Summary Functional responses of the wolf spider,Pardosa pseudoannulata (Boesenberg et Strand) attacking the rice brown planthopper,Nilaparvata lugens (St?l.), and the mirid predatorCyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter were both those of Holling Type II. The attack rate was higher and handling time lower forC. lividipennis. However, when caged with the two prey, the wolf spider showed a significant preference forN. lugens at a lower prey proportion. Proportions of prey attacked were significantly different from the expected ratios of prey available as well as from the predicted preferences derived from the functional response parameters. As proportions ofN. lugens attacked changed from greater to less than expected as the proportions ofN. lugens available increased, a “reverse switch” behaviour seems to be evident.  相似文献

Summary The life cycle of a non-diapausingT. urticae population was studied in a pear orchard in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture, western Honsh?, Japan. The mites overwintered only on biennial weeds in the orchard without entering diapause, started to increase in number in early spring on them and then moved to other weeds as they emerged. The occurrence of the mites on pear began in early May several weeks after the unfolding of pear leaves and the population on pear was initiated by the migrants from the weeds around the base of pear trees. The population on pear showed two distinct peak occurrences, one in June and the other in mid-autumn. After pear leaves dropped in late autumn, the mites returned to biennial weeds for overwintering. Summary To elucidate the basic food requirement of spiders, the important polyphagous predators of rice-plant insect pests, an attempt was made to measure the respiratory energy loss of fasting spiders,Lycosa pseudoannulata. Relationship between fresh (y) and dry (x) weights of spiders inhabiting the bottom layer of the rice-plant community was represented by the following allometric equation:y=0.428x 0.872. The carbon dioxide production by previously fed and unfed females under the dark at 29°C 100% R. H. was measured by a titration technique. The relationship between fresh body weight and CO2 production by unfed animals could be represented by the equationM=aW b, M being the CO2 output per individual per day andW the fresh body weight. The constantb, which determines the slope of curve, was 0.808. Respiration of the adult female with 100 mg fresh weight was 1.155±0.250 mg CO2/100 g fresh weight/day or 48.69 mg CO2/g dry weight/day. This value corresponds to 35.81 cal/g fresh weight/day or 150.94 cal/g dry weight/day. Supposing the calorific content of spiders to be 5820 cal/g dry weight, rate of the respiratory energy loss to total energy of the body was estimated to be 2.60%. This rate did not strongly contradict with the loss of fresh body weight before and after the measurement. The metabolic rate showed remarkable fluctuation with changing food supply. The CO2 production of starved individuals decreased to 83.63±16.34% as compared with individuals which were fed before the measurement.  相似文献

Summary Populations of the two-spotted spider mite,Tetranychus urticae Koch collected from various localities and from various host plants in Japan showed wide variations in diapause attribute. Diapause percentages at 18°C/9L15D varied from nearly 100% in the north to 0% in the south-west. At intermediate latitudes the mites showed wide inter-population variations. Populations on herbaceous hosts in vinyl- or glass-houses gave significantly lower incidence of diapause than those on roses and deciduous fruit trees. Presence of winter hosts and better host quality under protected environments seemed to favour non-diapausing mites. The temperature threshold for diapause expression also varied widely among local populations. Northern populations consistently had higher and less variable thresholds than populations at intermediate latitudes with thresholds between 15 and 18°C. Inbred lines derived from a population in Kyoto exhibited a wide variation in diapause percentage at 18°C. These results show that diapause inT. urticae is a quantitative threshold trait and that populations in central Japan consist of a variety of genotypes with different diapause traits. This might provide a genetic source for adaptation to local and temporal variations in environmental conditions.  相似文献

Summary Mean daily food consumption and total lifetime food consumption of the spider,Nephila clavata, were estimated in natural populations. Daily food consumption in the late adult stage was 27–150 mg wet weight, which was nearly equivalent or slightly larger than that in other large web-building spiders. Considerable variation in food consumption was found among habitats or years. The largest variation among habitats in the same year was 7 and 5 fold for daily and lifetime consumption, respectively, while that among years in the same habitat was 3.5 and 2.5 for daily and lifetime consumption, respectively. Feeding conditions evaluated from the food consumption per body weight of spiders declined during the period from mid-July to mid-September in almost all the populations, which suggested that they faced to severe food limitation in this period.  相似文献

Summary Interactions ofTyphlodromus mites and their prey, the European red mite, in orchard settings were examined through computer simulation. In particular, the consequences of very slow dispersal by the predators, compared with the weather-dependent higher rates of prey dispersal, were elucidated. In simulations of the interactions of the predator and its prey, both dispersal and temperature strongly affected the available supply of juvenile prey, and thus could determine whether the predators on an individual tree survived or perished.  相似文献

Summary An wolf spider,Lycosa pseudoannulata, collected from the field were reared in test tubes supplied with fruit flies as the food, and the number and weight of fruit flies killed per unit time and the weight of residuum of killed flies were recorded. When the cumulative number of flies killed by a spider was plotted against time after the beginning of food supply, the angle of the curve obtained decreased gradually until a constant value. In this time, it seems that the gut of spider had saturated with food and the increase rate of number of flies killed reflects the rate of food disappeared from gut by assimilation and egestion. The amount of ingestion was obtained by subtracting the weight of residuum and the gain of live weight of the spider from the weight of killed flies. After the gut has saturated, the amount of food remained in the gut is considered to be equal to the capacity of gut, which is an essential factor in the study of predation. The amount of food disappearance from gut was also estimated. There was a linear relationship between the log body weight of spiders and the log capacity of gut. The linear relationship was also seen between the log total amount of ingestion and the log total amount of food disappeared from gut.  相似文献

We examined the age structure and sex ratio of a viperid snake,Trimeresurus flavoviridis, based on samples collected by hand by local inhabitants, habu hunters and by baited traps in the middle and south of Okinawa Island, Japan. Small individuals had a low possibility of capture in all the collecting methods. The age structure was estimated through summing up the age frequency in each snout-vent length (SVL) class in samples with a similar SVL structure. From the age structures, annual survival rates of adult females and males were estimated to be 0.7 and 0.8, respectively. In most samples the sex ratio was biased towards males, especially in March and August and in large individuals. However, the female proportion increased in June.  相似文献

Summary There are 4 species belonging to the wolf spiderPardosa amentata species group in Hokkaido. The 4 species have separately occurred in Hokkaido in general, but a few species have sometimes occurred together at the same sites. Their biology at the coexisting sites, with special reference to partitioning of space was studied.P. agraria mainly inhabited fields and occurred widely in Hokkaido.P. hokkaido, P. brebivulva andP. lugubris inhabited the vicinity of forests and occurred in southern Hokkaido and on the side of the Sea of Japan in Hokkaido, all over Hokkaido excent the side of the Sea of Japan in central Hokkaido, and the lowlands and highlands in northern and eastern Hokkaido and mainly the highlands in other regions, respectively. In eastern Hokkaido whereP. brevivulva andP. lugubris have coexisted, as the number of spiders detected and the number of localities of the former were less than those of the latter, it was concluded that the former occurred mainly in southern Hokkaido and the Hidaka region. In southern Hokkaido whereP. hokkaido andP. brevivulva have coexisted, few individuals of both species were collected together at the same sites, and they were distributed allotopically. In short, the partitioning of space among theP. amentata species group occurring in Hokkaido was clear. From investigations on the coexisting sites and some other reports, it was considered that food, life cycle and diel activity periodicity amongPardosa occurring in Hokkaido were similar to one another. This may be one of the causes of the clear space partitioning amongPardosa. SincePardosa is a raptorial predator that does not weave but wanders on the ground and uses space horizontally, available prey resource forPardosa would be limited. It was therefore conjectured that the spider would be prone to space segregation, even if the spider could segregate the other niche dimensions. The partitioning of space betweenP. agraria andP. hokkaido inhabiting distinct habitats was loose when it was compared with that between species inhabiting similar habitats. As most of the spiders observed in the overlapping areas were females with egg cocoons, which required little food, the reduced feeding was considered to have allowed the loose partitioning.  相似文献

Summary Field studies were conducted to clarify whether variation in food availability among habitats influences population density, and whether population density has a negative effect on foraging success in the orb-web spider,Nephila clavata. Lifetime food consumption per individual (i.e., foraging success) strongly correlated with mean body size of adult females and mean fecundity in populations. Also, there was a positive correlation between foraging success and population density. Since foraging success reflected potential prey availability in the habitat, food resource appeared to be a limiting factor for populations in this spider. Mean fecundity per individual correlated with population density of the following year, suggesting that decreased reproduction is a major component of food limitation on population density. Consistent defferences in mean body size between particular sites were observed over years, while such difference was less obvious in density. Thus, ranking of food abundance among habitats seems to be predictable between years. A field experiment revealed that an artificial increase in population density had no negative effect on the feeding rate of individuals, suggesting that intraspecific competition for food is not important in this species.  相似文献

Summary The frequency distributions in sex ratios of offspring from 4 fieldTetranychus kanzawai populations were examined. No significant difference was observed between average sex ratios of the 4 populations, although there was a great variability within each population, especially in the population fromPueraia lobata. Using the population fromP. lobata, inbred lines with high (H) and low (L) sex ratios were selected. Crossing experiments between H and L showed that sex ratio is determined by the genotype of mothers. It seemed that sex ratio is cointrolled by several genes, with no cytoplasmic factor involved.  相似文献

A population of a viperid snake,Trimeresurus flavoviridis, was studied over 10 years by removal trapping on a small subtropical island in Japan. The sex ratio of trapped individuals changed seasonally, but was not biased to either sex in the whole sample of 258 individuals. The age of each individual was estimated through the size structure and the age-size relationship. The minimum number of individuals at the beginning of the study was estimated through accumulating older individuals trapped in the subsequent years. By assuming an annual natural survival rate in the course of this accumulation, an age structure was simulated which led to calculate a resulted natural survival rate. The assumed rate of 0.62 fitted best to the resulted one. The annual trapped proportion estimated on the simulated absolute number of individuals was higher in older individuals than in younger ones with the overall mean of 16%.  相似文献

Plutella xylostella in the temperate zone shows a clear seasonal change in adult body size. In the laboratory, large and small moths were produced during immature stages at 15°C and 25°C, respectively. These moths were then used to evaluate longevity, age-specific flight ability, flight ability of mated and unmated females, and the influence of flight experience on the subsequent reproductive success. The large moths lived longer and displayed a greater flight ability over 3 weeks. Irrespective of body size, unmated females flew for a longer time than mated females, and flight experience affected their subsequent reproductive success. Females of both sizes mated and laid eggs soon after emergence, without any obvious pre-reproductive period. More flight experience did not delay oviposition, but did reduce egg production. It is likely that large moths with a longer adult life span and greater flight ability are better fitted for long-distance flight and more fecund than small ones. These experimental results may explain why long-distance migration ofP. xylostella is mostly seen during cool seasons, when relatively large moths with long forewing appear in the field.  相似文献

Summary A series of experiments were carried out with the endophagous egg parasiteTelenomus fariai on its hostTriatoma phyllosoma pallidipennis to determine the possible role of intraspecific competition by the parasite progeny in population regulation of the parasite. Eight parasite densities (1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 individuals per vial) were used, and the design of sequentially sacrificed replicates applied. Survivorship curves for each density indicated smaller number of progeny per host at higher densities, and the shapes of the curves suggested a relatively early mortality process.Morris' linear regression technique for determining within-generation density-dependence was used, and the results showed that only larval mortality could be identified as density dependent. The same technique applied within the larval stage proved that only mortality of larvae in their second, third, and fourth day of development were responsible for population regulation. The applicability of the technique, as well as the relevance of the results for natural population, is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The study of the population dynamics of the celery leaf-miner,Philophylla heraclei, must take into account the fact that the host-plant is not present permanently and that it develops between the two annual generations of the insect. This development affects in particular the quality and quantity of the leaves fed upon by the mining larvae. It is possible to know the numerical change of the populations from one annual generation to the next (bivoltine insect) and from one year to the next by counting the populations in the various larval instars, responsible for the injury caused to celery. An accurate method of counting of larval numbers, taking into account their change parallel with that of the host-plant, is described in this text. It makes it possible to know with accuracy the duration and importance of the infestations in relation to external factors and to factors inherent to the host-plant itself. Certain traits of larval behaviour, particularly the transfer of a larva from its original mine to a secondary mine as a result of food shortage can thus be established and estimated quantitatively.  相似文献

Temporal changes in the population size of a phytophagous lady-beetle were analyzed to identify mechanisms affecting lady-beetle population dynamics at different spatial scales. The study area (15 ha) included 18 habitat patches. The major host plants were potato for first generation larvae and eggplant for second generation larvae. The habitat patches were classified into three groups according to the major host plants in each patch: P-E patches (both host plants available), P patches (potato only), and E patches (eggplant only). The winter disappearance of adults in the whole study area, and larval mortality in E patches were apparently the most important factors disturbing the overall population density. Density-dependent movement of females appeared to have the greatest stabilizing effect on the yearly fluctuation of population density. Rate of increase of female adults from the first to the second generation,R, was generally higher on eggplants in E patches than in P-E patches because the adult density of the first generation was much higher in P-E patches. The yearly fluctuation of adult density in each generation tended to be less in patches with all habitat components necessary for the full life cycle (P-E patches). However, such patches were not favorable for first generation females, as indicated by the lower rate of increase from the first to the second generation. The density and stability of lady-beetle populations is discussed in relation to habitat structure.  相似文献

Summary Utilization of patchy habitats by adult populations of threePieris butterflies,P. rapae, P. melete andP. napi was studied throughout the flight season in an area of their coexistence, about 3×1.5 km, in a farm village in the mountains in Inabu, Aichi Prefecture. Field study was by the mark-recapture method. Results were analyzed by dispersal distances and recapture duration decay curves for adults of different age-classes estimated on the basis of physical condition of their wings, together with supplementary information of daliy egg-laying rate of females, obtained in field cages. Sexually immature, mated femals ofP. rapae after teneral stage showed a migratory flight. On the other hand, reproductive females and all males ofP. rapae were strongly resident within suitable habitats, and reproductive females begun to lay eggs abundantly at sunny places of newly suitable areas within a short period.P. melete seemed to disperse gradually from emerged stites and females of this species continued to lay some constant numbers of eggs for more than ten days over a wider area.P. napi appeared more likeP. melete thanP. rapae. The habitats of the three species can be characterized as follows:P. rapae, temporary, continued for pre-reproductive females but localized for reproductive females and all males, and unstable;P. melete, permanent, widespread, and stable;P. napi, permanent, localized, and stable. The numbers of generations ofP. rapae, P. melete andP. napi were estimated to be about six, three and three, respectively. Seasonal fluctuations in the number of adults were influenced by the stability of their habitats, i. e., the population size fluctuated sharply inP. rapae, but it was much more stable inP. melete andP. napi. In view of these results, it can be said thatP. rapae fits the general characteristics of a r-strategist whereasP. melete andP. napi are more K-strategic thanP. rapae.  相似文献
