Some Remarks on Statistical Education

A definition of the subject of statistics is given, and the difference between the chalkboard world of the teacher of statistics and the real world of the experimenter is stressed. An overemphasis on significance testing, hypothesis testing, and decision procedures has led to a de-emphasis of statistical design. The teaching of statistical design theory, statistics teaching in a changing world, the importance of model building, and different approaches to teaching statistics are discussed. Some published materials developed to meet teaching needs and a new type of statistics course are described. Information about special issues in statistical education (teaching and consulting) is presented.     

Remarks on tests of homogeneity

Relations between tests constructed in a recent paper in this journal (Johnson and Kotz, J. Statist. Plann. Inference 41 (1994) 61- 72) and an earlier paper by Nikitina (in: V.V. Nalimov, ed., Regression Experiments (Moscow Univ. Press, Moscow, 1977)) are discussed.

Remarks on the 'Bayesian' method of moments

Zellner has proposed a novel methodology for estimating structural parameters and predicting future observables based on two moments of a subjective distribution and the application of the maximum entropy principle-all in the absence of an explicit statistical model or likelihood function for the data. He calls his procedure the 'Bayesian method of moments' (BMOM). In a recent paper in this journal, Green and Strawderman applied the BMOM to a model for slash pine plantations. It is our view that there are inconsistencies between BMOM and Bayesian (conditional) probability, as we explain in this paper.     

Remarks on multivariate analogues of kendall's tau

The aim of the paper is to discuss a decision theoretical interpretation of multivariate analogues of Kendall's tau.

Some Remarks on Latent Variable Models in Categorical Data Analysis

We present an overview of some important and/or interesting contributions to the latent variable literature for the analysis of multivariate categorical responses, beginning with Lazarsfeld's introduction of latent class models. There is by now an enormous literature on latent variable models for categorical responses, especially in the context of including random effects in generalized linear mixed models, so this is necessarily a highly selective overview. Due to space considerations, we summarize the main ideas, suppressing details. As part of our presentation, we raise a couple of questions that may suggest future research work.     

Remarks on the L1 distance in statistical data analysis

We propose the L₁ distance between the distribution of a binned data sample and a probability distribution from which it is hypothetically drawn as a statistic for testing agreement between the data and a model. We study the distribution of this distance for N-element samples drawn from k bins of equal probability and derive asymptotic formulae for the mean and dispersion of L₁ in the large-N limit. We argue that the L₁ distance is asymptotically normally distributed, with the mean and dispersion being accurately reproduced by asymptotic formulae even for moderately large values of N and k.     

Remarks on an integral functional driven by sub-fractional Brownian motion

This paper studies the functionals where is a one-dimension sub-fractional Brownian motion with index H∈(0,1). It shows that there exists a constant p_H∈(1,2) such that p-variation of the process (j=1,2) is equal to 0 if p>p_H, where ?_j, j=1,2, are the local time and weighted local time of S^H, respectively. This extends the classical results for Brownian motion.
