Lorenz ranking of income distributions   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Based on the stochastic comparison of the Lorenz curves of income distributions, five partial orderings of income distributions are obtained. Three of these orderings are the well known star shaped, stochastic and the Lorenz orderings. The other two are new and are studied in some detail. The weakest ordering which is called the Lorenz area ordering is of special importance since it enables us to compare interesting Lorenz curves. This latter ordering leads to a class of income inequality measures which are identical with the linear inequality measures considered by Mehran (1976). A discussion of these measures is presented together with an application to part of Kunzet's (1963) data.  相似文献

Recently Li and Shaked [2007. A general family of univariate stochastic orders. J. Statist. Plann. Inference 137, 3601–3610] introduced the generalized total time on test (GTTT) transform with respect to a given function ??. In this paper we study some properties of it which are related with stochastic orderings. A concept of Lehmann and Rojo [1992. Invariant directional orderings. Ann. Statist. 20, 2100–2110] is applied to a new setting and the GTTT transform is used to define invariance properties and distances of some stochastic orders. Iterations of the GTTT transforms are also studied and their relations with exponential mixtures of gamma distributions are established.  相似文献

We propose a new type of stochastic ordering which imposes a monotone tendency in differences between one multinomial probability and a known standard one. An estimation procedure is proposed for the constrained maximum likelihood estimate, and then the asymptotic null distribution is derived for the likelihood ratio test statistic for testing equality of two multinomial distributions against the new stochastic ordering. An alternative test is also discussed based on Neyman modified minimum chi-square estimator. These tests are illustrated with a set of heart disease data.  相似文献

Structural equation modeling (SEM) typically utilizes first- and second-order moment structures. This limits its applicability since many unidentified models and many equivalent models that researchers would like to distinguish are created. In this paper, we relax this restriction and assume non-normal distributions on exogenous variables. We shall provide a solution to the problems of underidentifiability and equivalence of SEM models by making use of non-normality (higher-order moment structures). The non-normal SEM is applied to finding the possible direction of a path in simple regression models. The method of (generalized) least squares is employed to estimate model parameters. A test statistic for examining a fit of a model is proposed. A simulation result and a real data example are reported to study how the non-normal SEM approach works empirically.  相似文献

Convolutions of independent random variables are usually compared. In this paper, after a synthetic comparison with respect to hazard rate ordering between sums of independent exponential random variables, we focus on the special case where one sum is identically distributed. So, for a given sum of n independent exponential random variables, we deduce the "best" Erlang-n bounds, with respect to each of the usual orderings: mean ordering, stochastic ordering, hazard rate ordering and likelihood ratio ordering.  相似文献

The problem of comparing some known distributions in various types of stochastic orderings has been of interest to many authors. In particular, several authors have been recently concerned with the comparison of Poisson, binomial, and negative binomial distributions with their respective mixtures. Incidentally, these distributions are among the four well-known distributions of the family of generalized power series distributions (GPSD's). The remaining distribution is the logarithmic series distribution. In this paper, we shall be concerned with comparing this remaining distribution of the class GPSD with its mixture in terms of various types of stochastic orderings such as the simple stochastic, likelihood ratio, uniformly more variable, convex, hazard rate and expectation orderings. Derivation of the results in this case prove to be computationally trickier than the other three. The special case when the means of the two distributions are the same is also discussed. Finally, an illustrative explicit example is provided.  相似文献

Stochastic ordering is a useful concept in order restricted inferences. In this paper, we propose a new estimation technique for the parameters in two multinomial populations under stochastic orderings when missing data are present. In comparison with traditional maximum likelihood estimation method, our new method can guarantee the uniqueness of the maximum of the likelihood function. Furthermore, it does not depend on the choice of initial values for the parameters in contrast to the EM algorithm. Finally, we give the asymptotic distributions of the likelihood ratio statistics based on the new estimation method.  相似文献

A new univariate stochastic ordering is introduced. Some characterization results for such an ordering are stated. It is proved that the ordering is an integral stochastic ordering, obtaining a maximal generator. By means of this generator, the main properties of the ordering are deduced. A method for introducing univariate stochastic orderings, suggested by the new ordering, is analysed. Relationships with other stochastic orderings are also developed. To conclude, an example of an application of the new ordering to the field of medicine is proposed.  相似文献

Uniform stochastic orderings of random variables are expressed as total positivity (TP) of density, survival, and distribution functions. The orderings are called uniform because each is a stochastic order that persists under conditioning to a family of intervals—for example, the family consisting of all intervals of the form (-∞,x]. This paper is concerned with the preservation of uniform stochastic ordering under convolution, mixing, and the formation of coherent systems. A general TP2 result involving preservation of total positivity under integration is presented and applied to convolutions and mixtures of distribution and survival functions. Log-concavity of distribution, survival, and density functions characterizes distributions that preserve the various orderings under convolution. Likewise, distributions that preserve orderings under mixing are characterized by TP2 distribution and survival functions.  相似文献

Residual probability order is a partial ordering analog of the total order stochastic precedence which can be fruitfully applied in many reliability problems. We introduce a U-statistic test for the null hypothesis that two random variables are equally distributed versus the alternative that one strictly dominates the other in residual probability order. The critical value is obtained by normal approximation and bootstrap procedures. The performance of the test statistic is evaluated using a simulation study. Finally, a numerical example illustrating the theory is also given.  相似文献

In this paper, we obtain some general results on characterizations of probability distributions from relationships between conditional moment, failure rate, and log-odds rate functions. We also study stochastic orders and classes based on the log-odds rate function and some relationships with usual stochastic orderings and classes. Some characterizations and ordering properties are obtained by using weighted distributions.  相似文献

For a segmented regression system with an unknown changepoint over two domains of a predictor, a new empirical likelihood ratio statistic is proposed to test the null hypothesis of no change. Under the null hypothesis of no change, the proposed test statistic is shown empirically to be Gumbel distributed with robust location and scale estimators against various parameter settings and error distributions. A power analysis is conducted to illustrate the performance of the test. Under the alternative hypothesis with a changepoint, the test statistic is utilized to estimate the changepoint between the two domains. A comparison of the frequency distributions between the proposed estimator and two parametric methods indicates that the proposed method is effective in capturing the true changepoint.  相似文献

The Pearson chi‐squared statistic for testing the equality of two multinomial populations when the categories are nominal is much less appropriate for ordinal categories. Test statistics typically used in this context are based on scorings of the ordinal levels, but the results of these tests are highly dependent on the choice of scores. The authors propose a test which naturally modifies the Pearson chi‐squared statistic to incorporate the ordinal information. The proposed test statistic does not depend on the scores and under the null hypothesis of equality of populations, it is asymptotically equivalent to the likelihood ratio test against the alternative of two‐sided likelihood ratio ordering.  相似文献

Many test statistics for classical simple goodness-of-fit hypothesis testing problems are distancemeasures between the distribution function of the null hypothesis distributipn and the empirical distribution function sometimes called EDF tests. If a composite parametric null hypothesis is considered in place of the simple null hypothesis, then a test statistic can be obtained from each EDF test by replacing the known distribution function of the simple problem by the Rao-Blackwell estimating distribution function. In this note we use known results to show that these Rao-Blackwell-EDF test statistics have distributions that do not depend upon parameter values, and hence that these tests are independent of a complete sufficient statistic for the parameters.  相似文献

We consider the comparison of mean vectors for k groups when k is large and sample size per group is fixed. The asymptotic null and non-null distributions of the normal theory likelihood ratio, Lawley–Hotelling and Bartlett–Nanda–Pillai statistics are derived under general conditions. We extend the results to tests on the profiles of the mean vectors, tests for additional information (provided by a sub-vector of the responses over and beyond the remaining sub-vector of responses in separating the groups) and tests on the dimension of the hyperplane formed by the mean vectors. Our techniques are based on perturbation expansions and limit theorems applied to independent but non-identically distributed sequences of quadratic forms in random matrices. In all these four MANOVA problems, the asymptotic null and non-null distributions are normal. Both the null and non-null distributions are asymptotically invariant to non-normality when the group sample sizes are equal. In the unbalanced case, a slight modification of the test statistics will lead to asymptotically robust tests. Based on the robustness results, some approaches for finite approximation are introduced. The numerical results provide strong support for the asymptotic results and finiteness approximations.  相似文献

Abstract

In a 2-step monotone missing dataset drawn from a multivariate normal population, T2-type test statistic (similar to Hotelling’s T2 test statistic) and likelihood ratio (LR) are often used for the test for a mean vector. In complete data, Hotelling’s T2 test and LR test are equivalent, however T2-type test and LR test are not equivalent in the 2-step monotone missing dataset. Then we interest which statistic is reasonable with relation to power. In this paper, we derive asymptotic power function of both statistics under a local alternative and obtain an explicit form for difference in asymptotic power function. Furthermore, under several parameter settings, we compare LR and T2-type test numerically by using difference in empirical power and in asymptotic power function. Summarizing obtained results, we recommend applying LR test for testing a mean vector.  相似文献

A modified chi-square test for testing the equality of two multinomial populations against an order restricted alternative in one sample and two sample cases is constructed. The relation between the concepts of dependence by cM-square and stochastic ordering is established, The asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is the chi-bar-square type discussed by Robertson, Wright and Dykstra (1988). Simulations are used to compare the power of this test with the power of the likelihood ratio test of stochastic ordering of the two multinomial populations.  相似文献

Trend tests in dose-response have been central problems in medicine. The likelihood ratio test is often used to test hypotheses involving a stochastic order. Stratified contingency tables are common in practice. The distribution theory of likelihood ratio test has not been full developed for stratified tables and more than two stochastically ordered distributions. Under c strata of m × r tables, for testing the conditional independence against simple stochastic order alternative, this article introduces a model-free test method and gives the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic, which is a chi-bar-squared distribution. A real data set concerning an ordered stratified table will be used to show the validity of this test method.  相似文献

In this paper tests of hypothesis are constructed for the family of skew normal distributions. The proposed tests utilize the fact that the moment generating function of the skew normal variable satisfies a simple differential equation. The empirical counterpart of this equation, involving the empirical moment generating function, yields simple consistent test statistics. Finite-sample results as well as results from real data are provided for the proposed procedures.  相似文献

The phenotype of a quantitative trait locus (QTL) is often modeled by a finite mixture of normal distributions. If the QTL effect depends on the number of copies of a specific allele one carries, then the mixture model has three components. In this case, the mixing proportions have a binomial structure according to the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. In the search for QTL, a significance test of homogeneity against the Hardy–Weinberg normal mixture model alternative is an important first step. The LOD score method, a likelihood ratio test used in genetics, is a favored choice. However, there is not yet a general theory for the limiting distribution of the likelihood ratio statistic in the presence of unknown variance. This paper derives the limiting distribution of the likelihood ratio statistic, which can be described by the supremum of a quadratic form of a Gaussian process. Further, the result implies that the distribution of the modified likelihood ratio statistic is well approximated by a chi-squared distribution. Simulation results show that the approximation has satisfactory precision for the cases considered. We also give a real-data example.  相似文献
