A special class of supersaturated design, called marginally over saturated design (MOSD), in which the number of variables under investigation (k) is only slightly larger than the number of experimental runs (n), is presented. Several optimality criteria for supersaturated designs are discussed. It is shown that the resolution rank criterion is most appropriate for screening situations. The construction method builds on two major theorems which provide an efficient way to evaluate resolution rank. Examples are given for the cases n=8, 12, 16, and 20. Potential extensions for future work are discussed.  相似文献

Two-level designs are useful to examine a large number of factors in an efficient manner. It is typically anticipated that only a few factors will be identified as important ones. The results can then be reanalyzed using a projection of the original design, projected into the space of the factors that matter. An interesting question is how many intrinsically different type of projections are possible from an initial given design. We examine this question here for the Plackett and Burman screening series with N= 12, 20 and 24 runs and projected dimensions k≤5. As a characterization criterion, we look at the number of repeat and mirror-image runs in the projections. The idea can be applied toany two-level design projected into fewer dimensions.  相似文献

A supersaturated design is essentially a fractional factorial design whose number of experimental variables is greater than or equal to its number of experimental runs. Under the effect sparsity assumption, a supersaturated design can be very cost-effective. In this paper, our prime objective is to compare the existing two-level supersaturated designs for the noisy case through the probability of correct searching—a powerful criterion proposed by Shirakura et al. [1996. Searching probabilities for nonzeroeffects in search designs for the noisy case. Ann. Statist. 24, 2560–2568]. A method of constructing a resolvable orthogonal array (4λk2,2) which can be partitioned into λ orthogonal arrays (4,k 2,1) is proposed. The number of constraints kfor this type of orthogonal array is at most 3λ. When λ=2 or a multiple of 4, an orthogonal array with the maximum number of constraints of 3λ can be constructed. When λ=4n+2(n≧1) an orthogonal array with 2λ+2 constraints can be constructed. When λ is an odd number, orthogonal arrays can be constructed for λ=3,5,7, and 9 with k=4,8,12, and 13 respectively.  相似文献

Five nonisomorphic classes of Hadamard matrices of order 16 were given by Hall (1961). Three of these Hadamard classes have a 4 ×4 row and column structure; they generate three nonisomorphic complete sets of nine orthogonal F(4;2,2)-squares, one of which shows a previously unreported pattern. The remaining two Hadamard classes do not produce complete sets of F-squares, Each of the five Hadamard classes corresponds to a distinct set of single-degree-of-freedom contrasts in an analysis of variance.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the construction of optimal blocked main effects designs where m two-level factors are to be studied in N runs which are partitioned into b blocks of equal size. For N ≡ 2±od4 sufficient conditions are derived for a design to be Φ f optimal among all designs having main effects occurring equally often at their high and low levels within blocks and then this result is extended to the class of all designs for the case when the block size is two. The use of covariates in block designs is necessary when the experimental errors cannot be controlled using only the qualitative factors. The choice of values of the covariates for a given set-up attaining minimum variance for estimation of the regression parameters has attracted attention in recent times. In this paper, optimum covariate designs (OCD) have been considered for the set-up of the balanced treatment incomplete block (BTIB) designs, which form an important class of test-control designs. It is seen that the OCDs depend much on the methods of construction of the basic BTIB designs. The series of BTIB designs considered in this paper are mainly those as described by Bechhofer and Tamhane (1981) and Das et al. (2005). Different combinatorial arrangements and tools such as Hadamard matrices and different kinds of products of matrices viz Khatri-Rao product and Kronecker product have been conveniently used to construct OCDs with as many covariates as possible.  相似文献

DEXPERT is an expert system, built using KEE, for the design and analysis of experiments. From a mathematical model, expected mean squares are computed, tests are determined, and the power of the tests computed. Comparisons between designs are aided by suggestions and verbal interpretations provided by DEXPERT. DEXPERT provides a layout sheet for the collection of the data and then analyzes and interprets the results using analytical and graphical methods.  相似文献

Strong orthogonal arrays (SOAs) were recently introduced and studied as a class of space‐filling designs for computer experiments. An important problem that has not been addressed in the literature is that of design selection for such arrays. In this article, we conduct a systematic investigation into this problem, and we focus on the most useful SOA(n,m,4,2 + )s and SOA(n,m,4,2)s. This article first addresses the problem of design selection for SOAs of strength 2+ by examining their three‐dimensional projections. Both theoretical and computational results are presented. When SOAs of strength 2+ do not exist, we formulate a general framework for the selection of SOAs of strength 2 by looking at their two‐dimensional projections. The approach is fruitful, as it is applicable when SOAs of strength 2+ do not exist and it gives rise to them when they do. In this article, we take up the experimental situation of a heteroscedastic one-way layout model in the presence of a set of controllable covariates. For the joint estimation of the elementary contrasts of a set of test treatments with a control and the effects of covariates, sufficient conditions for the existence of an A-optimal design are identified. When these sufficient conditions are not met, we propose highly A-efficient designs. The methods of construction of A-optimal and highly A-efficient designs are discussed. For different values of the parameters of the design, A-efficiency of the proposed designs are tabulated for a comparative study.  相似文献

The cost and time consumption of many industrial experimentations can be reduced using the class of supersaturated designs since this can be used for screening out the important factors from a large set of potentially active variables. A supersaturated design is a design for which there are fewer runs than effects to be estimated. Although there exists a wide study of construction methods for supersaturated designs, their analysis methods are yet in an early research stage. In this article, we propose a method for analyzing data using a correlation-based measure, named as symmetrical uncertainty. This method combines measures from the information theory field and is used as the main idea of variable selection algorithms developed in data mining. In this work, the symmetrical uncertainty is used from another viewpoint in order to determine more directly the important factors. The specific method enables us to use supersaturated designs for analyzing data of generalized linear models for a Bernoulli response. We evaluate our method by using some of the existing supersaturated designs, obtained according to methods proposed by Tang and Wu (1997 Tang , B. , Wu , C. F. J. (1997). In a two-level factorial experiment, we consider orthogonal designs that allow joint estimation of the grand mean, all main effects, and certain classes of two-level interactions, assuming that the remaining effects are all negligible. Based on a judicious allocation of the factorial effects of interest to the columns of a Hadamard matrix, we propose some general classes of orthogonal and saturated designs which include some existing orthogonal main-effect plans of asymmetric factorials as special cases.  相似文献

Summary Despite a very large literature on experimental design there are few papers which discuss the fundamentals, certainly compared to work on statistical inference. This paper tries to address some of the issues in a way which draws together some different fields such as search, group-testing and entropy based methods. An important philosophical distinction is between active and passive observation and examples introduce this subject. There are close connections with the approach tof Taguchi in engineering. This paper, the following discussion, the contribution of R. Fontana and the reply of H. P. Wynn are a result of the seminar hold in Rome, on the 6th October 1993. ABSTRACT

Games can be a powerful tool for learning about statistical methodology. Effective game design involves a fine balance between caricature and realism, to simultaneously illustrate salient concepts in a controlled setting and serve as a testament to real-world applicability. Striking that balance is particularly challenging in response surface and design domains, where real-world scenarios often play out over long time scales, during which theories are revised, model and inferential techniques are improved, and knowledge is updated. Here, I present a game, borrowing liberally from one first played over 40 years ago, which attempts to achieve that balance while reinforcing a cascade of topics in modern nonparametric response surfaces, sequential design, and optimization. The game embeds a blackbox simulation within a shiny app whose interface is designed to simulate a realistic information–availability setting, while offering a stimulating, competitive environment wherein students can try out new methodology, and ultimately appreciate its power and limitations. Interface, rules, timing with course material, and evaluation are described, along with a “case study” involving a cohort of students at Virginia Tech. We present a new experimental design procedure that divides a set of experimental units into two groups in order to minimize error in estimating a treatment effect. One concern is the elimination of large covariate imbalance between the two groups before the experiment begins. Another concern is robustness of the design to misspecification in response models. We address both concerns in our proposed design: we first place subjects into pairs using optimal nonbipartite matching, making our estimator robust to complicated nonlinear response models. Our innovation is to keep the matched pairs extant, take differences of the covariate values within each matched pair, and then use the greedy switching heuristic of Krieger et al. (2019) or rerandomization on these differences. This latter step greatly reduces covariate imbalance. Furthermore, our resultant designs are shown to be nearly as random as matching, which is robust to unobserved covariates. When compared to previous designs, our approach exhibits significant improvement in the mean squared error of the treatment effect estimator when the response model is nonlinear and performs at least as well when the response model is linear. Our design procedure can be found as a method in the open source R package available on CRAN called GreedyExperimentalDesign .  相似文献
