IN the beautiful autumn of 1995, women from all over the world gathered at the NGO Forum of the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing to discuss the ugly topic of "women and violence." An American woman said angrily that domestic violence was "as common as giving birth to babies." The All-China Women＇s Federation （ACWF） and Australian Human Rights Commission （AHRC, a national human rights institution funded by the Australian Government） plan to explore, through pilot projects, the ways of establishing State-level domestic violence crisis- intervention centers and databases, inChina between 2013-2016. In so doing, the organizations hope to provide technical support to China＇s legal institutions, and relevant departments, as they work to prevent and stop domestic violence.

A national drive to encourage men to join in the white ribbon campaign, the world's largest effort to end men's violence against women, was launched in Beijing recently. Sponsored by the United Nations Development Fund for Women(UNIFEM) and the All-China Women's Federation, it aims to enhance public awareness, especially in men, of violence against women and how to eliminate it. Initial activities in the drive focus on training and advising men on appropriate behavior.

Women Promoted Industry at Turn of Century

IN the early years of the Republic of China (1912-1949), a great upsurge to promote industry and commerce spread across the country. Women, who were used to doing spinning and weaving, became involved in this industrialization. In early 1912 women intellectuals wrote newspaper editorials advocating women to initiate industrial and commercial enterprises. They said that women were not suited to work in industries such as the railways, mines, and navigation, but were suited for work in spinning and textile mills, breeding silkworms, raising tea, and working in handicrafts factories. They hoped that women would pool their funds to set up business organizations, improve their lives and become economically independent.

TIMES have changed. Now rather than seeking a good husband, women find solace in good careers and self-reliance, according to a recent Beijing University survey. A 1995 questionnaire of women graduates of Beijing University indicated that more than half the graduates believe women work in order to gain self-reliance in person and economy; 36 percent of these students agreed that women work in order to show their power, make a contribution to society and realize their own value. The survey of 1,254 people was conducted by Beijing University's "Women's Issues Research Center."
