This paper presents sharp bounds for expectations of non‐adjacent increments of kth record statistics, measured in various scale units, for a sequence of independent identically distributed random variables with continuous cumulative distribution function. The results for kth record spacings are considered as special cases. The paper also characterizes probability distributions for which the bounds are attained.  相似文献

Trimmed means remove outliers but affect the estimation efficiency in uncontaminated samples. This paper provides and analyses sharp upper and lower bounds on the bias in the non–parametric estimation of population means by various trimmed means in different scale units. ABSTRACT

We derive sharp upper and lower projection bounds on the bias of two-sided Winsorized means. To determine the projection of appropriate function, we consider new analytic condition which describes the form of the corresponding greatest convex minorant. Then we compare numerically obtained bounds for trimmed and Winsorized means. We conclude that if we have no information about the underlying distribution then Winsorized means are better than the trimmed ones.  相似文献

We establish the upper nonpositive and all the lower bounds on the expectations of generalized order statistics based on a given distribution function with the finite mean and central absolute moment of a fixed order. We also describe the distributions for which the bounds are attained. The methods of deriving the lower nonpositive (upper nonnegative) and lower nonnegative (upper nonpositive) bounds are totally different. The first one, the greatest convex minorant method is the combination of the Moriguti and well-known Hölder inequalities and the latter one is based on the maximization of some norm on the properly chosen convex set. The paper completes the results of Cramer et al. [Evaluations of expected generalized order statistics in various scale units. Appl Math. 2002;29:285–295].  相似文献

Maximum likelihood estimates of ordered means of two normal distributions having common variance have been shown to be better than the usual maximum likelihood estimates (i.e. corresponding sample means) with respect to Pitman Nearness criterion. The maximum likelihood estimate of common variance taking into consideration the order restriction of the means is shown to have smaller mean square error than the unrestricted maximum likelihood estimate of the common variance. These two estimators have also been compared with respect to Pitman Nearness criterion.  相似文献

Consider estimation of a unit vector parameter a in two classes of distributions. In the first, α is a direction. In the second, α is an axis, so that –α and α are equivalent: the aim is to obtain the projector ααt. In each case the paper uses first principles to define measures of the divergence of such estimators and derives lower bounds for them. These bounds are computed explicitly for the Fisher-Von Mises and Scheidegger-Watson densities on the g-dimensional sphere, ωq. This paper draws together bounds for the efficiency factor of block designs, starting with the papers of Conniffe & Stone (1974) and Williams & Patterson (1977). By extending the methods of Jarrett (1983), firstly to cover supercomplete block designs and then to cover resolvable designs, a set of bounds is obtained which provides the best current bounds for any block design with equal replication and equal block size, including resolvable designs and two-replicate resolvable designs as special cases. The bounds given for non-resolvable designs apply strictly only to designs which are either regular-graph (John & Mitchell, 1977) or whose duals are regular-graph. It is conjectured (John & Williams, 1982) that they are in fact global bounds. Similar qualifications apply to the bounds for resolvable designs.  相似文献

Kale and Sinha (1971) have found an estimator of the mean of an exponential distribution in the présence of an outlying observation with higher expected value. Here an alternative estimator of the mean is proposed and it is compared with the estimator of Kale and Sinha (1971) and the maximum likelihood estimator given by Kale (1975). The proposed estimator is found to be more efficient than the latter two estimators in some cases.  相似文献

We propose a method for simultaneously estimating a density function and its derivatives based on a recursive reduction of bias in the usual one-step estimator—in effect, a jackknife. By adopting; the Bayesian method, we develop in this paper some robust procedures for the one and two-sample location problems based on symmetric Type-II censored samples and by assuming normality for the censored samples. In this paper we give some properties of the expected values of any order statistic when one of its adjacent order statistics is known (order mean function) from a sequence of sizen of independent and identically distributed random variables with discrete distribution. Furthermore, we obtain the explicit expressions of the distribution from these order mean functions, and finally, we show the necessary and sufficient conditions for any real function to be an order mean function. We also add some examples of characterization of discrete distributions from the order mean functions. The paper makes two contributions. First, we provide a formula for the exact distribution of the periodogram evaluated at any arbitrary frequency, when the sample is taken from any zero-mean stationary Gaussian process. The inadequacy of the asymptotic distribution is demonstrated through an example in which the observations are generated by a fractional Gaussian noise process. The results are then applied in deriving the exact bias of the log-periodogram regression estimator (Geweke and Porter-Hudak (1983), Robinson (1995)). The formula is computable. Practical bounds on this bias are developed and their arithmetic mean is shown to be accurate and useful.  相似文献

Recent work has considered properties of the number of observations Xj, independently drawn from a discrete law, which equal the sample maximum X(n) The natural analogue for continuous laws is the number Kn(a) of observations in the interval (X(n)a, X(n)], where a > 0. This paper derives general expressions for the law, first moment, and probability generating function of Kn(a), mentioning examples where evaluations can be given. It seeks limit laws for n→ and finds a central limit result when a is fixed and the population law has a finite right extremity. Whenever the population law is attracted to an extremal law, a limit theorem can be found by letting a depend on n in an appropriate manner; thus the limit law is geometric when the extremal law is the Gumbel type. With these results, the paper obtains limit laws for ‘top end’ spacings X(n) - X(n-j) with j fixed.  相似文献

For a wide class of semi-Markov decision processes the optimal policies are expressible in terms of the Gittins indices, which have been found useful in sequential clinical trials and pharmaceutical research planning. In general, the indices can be approximated via calibration based on dynamic programming of finite horizon. This paper provides some results on the accuracy of such approximations, and, in particular, gives the error bounds for some well known processes (Bernoulli reward processes, normal reward processes and exponential target processes).  相似文献
