Outer product of gradients (OPG) achieves dimension reduction via estimating the gradients of the regression function. In this paper, we propose two novel OPG estimators via local rank regression: the rank OPG estimator and the Walsh-average OPG estimator. Both proposals guard against a wide range of error distributions, and are safe alternatives to existing OPG estimators based on local linear regression or local L1 regression. The effectiveness of the new proposals are demonstrated via extensive numerical studies.  相似文献

This paper develops the theory of calibration estimation and proposes calibration approach alternative to existing calibration estimators for estimating population mean of the study variable using auxiliary variable in stratified sampling. The theory of new calibration estimation is given and optimum weights are derived. A simulation study is carried out to performance of the proposed calibration estimator with other existing calibration estimators. The results reveal that the proposed calibration estimators are more efficient than Tracy et al., Singh et al., Singh calibration estimators of the population mean.  相似文献

High-dimensional predictive models, those with more measurements than observations, require regularization to be well defined, perform well empirically, and possess theoretical guarantees. The amount of regularization, often determined by tuning parameters, is integral to achieving good performance. One can choose the tuning parameter in a variety of ways, such as through resampling methods or generalized information criteria. However, the theory supporting many regularized procedures relies on an estimate for the variance parameter, which is complicated in high dimensions. We develop a suite of information criteria for choosing the tuning parameter in lasso regression by leveraging the literature on high-dimensional variance estimation. We derive intuition showing that existing information-theoretic approaches work poorly in this setting. We compare our risk estimators to existing methods with an extensive simulation and derive some theoretical justification. We find that our new estimators perform well across a wide range of simulation conditions and evaluation criteria.  相似文献

Existing estimators of a finite population distribution function that utilize auxiliary information are often constructed by a point wise argument. As a result, these estimators are not always monotone. We adopt a functional approach to the problem and propose two estimators based on compositions of functions. Asymptotic variance formulae are derived for the proposed es-timators. Comparisons are made with existing estimators in a simulation study using three natural populations.  相似文献

This paper introduces two estimators, a boundary corrected minimum variance kernel estimator based on a uniform kernel and a discrete frequency polygon estimator, for the cell probabilities of ordinal contingency tables. Simulation results show that the minimum variance boundary kernel estimator has a smaller average sum of squared error than the existing boundary kernel estimators. The discrete frequency polygon estimator is simple and easy to interpret, and it is competitive with the minimum variance boundary kernel estimator. It is proved that both estimators have an optimal rate of convergence in terms of mean sum of squared error, The estimators are also defined for high-dimensional tables.  相似文献

We introduce new estimators of the inhomogeneous K-function and the pair correlation function of a spatial point process as well as the cross K-function and the cross pair correlation function of a bivariate spatial point process under the assumption of second-order intensity-reweighted stationarity. These estimators rely on a ‘global’ normalisation factor which depends on an aggregation of the intensity function, while the existing estimators depend ‘locally’ on the intensity function at the individual observed points. The advantages of our new global estimators over the existing local estimators are demonstrated by theoretical considerations and a simulation study.  相似文献

In recent years, calibration estimation has become an important field of research in survey sampling. This paper proposes a new calibration estimator for the population mean in the presence of two auxiliary variables in stratified sampling. The theory of new calibration estimator is given and optimum calibration weights are derived. A simulation study is carried out to performance of the proposed calibration estimator over other existing calibration estimators. The results reveal that the proposed calibration estimators are more efficient than other existing calibration estimators in stratified sampling.  相似文献

MODEL-ASSISTED HIGHER-ORDER CALIBRATION OF ESTIMATORS OF VARIANCE   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In survey sampling, interest often centres on inference for the population total using information about an auxiliary variable. The variance of the estimator used plays a key role in such inference. This study develops a new set of higher‐order constraints for the calibration of estimators of variance for various estimators of the population total. The proposed strategy requires an appropriate model for describing the relationship between the response and auxiliary variable, and the variance of the auxiliary variable. It is therefore referred to as a model‐assisted approach. Several new estimators of variance, including the higher‐order calibration estimators of the variance of the ratio and regression estimators suggested by Singh, Horn & Yu and Sitter & Wu are special cases of the proposed technique. The paper presents and discusses the results of an empirical study to compare the performance of the proposed estimators and existing counterparts.  相似文献

On boundary correction in kernel density estimation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It is well known now that kernel density estimators are not consistent when estimating a density near the finite end points of the support of the density to be estimated. This is due to boundary effects that occur in nonparametric curve estimation problems. A number of proposals have been made in the kernel density estimation context with some success. As of yet there appears to be no single dominating solution that corrects the boundary problem for all shapes of densities. In this paper, we propose a new general method of boundary correction for univariate kernel density estimation. The proposed method generates a class of boundary corrected estimators. They all possess desirable properties such as local adaptivity and non-negativity. In simulation, it is observed that the proposed method perform quite well when compared with other existing methods available in the literature for most shapes of densities, showing a very important robustness property of the method. The theory behind the new approach and the bias and variance of the proposed estimators are given. Results of a data analysis are also given.  相似文献

One of the standard variable selection procedures in multiple linear regression is to use a penalisation technique in least‐squares (LS) analysis. In this setting, many different types of penalties have been introduced to achieve variable selection. It is well known that LS analysis is sensitive to outliers, and consequently outliers can present serious problems for the classical variable selection procedures. Since rank‐based procedures have desirable robustness properties compared to LS procedures, we propose a rank‐based adaptive lasso‐type penalised regression estimator and a corresponding variable selection procedure for linear regression models. The proposed estimator and variable selection procedure are robust against outliers in both response and predictor space. Furthermore, since rank regression can yield unstable estimators in the presence of multicollinearity, in order to provide inference that is robust against multicollinearity, we adjust the penalty term in the adaptive lasso function by incorporating the standard errors of the rank estimator. The theoretical properties of the proposed procedures are established and their performances are investigated by means of simulations. Finally, the estimator and variable selection procedure are applied to the Plasma Beta‐Carotene Level data set.  相似文献

In this article, we study the characterization of admissible linear estimators in a multivariate linear model with inequality constraint, under a matrix loss function. In the homogeneous class, we present several equivalent, necessary and sufficient conditions for a linear estimator of estimable functions to be admissible. In the inhomogeneous class, we find that the necessary and sufficient conditions depend on the rank of the matrix in the constraint. When the rank is greater than one, the necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained. When the rank is equal to one, we have necessary conditions and sufficient conditions separately. We also obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for a linear estimator of inestimable function to be admissible in both classes.  相似文献

The kernel method of estimation of curves is now popular and widely used in statistical applications. Kernel estimators suffer from boundary effects, however, when the support of the function to be estimated has finite endpoints. Several solutions to this problem have already been proposed. Here the authors develop a new method of boundary correction for kernel density estimation. Their technique is a kind of generalized reflection involving transformed data. It generates a class of boundary corrected estimators having desirable properties such as local smoothness and nonnegativity. Simulations show that the proposed method performs quite well when compared with the existing methods for almost all shapes of densities. The authors present the theory behind this new methodology, and they determine the bias and variance of their estimators.  相似文献

Estimating a curve nonparametrically from data measured with error is a difficult problem that has been studied by many authors. Constructing a consistent estimator in this context can sometimes be quite challenging, and in this paper we review some of the tools that have been developed in the literature for kernel‐based approaches, founded on the Fourier transform and a more general unbiased score technique. We use those tools to rederive some of the existing nonparametric density and regression estimators for data contaminated by classical or Berkson errors, and discuss how to compute these estimators in practice. We also review some mistakes made by those working in the area, and highlight a number of problems with an existing R package decon .  相似文献

Missing data analysis requires assumptions about an outcome model or a response probability model to adjust for potential bias due to nonresponse. Doubly robust (DR) estimators are consistent if at least one of the models is correctly specified. Multiply robust (MR) estimators extend DR estimators by allowing for multiple models for both the outcome and/or response probability models and are consistent if at least one of the multiple models is correctly specified. We propose a robust quasi-randomization-based model approach to bring more protection against model misspecification than the existing DR and MR estimators, where any multiple semiparametric, nonparametric or machine learning models can be used for the outcome variable. The proposed estimator achieves unbiasedness by using a subsampling Rao–Blackwell method, given cell-homogenous response, regardless of any working models for the outcome. An unbiased variance estimation formula is proposed, which does not use any replicate jackknife or bootstrap methods. A simulation study shows that our proposed method outperforms the existing multiply robust estimators.  相似文献

In this article, a transmuted linear exponential distribution is developed that generalizes the linear exponential distribution with an additional parameter using the quadratic rank transmutation map which was studied by Shaw et al. Some statistical properties of the proposed distribution such as moments, quantiles, and the failure rate function are investigated. The maximum likelihood estimators of unknown parameters are also discussed and a real data analysis is carried out to illustrate the superiority of the proposed distribution.  相似文献

The estimation problem for varying coefficient models has been studied by many authors. We consider the problem in the case that the unknown functions admit different degrees of smoothness. In this paper we propose a reducing component local polynomial method to estimate the unknown functions. It is shown that all of our estimators achieve the optimal convergence rates. The asymptotic distributions of our estimators are also derived. The established asymptotic results and the simulation results show that our estimators outperform the the existing two-step estimators when the coefficient functions admit different degrees of smoothness. We also develop methods to speed up the estimation of the model and the selection of the bandwidths.

This paper proposes a new method for estimating the parameters of Lorenz Curves (LC’s) and fitting LC’s to observed data. The method is very general. It is applicable to any family of LC’s as long as it is given in closed form which is often the case in practice. The method can also be applied to either the LC or to its associated distribution. The estimators are easy to compute as they are obtained one at a time by solving only one equation in one unknown and in many cases the solutions are given in closed-forms. An additional advantage, that is not shared with the currently used method of estimation, is that the method is invariant as to the specification of which variable is written as a function of the other in the LC form. The method is applied to the most commonly suggested LC’s families. An example of real-life data is used to illustrate the methodology. A simulation study is performed to study the properties of the proposed estimators and to compare them with existing ones. The results seem to indicate that the proposed estimators have good properties and they often perform much better than the existing ones.  相似文献

This paper proposes an optimal estimation method for the shape parameter, probability density function and upper tail probability of the Pareto distribution. The new method is based on a weighted empirical distribution function. The exact efficiency functions of the estimators relative to the existing estimators are derived. The paper gives L 1-optimal and L 2-optimal weights for the new weighted estimator. Monte Carlo simulation results confirm the theoretical conclusions. Both theoretical and simulation results show that the new estimation method is more efficient relative to several existing methods in many situations.  相似文献

Abstract. A non‐parametric rank‐based test of exchangeability for bivariate extreme‐value copulas is first proposed. The two key ingredients of the suggested approach are the non‐parametric rank‐based estimators of the Pickands dependence function recently studied by Genest and Segers, and a multiplier technique for obtaining approximate p‐values for the derived statistics. The proposed approach is then extended to left‐tail decreasing dependence structures that are not necessarily extreme‐value copulas. Large‐scale Monte Carlo experiments are used to investigate the level and power of the various versions of the test and show that the proposed procedure can be substantially more powerful than tests of exchangeability derived directly from the empirical copula. The approach is illustrated on well‐known financial data.  相似文献
