world applicability of the proposed test is illustrated using data from a study of biomarkers associated with myocardial infarction. In this paper, we propose and evaluate the performance of different parametric and nonparametric estimators for the population coefficient of variation considering Ranked Set Sampling (RSS) under normal distribution. The performance of the proposed estimators was assessed based on the bias and relative efficiency provided by a Monte Carlo simulation study. An application in anthropometric measurements data from a human population is also presented. The results showed that the proposed estimators via RSS present an expressively lower mean squared error when compared to the usual estimator, obtained via Simple Random Sampling. Also, it was verified the superiority of the maximum likelihood estimator, given the necessary assumptions of normality and perfect ranking are met.  相似文献

Single index models are natural extensions of linear models and overcome the so-called curse of dimensionality. They are very useful for longitudinal data analysis. In this paper, we develop a new efficient estimation procedure for single index models with longitudinal data, based on Cholesky decomposition and local linear smoothing method. Asymptotic normality for the proposed estimators of both the parametric and nonparametric parts will be established. Monte Carlo simulation studies show excellent finite sample performance. Furthermore, we illustrate our methods with a real data example.  相似文献

Vardi’s Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is frequently used for computing the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator of length-biased right-censored data, which does not admit a closed-form representation. The EM algorithm may converge slowly, particularly for heavily censored data. We studied two algorithms for accelerating the convergence of the EM algorithm, based on iterative convex minorant and Aitken’s delta squared process. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the acceleration algorithms converge more rapidly than the EM algorithm in terms of number of iterations and actual timing. The acceleration method based on a modification of Aitken’s delta squared performed the best under a variety of settings.  相似文献

Partially linear additive model is useful in statistical modelling as a multivariate nonparametric fitting technique. This paper considers statistical inference for the semiparametric model in the presence of multicollinearity. Based on the profile least-squares (PL) approach and Liu estimation method, we propose a PL Liu estimator for the parametric component. When some additional linear restrictions on the parametric component are available, the corresponding restricted Liu estimator for the parametric component is constructed. The properties of the proposed estimators are derived. Some simulations are conducted to assess the performance of the proposed procedures and the results are satisfactory. Finally, a real data example is analysed.  相似文献

This article is concerned with the problem of multicollinearity in the linear part of a seemingly unrelated semiparametric (SUS) model. It is also suspected that some additional non stochastic linear constraints hold on the whole parameter space. In the sequel, we propose semiparametric ridge and non ridge type estimators combining the restricted least squares methods in the model under study. For practical aspects, it is assumed that the covariance matrix of error terms is unknown and thus feasible estimators are proposed and their asymptotic distributional properties are derived. Also, necessary and sufficient conditions for the superiority of the ridge-type estimator over the non ridge type estimator for selecting the ridge parameter K are derived. Lastly, a Monte Carlo simulation study is conducted to estimate the parametric and nonparametric parts. In this regard, kernel smoothing and cross validation methods for estimating the nonparametric function are used.  相似文献

Maximum pseudolikelihood (MPL) estimators are useful alternatives to maximum likelihood (ML) estimators when likelihood functions are more difficult to manipulate than their marginal and conditional components. Furthermore, MPL estimators subsume a large number of estimation techniques including ML estimators, maximum composite marginal likelihood estimators, and maximum pairwise likelihood estimators. When considering only the estimation of discrete models (on a possibly countably infinite support), we show that a simple finiteness assumption on an entropy-based measure is sufficient for assessing the consistency of the MPL estimator. As a consequence, we demonstrate that the MPL estimator of any discrete model on a bounded support will be consistent. Our result is valid in parametric, semiparametric, and nonparametric settings.  相似文献

Summary.  We consider the problem of estimating the proportion of true null hypotheses, π 0, in a multiple-hypothesis set-up. The tests are based on observed p -values. We first review published estimators based on the estimator that was suggested by Schweder and Spjøtvoll. Then we derive new estimators based on nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation of the p -value density, restricting to decreasing and convex decreasing densities. The estimators of π 0 are all derived under the assumption of independent test statistics. Their performance under dependence is investigated in a simulation study. We find that the estimators are relatively robust with respect to the assumption of independence and work well also for test statistics with moderate dependence.  相似文献

Bandwidth plays an important role in determining the performance of nonparametric estimators, such as the local constant estimator. In this article, we propose a Bayesian approach to bandwidth estimation for local constant estimators of time-varying coefficients in time series models. We establish a large sample theory for the proposed bandwidth estimator and Bayesian estimators of the unknown parameters involved in the error density. A Monte Carlo simulation study shows that (i) the proposed Bayesian estimators for bandwidth and parameters in the error density have satisfactory finite sample performance; and (ii) our proposed Bayesian approach achieves better performance in estimating the bandwidths than the normal reference rule and cross-validation. Moreover, we apply our proposed Bayesian bandwidth estimation method for the time-varying coefficient models that explain Okun’s law and the relationship between consumption growth and income growth in the U.S. For each model, we also provide calibrated parametric forms of the time-varying coefficients. This paper proposes nonparametric estimation methods for functional linear semiparametric quantile regression, where the conditional quantile of the scalar responses is modelled by both scalar and functional covariates and an additional unknown nonparametric function term. The slope function is estimated using the functional principal component basis and the nonparametric function is approximated by a piecewise polynomial function. The asymptotic distribution of the estimators of slope parameters is derived and the global convergence rate of the quantile estimator of unknown slope function is established under suitable norm. The asymptotic distribution of the estimator of the unknown nonparametric function is also established. Simulation studies are conducted to investigate the finite-sample performance of the proposed estimators. The proposed methodology is demonstrated by analysing a real data from ADHD-200 sample.  相似文献

Models are considered in which true lifetimes are generated by a Weibull regression model and measured lifetimes are determined from the true times by certain measurement error models. Adjusted estimators are obtained under one parametric specification. The bias properties of these estimators and standard estimators are compared both theoretically, using small measurement error asymptotics, and by simulation. The standard estimators of regression coefficients, other than the intercept, are bias-robust. The adjusted estimator of the shape parameter removes the bias of the standard estimator.  相似文献

This article considers Robins's marginal and nested structural models in the cross‐sectional setting and develops likelihood and regression estimators. First, a nonparametric likelihood method is proposed by retaining a finite subset of all inherent and modelling constraints on the joint distributions of potential outcomes and covariates under a correctly specified propensity score model. A profile likelihood is derived by maximizing the nonparametric likelihood over these joint distributions subject to the retained constraints. The maximum likelihood estimator is intrinsically efficient based on the retained constraints and weakly locally efficient. Second, two regression estimators, named hat and tilde, are derived as first‐order approximations to the likelihood estimator under the propensity score model. The tilde regression estimator is intrinsically and weakly locally efficient and doubly robust. The methods are illustrated by data analysis for an observational study on right heart catheterization. In this paper, we consider the estimation of both the parameters and the nonparametric link function in partially linear single‐index models for longitudinal data that may be unbalanced. In particular, a new three‐stage approach is proposed to estimate the nonparametric link function using marginal kernel regression and the parametric components with generalized estimating equations. The resulting estimators properly account for the within‐subject correlation. We show that the parameter estimators are asymptotically semiparametrically efficient. We also show that the asymptotic variance of the link function estimator is minimized when the working error covariance matrices are correctly specified. The new estimators are more efficient than estimators in the existing literature. These asymptotic results are obtained without assuming normality. The finite‐sample performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by simulation studies. In addition, two real‐data examples are analyzed to illustrate the methodology.  相似文献

It is well-known that multivariate curve estimation suffers from the curse of dimensionality. However, reasonable estimators are possible, even in several dimensions, under appropriate restrictions on the complexity of the curve. In the present paper we explore how much appropriate wavelet estimators can exploit a typical restriction on the curve such as additivity. We first propose an adaptive and simultaneous estimation procedure for all additive components in additive regression models and discuss rate of convergence results and data-dependent truncation rules for wavelet series estimators. To speed up computation we then introduce a wavelet version of functional ANOVA algorithm for additive regression models and propose a regularization algorithm which guarantees an adaptive solution to the multivariate estimation problem. Some simulations indicate that wavelets methods complement nicely the existing methodology for nonparametric multivariate curve estimation.  相似文献
