Several recurrence relations and identities available for single and product moments of order1 statistics in a sample size n from an arbitrary continuous distribution are extended for the discrete case,, Making use of these recurrence relations it is shown that it is sufficient to evaluate just two single moments and (n-l)/2 product moments when n is odd and two single moments and {n-2)/2 product moments when n is even, in order to evaluate the first, second and product moments of order statistics in a sample of size n drawn from an arbitrary discrete distribution, given these moments in samples of sizes n-1 and less.. A series representation for the product moments of order statistics is derived.. Besides enabling us to obtain an exact and explicit expression for the product moments of order statistics from the geometric distribution, it. makes the computation of the product moments of order statistics from other discrete distributions easy too.  相似文献

The logistic distribution is a simple distribution possessing many useful properties and has been used extensively for analyzing growth. Recently, van Staden and King proposed a quantile-based skew logistic distribution. In this paper, we introduce an alternative skew logistic distribution. We then establish recurrence relations for the computation of the single and product moments of order statistics from the standard skew logistic distribution by using the moments of order statistics from the standard half logistic distribution. These enable an efficient computation of means, variances and covariances of order statistics from the skew logistic distibution for all sample sizes. The results become useful in determining the best linear unbiased estimators of the location and scale paramters of the skew logistic distribution. Finally, we provide an example to illustrate the usefulness of the developed model and then compare its fit with that provided by the model of van Staden and King.  相似文献

In this paper, we derive several new recurrence relations and indentities satisfied by the single and the product moments of order statistics from a sample of size n in the presence of an outlier. These recurrence relations involve the first two single moments and the product moments in samples of sized n?1 and less. By making use of these recurrence relations we show that it is sufficient to evaluate at most two single rerents and (n?2)/2 product moment when n is even and two single moments and (n?2)/2 product moments when n is odd, in order to evaluate the first and second single moments and product moments of all order statistics in a sample of size n comprising an outlier, given these moments for the all sample of size less than n. These generalize the results of Govindarajulu (1963), Joshi (1971), and Joshi and Balakrishnan (1982) to the case when the sample includes a single outlier. We also establish some simple identitites involving linear combination of convariances of order statistics. These results can be effectively used to reduce the amount of numerical computation considerably and also to check the accuracy of the computations while evaluating means, variances and covariances of order statistics from an outlier model.  相似文献

The negative binomial distribution offers an alternative view to the binomial distribution for modeling count data. This alternative view is particularly useful when the probability of success is very small, because, unlike the fixed sampling scheme of the binomial distribution, the inverse sampling approach allows one to collect enough data in order to adequately estimate the proportion of success. However, despite work that has been done on the joint estimation of two binomial proportions from independent samples, there is little, if any, similar work for negative binomial proportions. In this paper, we construct and investigate three confidence regions for two negative binomial proportions based on three statistics: the Wald (W), score (S) and likelihood ratio (LR) statistics. For large-to-moderate sample sizes, this paper finds that all three regions have good coverage properties, with comparable average areas for large sample sizes but with the S method producing the smaller regions for moderate sample sizes. In the small sample case, the LR method has good coverage properties, but often at the expense of comparatively larger areas. Finally, we apply these three regions to some real data for the joint estimation of liver damage rates in patients taking one of two drugs.  相似文献

The most common strategy for comparing two independent groups is in terms of some measure of location intended to reflect the typical observation. However, it can be informative and important to compare the lower and upper quantiles as well, but when there are tied values, extant techniques suffer from practical concerns reviewed in the paper. For the special case where the goal is to compare the medians, a slight generalization of the percentile bootstrap method performs well in terms of controlling Type I errors when there are tied values [Wilcox RR. Comparing medians. Comput. Statist. Data Anal. 2006;51:1934–1943]. But our results indicate that when the goal is to compare the quartiles, or quantiles close to zero or one, this approach is highly unsatisfactory when the quantiles are estimated using a single order statistic or a weighted average of two order statistics. The main result in this paper is that when using the Harrell–Davis estimator, which uses all of the order statistics to estimate a quantile, control over the Type I error probability can be achieved in simulations, even when there are tied values, provided the sample sizes are not too small. It is demonstrated that this method can also have substantially higher power than the distribution free method derived by Doksum and Sievers [Plotting with confidence: graphical comparisons of two populations. Biometrika 1976;63:421–434]. Data from two studies are used to illustrate the practical advantages of the method studied here.  相似文献

In this paper, tests for the skewness parameter of the two-piece double exponential distribution are derived when the location parameter is unknown. Classical tests like Neyman structure test and likelihood ratio test (LRT), that are generally used to test hypotheses in the presence of nuisance parameters, are not feasible for this distribution since the exact distributions of the test statistics become very complicated. As an alternative, we identify a set of statistics that are ancillary for the location parameter. When the scale parameter is known, Neyman–Pearson's lemma is used, and when the scale parameter is unknown, the LRT is applied to the joint density function of ancillary statistics, in order to obtain a test for the skewness parameter of the distribution. Test for symmetry of the distribution can be deduced as a special case. It is found that power of the proposed tests for symmetry is only marginally less than the power of corresponding classical optimum tests when the location parameter is known, especially for moderate and large sample sizes.  相似文献

In this paper, we construct a new ranked set sampling protocol that maximizes the Pitman asymptotic efficiency of the signed rank test. The new sampling design is a function of the set size and independent order statistics. If the set size is odd and the underlying distribution is symmetric and unimodal, then the new sampling protocol quantifies only the middle observation. On the other hand, if the set size is even, the new sampling design quantifies the two middle observations. This data collection procedure for use in the signed rank test outperforms the data collection procedure in the standard ranked set sample. We show that the exact null distribution of the signed rank statistic WRSS+ based on a data set generated by the new ranked set sample design for odd set sizes is the same as the null distribution of the simple random sample signed rank statistic WSRS+ based on the same number of measured observations. For even set sizes, the exact null distribution of WRSS+ is simulated.  相似文献

By considering order statistics arising from n independent non-identically distributed right-truncated exponential random variables, we derive in this paper several recurrence relations for the single and the product moments of order statistics. These recurrence relations are simple in nature and could be used systematically in order to compute all the single and the product moments of order statistics for all sample sizes in a simple recursive manner. The results for order statistics from a multiple-outlier model (with a slippage of p observations) from a right-truncated exponential population are deduced as special cases. These results will be useful in assessing robustness properties of any linear estimator of the unknown parameter of the right-truncated exponential distribution, in the presence of one or more outliers in the sample. These results generalize those for the order statistics arising from an i.i.d. sample from a right-truncated exponential population established by Joshi (1978, 1982).  相似文献

In many practical situations, order statistics arise naturally with random sample size. In this article, we review results on partial orderings and aging properties of such order statistics. The comparison of order statistics for different sample sizes is also discussed here.  相似文献

In applications of generalized order statistics as, for instance, reliability analysis of engineering systems, prior knowledge about the order of the underlying model parameters is often available and may therefore be incorporated in inferential procedures. Taking this information into account, we establish the likelihood ratio test, Rao's score test, and Wald's test for test problems arising from the question of appropriate model selection for ordered data, where simple order restrictions are put on the parameters under the alternative hypothesis. For simple and composite null hypothesis, explicit representations of the corresponding test statistics are obtained along with some properties and their asymptotic distributions. A simulation study is carried out to compare the order restricted tests in terms of their power. In the set-up considered, the adapted tests significantly improve the power of the associated omnibus versions for small sample sizes, especially when testing a composite null hypothesis.  相似文献

This paper elaborates on earlier contributions of Bross (1985) and Millard (1987) who point out that when conducting conventional hypothesis tests in order to “prove” environmental hazard or environmental safety, unrealistically large sample sizes are required to achieve acceptable power with customarily-used values of Type I error probability. These authors also note that “proof of safety” typically requires much larger sample sizes than “proof of hazard”. When the sample has yet to be selected and it is feared that the sample size will be insufficient to conduct a reasonable.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of unbiased estimation of the distribution function of an exponential population using order statistics based on a random sample. We present a (unique) unbiased estimator based on a single, say ith, order statistic and study some properties of the estimator for i = 2. We also indicate how this estimator can be utilized to obtain unbiased estimators when a few selected order statistics are available as well as when the sample is selected following an alternative sampling procedure known as ranked set sampling. It is further proved that for a ranked set sample of size two, the proposed estimator is uniformly better than the conventional nonparametric unbiased estimator, further, for a general sample size, a modified ranked set sampling procedure provides an unbiased estimator uniformly better than the conventional nonparametric unbiased estimator based on the usual ranked set sampling procedure.  相似文献

In this paper, we review several recurrence relations and identities established for the single and product moments of order statistics from an arbitrary continuous distribution. We point out the interrelationships between many of these recurrence relations. We discuss the results giving the bounds for the number of single and double integrals needed to be evaluated in order to compute the first, second and product moments of order statistics in a sample of size n from an arbitrary continuous distribution, given these moments in samples of sizes n-1 and less. Improvements of these bounds for the case of symmetric continuous distributions are also discussed  相似文献

The odd Weibull distribution is a three-parameter generalization of the Weibull and the inverse Weibull distributions having rich density and hazard shapes for modeling lifetime data. This paper explored the odd Weibull parameter regions having finite moments and examined the relation to some well-known distributions based on skewness and kurtosis functions. The existence of maximum likelihood estimators have shown with complete data for any sample size. The proof for the uniqueness of these estimators is given only when the absolute value of the second shape parameter is between zero and one. Furthermore, elements of the Fisher information matrix are obtained based on complete data using a single integral representation which have shown to exist for any parameter values. The performance of the odd Weibull distribution over various density and hazard shapes is compared with generalized gamma distribution using two different test statistics. Finally, analysis of two data sets has been performed for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

This article compares the accuracy of the median unbiased estimator with that of the maximum likelihood estimator for a logistic regression model with two binary covariates. The former estimator is shown to be uniformly more accurate than the latter for small to moderately large sample sizes and a broad range of parameter values. In view of the recently developed efficient algorithms for generating exact distributions of sufficient statistics in binary-data problems, these results call for a serious consideration of median unbiased estimation as an alternative to maximum likelihood estimation, especially when the sample size is not large, or when the data structure is sparse.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Additional critical points are presented for the Steel–Dwass–Critchlow–Fligner distribution-free multiple comparison procedure for comparing all pairs of three population medians in the one-way layout. A computational technique developed by van de Wiel is used to find critical points yielding an experimentwise error rate of approximately 0.01, 0.05, and 0.10 for a total sample size of at most 30, with individual sample sizes from 4 to 10 and a maximum sample size of at least 8, and for equal sample sizes from 8 to 14. Additional discussion is given regarding step-down testing methods and the dangers of using the Steel–Dwass–Critchlow–Fligner procedure with unequal sample sizes if two of the sample sizes are very small.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the generalized exponential distribution (GED) with shape parameter α. We establish several recurrence relations satisfied by the single and the product moments for order statistics from the GED. The relationships can be written in terms of polygamma and hypergeometric functions and used in a simple recursive manner in order to compute the single and the product moments of all order statistics for all sample sizes.  相似文献

The complementary exponential–geometric distribution has been proposed recently as a simple and useful reliability model for analysing lifetime data. For this distribution, some recurrence relations are established for the single and product moments of order statistics. These recurrence relations enable the computation of the means, variances and covariances of all order statistics for all sample sizes in a simple and efficient recursive manner. By using these relations, we have tabulated the means, variances and covariances of order statistics from samples of sizes up to 10 for various values of the shape parameter θ. These values are in turn used to determine the best linear unbiased estimator of the scale parameter β based on complete and Type-II right-censored samples.  相似文献

In this paper, we establish several recurrence relations for the single and product moments of progressively Type-II right censored order statistics from a logistic distribution. The use of these relations in a systematic manner allows us to compute all the means, variances and covariances of progressively Type-II right censored order statistics from the logistic distribution for all sample sizes n, effective sample sizes m, and all progressive censoring schemes (R1,…,Rm). The results established here generalize the corresponding results for the usual order statistics due to [Shah, 1966] and [Shah, 1970]. These moments are then utilized to derive best linear unbiased estimators of the location and scale parameters of the logistic distribution. A comparison of these estimators with the maximum likelihood estimations is then made. The best linear unbiased predictors of censored failure times are briefly discussed. Finally, an illustrative example is presented.  相似文献
