Despite the rapid growth of applied sociology as a recognized subdiscipline in American sociology, very little attention has
been focused on the use of traditional theory in applied settings. The author traces consensual and conflictual approaches
to the concept of community in the applied literature of the community mental health movement and relates them to political
economic phases of the movement. The analysis suggests that varying forms of consensual theory dominated the early years of
the movement, that conflict theory emerged during the middle years, and that consensual theory again reasserted its dominance
in the late years of the movement. It is concluded that applied theory is importantly limited and directed by the political
and economic interests that influence the environment in which that theory is produced and employed.

This commentary speaks to several issues that arise from the papers in this special issue. Two articles--Kessler (2002) and Mirowsky and Ross (2002)--focus on a major measurement issue: dimensional versus diagnostic-type assessments. One topic requires greater attention: the correspondence of these measures with the underlying states they supposedly measure--constructs in the psychometric tradition and empirically defined illnesses in the medical or psychiatric tradition. Conclusions about the nature of these unobserved states remain tentative at this time. Three articles--Keyes (2002), Schwartz (2002), and Umberson, Williams, and Anderson (2002)--address the expansion of mental health outcomes. The existing reliance on emotional distress is problematic for sociological research because a single disorder is not a good proxy for estimates of the overall mental health consequences of social arrangements. Although these papers present diverse and sometimes conflicting perspectives, collectively they demonstrate that no one approach to outcomes is best for all research questions. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis paper examines the development of Critical Race Theory (CRT) in England, in terms of impact and opposition. Since the early 2000s CRT has become a significant intellectual space for race-conscious scholars and activists in England. The current paper traces the growth of CRT in the field of education (where it has had the greatest impact since its arrival). It identifies the academic research, writing, networks and events that have established CRT in England. It discusses the substantive concerns of English CRT and how these are both similar to and distinct from CRT as developed in the USA. In England, CRT has also met with opposition. This paper examines the discourses of derision voiced by its antagonists, arguing that much of this antagonism has an atavistic quality, being rooted in long-standing antipathy towards race-conscious social analyses. 相似文献

Organizations are the fundamental building blocks of modern societies. So it is not surprising that they have always been at the center of sociological research, starting with Marx and Weber. And although Durkheim did not explicitly analyze organizations, his work has clear implications for the study of organizations. We review the insights of these three pioneering sociologists and then discuss ideas about organizations proposed by other scholars, from both management and sociology, from 1910 to the mid‐1970s. Marx, Weber, and Durkheim's theoretical frameworks were tools for understanding the transition to modernity. Marx and Weber saw organizations as sites of class struggle and rationalization, respectively, while Durkheim focused on social cohesion and collective sensemaking, both of which underpin organizations. Later theorists focused more closely on the meso‐level and micro‐level processes that happen within and between organizations. These later theorists emphasized pragmatic concerns of optimizing organizational efficiency and labor productivity (scientific management and human relations theories), processes of affiliation and hierarchy (Simmel), limits to rational decision‐making (the Carnegie School), and environmental conditions that shape organizational processes and outcomes (contingency theories). A companion paper describes the three perspectives (demographic, relational, and cultural) that have dominated sociological research on organizations since the mid‐1970s. 相似文献

The utilization of racial canons in American sociology has dictated traditional models of identity. Biracial Americans are
consistently identified based upon the presumed race category of their African heritage. The result is that biracial Americans
are ambiguous pertaining to racial identity without consideration of their lifespan experience, i.e.: social, cultural, and
familial. To enable a more applicable model of identity will require that sociologists terminale the use of racial canons
as a dictate of identity. Accordingly, development across the lifespan is heretofore both commensurate with biracial identity
and the unique biracial experience.
He has published numerous articles on the subject of race identity issues and is currently working on a book Beyond Black
and White: Racism Among People of Color. 相似文献

Some kids are left behind: The failure of a perspective, using critical race theory to expand the coverage in the sociology of youth sports 下载免费PDF全文
Sports are no longer simply extracurricular activities. For many children, sports are curricular, central to their identity, development, and peer and familial relationships. However, sport scholars and sociologists spend little time trying to learn and understand the huge growth in youth sports participation and even less attention to the role of race in youth sports. Sociology could offer much more, but suffers from what James McKee calls ( 1993 ) “the failure of a perspective” with regard to studying and understanding race, racism, and race relations. Critical Race Theory can help to extend the coverage of youth sports to include more input from Youth and of Scholars of Color. In this article, we review a current debate in the sociology of youth sports, which illustrates the gap in understanding the experiences of youth of color and Black athletes in particular. And, we provide solutions and ideas for future research. 相似文献

Early sociological studies of the American higher education system noted that despite a widespread ideology of egalitarianism,
both individuals and departments are highly stratified. Their main findings were that 1) the distribution of Ph.D. departments
in any given field tended to cluster at the low end of the prestige hierarchy; 2) a few elite graduate programs graduated
the vast majority of all Ph.D.’s awarded in the United States; 3) downward mobility for all but a handful of Ph.D.’s was inevitable;
and 4) elite graduate programs protected their prestige through inbreeding. Since those studies there have been few attempts
to document changes in the structure of stratification in scientific disciplines in general, and sociology in particular.
I use longitudinal data on departments and individual data on recent sociology Ph.D.’s to study changes in the structure of
the stratification system in sociology over the past 30 years. My results reflect a mixed picture of change and stability;
while the distribution of departmental prestige, the production of Ph.D.’s, and inbreeding mechanisms have shifted since 1964,
the pattern of placement of new Ph.D’s in doctorate-granting departments has changed very little.

1. Veterans of the military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan may have been exposed to significant psychological stressors, resulting in mental and emotional disorders. 2. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by symptoms in three domains: reexperiencing the trauma, avoiding stimuli associated with the trauma, and symptoms of increased autonomic arousal. 3. Treatment of PTSD often requires both psychological and pharmacological interventions. 4. In addition to PTSD, other mental disorders may be precipitated or worsened by exposure to combat, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance abuse. 相似文献

Two main problems in the sociology of morality 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Gabriel Abend 《Theory and Society》2008,37(2):87-125
Sociologists often ask why particular groups of people have the moral views that they do. I argue that sociology’s empirical
research on morality relies, implicitly or explicitly, on unsophisticated and even obsolete ethical theories, and thus is
based on inadequate conceptions of the ontology, epistemology, and semantics of morality. In this article I address the two
main problems in the sociology of morality: (1) the problem of moral truth, and (2) the problem of value freedom. I identify
two ideal–typical approaches. While the Weberian paradigm rejects the concept of moral truth, the Durkheimian paradigm accepts
it. By contrast, I argue that sociology should be metaphysically agnostic, yet in practice it should proceed as though there
were no moral truths. The Weberians claim that the sociology of morality can and should be value free; the Durkheimians claim
that it cannot and it should not. My argument is that, while it is true that factual statements presuppose value judgments,
it does not follow that sociologists are moral philosophers in disguise. Finally, I contend that in order for sociology to
improve its understanding of morality, better conceptual, epistemological, and methodological foundations are needed.

The kinds of research questions asked in the sociology of sport are no different from those generated by other substantive areas of sociology. However, while the more established areas of social inquiry have developed methods of research specifically suited to the situation in which their research is done, the sociology of sport has not yet reached this stage of development. The theoretical frameworks borrowed from other areas in sociology generate relevant questions, while the research methods borrowed from other areas in sociology often require adaptation to the particular situations found in the sociology of sport. This paper looks at three specific areas of sports study, and points to those problems that require new adaptations of the available research methods in order to deal with specific situational constraints. These areas may be roughly defined as: (a) the analysis of patterns of ownership in professional sports; (b) the analysis of athletic careers within the occupational culture of sport; and (c) the analysis of sports audiences. The authors conclude that theoretically informed and relevant research can be conducted in these areas provided that researchers are able to find imaginative adaptations of their techniques and procedures.Revised version of a paper presented at the 9th World Congress of Sociology, August 14–19, 1978, in Uppsala, Sweden. 相似文献

This paper presents a qualitative participatory study of Canadian young people who identified themselves as visible minorities and who have experienced discrimination based on their skin colour or ethnicity. Eighteen participants aged 15–24 (12 girls and 6 boys), representing four ethnic minority groups, participated in focus groups and in-depth interviews and shared their responses to racial discrimination against them. Analysis of the data from the four discussion groups reveals that racism occurs in everyday situations and places, a lot of times manifesting itself as subtle forms of discrimination. Our findings also suggest that most of the participants tend to employ non-confrontational approaches when dealing with racial violence against them, and provide us with the rationale behind their intentions. Further, youth are not uniformly impacted by racialized events, and therefore the coping strategies they use vary based on individual and contextual factors. Three common strategies for healing can be derived from the participants’ narratives: expressive-emotional, spiritual-forgiving and communicative-relational. We discuss our findings in the light of theoretical frameworks of resilience and coping approaches and argue that young people’s subjective appraisals of racialized events as well as contextual factors need to be addressed in any discussion on coping and resilience within minority youth populations. 相似文献

Risk for adult mental health problems associated with child sexual, physical, or emotional abuse and multiple types of child abuse was examined. Logistic regression analyses were used to test study hypotheses in a population-based sample of women (N = 3,936). As expected, child sexual, physical, and emotional abuse were independently associated with increased risk for mental health problems. History of multiple types of child abuse was also associated with elevated risk for mental health problems. In particular, exposure to all three types of child abuse was linked to a 23-fold increase in risk for probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Findings underscore relations between child emotional abuse and adult mental health problems and highlight the need for mental health services for survivors of multiple types of child abuse. 相似文献

"This study investigates homeownership differences among twelve racial/ethnic groups using the [U.S.] Public Use Sample data (PUMS) of the 1980 census.... The study identifies a number of differences among non-Hispanic whites, blacks, American Indians, and Asian and Hispanic groups in access to homeownership.... For every group there is a strong correspondence between homeownership and various individual-level factors: age, household composition, socioeconomic position and language acculturation. The observed differences in ownership are substantially attenuated when group differences in some of these variables are controlled." 相似文献

Upwards of 50% of youth reported to the child welfare system (CWS) do not receive mental health services, despite need. While children of color are less likely to receive services than Caucasians, the mechanisms through which disparities are sustained remain largely unknown. Data come from two nationally representative cohorts of youth who were referred to the CWS in 1999 and 2009. Results showed that while need for mental health services decreased, significant differences in the number of children who received services was not detected between cohorts. African American youth were less likely to receive services compared to their Caucasian counterparts, even after controlling for age, gender, type of maltreatment, and placement instability. However, after taking into account urbanicity, poverty, and the organizational-social context, the disparity between African American and Caucasian youth dissipated. Service disparities between Latino and Caucasian youth were not detected. The odds of service receipt were lower among youth nested within stressful organizational climates and urban (versus rural) counties, and the organizational-social context did not moderate the relationship between race and service receipt. Findings underscore the need to develop and implement strategies to increase access to services in urban counties and to promote an organizational climate conducive to reducing racial disparities. 相似文献

The conventional interpretation of the race problem in Peninsular Malaysia (Malaya) is founded upon the supposedly inevitable frictions between ethnic communities with sharply divergent cultural traditions. In this view, assimilation between the indigenous Malay population and the descendants of immigrants from China and India was always a remote possibility. In this paper I argue that modern race relations in Peninsular Malaysia, in the sense of impenetrable group boundaries, were a byproduct of British colonialism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Prior to 1850, inter-ethnic relations among Asian populations were marked by cultural stereotypes and occasional hostility, but there were also possibilities for inter-ethnic alliances and acculturation. Direct colonial rule brought European racial theory and constructed a social and economic order structured by race. A review of the writing of observers of colonial society provides a crude test of this hypothesis. 相似文献

After long neglect, evolutionary thinking is receiving new emphasis in the social sciences. Although evolutionary theories in biology are complex, changing, and often controversial, the basic concepts of variation, selection, and transmission potentially have powerful applications in sociology. In such uses, a crucial distinction must be made between developmental processes and evolutionary processes. Two main approaches characterize current evolutionary thinking in sociology: sociobiological explanations, and coevolutionary accounts of the interaction of genes and culture. Evolution through natural selection can occur with genes, cultural elements, and any other self-replicating codes. Although social learning is the cultural analogue of genetic transmission, cultural evolution does not necessarily maximize genetic fitness. Newly emerging sociological theories of evolution hold promise of integrating micro- and macroprocesses, providing explanations of complexity and diversity in social change, reconciling ideas of agency and structure, and linking sociology to biology without misleading reductionism. 相似文献
