Using Monte Carlo methods, an examination is made of two statistical methods used for hypothesis testing in a general factorial model with a known correlation structure General correlation structures are given in Smith and Lewis (1980) and Pavur and Lewis (1982) which allow the usual F statistic to be corrected by a constant. The corrected F statistic would be the usual F statistic multiplied by a correction constant. A comparison is made between this corrected f statistic and the rank transform F statistic presented by Conover and Iman (1976). When the usual F statistic and the rank transform statistic are corrected for correlationt this simulation study shows that these statistical tests behave well under a variety of situations when not all f the usual assumptions of an ANOVA are satisfied.  相似文献

The muitivariate nonparametric tests analogous to the univar-iate rank sum test and median test are contained in Puri and Sen (1970). These tests provided a practical alternative for the analysis of multivariate data when the assumptions of parametric methods are not satisfied.

In mixed linear models, it is frequently of interest to test hypotheses on the variance components. F-test and likelihood ratio test (LRT) are commonly used for such purposes. Current LRTs available in literature are based on limiting distribution theory. With the development of finite sample distribution theory, it becomes possible to derive the exact test for likelihood ratio statistic. In this paper, we consider the problem of testing null hypotheses on the variance component in a one-way balanced random effects model. We use the exact test for the likelihood ratio statistic and compare the performance of F-test and LRT. Simulations provide strong support of the equivalence between these two tests. Furthermore, we prove the equivalence between these two tests mathematically.  相似文献

In randomized complete block designs, a monotonic relationship among treatment groups may already be established from prior information, e.g., a study with different dose levels of a drug. The test statistic developed by Page and another from Jonckheere and Terpstra are two unweighted rank based tests used to detect ordered alternatives when the assumptions in the traditional two-way analysis of variance are not satisfied. We consider a new weighted rank based test by utilizing a weight for each subject based on the sample variance in computing the new test statistic. The new weighted rank based test is compared with the two commonly used unweighted tests with regard to power under various conditions. The weighted test is generally more powerful than the two unweighted tests when the number of treatment groups is small to moderate.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of testing the randomness of Gaussian and non–Gaussian time series. A general class of parametric portmanteau statistics, which include the Box–Pierce and the Ljung–Box statistics, is introduced. Using the exact first and second moments of the sample autocorrelations when the observations are i.i.d. normal with unknown mean, the exact expected value of any portmanteau statistics is obtained for this case. Two new portmanteau statistics, which exploit the exact moments of the sample autocorrelations, are studied. For the nonparametric case, a rank portmanteau statistic is introduced. The latter has the same distribution for any series of exchangeable random variables and uses the exact moments of the rank autocorrelations. We show that its asymptotic distribution is chi–squate. Simulation results indicate that the new portmanteau statistics are better approximated by the chi–square asymptotic distribution than the Ljung–Box statistics. Several analytical results presented in the paper were derived by usig a symbolic manipulation program.  相似文献

In a k-way analysis of variance model, the major concern is testing for main effects and for the presence of interaction between the factors. When the assumptions of normality and equal variances are satisfied, the appropriate test to use is the usual F-test for ANOVA. However, when the normality assumption is not satisfied then a robust or nonparametric test is needed to conduct the analysis. In this paper a nonparametric method based on cell counts is proposed. Each cell is divided into L subcells based on predetermined outpoints and the resulting frequencies are laid out in a contingency table. Then the Pearson x2 and tne likelihood ratio tests are performed. A comparison with the classical ANOVA F-test indicates that the proposed method is preferable when the data comes from a thick-tailed highly skewed distribution.  相似文献

Real world data often fail to meet the underlying assumption of population normality. The Rank Transformation (RT) procedure has been recommended as an alternative to the parametric factorial analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The purpose of this study was to compare the Type I error and power properties of the RT ANCOVA to the parametric procedure in the context of a completely randomized balanced 3 × 4 factorial layout with one covariate. This study was concerned with tests of homogeneity of regression coefficients and interaction under conditional (non)normality. Both procedures displayed erratic Type I error rates for the test of homogeneity of regression coefficients under conditional nonnormality. With all parametric assumptions valid, the simulation results demonstrated that the RT ANCOVA failed as a test for either homogeneity of regression coefficients or interaction due to severe Type I error inflation. The error inflation was most severe when departures from conditional normality were extreme. Also associated with the RT procedure was a loss of power. It is recommended that the RT procedure not be used as an alternative to factorial ANCOVA despite its encouragement from SAS, IMSL, and other respected sources.  相似文献

The two-way two-levels crossed factorial design is a commonly used design by practitioners at the exploratory phase of industrial experiments. The F-test in the usual linear model for analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a key instrument to assess the impact of each factor and of their interactions on the response variable. However, if assumptions such as normal distribution and homoscedasticity of errors are violated, the conventional wisdom is to resort to nonparametric tests. Nonparametric methods, rank-based as well as permutation, have been a subject of recent investigations to make them effective in testing the hypotheses of interest and to improve their performance in small sample situations. In this study, we assess the performances of some nonparametric methods and, more importantly, we compare their powers. Specifically, we examine three permutation methods (Constrained Synchronized Permutations, Unconstrained Synchronized Permutations and Wald-Type Permutation Test), a rank-based method (Aligned Rank Transform) and a parametric method (ANOVA-Type Test). In the simulations, we generate datasets with different configurations of distribution of errors, variance, factor's effect and number of replicates. The objective is to elicit practical advice and guides to practitioners regarding the sensitivity of the tests in the various configurations, the conditions under which some tests cannot be used, the tradeoff between power and type I error, and the bias of the power on one main factor analysis due to the presence of effect of the other factor. A dataset from an industrial engineering experiment for thermoformed packaging production is used to illustrate the application of the various methods of analysis, taking into account the power of the test suggested by the objective of the experiment.  相似文献

We derive an exact F-test for random effects in the nested-error regression model. The derivation utilizes a matrix decomposition that offers a transformation of the response vector into two independent subvectors. When the random effects are absent, the test statistic reduces to a ratio of two independent residual sums of squares that are computed by fitting a regression model using each subvector. A small simulation study compares the power of the F-test with various recent tests and shows that the proposed test has a competitive performance under small as well as large number of clusters.  相似文献

This paper derives a simple ANOVA-F-statistic which tests for random individual effects in a one-way error component model, using recursive residuals. Power comparisons are performed for this F-test when it is computed using true disturbances and recursive residuals from a panel data regression. Under the null, both statistics have an exact F distribution. The standardized version of the Breusch and Pagan (1980) Lagrange Multiplier test (SLM) as well as a fixed effects F-statistic (FE) recommended by Moulton and Randolph (1989), are also included in this comparison. The exact power function can be computed in all cases using Imhof's (1961) procedure. Our results suggest that the F-test based on recursive residuals is inferior to the popular SLM and FE tests based on computational simplicity, power comparisons and its sensitivity to the K observations starting the recursion.  相似文献

A two–sample test statistic for detecting shifts in location is developed for a broad range of underlying distributions using adaptive techniques. The test statistic is a linear rank statistics which uses a simple modification of the Wilcoxon test; the scores are Winsorized ranks where the upper and lower Winsorinzing proportions are estimated in the first stage of the adaptive procedure using sample the first stage of the adaptive procedure using sample measures of the distribution's skewness and tailweight. An empirical relationship between the Winsorizing proportions and the sample skewness and tailweight allows for a ‘continuous’ adaptation of the test statistic to the data. The test has good asymptotic properties, and the small sample results are compared with other populatr parametric, nonparametric, and two–stage tests using Monte Carlo methods. Based on these results, this proposed test procedure is recommended for moderate and larger sample sizes.  相似文献

A computer algorithm for computing the alternative distributions of the Wilcoxon signed rank statistic under shift alternatives is discussed. An explicit error bound is derived for the numeric integration approximation to these distributions.

A nonparametric process control procedure in which the standard CUSUM procedure is applied to the Wilcoxon signed rank statistic is discussed. In order to implement this procedure, the distribution of the Wilcoxon statistic under shift of the underlying distribution from its point of symmetry needs to be computed. The average run length of the nonparametric and parametric CUSUM are compared.  相似文献

In experiments, the classical (ANOVA) F-test is often used to test the omnibus null-hypothesis μ1 = μ2 ... = μ j = ... = μ n (all n population means are equal) in a one-way ANOVA design, even when one or more basic assumptions are being violated. In the first part of this article, we will briefly discuss the consequences of the different types of violations of the basic assumptions (dependent measurements, non-normality, heteroscedasticity) on the validity of the F-test. Secondly, we will present a simulation experiment, designed to compare the type I-error and power properties of both the F-test and some of its parametric adaptations: the Brown & Forsythe F*-test and Welch’s Vw-test. It is concluded that the Welch Vw-test offers acceptable control over the type I-error rate in combination with (very) high power in most of the experimental conditions. Therefore, its use is highly recommended when one or more basic assumptions are being violated. In general, the use of the Brown & Forsythe F*-test cannot be recommended on power considerations unless the design is balanced and the homoscedasticity assumption holds.  相似文献

We develop a finite-sample procedure to test the mean-variance efficiency and spanning hypotheses, without imposing any parametric assumptions on the distribution of model disturbances. In so doing, we provide an exact distribution-free method to test uniform linear restrictions in multivariate linear regression models. The framework allows for unknown forms of nonnormalities as well as time-varying conditional variances and covariances among the model disturbances. We derive exact bounds on the null distribution of joint F statistics to deal with the presence of nuisance parameters, and we show how to implement the resulting generalized nonparametric bounds tests with Monte Carlo resampling techniques. In sharp contrast to the usual tests that are not even computable when the number of test assets is too large, the power of the proposed test procedure potentially increases along both the time and cross-sectional dimensions.  相似文献

For two-way layouts in a between subjects ANOVA design the aligned rank transform (ART) is compared with the parametric F-test as well as six other nonparametric methods: rank transform (RT), inverse normal transform (INT), a combination of ART and INT, Puri & Sen's L statistic, van der Waerden and Akritas & Brunners ATS. The type I error rates are computed for the uniform and the exponential distributions, both as continuous and in several variations as discrete distribution. The computations had been performed for balanced and unbalanced designs as well as for several effect models. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of discrete distributions on the error rate. And it is shown that this scaling impact is restricted to the ART- as well as the combination of ART- and INT-method. There are two effects: first with increasing cell counts their error rates rise beyond any acceptable limit up to 20 percent and more. And secondly their rates rise when the number of distinct values of the dependent variable decreases. This behavior is more severe for underlying exponential distributions than for uniform distributions. Therefore there is a recommendation not to apply the ART if the mean cell frequencies exceed 10.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the three-factor unbalanced nested design model without the assumption of equal error variance. For the problem of testing “main effects” of the three factors, we propose a parametric bootstrap (PB) approach and compare it with the existing generalized F (GF) test. The Type I error rates of the tests are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. Our studies show that the PB test performs better than the generalized F-test. The PB test performs very satisfactorily even for small samples while the GF test exhibits poor Type I error properties when the number of factorial combinations or treatments goes up. It is also noted that the same tests can be used to test the significance of the random effect variance component in a three-factor mixed effects nested model under unequal error variances.  相似文献

Linear rank tests are used extensively for comparing two or more groups of continuous outcomes. Tests in this class retain proper test size with minimal assumptions and can have high efficiency towards an alternative of interest. In recent years, these tests have been increasingly used in settings where an individual's observation is itself a scalar summary of several outcome measures. Here, simple distributional structures on the outcome variables can lead to complex differences between the distributions of summary statistics of the comparison groups. The local asymptotic power of linear rank tests when the groups are assumed to differ by a location or scale alternative has been studied in detail. However, not much is known about their behavior for other types of alternatives. To address this, we derive the asymptotic distribution of linear rank tests under a general contiguous alternative and then investigate the implications for location–scale families and more general settings, including an example drawn from an AIDS clinical trial where the continuous outcome is a summary statistic computed from repeated measures of a biological marker.  相似文献

When testing the equality of the means from two independent normally distributed populations given that the variances of the two populations are unknown but assumed equal, the classical two-sample t-test is recommended. If the underlying population distributions are normal with unequal and unknown variances, either Welch's t-statistic or Satterthwaite's Approximate F-test is suggested. However, Welch's procedure is non-robust under most non-normal distributions. There is a variable tolerance level around the strict assumptions of data independence, homogeneity of variances and normality of the distributions. Few textbooks offer alternatives when one or more of the underlying assumptions are not defensible.  相似文献

We propose goodness-of-fit tests for testing generalized linear models and semiparametric regression models against smooth alternatives. The focus is on models having both continous and factorial covariates. As a smooth extension of a parametric or semiparametric model we use generalized varying-coefficient models as proposed by Hastie and Tibshirani. A likelihood ratio statistic is used for testing. Asymptotic expansions allow us to write the estimates as linear smoothers which in turn guarantees simple and fast bootstrapping of the test statistic. The test is shown to have √ n -power, but in contrast with parametric tests it is powerful against smooth alternatives in general.  相似文献
