Abstract

Carsten Meiner analyses a series of classic French films, from Truffaut to Haneke, and their uses of the home with respect to the relation between grandeur and individuality. Homes thus become problematizing mediators between individuals and national grandeur, and together the films form a historical series of quite consistent albeit surprising articulations of the metabolism of life in national grandeur. This focus on the home leads to reflections on the problems of the idea of “represented nationalism” in cinema.

The White House Conferences on Aging

White House Conferences on Aging are anachronistic, expensive, and inefficient methods of developing debate and consensus on complex issues. To be effective, they need to derive their force from well-articulated expressed needs delivered by the President. Furthermore, to be effective in today's society, any such effort must combine state-of-the-art telecommunications technology combined with well-known techniques of community organization. Neither of those preconditions exist at the present time. It is suggested that the effort be better conducted by a nongovernmental coalition adequately funded and committed to a limited number of goals and to combined modern telecommunications technology and community organization.     

Psychology, Education and the Ghost of Kaspar Hauser

It is argued that the interventions of psychology have changed their predominant goals and orientation in recent times. Previously, psychology operated practices of differentiation within the school population, preserving the 'normal' through the exclusion of the deviant. Now, the predominant orientation is one of normalisation. The ideology of normalisation is shown to 'fit' with the generalities of the 'new', social-critical developmental psychology; but the predominant model for the implementation of normalisation practices utilises behavioural pedagogies and objectives-based curricula. The question is considered of whether there might be a social-developmental alternative.

The sociology of antiracism in Black and White

This paper reviews sociological research on antiracism and suggests new directions for the field. Current research indicates although White antiracism constitutes attempts to negotiate privilege, it fails to divest from the systems of power that maintain the current balance of privilege in favor of White supremacy. In contrast, the antiracism of people of color provides some insight into attempts to secure liberation, a complete break from White supremacist power structures. I argue DuBois, Black Feminist Thought, and postcolonial sociology inform a sociology of antiracism that centers people of color rather than Whiteness. To illustrate the nuance of antiracism by people of color, I centered my study on Black antiracism. From this perspective, antiracism emerges as the set of practices that Blacks enact in everyday life to mitigate and confront hegemonic racialization. I suggest that one construct of hegemonic whiteness meant to uphold dominant racial ideology that produces emphasized blackness that facilitates symbolic and physical violence toward Blacks. Although emphasized blackness produces and reinforces constraints on Black antiracism, oppositional blackness exemplifies an ultimate form of antiracism in which Black bodies act as agents of social change through liberatory projects such as marronage and counterhegemonic knowledge production. I conclude this article with a case study of the Windward Maroons of Jamaica to illustrate oppositional blackness as the dynamics of resistance and empowerment that emerge to confront hegemonic whiteness.     

The House of Difference,or White Silence

In this article I track three ways of confronting the question of whiteness and its attendant problematic of racism. I look at two personal episodes one involving inheritances from white explorer forebearers and the place of racism in fetishized objects and second in the institutional difficulties within psychoanalysis in finding ways to speak about race and the dilemma of being a beneficiary of racism. Finally I look at the hidden racism in a much lauded psychoanalytic article, Joan Riviere's (1929 Riviere , J. ( 1929 ). Womanliness as a masquerade . International Journal of Psychoanalysis , 9 , 303 – 313 . [Google Scholar]) “Womanliness as a Masquerade,” and in the light of these three problems speculate on “whiteness.” I argue that the intergenerational transmissions of guilt and disavowal together leave a blank psychic space that makes an authentic expression of racial consciousness and genuine reparation currently difficult and certainly, even if well intentioned, partially compromised.

The White Whale: A Case Study

Towards the end of counselling with Steven, a 13‐year‐old Aboriginal adolescent, he dreamed of being lost at sea and then found by a white whale. The whale carried him to safety; specifically, into the care of his current foster family. This ending is full of symbolism and seems to promise positive and uncomplicated outcomes. However, counselling is rarely straightforward, and this case study is no exception. It explores a complex journey though therapy, full of challenges and discomfort, not only for Steven and myself, but also for the variety of other supportive players in his life. The outcome, although nowhere near as dramatic as his dream, I believe reflects meaningful change for this young man.

The Janus‐Face of Whiteness: Toward a Cultural Sociology of White Nationalism and White Antiracism

While the sociological study of white identity has traversed many stages, its most recent turn emphasizes the contextual heterogeneity of whiteness. Because of this increased attention to context and locality, the study of whiteness has never been more amenable to cultural analysis than it is today. Hence, an emphasis on different white racial formations that span a political spectrum from conservative to liberal and racist to antiracist is now dominant. In this vein, white nationalists and white antiracists represent the distinct polarities of contemporary inquisitions into white identity formation. Motivated by this academic milieu, this article first reviews the common perception that whiteness is in ‘crisis’ and polarizing into antagonistic political projects. Second, the article scans the literature on white nationalist and white antiracist groups, making explicit the relation to cultural theory. Third, the article questions why these two groups are consistently juxtaposed against one another and how such a conceptualization hinders, rather than advances, cultural analysis. Fourth and last, the article advanced a cultural sociological framework for understanding white racial identity formation that neither collapses white identities into a monolithic collective nor reifies white formations as a static typology. Such an approach considers the general processes and contexts which produce ‘whiteness’ and give it meaning, as well as illuminates the social relationships and practices in which white racial identity formations become embedded.     

The Contribution of White Collars to Occupational Prestige*

Regression analysis of the 1947 and 1963 NORC occupational prestige scores for 45 occupations indicates that being white-collar may have contributed modestly to the prestige of the 24 nonmanual occupations in 1947, net of economic rewards and educational selectivity, but that any such effect had largely disappeared by 1963. The findings tend to support the view that the white-collar-blue collar distinction has become less important in American society.
