Objectives: The objectives of this study were to: (1) examine changes in stress during first semester among freshmen undergraduates and (2) identify predictors of stress (coping strategies, emotional states, and quality of sleep). Participants: One hundred ninety-seven freshmen students were recruited for a 10-week study during first quarter (October–December, 2015). Methods: Students completed weekly self-report surveys on stress, coping strategies, emotions, and quality of sleep. A generalized linear mixed model was used for analyses. Results: Stress was elevated during examinations periods. Women reported a greater stress level than men. Increased stress level was significantly associated with lower sleep quality and greater negative emotions (fear, anger). Exercise was an effective stress coping strategy, while other coping methods (Internet usage, meditation, and self-isolation) were associated with higher stress. Social media usage did not influence stress level. Conclusions: Future stress management programs for freshmen need to consider gender differences and may focus on sleep, exercise, and decreased general Internet usage.  相似文献

Conscious listening strategies cultivation is believed to be contributive to enhance learners' listening ability. This paper aims to research the effect of these listening strategies by conducting an experimental study among freshmen in SWUFE. The theory of representative bureaucracy suggests that organizationsperform better if their workforces reflect the characteristicsof their constituent populations. The management literatureimplies that the impact of representative bureaucracy is contingenton organizational strategy. Our empirical evidence on Englishlocal government is inconsistent with the basic theory of representativebureaucracy but supports a moderating effect of organizationalstrategy. Representative bureaucracy is negatively associatedwith citizens' perceptions of local authority performance. However,organizations pursuing a prospector strategy are able to mitigatethis negative relationship.  相似文献

Note taking (NT) in lectures is as active a skill as listening, which stimulates it, and as challenging as writing, which is the end product. Literature on lecture NT misses an integration of the processes involved in listening with those in NT. In this article, a taxonomy is proposed of lecture NT skills and subskills based on a similar list developed for listening comprehension skills, which is in turn based on a taxonomy of reading comprehension skills proposed by Ferguson (1973) and Gray (1960). The proposed list can shed light on the complexity of the skill of NT in lectures and help teachers provide systematic, brief, and controlled skills training for their students, especially L2 college or university freshmen.  相似文献

通过刻录光盘和问卷调查的方法,对采用“以学生为中心的主题教学模式”的英语专业精读课堂教师引导、学生交互、活动方式等方面进行系统分析。研究结果表明,与以教师为主导的传统教学方法相比,以学生为中心的主题教学模式能更充分调动学习者的主观能动性和创造性,给学习者提供更多的双向交际的机会,营造一个更好的语言习得环境,因而更有利于英语专业学生的语言习得,提高语言综合应用的实践能力。  相似文献

Listening is regarded as a key requirement for successful communication and is fundamentally linked to other language skills. Unlike reading, it requires both hearing and processing information in real-time. We therefore propose that the ability to concentrate is a strong predictor of listening comprehension. Using structural equation modeling, concentration was found to be a strong predictor of listening comprehension in a sample of 345 sixth graders in Switzerland. In contrast, the ability to concentrate did not predict successful reading comprehension. The most important predictor of both listening and reading comprehension was vocabulary.  相似文献

The Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) program measures value added in colleges and universities, by testing the ability of freshmen and seniors to think logically and write clearly. The program is popular enough that it has attracted critics. In this paper, we outline the methods used by the CLA to determine value added. We summarize the criticisms, which revolve around the question of which students take the CLA tests. Typically, samples are not random, so that selection bias is a concern, as is confounding. We respond by showing that criticisms of CLA procedures are not supported by the data.  相似文献

Invasive disease secondary to Neisseria meningitidis is a rare but devastating illness among university students. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends educating college freshmen about meningococcal disease and vaccinating all college freshmen who live in residence halls. During the introduction of bachelor degrees to the acadamic year 2006–2007, the faculty for social sciences and philosophy at the University of Leipzig conducted a survey among freshmen. The study focused particularly on students’ motives for starting their studies at a university, for choosing a particular university and on their intentions to complete a master’s degree later on. Furthermore, data on freshmen’s age structure, study and work experience and geographical provenance were collected. The data analysis showed that extrinsic motives related to future occupational status prevailed among the freshmen. Among the relevant motives for choosing a university were also proximity to a students hometown, the attractiveness of the university’s location and its reputation. While it could not be clarified whether there was a relation between tuition fees and the choice of university, there was a clear trend among students to a master’s degree. More than two thirds of the freshmen felt certain that they would do one after their bachelor.  相似文献

The social work department at a small historically Black college implemented an African-centered approach to the course Critical Thinking for Social Workers for freshmen students who declared social work as their major. We firmly believe that knowing and understanding the history and legacy of people of African descent is extremely important in educating African American students. Various pedagogical techniques, assignments, and intentional lecture topics were used in the implementation of this unique teaching style. This article reports the findings from using the African-centered approach in pedagogy and offers implications for social work education in the 21st century for historically Black colleges and universities and other programs with minority student populations.  相似文献

VI scale items of My Vocational Situation for entering freshmen at a midwestern university were analyzed using a cluster analysis technique. Four major clusters were identified suggesting that vocational identity as measured by the VI scale is not a unitary construct. Discussion focused on the possible use of the procedures and results. One possible use suggested was by career planning and placement personnel in planning career programs and services. Another possible use suggested was by counselors who could use the information about entering freshmen's vocational identity in individual counseling.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Researchers have previously reported that law students and medical students experience significant distress during their first year. The authors suspected that freshmen undergraduates might experience similar distress in their transition to college. PARTICIPANTS: They surveyed 242 undergraduate freshmen at the beginning and end of their first year. METHODS: The authors asked participants about their physical health, alcohol use and smoking habits, stress levels, perfectionism, self-esteem, coping tactics, optimism, extroversion, and psychological adaptation to college. RESULTS: Data replicated the declines reported in law and medical students' psychological and physical health. Negative coping tactics and perfectionism predicted poorer physical health and alcohol use at the end of the year; however, optimism and self-esteem predicted better physical and psychological outcomes. CONCLUSION: Future researchers should investigate steps that college administrators can take to help to alleviate some of these problems, such as offering workshops on stress relief to incoming freshmen.  相似文献
