In this paper, the reliability of a system is discussed when the strength of the system and the stress imposed on it are independent, non-identical exponentiated Pareto distributed random variables. Different point estimations and interval estimations are proposed. The point estimators obtained are maximum likelihood, uniformly minimum variance unbiased and Bayesian estimators. The interval estimations obtained are approximate, exact, bootstrap-p and bootstrap-t confidence intervals and Bayesian credible interval. Different methods and the corresponding confidence intervals are compared using Monte-carlo simulations.  相似文献

The ANOVA-F test is the most popular and commonly used procedure for comparing J independent groups. However, it is well known that this method is very sensitive to non-normality, which has led to the derivation of alternative techniques based on robust estimators. In this work, ANOVA-F-test, trimmed mean Welch test, bootstrap-t trimmed mean Welch test, Schrader and Hettmansperger method with trimmed means, a percentile bootstrap method with trimmed means and a newly proposed method were compared in terms of both the Type I error probability and power. The proposed method compares well with ANOVA-F and other alternatives under various situations.  相似文献

In this paper, a new censoring scheme named by adaptive progressively interval censoring scheme is introduced. The competing risks data come from Marshall–Olkin extended Chen distribution under the new censoring scheme with random removals. We obtain the maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters and the reliability function by using the EM algorithm based on the failure data. In addition, the bootstrap percentile confidence intervals and bootstrap-t confidence intervals of the unknown parameters are obtained. To test the equality of the competing risks model, the likelihood ratio tests are performed. Then, Monte Carlo simulation is conducted to evaluate the performance of the estimators under different sample sizes and removal schemes. Finally, a real data set is analyzed for illustration purpose.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a new goodness-of-fit test for Type I or Type II censored samples from a completely specified distribution. This test is a generalization of Michael's test for censored data, which is based on the empirical distribution and a variance stabilizing transformation. Using Monte Carlo methods, the distributions of the test statistics are analyzed under the null hypothesis. Tables of quantiles of these statistics are also provided. The power of the proposed test is studied and compared to that of other well-known tests also using simulation. The proposed test is more powerful in most of the considered cases. Acceptance regions for the PP, QQ, and Michael's stabilized probability plots are derived, which enable one to visualize which data contribute to the decision of rejecting the null hypothesis. Finally, an application in quality control is presented as illustration.  相似文献

Imputation methods that assign a selection of respondents’ values for missing i tern nonresponses give rise to an addd, tional source of sampling variation, which we term imputation varLance , We examine the effect of imputation variance on the precision of the mean, and propose four procedures for sampling the rEespondents that reduce this additional variance. Two of the procedures employ improved sample designs through selection of respc, ndents by sampling without replacement and by stratified sampl;lng. The other two increase the sample base by the use of multiple imputations.  相似文献

We propose a new goodness-of-fit test for normal and lognormal distributions with unknown parameters and type-II censored data. This test is a generalization of Michael's test for censored samples, which is based on the empirical distribution and a variance stabilizing transformation. We estimate the parameters of the model by using maximum likelihood and Gupta's methods. The quantiles of the distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis are obtained through Monte Carlo simulations. The power of the proposed test is estimated and compared to that of the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test also using simulations. The new test is more powerful than the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test in most of the studied cases. Acceptance regions for the PP, QQ and Michael's stabilized probability plots are derived, making it possible to visualize which data contribute to the decision of rejecting the null hypothesis. Finally, an illustrative example is presented.  相似文献

We consider two problems concerning locating change points in a linear regression model. One involves jump discontinuities (change-point) in a regression model and the other involves regression lines connected at unknown points. We compare four methods for estimating single or multiple change points in a regression model, when both the error variance and regression coefficients change simultaneously at the unknown point(s): Bayesian, Julious, grid search, and the segmented methods. The proposed methods are evaluated via a simulation study and compared via some standard measures of estimation bias and precision. Finally, the methods are illustrated and compared using three real data sets. The simulation and empirical results overall favor both the segmented and Bayesian methods of estimation, which simultaneously estimate the change point and the other model parameters, though only the Bayesian method is able to handle both continuous and dis-continuous change point problems successfully. If it is known that regression lines are continuous then the segmented method ranked first among methods.  相似文献

Resampling methods are a common measure to estimate the variance of a statistic of interest when data consist of nonresponse and imputation is used as compensation. Applying resampling methods usually means that subsamples are drawn from the original sample and that variance estimates are computed based on point estimators of several subsamples. However, newer resampling methods such as the rescaling bootstrap of Chipperfield and Preston [Efficient bootstrap for business surveys. Surv Methodol. 2007;33:167–172] include all elements of the original sample in the computation of its point estimator. Thus, procedures to consider imputation in resampling methods cannot be applied in the ordinary way. For such methods, modifications are necessary. This paper presents an approach applying newer resampling methods for imputed data. The Monte Carlo simulation study conducted in the paper shows that the proposed approach leads to reliable variance estimates in contrast to other modifications.  相似文献

Abstract

When estimating a proportion p by group testing, and it is desired to increase precision, it is sometimes impractical to obtain additional individuals but it is possible to retest groups formed from the individuals within the groups that test positive at the first stage. Hepworth and Watson assessed four methods of retesting, and recommended a random regrouping of individuals from the first stage. They developed an estimator of p for their proposed method, and, because of the analytic complexity, used simulation to examine its variance properties. We now provide an analytical solution to the variance of the estimator, and compare its performance with the earlier simulated results. We show that our solution gives an acceptable approximation in a reasonable range of circumstances.  相似文献

Our goal is to estimate the true number of classes in a population, called the species richness. We consider the case where multiple frequency count tables have been collected from a homogeneous population and investigate a penalized maximum likelihood estimator under a negative binomial model. Because high probabilities of unobserved classes increase the variance of species richness estimates, our method penalizes the probability of a class being unobserved. Tuning the penalization parameter is challenging because the true species richness is never known, and so we propose and validate four novel methods for tuning the penalization parameter. We illustrate and contrast the performance of the proposed methods by estimating the strain-level microbial diversity of Lake Champlain over three consecutive years, and global human host-associated species-level microbial richness.  相似文献

This article investigates three procedures on the multiple comparisons with a control in the presence of unequal error variances. The advantages of the proposed methods are illustrated through two examples. The performance of the proposed methods and other alternative methods is compared by simulation studies. The results show that the typical methods assuming equal variance will have inflated error rate and may lead to erroneous inference when the equal variance assumption fails. In addition, the simulation study shows that the proposed approaches always control the family-wise error rate at a specified nominal level α, while some established methods are liberal and have inflated error rate in some scenarios.  相似文献

Modelling udder infection data using copula models for quadruples   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We study copula models for correlated infection times in the four udder quarters of dairy cows. Both a semi-parametric and a nonparametric approach are considered to estimate the marginal survival functions, taking into account the effect of a binary udder quarter level covariate. We use a two-stage estimation approach and we briefly discuss the asymptotic behaviour of the estimators obtained in the first and the second stage of the estimation. A pseudo-likelihood ratio test is used to select an appropriate copula from the power variance copula family that describes the association between the outcomes in a cluster. We propose a new bootstrap algorithm to obtain the p-value for this test. This bootstrap algorithm also provides estimates for the standard errors of the estimated parameters in the copula. The proposed methods are applied to the udder infection data. A small simulation study for a setting similar to the setting of the udder infection data gives evidence that the proposed method provides a valid approach to select an appropriate copula within the power variance copula family.  相似文献

Conditional variance estimation in heteroscedastic regression models   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
First, we propose a new method for estimating the conditional variance in heteroscedasticity regression models. For heavy tailed innovations, this method is in general more efficient than either of the local linear and local likelihood estimators. Secondly, we apply a variance reduction technique to improve the inference for the conditional variance. The proposed methods are investigated through their asymptotic distributions and numerical performances.  相似文献

The major problem of mean–variance portfolio optimization is parameter uncertainty. Many methods have been proposed to tackle this problem, including shrinkage methods, resampling techniques, and imposing constraints on the portfolio weights, etc. This paper suggests a new estimation method for mean–variance portfolio weights based on the concept of generalized pivotal quantity (GPQ) in the case when asset returns are multivariate normally distributed and serially independent. Both point and interval estimations of the portfolio weights are considered. Comparing with Markowitz's mean–variance model, resampling and shrinkage methods, we find that the proposed GPQ method typically yields the smallest mean-squared error for the point estimate of the portfolio weights and obtains a satisfactory coverage rate for their simultaneous confidence intervals. Finally, we apply the proposed methodology to address a portfolio rebalancing problem.  相似文献

Probabilistic matching of records is widely used to create linked data sets for use in health science, epidemiological, economic, demographic and sociological research. Clearly, this type of matching can lead to linkage errors, which in turn can lead to bias and increased variability when standard statistical estimation techniques are used with the linked data. In this paper we develop unbiased regression parameter estimates to be used when fitting a linear model with nested errors to probabilistically linked data. Since estimation of variance components is typically an important objective when fitting such a model, we also develop appropriate modifications to standard methods of variance components estimation in order to account for linkage error. In particular, we focus on three widely used methods of variance components estimation: analysis of variance, maximum likelihood and restricted maximum likelihood. Simulation results show that our estimators perform reasonably well when compared to standard estimation methods that ignore linkage errors.  相似文献

This paper develops a multiway analysis of variance for non-Gaussian multivariate distributions and provides a practical simulation algorithm to estimate the corresponding components of variance. It specifically addresses variance in Bayesian predictive distributions, showing that it may be decomposed into the sum of extrinsic variance, arising from posterior uncertainty about parameters, and intrinsic variance, which would exist even if parameters were known. Depending on the application at hand, further decomposition of extrinsic or intrinsic variance (or both) may be useful. The paper shows how to produce simulation-consistent estimates of all of these components, and the method demands little additional effort or computing time beyond that already invested in the posterior simulator. It illustrates the methods using a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model of the US economy, both before and during the global financial crisis.  相似文献

Summary.  Microarrays are one of the most widely used high throughput technologies. One of the main problems in the area is that conventional estimates of the variances that are required in the t -statistic and other statistics are unreliable owing to the small number of replications. Various methods have been proposed in the literature to overcome this lack of degrees of freedom problem. In this context, it is commonly observed that the variance increases proportionally with the intensity level, which has led many researchers to assume that the variance is a function of the mean. Here we concentrate on estimation of the variance as a function of an unknown mean in two models: the constant coefficient of variation model and the quadratic variance–mean model. Because the means are unknown and estimated with few degrees of freedom, naive methods that use the sample mean in place of the true mean are generally biased because of the errors-in-variables phenomenon. We propose three methods for overcoming this bias. The first two are variations on the theme of the so-called heteroscedastic simulation–extrapolation estimator, modified to estimate the variance function consistently. The third class of estimators is entirely different, being based on semiparametric information calculations. Simulations show the power of our methods and their lack of bias compared with the naive method that ignores the measurement error. The methodology is illustrated by using microarray data from leukaemia patients.  相似文献

Imputation is often used in surveys to treat item nonresponse. It is well known that treating the imputed values as observed values may lead to substantial underestimation of the variance of the point estimators. To overcome the problem, a number of variance estimation methods have been proposed in the literature, including resampling methods such as the jackknife and the bootstrap. In this paper, we consider the problem of doubly robust inference in the presence of imputed survey data. In the doubly robust literature, point estimation has been the main focus. In this paper, using the reverse framework for variance estimation, we derive doubly robust linearization variance estimators in the case of deterministic and random regression imputation within imputation classes. Also, we study the properties of several jackknife variance estimators under both negligible and nonnegligible sampling fractions. A limited simulation study investigates the performance of various variance estimators in terms of relative bias and relative stability. Finally, the asymptotic normality of imputed estimators is established for stratified multistage designs under both deterministic and random regression imputation. In this article, we propose an outlier detection approach in a multiple regression model using the properties of a difference-based variance estimator. This type of a difference-based variance estimator was originally used to estimate error variance in a non parametric regression model without estimating a non parametric function. This article first employed a difference-based error variance estimator to study the outlier detection problem in a multiple regression model. Our approach uses the leave-one-out type method based on difference-based error variance. The existing outlier detection approaches using the leave-one-out approach are highly affected by other outliers, while ours is not because our approach does not use the regression coefficient estimator. We compared our approach with several existing methods using a simulation study, suggesting the outperformance of our approach. The advantages of our approach are demonstrated using a real data application. Our approach can be extended to the non parametric regression model for outlier detection.  相似文献
