Reasons for Divorce:

A 27-item checklist of reasons for divorce was administered to 437 men and women divorcing in the mid-1980's. Factor analysis revealed nine dimensions underlying the checklist responses. The most frequently cited factors were unmet emotional needs/growing apart, lifestyle differences or boredom with the marriage, and high conflict, demeaning relationships. Statistically significant sex, age and socio-economic differences were found. Correlates between the factors and individual psychological functioning, parental functioning, and the emotional ambiance of the divorce reflected considerable diversity among the divorcing population and have implications for legal and mental health practice.

Training for Abusive Caregivers:

This article proposes a model for elder abuse intervention based on a recently implemented caregiver training program. Caregivers at-risk for abuse were offered traiing through mental health centers on biopsychocosil issues in aging, problem-solving, stress and anger management, and utilization of community resources. Participants were compared with similar caregivers on measures of psychosocial well-being to examine the efficacy of training. Participants experienced some reduction in symptoms of psychological distress and caregiving burden over time while symptoms worsened or remained unchanged for non-participants. Suggestions are made for utilizing this approach in cases of founded abuse.     

Research note: Monthly strategies for discretion: shopping for sanitary towels and tampons

Collected as part of a small-scale qualitative study of socio-cultural aspects of menstruation, interview data dealing with the task of buying sanitary towels and tampons are presented. They reveal a potentially embarrassing dilemma between an overarching requirement for discretion in menstrual matters and the necessity to ‘go public’ when shopping. Strategies for managing this dilemma form the substance of the paper.     

Parents: Dilemmas for Professionals

A professional critically examines her practices towards parents whilst an educational psychologist. Aspects of the power relationship are explored, including acting as a friend, the trappings of professionalism, privacy and confidentiality, interprofessional trust, and the provision of services. A tentative conclusion reached is that these create dilemmas which are part of the workings of the system within which the educational psychologist works, and that professional survival is the underlying motive.     

Organizing for Structural Reform:

Over the course of the past two decades, the New Jersey Tenants Organization (NJTO) has won significant structural reform for tenants. This article examines the history of NJTO's campaigns, organizing strategies, leadership structure, and organizational dynamics. This article also assesses the prospects for the future in today's economic and political climate.

Services for Aged Victims:

Little attention has been paid to the nature of service needs of elderly abuse victims, whether these needs are met, and the types of factors which are correlated with the service providers' decision as to what services to provide. This paper provides an analysis of services to elderly abuse victims using data from a study conducted by the Illinois Department on Aging. The report is based on data covering 204 cases which were collected during the calendar year 1986. Abuse types included: Physical Abuse, Confinement, Sexual Abuse, Deprivation, Neglect, Self Neglect, and Financial Exploitation. Case Management was the most frequent type of service the victims received, followed by Homemaking Assistance and Miscellaneous Legal Services. Self Neglect cases received a quite different pattern of services than other types of abuse victims.

Historically, the view of elder mistreatment in the United States has been similar to that of child abuse and has been detrimental to the understanding of elder mistreatment. Until recently, there was little understanding of the complexity of elder mistreatment and the legal system lacked appropriate laws with which to handle this growing problem. Over the last two decades, legislation, laws, and criminal codes of conduct have been developed to tackle the problem of elder mistreatment. However, little knowledge or understanding of the public health problems and legal implications related to the most common form of elder mistreatment referred to Adult Protective Services (APS), elder self-neglect, is available. The growth of this national problem has expanded the role of the legal system and pushed the development of interdisciplinary research with the intent of defining and understanding the problem of self-neglect and with the ultimate goal of expanding intervention strategies. The Consortium for Research in Elder Self-Neglect of Texas (CREST) is the leader in this field and the pilot study suggests numerous medical and legal implications for both intervention and future research.
