Energy distance is a statistical distance between the distributions of random vectors, which characterizes equality of distributions. The name energy derives from Newton's gravitational potential energy, and there is an elegant relation to the notion of potential energy between statistical observations. Energy statistics are functions of distances between statistical observations in metric spaces. Thus even if the observations are complex objects, like functions, one can use their real valued nonnegative distances for inference. Theory and application of energy statistics are discussed and illustrated. Finally, we explore the notion of potential and kinetic energy of goodness-of-fit.  相似文献

Arthur Geissler's data for the distribution of the sexes in families with eight children, published in 1889, became famous through its use by R. A. Fisher in Statistical Methods for Research Workers in 1925 as an example of the binomial distribution. Geissler compiled data from Saxony for the period 1876-1885 for all family sizes. We determine the joint pdf of Yi:nYi:n and Y[j:n]Y[j:n] for all i,j=1i,j=1 to nn, and establish some symmetry properties of the joint distribution for symmetric populations. We discuss the uses of the joint distribution in the computation of moments and probabilities of various ranks for Y[j:n]Y[j:n]. We also show how our results can be used to determine the expected cost of mismatch in broken bivariate samples and approximate the first two moments of the ratios of linear functions of Yi:nYi:n and Y[j:n]Y[j:n]. For the bivariate normal case, we compute the expectations of the product of Yi:nYi:n and Y[i:n]Y[i:n] for n=2n=2 to 8 for selected values of the correlation coefficient and illustrate their uses.  相似文献

In this paper, a new simple method for jackknifing two-sample statistics is proposed. The method is based on a two-step procedure. In the first step, the point estimator is calculated by leaving one X (or Y) out at a time. At the second step, the point estimator obtained in the first step is further jackknifed, leaving one Y (or X) out at a time, resulting in a simple formula for the proposed point estimator. It is shown that by using the two-step procedure, the bias of the point estimator is reduced in terms of asymptotic order, from O(n−1) up to O(n−2), under certain regularity conditions. This conclusion is also confirmed empirically in terms of finite sample numerical examples via a small-scale simulation study. We also discuss the idea of asymptotic bias to obtain parallel results without imposing some conditions that may be difficult to check or too restrictive in practice.  相似文献

Students in elementary statistics traditionally see experiments and data as words and numbers in a text. They receive little exposure to the important statistical activities of sample selection, data collection, experimental design, development of statistical models, the need for randomization, selection of factors, etc. They often leave the first course without a firm understanding of the role of applied statistics or of the statistician in scientific investigations. In an attempt to improve elementary statistics education, we have developed a statistics laboratory similar to those of other elementary science courses. We will discuss our experiences in teaching a laboratory component with the traditional elementary statistics course. In each lab session, students, working in teams, discuss the design of an experiment, carry out the experiment, and analyze their data using Minitab on a Macintosh or MS-DOS based computer. The students then individually either answer a series of short answer questions or write a formal scientific report. The labs are designed to be relatively inexpensive and portable. They do not require a prior background in science, statistics or computing.  相似文献

The paper gives a highly personal sketch of some current trends in statistical inference. After an account of the challenges that new forms of data bring, there is a brief overview of some topics in stochastic modelling. The paper then turns to sparsity, illustrated using Bayesian wavelet analysis based on a mixture model and metabolite profiling. Modern likelihood methods including higher order approximation and composite likelihood inference are then discussed, followed by some thoughts on statistical education.  相似文献
