Robust tests for comparing scale parameters, based on deviances—absolute deviations from the median—are examined. Higgins (2004) proposed a permutation test for comparing two treatments based on the ratio of deviances, but the performance of this procedure has not been investigated. A simulation study examines the performance of Higgins’ test relative to other tests of scale utilizing deviances that have been shown in the literature to have good properties. An extension of Higgins’ procedure to three or more treatments is proposed, and a second simulation study compares its performance to other omnibus tests for comparing scale. While no procedure emerged as a preferred choice in every scenario, Higgins’ tests are found to perform well overall with respect to Type I error rate and power.  相似文献

In the last few years, two adaptive tests for paired data have been proposed. One test proposed by Freidlin et al. [On the use of the Shapiro–Wilk test in two-stage adaptive inference for paired data from moderate to very heavy tailed distributions, Biom. J. 45 (2003), pp. 887–900] is a two-stage procedure that uses a selection statistic to determine which of three rank scores to use in the computation of the test statistic. Another statistic, proposed by O'Gorman [Applied Adaptive Statistical Methods: Tests of Significance and Confidence Intervals, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Philadelphia, 2004], uses a weighted t-test with the weights determined by the data. These two methods, and an earlier rank-based adaptive test proposed by Randles and Hogg [Adaptive Distribution-free Tests, Commun. Stat. 2 (1973), pp. 337–356], are compared with the t-test and to Wilcoxon's signed-rank test. For sample sizes between 15 and 50, the results show that the adaptive test proposed by Freidlin et al. and the adaptive test proposed by O'Gorman have higher power than the other tests over a range of moderate to long-tailed symmetric distributions. The results also show that the test proposed by O'Gorman has greater power than the other tests for short-tailed distributions. For sample sizes greater than 50 and for small sample sizes the adaptive test proposed by O'Gorman has the highest power for most distributions.  相似文献

The two-sample, distribution-free statistics of Smirnov (1939) are used to define a new statistic. While the Smirnov statistics are used as a general goodness-of-fit test, a distribution-free scale test based on this new statistic is developed. It is shown that this new test has higher power than the two-sided Smirnov statistic in detecting differences in scale for some symmetric distributions with equal means/medians. The critical values of the proposed test statistic and its limiting distribution are given  相似文献

We study robustness properties of two types of M-estimators of scale when both location and scale parameters are unknown: (i) the scale estimator arising from simultaneous M-estimation of location and scale; and (ii) its symmetrization about the sample median. The robustness criteria considered are maximal asymptotic bias and maximal asymptotic variance when the known symmetric unimodal error distribution is subject to unknown, possibly asymmetric, £-con-tamination. Influence functions and asymptotic variance functionals are derived, and computations of asymptotic biases and variances, under the normal distribution with ε-contamination at oo, are presented for the special subclass arising from Huber's Proposal 2 and its symmetrized version. Symmetrization is seen to reduce both asymptotic bias and variance. Some complementary theoretical results are obtained, and the tradeoff between asymptotic bias and variance is discussed.  相似文献

This paper gives an interpretation for the scale parameter of a Dirichlet process when the aim is to estimate a linear functional of an unknown probability distribution. We provide exact first and second posterior moments for such functionals under both informative and noninformative prior specifications. The noninformative case provides a normal approximation to the Bayesian bootstrap.  相似文献

This paper presents some innovative methods for modeling discrete scale invariant (DSI) processes and evaluation of corresponding parameters. For the case where the absolute values of the increments of DSI processes are in general increasing, we consider some moving sample variance of the increments and present some heuristic algorithm to characterize successive scale intervals. This enables us to estimate scale parameter of such DSI processes. To present some superior structure for the modeling of DSI processes, we consider the possibility that the variations inside the prescribed scale intervals show some further self-similar behavior. Such consideration enables us to provide more efficient estimators for Hurst parameters. We also present two competitive estimation methods for the Hurst parameters of self-similar processes with stationary increments and prove their efficiency. Using simulated samples of some simple fractional Brownian motion, we show that our estimators of Hurst parameter are more efficient as compared with the celebrated methods of convex rearrangement and quadratic variation. Finally we apply the proposed methods to evaluate DSI behavior of the S&P500 indices in some period.  相似文献

Ranked set sampling (RSS) is a sampling procedure that can be used to improve the cost efficiency of selecting sample units of an experiment or a study. In this paper, RSS is considered for estimating the location and scale parameters a and b>0, as well as the population mean from the family F((x?a)/b). Modified best linear unbiased estimators (BLUEs) and best linear invariant estimators (BLIEs) are considered. Numerical computations with different location-scale distributions and different sample sizes are conducted to assess the efficiency of the suggested estimators. It is found that the modified BLIEs are uniformly higher than that of BLUEs for all distributions considered in this study. The modified BLUE and BLIE are more efficient when the underlying distribution is symmetric.  相似文献

Shiue and Bain proposed an approximate F statistic for testing equality of two gamma distribution scale parameters in presence of a common and unknown shape parameter. By generalizing Shiue and Bain's statistic we develop a new statistic for testing equality of L >= 2 gamma distribution scale parameters. We derive the distribution of the new statistic ESP for L = 2 and equal sample size situation. For other situations distribution of ESP is not known and test based on the ESP statistic has to be performed by using simulated critical values. We also derive a C(α) statistic CML and develop a likelihood ratio statistic, LR, two modified likelihood ratio statistics M and MLB and a quadratic statistic Q. The distribution of each of the statistics CML, LR, M, MLB and Q is asymptotically chi-square with L - 1 degrees of freedom. We then conducted a monte-carlo simulation study to compare the perfor- mance of the statistics ESP, LR, M, MLB, CML and Q in terms of size and power. The statistics LR, M, MLB and Q are in general liberal and do not show power advantage over other statistics. The statistic CML, based on its asymptotic chi-square distribution, in general, holds nominal level well. It is most powerful or nearly most powerful in most situations and is simple to use. Hence, we recommend the statistic CML for use in general. For better power the statistic ESP, based on its empirical distribution, is recommended for the special situation for which there is evidence in the data that λ1 < … < λL and n1 < … < nL, where λ1 …, λL are the scale parameters and n1,…, nL are the sample sizes.  相似文献

In the location-scale estimation problem, we study robustness properties of M-estimators of the scale parameter under unknown ?-contamination of a fixed symmetric unimodal error distribution F0. Within a general class of M-estimators, the estimator with minimax asymptotic bias is shown to lie within the subclass of α-interquantile ranges of the empirical distribution symmetrized about the sample median. Our main result is that as ? → 0, the limiting minimax asymptotic bias estimator is sometimes (e.g., when Fo is Cauchy), but not always, the median absolute deviation about the median. It is also shown that contamination in the neighbourhood of a discontinuity of the influence function of a minimax bias estimator can sometimes inflate the asymptotic variance beyond that achieved by placing all the ?-contamination at infinity. This effect is quantified by a new notion of asymptotic efficiency that takes into account the effect of infinitesimal contamination of the parametric model for the error distribution.  相似文献

It is vital for insurance companies to have appropriate levels of loss reserving to pay outstanding claims and related settlement costs. With many uncertainties and time lags inherently involved in the claims settlement process, loss reserving therefore must be based on estimates. Existing models and methods cannot cope with irregular and extreme claims and hence do not offer an accurate prediction of loss reserving. This paper extends the conventional normal error distribution in loss reserving modeling to a range of heavy-tailed distributions which are expressed by certain scale mixtures forms. This extension enables robust analysis and, in addition, allows an efficient implementation of Bayesian analysis via Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations. Various models for the mean of the sampling distributions, including the log-Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), log-Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and state space models, are considered and the straightforward implementation of scale mixtures distributions is demonstrated using OpenBUGS.  相似文献

It is often assumed in situations in which life data from Weibull or extreme-value distributions are involved that data in different samples come from extreme-value distributions with the same scale parameter (equivalently, Weibull distributions with the same shape parameter). This paper proposes a number of tests for homogeneity for extreme-value scale parameters, based on a number of commonly used estimators for these scale parameters. Previous theoretical work and some simulation results provided here indicate that the null distributions of the test statistics proposed are well approximated by the x2 distribution under a wide range of conditions  相似文献

Hubert (1987Assignment Methods in Combinatorial Data Analysis) presented a class of permutation, or random assignment, techniques for assessing correspondence between general k-dimensional proximity measures on a set of “objects.” A major problem in higher-order assignment models is the prohibitive level of computation that is required. We present the first three exact moments of a test statistic for the symmetric cubic assignment model. Efficient computational formulas for the first three moments have been derived, thereby permitting approximation of the permutation distribution using well-known methods.  相似文献

Using Fisher's information fort-distributions, the absolute asymptotic efficiency of some M-estimates for scale with known location parameter is calculated and graphically illustrated. The compared estimators are the standard deviationS *, the mean absolute deviation, called mean deviationD *, the median absolute deviation, called MAD*, and some M-estimates for scale, one, which is very robust, and another one with high asymptotic efficiency fort-distributions close to the normal. The last one is considered with monotone (in the positive field) and with very late redescending χ-function too. Also the , an alternative and generalized excess measure defined as the double relative asymptotic variance of the underlying scale estimator in the previous paper, is calculated fort-distributions and graphically illustrated, because there is the relation that the higher the asymptotic efficiency of is, the lower is the corresponding .  相似文献

This article deals with the problem of Bayesian inference concerning the common scale parameter of several Pareto distributions. Bayesian hypothesis testing of, and Bayesian interval estimation for, the common scale parameter is given. Numerical studies including a comparison study, a simulation study, and a practical application study are given in order to illustrate our procedures and to demonstrate the performance, advantages, and merits of the Bayesian procedures over the classical and generalized variable procedures.  相似文献

We give new classes of Strawderman-type improved estimators for the scale parameter σ2 and the hazard rate parameter 1/σ1 of the exponential distributions E(μ2,σ2) and E(μ1,σ1) under the entropy loss. We then use these estimators to construct improved estimators for the ratio ρ=σ2/σ1. The sampling framework we consider integrates important life-testing schemes separately studied in the literature so far, namely, (i) i.i.d. sampling, (ii) Type-II censoring, (iii) progressive Type-II censoring and adaptive progressive Type-II censoring and (iv) record values data. Furthermore, we establish simple identities connecting the risk functions of the estimators of σ2 and 1/σ1 and those of ρ that have a direct impact on studying the risk behavior of the latter estimators. Finally, we indicate that no matter which of the above life-testing schemes is employed for the estimation of σ2, 1/σ1 or ρ, the corresponding improved estimator, which may be of Stein-type or Brewster and Zidek-type or Strawderman-type, will offer the same improvement over the usual estimator as long as the number of observed complete failure times is the same for each scheme. Our results unify and extend existing results on the estimation of exponential scale parameters in one or two populations.  相似文献

This paper studies the performance of tests which use a null hypothesis of bivariate symmetry and detect the broad class of location and/or scale alternatives . The conditionally distribution-free tests of Sen (1967) and Hollander (1971) and parametric tests related to those of Bell and Haller (1969) are compared in a Monte Carlo study which also includes a new conditionally distribution-free test.  相似文献

This paper concludes our comprehensive study on point estimation of model parameters of a gamma distribution from a second-order decision theoretic point of view. It should be noted that efficient estimation of gamma model parameters for samples ‘not large’ is a challenging task since the exact sampling distributions of the maximum likelihood estimators and its variants are not known. Estimation of a gamma scale parameter has received less attention from the earlier researchers compared to shape parameter estimation. What we have observed here is that improved estimation of the shape parameter does not necessarily lead to improved scale estimation if a natural moment condition (which is also the maximum likelihood restriction) is satisfied. Therefore, this work deals with the gamma scale parameter estimation as a separate new problem, not as a by-product of the shape parameter estimation, and studies several estimators in terms of second-order risk.  相似文献

It is shown that the nonparametric two-saniDle test recently proposed by Baumgartner, WeiB, Schindler (1998, Biometrics, 54, 1129-1135) does not control the type I error rate in case of small sample sizes. We investigate the exact permutation test based on their statistic and demonstrate that this test is almost not conservative. Comparing exact tests, the procedure based on the new statistic has a less conservative size and is, according to simulation results, more powerful than the often employed Wilcoxon test. Furthermore, the new test is also powerful with regard to less restrictive settings than the location-shift model. For example, the test can detect location-scale alternatives. Therefore, we use the test to create a powerful modification of the nonparametric location-scale test according to Lepage (1971, Biometrika, 58, 213-217). Selected critical values for the proposed tests are given.  相似文献

Let X have a gamma distribution with known shape parameter θr;aL and unknown scale parameter θ. Suppose it is known that θ ≥ a for some known a > 0. An admissible minimax estimator for scale-invariant squared-error loss is presented. This estimator is the pointwise limit of a sequence of Bayes estimators. Further, the class of truncated linear estimators C = {θρρ(x) = max(a, ρ), ρ > 0} is studied. It is shown that each θρ is inadmissible and that exactly one of them is minimax. Finally, it is shown that Katz's [Ann. Math. Statist., 32, 136–142 (1961)] estimator of θ is not minimax for our loss function. Some further properties of and comparisons among these estimators are also presented.  相似文献
