The commonly used survey technique of clustering introduces dependence into sample data. Such data is frequently used in economic analysis, though the dependence induced by the sample structure of the data is often ignored. In this paper, the effect of clustering on the non-parametric, kernel estimate of the density, f(x), is examined. The window width commonly used for density estimation for the case of i.i.d. data is shown to no longer be optimal. A new optimal bandwidth using a higher-order kernel is proposed and is shown to give a smaller integrated mean squared error than two window widths which are widely used for the case of i.i.d. data. MODEL-BASED VARIANCE ESTIMATION IN SURVEYS WITH STRATIFIED CLUSTERED DESIGN   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A model-based method for estimating the sampling variances of estimators of (sub-)population means, proportions, quantiles, and regression parameters in surveys with stratified clustered design is described and applied to a survey of US secondary education. The method is compared with the jackknife by a simulation study. The model-based estimators of the sampling variances have much smaller mean squared errors than their jackknife counterparts. In addition, they can be improved by incorporating information about the unknown parameters (variances) from external sources. A regression-based smoothing method for estimating the sampling variances of the estimators for a large number of subpopulation means is proposed. Such smoothing may be invaluable when subpopulations are represented in the sample by only few subjects.  相似文献

The problem of testing the hypothesis of equality of covariance matrices in the presence of two-stage sampling is considered. Asymptotic test procedures based on linearization, grouping and jackknifing with or without transformation are proposed. The finite sample properties of these procedures are investigated in sampling experiments both from simulated known distributions and from a natural population.  相似文献

This paper presents a compact and efficient method for computing MINQUE and restricted maximum likelihood estimates of variance components for hierarchical classification models. The method does not require storage of large matrices and consequently removes limitations on the size of the structure, Ibcperience indicates that iterative MINQUE computations converge very rapidly to the restricted maximum likelihood estimates.  相似文献

Parameter estimation based on truncated data is dealt with; the data are assumed to obey truncated exponential distributions with a variety of truncation time—a 1 data are obtained by truncation time b 1, a 2 data are obtained by truncation time b 2 and so on, whereas the underlying distribution is the same exponential one. The purpose of the present paper is to give existence conditions of the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) and to show some properties of the MLEs in two cases: 1) the grouped and truncated data are given (that is, the data each express the number of the data value falling in a corresponding subinterval), 2) the continuous and truncated data are given.  相似文献

We consider the problem of semi-parametric regression modelling when the data consist of a collection of short time series for which measurements within series are correlated. The objective is to estimate a regression function of the form E[Y(t) | x] =x'ß+μ(t), where μ(.) is an arbitrary, smooth function of time t, and x is a vector of explanatory variables which may or may not vary with t. For the non-parametric part of the estimation we use a kernel estimator with fixed bandwidth h. When h is chosen without reference to the data we give exact expressions for the bias and variance of the estimators for β and μ(t) and an asymptotic analysis of the case in which the number of series tends to infinity whilst the number of measurements per series is held fixed. We also report the results of a small-scale simulation study to indicate the extent to which the theoretical results continue to hold when h is chosen by a data-based cross-validation method.  相似文献

In most parametric statistical analyses, knowledge of the distribution of the response variable, or of the errors, is important. As this distribution is not typically known with certainty, one might initially construct a histogram or estimate the density of the variable of interest to gain insight regarding the distribution and its characteristics. However, when the response variable is incomplete, a histogram will only provide a representation of the distribution of the observed data. In the AIDS Clinical Trial Study protocol 175, interest lies in the difference in CD4 counts from baseline to final follow-up, but CD4 counts collected at final follow-up were incomplete. A method is therefore proposed for estimating the density of an incomplete response variable when auxiliary data are available. The proposed estimator is based on the Horvitz–Thompson estimator, and the propensity scores are estimated nonparametrically. Simulation studies indicate that the proposed estimator performs well.  相似文献

This article describes a unified approach to variance modeling and inference in the context of a general form of the normal-theory linear mixed model. The primary variance modeling objects are parameterized covari-ance structures, examples being diagonal, compound-symmetry, unstructured, timeseries, and spatial. These structures can enter in two different places in the general mixed model, and the combination of one or both of these places with the variety of structures provides a rich class of variance models. The approach is likelihood-based, and involves the use of both maximum likelihood and restricted maximum likelihood. Two examples provide illustration.  相似文献

Moment estimators for parameters in a truncated bivariate Poisson distribution are derived in Hamdan (1972) for the special case of λ1 = λ2, Where λ1, λ2 are the marginal means. Here we derive the maximum likelihood estimators for this special case. The information matrix is also obtained which provides asymptotic covariance matrix of the maximum likelihood estimators. The asymptotic covariance matrix of moment estimators is also derived. The asymptotic efficiency of moment estimators is computed and found to be very low.  相似文献

For remotely sensed data, this paper reviews the Bayesian approach to the allocation of picture elements (pixels) to groups. Group labels are assumed a priori to be spatially correlated and, conditional on the labels, the image data are also assumed to be spatially correlated. The models considered have the property that the posterior distribution of the pixel labels given the image data inherits conditional independence constraints. Two allocation algorithms which exploit this fad are discussed. These algorithms are based on maximising the posterior distribution, and involve the use of neighbouring image and label data to update the label of any given pixel. The effect of spatial correlation in the image data on allocation performance is examined.  相似文献

In this note we examine the problem of estimating the mean of a Poisson distribution when a nuisance parameter is present. Using a condition of Cox (1958) about ancillarity in the presence of a nuisance parameter, we justify that inference about the parameter should be carried out using the conditional distribution given the appropriate ancillary statistics. A small simulation study has been done to compare the performance of the conditional likelihood approach and the standard likelihood approach.  相似文献

A simulation study of the binomial-logit model with correlated random effects is carried out based on the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) methodology. Simulated data with various numbers of regression parameters and different values of the variance component are considered. The performance of approximate maximum likelihood (ML) and residual maximum likelihood (REML) estimators is evaluated. For a range of true parameter values, we report the average biases of estimators, the standard error of the average bias and the standard error of estimates over the simulations. In general, in terms of bias, the two methods do not show significant differences in estimating regression parameters. The REML estimation method is slightly better in reducing the bias of variance component estimates.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the inclusion of random effects in both the survival function for at-risk subjects and the cure probability assuming a bivariate normal distribution for those effects in each cluster. For parameter estimation, we implemented the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) approach. We consider Weibull and Piecewise Exponential distributions to model the survival function for non-cured individuals. Simulation studies are performed, and based on a real database we evaluate the performance of our proposed model. Effect of different follow-up times and the effect of considering independent random effects instead of bivariate random effects are also studied.  相似文献

We apply the method of McCullagh & Tibshirani (1990) to a generalization of the model for variance components in which the parameter of interest can appear in both the mean and variance. We obtain the exact adjusted profile log-likelihood score function. For the variance components model, we obtain the adjusted profile log-likelihood and show that it equals the restricted log-likelihood of Patterson & Thompson (1971). We discuss an example due to Kempton (1982) of a regression model with autoregressive terms in which the parameter of interest appears in both the mean and variance.  相似文献

The analysis of word frequency count data can be very useful in authorship attribution problems. Zero-truncated generalized inverse Gaussian–Poisson mixture models are very helpful in the analysis of these kinds of data because their model-mixing density estimates can be used as estimates of the density of the word frequencies of the vocabulary. It is found that this model provides excellent fits for the word frequency counts of very long texts, where the truncated inverse Gaussian–Poisson special case fails because it does not allow for the large degree of over-dispersion in the data. The role played by the three parameters of this truncated GIG-Poisson model is also explored. Our second goal is to compare the fit of the truncated GIG-Poisson mixture model with the fit of the model that results from switching the order of the mixing and truncation stages. A heuristic interpretation of the mixing distribution estimates obtained under this alternative GIG-truncated Poisson mixture model is also provided.  相似文献

A brief history of the early years (1820-1947) of random effects models and the estimation of variance components is followed by a personal evaluation of M.L, REML and MINQUE estimation. A method is suggested for combining ML estimator obtained from subsets of a large data set, and comments are made on the need for simulation studies to assess the degree of approximation in using asymptotic properties of ML-type estimators as if they were exact for finite-sized unbalanced data sets.  相似文献
