In this paper, a robust extreme ranked set sampling (RERSS) procedure for estimating the population mean is introduced. It is shown that the proposed method gives an unbiased estimator with smaller variance, provided the underlying distribution is symmetric. However, for asymmetric distributions a weighted mean is given, where the optimal weights are computed by using Shannon's entropy. The performance of the population mean estimator is discussed along with its properties. Monte Carlo simulations are used to demonstrate the performance of the RERSS estimator relative to the simple random sample (SRS), ranked set sampling (RSS) and extreme ranked set sampling (ERSS) estimators. The results indicate that the proposed estimator is more efficient than the estimators based on the traditional sampling methods.  相似文献

A ranked set sampling procedure with unequal samples for positively skew distributions (RSSUS) is proposed and used to estimate the population mean. The estimators based on RSSUS are compared with the estimators based on ranked set sampling (RSS) and median ranked set sampling (MRSS) procedures. It is observed that the relative precisions of the estimators based on RSSUS are higher than those of the estimators based on RSS and MRSS procedures.  相似文献

In this paper, double robust extreme ranked set sampling (DRERSS) and its properties for estimating the population mean are considered. It turns out that, when the underlying distribution is symmetric, DRERSS gives unbiased estimators of the population mean. Also, it is found that DRERSS is more efficient than the simple random sampling (SRS), ranked set sampling (RSS), and extreme ranked set sampling (ERSS) methods. For asymmetric distributions considered in this study, the DRERSS has a small bias and it is more efficient than SRS, RSS, and ERSS. A real data set is used to illustrate the DRERSS method.  相似文献

In this article, a robust ranked set sampling (LRSS) scheme for estimating population mean is introduced. The proposed method is a generalization for many types of ranked set sampling that introduced in the literature for estimating the population mean. It is shown that the LRSS method gives unbiased estimator for the population mean with minimum variance providing that the underlying distribution is symmetric. However, for skewed distributions a weighted mean is given, where the optimal weights is computed by using Shannon's entropy. The performance of the population mean estimator is discussed along with its properties. Monte Carlo comparisons for detecting outliers are made with the traditional simple random sample and the ranked set sampling for some distributions. The results indicate that the LRSS estimator is superior alternative to the existing methods.  相似文献

In this paper, a new sampling method is suggested, namely truncation-based ranked set samples (TBRSS) for estimating the population mean and median. The suggested method is compared with the simple random sampling (SRS), ranked set sampling (RSS), extreme ranked set sampling (ERSS) and median-ranked set sampling (MRSS) methods. It is shown that for estimating the population mean when the underlying distribution is symmetric, TBRSS estimator is unbiased and it is more efficient than the SRS estimator based on the same number of measured units. For asymmetric distributions considered in this study, TBRSS estimator is more efficient than the SRS for all considered distributions except for exponential distribution when the selection coefficient gets large. When compared with ERSS and MRSS methods, TBRSS performs well with respect to ERSS for all considered distributions except for U(0, 1) distribution, while TBRSS efficiency is higher than that of MRSS for U(0, 1) distribution. For estimating the population median, the TBRSS estimators have higher efficiencies when compared with SRS and ERSS. A real data set is used to illustrate the suggested method.  相似文献

In the case where the population distribution is unknown, the Kaplan–Meier estimator of the reliability function based on a ranked set sample with random right-censored data is first proposed. It is shown to be a unique self-consistent estimator. Then, the censored RSS estimator of the population mean is constructed. A simulation study is conducted to compare the performance of the proposed estimators with the corresponding estimators based on a simple random sample. It is shown that the ranked set sampling has higher efficiency. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a renal carcinoma study.  相似文献

As a well-known method for selecting representative samples of populations, ranked set sampling (RSS) has been considered increasingly in recent years. This (RSS) method has proved to be more efficient than the usual simple random sampling (SRS) for estimating most of the population parameters. In order to have a more efficient estimate of the population mean, a new sampling scheme called as robust extreme double ranked set sampling (REDRSS) is introduced and investigated in this paper. A simulation study shows that using REDRSS scheme gives more efficient estimates of population mean with smaller variance than the usual SRS, RSS and most other sampling schemes based on RSS estimators in non-uniform (symmetric or non-symmetric) distributions.  相似文献

Statistical inference based on ranked set sampling has primarily been motivated by nonparametric problems. However, the sampling procedure can provide an improved estimator of the population mean when the population is partially known. In this article, we consider estimation of the population mean and variance for the location-scale families of distributions. We derive and compare different unbiased estimators of these parameters based on rindependent replications of a ranked set sample of size n.Large sample properties, along with asymptotic relative efficiencies, help identify which estimators are best suited for different location-scale distributions.  相似文献

Neoteric ranked set sampling (NRSS) is a recently developed sampling plan, derived from the well-known ranked set sampling (RSS) scheme. It has already been proved that NRSS provides more efficient estimators for population mean and variance compared to RSS and other sampling designs based on ranked sets. In this work, we propose and evaluate the performance of some two-stage sampling designs based on NRSS. Five different sampling schemes are proposed. Through an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study, we verified that all proposed sampling designs outperform RSS, NRSS, and the original double RSS design, producing estimators for the population mean with a lower mean square error. Furthermore, as with NRSS, two-stage NRSS estimators present some bias for asymmetric distributions. We complement the study with a discussion on the relative performance of the proposed estimators. Moreover, an additional simulation based on data of the diameter and height of pine trees is presented.  相似文献

In this paper, proportion estimators and associated variance estimators are proposed for a binary variable with a concomitant variable based on modified ranked set sampling methods, which are extreme ranked set sampling (ERSS), median ranked set sampling (MRSS), percentile ranked set sampling (Per-RSS) and L ranked set sampling (LRSS) methods. The Monte Carlo simulation study is performed to compare the performance of the estimators based on bias, mean squared error, and relative efficiency for different levels of correlation coefficient, set and cycle sizes under normal and log-normal distributions. Moreover, the study is supported with real data application.  相似文献

Ranked set sampling is a sampling technique that provides substantial cost efficiency in experiments where a quick, inexpensive ranking procedure is available to rank the units prior to formal, expensive and precise measurements. Although the theoretical properties and relative efficiencies of this approach with respect to simple random sampling have been extensively studied in the literature for the infinite population setting, the use of ranked set sampling methods has not yet been explored widely for finite populations. The purpose of this study is to use sheep population data from the Research Farm at Ataturk University, Erzurum, Turkey, to demonstrate the practical benefits of ranked set sampling procedures relative to the more commonly used simple random sampling estimation of the population mean and variance in a finite population. It is shown that the ranked set sample mean remains unbiased for the population mean as is the case for the infinite population, but the variance estimators are unbiased only with use of the finite population correction factor. Both mean and variance estimators provide substantial improvement over their simple random sample counterparts.  相似文献

Selected Ranked Set Sampling   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper proposes a sampling procedure called selected ranked set sampling (SRSS), in which only selected observations from a ranked set sample (RSS) are measured. This paper describes the optimal linear estimation of location and scale parameters based on SRSS, and for some distributions it presents the required tables for optimal selections. For these distributions, the optimal SRSS estimators are compared with the other popular simple random sample (SRS) and RSS estimators. In every situation the estimators based on SRSS are found advantageous at least in some respect, compared to those obtained from SRS or RSS. The SRSS method with errors in ranking is also described. The relative precision of the estimator of the population mean is investigated for different degrees of correlations between the actual and erroneous ranking. The paper reports the minimum value of the correlation coefficient between the actual and the erroneous ranking required for achieving better precision with respect to the usual SRS estimator and with respect to the RSS estimator.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we consider the best linear unbiased estimators (BLUEs) based on double ranked set sampling (DRSS) and ordered DRSS (ODRSS) schemes for the simple linear regression model with replicated observations. We assume three symmetric distributions for the random error term, i.e., normal, Laplace and some scale contaminated normal distributions. The proposed BLUEs under DRSS (BLUEs-DRSS) and ODRSS (BLUEs-ODRSS) are compared with the BLUEs based on ordered simple random sampling (OSRS), ranked set sampling (RSS), and ordered RSS (ORSS) schemes. These estimators are compared in terms of relative efficiency (RE), RE of determinant (RED), and RE of trace (RET). It is found that the BLUEs-ODRSS are uniformly better than the BLUEs based on OSRS, RSS, ORSS, and DRSS schemes. We also compare the estimators based on imperfect RSS (IRSS) schemes. It is worth mentioning here that the BLUEs under ordered imperfect DRSS (OIDRSS) are better than their counterparts based on IRSS, ordered IRSS (OIRSS), and imperfect DRSS (IDRSS) methods. Moreover, for sensitivity analysis of the BLUEs, we calculate REs and REDs of the BLUEs under the assumption of normality when in fact the parent distribution follows a non normal symmetric distribution. It turns out that even under violation of normality assumptions, BLUEs of the intercept and the slope parameters are found to be unbiased with equal REs under each sampling scheme. It is also observed that the BLUEs under ODRSS are more efficient than the existing BLUEs.  相似文献

In this paper, an evaluation of the performance of several confidence interval estimators of the population coefficient of variation (τ) using ranked set sampling compared to simple random sampling is performed. Two performance measures are used to assess the confidence intervals for τ, namely: width and coverage probabilities. Simulated data were generated from normal, log-normal, skew normal, Gamma, and Weibull distributions with specified population parameters so that the same values of τ are obtained for each distribution, with sample sizes n=15, 20, 25, 50, 100. A real data example representing birth weight of 189 newborns is used for illustration and performance comparison.  相似文献

A double L ranked set sampling (DLRSS) method is suggested for estimating the population mean. The DLRSS is compared with the simple random sampling (SRS), ranked set sampling (RSS) and L ranked set sampling (LRSS) methods based on the same number of measured units. The conditions for which the suggested estimator performs better than the other estimators are derived. It is found that, the suggested DLRSS estimator is an unbiased of the population mean, and is more efficient than its counterparts using SRS, RSS, and LRSS methods. Real data sets are used for illustration.  相似文献

When quantification of all sampling units is expensive but a set of units can be ranked, without formal measurement, ranked set sampling (RSS) is a cost-efficient alternate to simple random sampling (SRS). In this paper, we study the Kaplan–Meier estimator of survival probability based on RSS under random censoring time setup, and propose nonparametric estimators of the population mean. We present a simulation study to compare the performance of the suggested estimators. It turns out that RSS design can yield a substantial improvement in efficiency over the SRS design. Additionally, we apply the proposed methods to a real data set from an environmental study.  相似文献

The parameters of Downton's bivariate exponential distribution are estimated based on a ranked set sample. Parametric and nonparametric methods are considered. The suggested estimators are compared to the corresponding ones based on simple random sampling. It turns out that some of the suggested estimators are significantly more efficient than the ones based on simple random sampling.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the median ranked set sampling estimation and test of hypothesis for the mean for symmetric distributions. We suggest some alternative estimation strategies for parameters based on shrinkage and pretest principles. It is advantageous to use the non-sample information in the estimation process to construct alternative estimations for the parameter of interest. In this article, large sample properties of the suggested estimators will be assessed numerically using computer simulation. The relative performance of the suggested estimators for moderate and large samples will also be simulated. For illustration purposes, the proposed methodology is applied using data collocated from the Pepsi Cola production company in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

The ranked set sampling (RSS) method as suggested by McIntyre (1952) may be modified to come up with new sampling methods that can be made more efficient than the usual RSS method. Two such modifications, namely extreme and median ranked set sampling methods, are considered in this study. These two methods are generally easier to use in the field and less prone to problems resulting from errors in ranking. Two regression-type estimators based on extreme ranked set sampling (ERSS) and median ranked set sampling (MRSS) for estimating the population mean of the variable of interest are considered in this study and compared with the regression-type estimators based on RSS suggested by Yu & Lam (1997). It turned out that when the variable of interest and the concomitant variable jointly followed a bivariate normal distribution, the regression-type estimator of the population mean based on ERSS dominates all other estimators considered.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of unbiased estimation of the distribution function of an exponential population using order statistics based on a random sample. We present a (unique) unbiased estimator based on a single, say ith, order statistic and study some properties of the estimator for i = 2. We also indicate how this estimator can be utilized to obtain unbiased estimators when a few selected order statistics are available as well as when the sample is selected following an alternative sampling procedure known as ranked set sampling. It is further proved that for a ranked set sample of size two, the proposed estimator is uniformly better than the conventional nonparametric unbiased estimator, further, for a general sample size, a modified ranked set sampling procedure provides an unbiased estimator uniformly better than the conventional nonparametric unbiased estimator based on the usual ranked set sampling procedure.  相似文献
