In stratified sampling, methods for the allocation of effort among strata usually rely on some measure of within-stratum variance. If we do not have enough information about these variances, adaptive allocation can be used. In adaptive allocation designs, surveys are conducted in two phases. Information from the first phase is used to allocate the remaining units among the strata in the second phase. Brown et al. [Adaptive two-stage sequential sampling, Popul. Ecol. 50 (2008), pp. 239–245] introduced an adaptive allocation sampling design – where the final sample size was random – and an unbiased estimator. Here, we derive an unbiased variance estimator for the design, and consider a related design where the final sample size is fixed. Having a fixed final sample size can make survey-planning easier. We introduce a biased Horvitz–Thompson type estimator and a biased sample mean type estimator for the sampling designs. We conduct two simulation studies on honey producers in Kurdistan and synthetic zirconium distribution in a region on the moon. Results show that the introduced estimators are more efficient than the available estimators for both variable and fixed sample size designs, and the conventional unbiased estimator of stratified simple random sampling design. In order to evaluate efficiencies of the introduced designs and their estimator furthermore, we first review some well-known adaptive allocation designs and compare their estimator with the introduced estimators. Simulation results show that the introduced estimators are more efficient than available estimators of these well-known adaptive allocation designs.  相似文献

In this article we study a semiparametric additive risks model (McKeague and Sasieni (1994)) for two-stage design survival data where accurate information is available only on second stage subjects, a subset of the first stage study. We derive two-stage estimators by combining data from both stages. Large sample inferences are developed. As a by-product, we also obtain asymptotic properties of the single stage estimators of McKeague and Sasieni (1994) when the semiparametric additive risks model is misspecified. The proposed two-stage estimators are shown to be asymptotically more efficient than the second stage estimators. They also demonstrate smaller bias and variance for finite samples. The developed methods are illustrated using small intestine cancer data from the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) Program.  相似文献

We consider a variance estimation when a stratified single stage cluster sample is selected in the first phase and a stratified simple random element sample is selected in the second phase. We propose explicit formulas of (asymptotically), we propose explicit formulas of (asymptotically) unbiased variance estimators for the double expansion estimator and regression estimator. We perform a small simulation study to investigate the performance of the proposed variance estimators. In our simulation study, the proposed variance estimator showed better or comparable performance to the Jackknife variance estimator. We also extend the results to a two-phase sampling design in which a stratified pps with replacement cluster sample is selected in the first phase.  相似文献

In this article, we consider nonparametric estimation of the survival function when the data are subject to left-truncation and right-censoring and the sample size before truncation is known. We propose two estimators. The first estimator is derived based on a self-consistent estimating equation. The second estimator is obtained by using the constrained expectation-maximization algorithm. Simulation results indicate that both estimators are more efficient than the product-limit estimator. When there is no censoring, the performance of the proposed estimators is compared with that of the estimator proposed by Li and Qin [Semiparametric likelihood-based inference for biased and truncated data when total sample size is known, J. R. Stat. Soc. B 60 (1998), pp. 243–254] via simulation study.  相似文献

Motivated by a real-life problem, we develop a Two-Stage Cluster Sampling with Ranked Set Sampling (TSCRSS) design in the second stage for which we derive an unbiased estimator of population mean and its variance. An unbiased estimator of the variance of mean estimator is also derived. It is proved that the TSCRSS is more efficient—in the sense of having smaller variance—than the conventional two-stage cluster simple random sampling in which the second-stage sampling is with replacement. Using a simulation study on a real-life population, we show that the TSCRSS is more efficient than the conventional two-stage cluster sampling when simple random sampling without replacement is used in both stages.  相似文献

Abstract

In the present article, an effort has been made to develop calibration estimators of the population mean under two-stage stratified random sampling design when auxiliary information is available at primary stage unit (psu) level. The properties of the developed estimators are derived in-terms of design based approximate variance and approximate consistent design based estimator of the variance. Some simulation studies have been conducted to investigate the relative performance of calibration estimator over the usual estimator of the population mean without using auxiliary information in two-stage stratified random sampling. Proposed calibration estimators have outperformed the usual estimator without using auxiliary information.  相似文献

This paper discusses the large sample theory of the two-stage Welsh's trimmed mean for the limited information simultaneous equations model. Besides having asymptotic normality, this trimmed mean, as the two-stage least squares estimator, is a generalized least squares estimator. It also acts as a robust Aitken estimator for the simultaneous equations model. Examples illustrate real data analysis and large sample inferences based on this trimmed mean.  相似文献

In RSS, the variance of observations in each ranked set plays an important role in finding an optimal design for unbalanced RSS and in inferring the population mean. The empirical estimator (i.e., the sample variance in a given ranked set) is most commonly used for estimating the variance in the literature. However, the empirical estimator does not use the information in the entire data over different ranked sets. Further, it is highly variable when the sample size is not large enough, as is typical in RSS applications. In this paper, we propose a plug-in estimator for the variance of each set, which is more efficient than the empirical one. The estimator uses a result in order statistics which characterizes the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the rth order statistics as a function of the population CDF. We analytically prove the asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator. We further apply it to estimate the standard error of the RSS mean estimator. Both our simulation and empirical study show that our estimators consistently outperform existing methods.  相似文献

This paper considers a non parametric longitudinal model, where the within-subject correlation structure is represented by a time-depending autoregressive error process. An initial estimator without taking into account the within-subject correlation is obtained to fit the time-depending autoregressive error process. With the initial estimator, we construct a two-stage local linear estimator of the mean function. According to the asymptotic normality of the initial and two-stage estimators, it is discovered that the two-stage estimator has a smaller asymptotic variance. The simulation results show us that the two-stage estimation has some good properties. The analysis of a data set demonstrates its application.  相似文献

In the presence of covariates information, assuming the linear relationship between a transformation of survival time and covariates, we propose a new estimator of survival function and show its consistency. In addition, a comparison of the proposed estimator with the product-limit estimator introduced by Kaplan and Meier (1958) is performed through Monte Carlo simulation studies. We illustrate the proposed estimator with the updated Stanford heart transplant data.  相似文献

When the time to death, X, and the time to censoring, Y, are associated some additional information is need to identify the marginal survival functions. A natural function which provides this additional information is the copula of X and Y. Assuming that the copula is known, we use the notion of self consistency to construct an estimator of the marginal survival functions based on dependent competing risk data. Results of a small simulation study are shown to compare this estimator to other estimators of the marginal survival function based on an assumed copula.  相似文献

We suggest five types of two-stage James-Stein type estimators of the mean vector μ based on prior knowledge about μ and two-stage sampling scheme proposed by Waikar and Katti(1971) Their risks are evaluated and calculated to compare with two-stage estimator suggested by Waikar and Katti(1971) when the prior form of an initial estimate of μ is 0. We find that the five estimators suggested here all have high efficiencies in large dimensions and/or in large value of ratio of two sample sizes at each stage.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In incident cohort studies, survival data often include subjects who have had an initiate event at recruitment and may potentially experience two successive events (first and second) during the follow-up period. When disease registries or surveillance systems collect data based on incidence occurring within a specific calendar time interval, the initial event is usually subject to double truncation. Furthermore, since the second duration process is observable only if the first event has occurred, double truncation and dependent censoring arise. In this article, under the two sampling biases with an unspecified distribution of truncation variables, we propose a nonparametric estimator of the joint survival function of two successive duration times using the inverse-probability-weighted (IPW) approach. The consistency of the proposed estimator is established. Based on the estimated marginal survival functions, we also propose a two-stage estimation procedure for estimating the parameters of copula model. The bootstrap method is used to construct confidence interval. Numerical studies demonstrate that the proposed estimation approaches perform well with moderate sample sizes.  相似文献

In this study, we consider the application of the James–Stein estimator for population means from a class of arbitrary populations based on ranked set sample (RSS). We consider a basis for optimally combining sample information from several data sources. We succinctly develop the asymptotic theory of simultaneous estimation of several means for differing replications based on the well-defined shrinkage principle. We showcase that a shrinkage-type estimator will have, under quadratic loss, a substantial risk reduction relative to the classical estimator based on simple random sample and RSS. Asymptotic distributional quadratic biases and risks of the shrinkage estimators are derived and compared with those of the classical estimator. A simulation study is used to support the asymptotic result. An over-riding theme of this study is that the shrinkage estimation method provides a powerful extension of its traditional counterpart for non-normal populations. Finally, we will use a real data set to illustrate the computation of the proposed estimators.  相似文献

The randomized response technique (RRT) is an important tool, commonly used to avoid biased answers in survey on sensitive issues by preserving the respondents’ privacy. In this paper, we introduce a data collection method for survey on sensitive issues combining both the unrelated-question RRT and the direct question design. The direct questioning method is utilized to obtain responses to a non sensitive question that is related to the innocuous question from the unrelated-question RRT. These responses serve as additional information that can be used to improve the estimation of the prevalence of the sensitive behavior. Furthermore, we propose two new methods for the estimation of the proportion of respondents possessing the sensitive attribute under a missing data setup. More specifically, we develop the weighted estimator and the weighted conditional likelihood estimator. The performances of our estimators are studied numerically and compared with that of an existing one. Both proposed estimators are more efficient than the Greenberg's estimator. We illustrate our methods using real data from a survey study on illegal use of cable TV service in Taiwan.  相似文献

A new nonparametric estimator is proposed for the copula function of a bivariate survival function for data subject to random right-censoring. We consider two censoring models: univariate and copula censoring. We show strong consistency and we obtain an i.i.d. representation for the copula estimator. In a simulation study we compare the new estimator to the one of Gribkova and Lopez [Nonparametric copula estimation under bivariate censoring; doi:10.1111/sjos.12144].  相似文献

This article presents the calibration procedure of the two-phase randomized response (RR) technique for surveying the sensitive characteristic. When the sampling scheme is two-phase or double sampling, auxiliary information known from the entire population can be used, but the auxiliary information should be information available from both the first and second phases of the sample. If there is auxiliary information available from both the first and second phases, then we can improve the ordinary two-phase RR estimator by incorporating this information in the estimation procedure. In this article, we used the new two-step Newton's method for computing unknown constants in the calibration procedure and compared the efficiency of the proposed estimator through some numerical study.  相似文献

It is well-known that the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) may severely under-estimate the survival function with left truncated data. Based on the Nelson estimator (for right censored data) and self-consistency we suggest a nonparametric estimator of the survival function, the iterative Nelson estimator (INE), for arbitrarily truncated and censored data, where only few nonparametric estimators are available. By simulation we show that the INE does well in overcoming the under-estimation of the survival function from the NPMLE for left-truncated and interval-censored data. An interesting application of the INE is as a diagnostic tool for other estimators, such as the monotone MLE or parametric MLEs. The methodology is illustrated by application to two real world problems: the Channing House and the Massachusetts Health Care Panel Study data sets.  相似文献

This article considers the estimation and testing of a within-group two-stage least squares (TSLS) estimator for instruments with varying degrees of weakness in a longitudinal (panel) data model. We show that adding the repeated cross-sectional information into a regression model can improve the estimation in weak instruments. Moreover, the consistency and limiting distribution of the TSLS estimator are established when both N and T tend to infinity. Some asymptotically pivotal tests are extended to a longitudinal data model and their asymptotic properties are examined. A Monte Carlo experiment is conducted to evaluate the finite sample performance of the proposed estimators.  相似文献

The estimation of the reliability function of the Weibull lifetime model is considered in the presence of uncertain prior information (not in the form of prior distribution) on the parameter of interest. This information is assumed to be available in some sort of a realistic conjecture. In this article, we focus on how to combine sample and non-sample information together in order to achieve improved estimation performance. Three classes of point estimatiors, namely, the unrestricted estimator, the shrinkage estimator and shrinkage preliminary test estimator (SPTE) are proposed. Their asymptotic biases and mean-squared errors are derived and compared. The relative dominance picture of the estimators is presented. Interestingly, the proposed SPTE dominates the unrestricted estimator in a range that is wider than that of the usual preliminary test estimator. A small-scale simulation experiment is used to examine the small sample properties of the proposed estimators. Our simulation investigations have provided strong evidence that corroborates with asymptotic theory. The suggested estimation methods are applied to a published data set to illustrate the performance of the estimators in a real-life situation.  相似文献
