The authors update the work of Genest (1997, 1999) on world research output in probability and statistics. The rankings they produce of countries and institutions are based on a survey of papers published between 1986 and 2000 in 25 specialized journals of high reputation in these two fields. This comparative study of research productivity and publication habits in probability and statistics completes the paper that was published in this Journal at the end of 1997. It is based on a ten-year survey of eighteen international journals, half of which are specialized in probability theory and the other half in statistics. Paper, author and adjusted page counts yield cursory measures of productivity for countries and institutions that contributed to fundamental research in these two related fields during the period 1986-1995. These data also reveal significant cultural differences between probabilists and statisticians in the volume of research, the length of papers, coauthorship practices, etc. Canada is seen to be one of the strongest contributors to the development of these two disciplines. 相似文献

There is debate within the osteoporosis research community about the relationship between the risk of osteoporotic fracture and the surrogate measures of fracture risk. Meta‐regression analyses based on summary data have shown a linear relationship between fracture risk and surrogate measures, whereas analyses based on individual patient data (IPD) have shown a nonlinear relationship. We investigated the association between changes in a surrogate measure of fracture incidence, in this case a bone turnover marker for resorption assessed in the three risedronate phase III clinical programmes, and incident osteoporosis‐related fracture risk using regression models based on patient‐level and trial‐level information. The relationship between osteoporosis‐related fracture risk and changes in bone resorption was different when analysed on the basis of IPD than when analysed on the basis of a meta‐analytic approach (i.e., meta‐regression) using summary data (e.g., treatment effect based on treatment group estimates). This inconsistency in our findings was consistent with those in the published literature. Meta‐regression based on summary statistics at the trial level is not expected to reflect causal relationships between a clinical outcome and surrogate measures. Analyses based on IPD make possible a more comprehensive analysis since all relevant data on a patient level are available. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. 相似文献

ABSTRACTA number of libraries respond to e-resource access problems by using trouble ticketing systems that track the initial problem report (trouble ticket) along with related correspondence and resolution. University of Maryland, College Park librarians undertook a study of a random sample of e-resource problem trouble tickets to (a) understand the nature of problems reported and the degree of success with which Acquisitions troubleshooting staff were able to meet users' access needs, (b) develop best practices for troubleshooting, and (c) compare University of Maryland results with those of other institutions that have conducted similar studies. While the results suggest recommended local best practices for University of Maryland troubleshooting staff, comparing results across institutions was problematic because of lack of shared vocabulary for e-resource access problem types. 相似文献
